Rev. Craig Goodrich, Senior Pastor/Head of Staff Dear members and friends (wherever you are!), One of my favorite authors is Presbyterian minister, Frederick Beuchner. I daily read his devotional book “Listening to your Life.” Here is one insightful entry:
“There is no event so commonplace but that God is present within it, always hiddenly, always leaving you room to recognize him or not recognize him… Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments and life itself is grace.” In other words, slow down and pay attention. Be open to God’s grace and the Spirit. Beuchner’s words are timely for us, I think, as life slows down here in Naples, as summer approaches, and as many of you have returned to the northlands. But wherever we are, I encourage us to breathe deeply, to look on life with eyes of gratitude and to give thanks. To see what God is up to in our lives, individually and together. As I look back over the last month, I give thanks for vibrant worship and for this caring community of grace. I give thanks for the confirmation of six young people in worship on Mother’s Day and for new members who have joined our congregation. I give thanks for our wonderful staff and the leadership of elders and deacons. And I give thanks for the lives of cherished members, “saints” who have finished their race and who we have commended to God.

As we look ahