2 Rev. Craig Goodrich, Senior Pastor Summer is on the way again! Many of you have returned to your northern homes. We miss you and hope you are continuing to worship with us online. As we look back on the month of May, the highlights include our recognition of “milestones” or graduations on Sunday, May 15. The photo on the cover of this Outreach captures those moments. That same morning we also celebrated with Dr. Brice Gerlach as we sent him off on his muchdeserved sabbatical. The following Sunday was “Staff Recognition” Sunday in which we recognized your dedicated staff, particularly those who have served 5, 10, 15 or 20 years including Ashley Hancock, Christian Education Assistant (5 years) and Kathleen Law, Communications Coordinator (20 years) and the following preschool teachers and aides: Sara Lezgus, Jean Oppegaard (5 years), Claudia Clarke, Marylee Finman, Isabella Sala-Junkroski (10 years), Colleen Kennedy (15 years). We have welcomed Bob Henstein as our interim summer Director of Music, David Fister our AV technician and who is the subject of this month’s “Staff Spotlight”, and Debbie Savage who will be joining us as our new Director of Finance. Do take the time to read thoroughly this edition of the Outreach. There is much for which to be grateful and much for which to be hopeful. Finally, as I write this there has been another school massacre, this time in Texas. How weary, angry and frustrated we are! We cry out “How long, O Lord?!” And when we add the racially motivated shooting in Buffalo, the war in Ukraine, inflation, political divisions, and the fact that COVID-19 is still with us, well, it can all be overwhelming. So what do we do? May I suggest we start with where we are, locally, in our own spheres of influence. That we seek to be channels of God’s love, compassion and justice where we are. A prayer that has helped me in this, and which I have shared with many of you, I offer again as a way to be free of our fears and anxieties and to be open to those positive overwhelmings of the love and power of God.

Dear Friends, Below is the church's year-to-date (YTD) income statement comparison through March 31, 2022. Total income grew 7% year-over-year which was above expectations. Offerings were up 5% and Preschool income was up 11% reflecting it’s rapid financial recovery from COVID related restrictions. Both were above budget. Total Expenses increased 7% with the church fully opened, but are still well below budget driven by reduced personnel costs in the first quarter. YTD net income was a favorable $58,380 comparable to $53,534 in 2021. Due to your generosity and our expense controls, we are encouraged by our first quarter financial results and are confident in what the future brings. We are also encouraged by the results of our 2022 Generosity Campaign. Our 2022 pledges have exceeded last year and we are now at 95% of our $1,500,000 pledge goal. On a side note, while we are saddened by the departure of Director of Finance, Anna Focht, for personal reasons, we are grateful for her numerous contributions over the four years she was here. She made a significant long-term impact and will be missed. It is inspiring to encounter supportive members and friends such as yourselves who are willing to take part to help ensure our future. This year the Deacons have focused on the theme of finding JOY while we grow and serve. We invite everyone in the congregation to share in this JOY of personal growth and service. Please contact your deacon if you are willing to serve fellow members who need assistance with every day things most of us can do without even thinking about it.
Christian JOY acknowledges our salvation and victory over death.
Here are some examples of the nature of JOY as described in the New Testament.
We have JOY knowing that even the darkest of times will be followed by God's blessings.
JOY begins in Jesus, and when we serve him by loving and caring for others we are filled with the JOY of Jesus.
PSALM 30:4–5: “Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but JOY comes with the morning.”
JOHN 15:10-12: “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my JOY may be in you, and that your joy may be full. ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.’” We have JOY because we have faith that we are forgiven of all our sins as the result of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. LUKE 15:7: “I tell you, there will be more JOY in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” Our place in God's beautiful creation gives us JOY. 1 CHRONICLES 16:32–34: “Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall the trees of the forest sing for JOY before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!”
PSALM 20:4–5: “May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans! May we shout for JOY over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!”
JOY is impossible without the hope we find in the Gospels. ROMANS 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all JOY and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” JOY is one of the rewards (fruits) of service to others. GALATIANS 5:22–23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, JOY, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” JOY comes through living your faith even when times get tough. JAMES 1:2: “Count it all JOY, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”
We experience JOY just by being in the presence of Jesus by serving others. PSALM 16:11: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of JOY; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” PSALM 95:1–2: “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a JOYFUL noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a JOYFUL noise to him with songs of praise!”

Christ Caring for People through People Stephen Ministry is a lay caring ministry being used by thousands of congregations to increase care and outreach to hurting people. Feed the 5,000 Grace Place for Children and Families
always welcomes volunteers! Opportunities are available for those who would like to volunteer once or twice-a-week, monthly, several times per year, or occasionally for special events. Our educational programs and Friday Food Pantry can use your talents! Volunteer in our Bright Beginnings Early Childhood Education classrooms this summer for our Kindergarten Readiness Program. Assist in the classroom alongside a teacher. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 12:30 – 2:30pm. The Academy of Leaders Elementary and Middle School Summer Camps need volunteers this summer! Volunteers will assist with academic lessons, wellness activities, and personal enrichment. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday, with both morning and afternoon shifts available. The Elementary Summer Camp is a great opportunity for High School Students to gain experience and volunteer hours! GROWING YOUNG RETREAT RECAP A gathering of 4 young adults and 10 adults to explore the possibilities of finding a significant role in a child’s, a youth’s and a young adult’s life was greatly received. It was the very first workshop of its kind which met April 1-3, 2022 here at FPCN. We are not alone on this endeavor; it is now a nationwide Fuller Youth Institute “Growing Young” movement in many churches. We, however, were the first to take the steps in creating a safe space for 3 days for self-awareness, deep soul searching, sharing of faith and listening, as confirmed by our coach from Fuller, Katie Sanders. Every detail was planned with a purpose for those who have chosen to step up to the fulfilling task of recognizing the significance in everyone especially our youth of all ages and those approaching adulthood. But to do such work, we first discovered that it was necessary to go inward into our own lives. How did we feel, and how did we deal with the various experiences we encountered in our lives? Our very reactions come from this deep place of recognizing that we all carry memories, joys, hurts and “shadows”. And many of us who participated were also able to name someone in our young lives that “WAS” that significant adult (this term coined by Fuller as an adult with a great impact in the life of a youth and their faith formation journey), who was “there”, and who walked with us through our journey of growing older. Part of the Growing Young initiative is “Empathizing with our Young People.” To better equip ourselves, we learned from our young adults in listening sessions to better understand and empathize with them. We asked them what they hope to get from our church family and what it is like to be growing up in today’s world. Their words were incredible as they shared their reality and the struggles they face every day - stories of the unprecedented multitude of chaos and disruptions, fears and losses, and, also stories of hope and beauty.
The workshop was led by two professional facilitators, Rev. James Encinas and Grace McLaren, who brilliantly brought us through some difficult questions with grace, laughter and tears. We learned how to listen deeply, ask better questions, and just be present with our youth and young adults. And it was only the beginning. We are now planning the next steps which include another workshop in the fall, next meetings with youth, and the frameworks needed to slowly build a solid foundation for this ministry. It will be fluid and people will come and go with the seasons in their lives. But a true commitment to be visible to our children, youth and young adults will be evident. Imagine, being young, and walking into a room full of unknown adult faces. Anxiety sets in, and you are ready to run out. But then you see someone approaching you, and you realize you know their name. It was that person who sat with you those 3 days, who wasn’t afraid to show vulnerability and who listened to yours. It was that person who laughed with you and cried with you, who reassured you that you are loved, and who was STILL listening. Imagine how wonderful it could feel to no longer be invisible. Imagine. David Fister Audio-Visual Technician David Fister is a Native of Illinois and has been in the Naples area since 2019. David attended high school in the Southwest Suburbs of Chicago where he played football, baseball, hockey and was President of Computer Club, Science Club, Chess Club and Class Treasurer. After studying Criminal Justice and Psychology at Joliet Junior College, David went on to play bass guitar with Atlantic
Records where he would acquire a further love for Audio and Video production. David used these skills to help his Mother as Worship Arts Director at Peace Community Church in Illinois. He went on to complete his Google IT certification and looks forward to sharing his talents with the congregation, staff, and community. David's parents and siblings are Naples small business owners who reside in Bonita Springs. He enjoys visiting his nephews' baseball games, and studying film and music. David is working on enhancing the Live Video Stream with updated graphics and hardware. He looks forward to helping in person attendees, as well as those at hometo have more options for viewing the bulletin and prayers on screen.

Debbie comes to us with a degree from the University of Michigan, has served not only as a Senior Accountant at a large church in North Carolina but is trained in Stephen Ministry, has co-facilitated a Divorce Care class and served as facilitator and leader for Financial Programs throughout her career.
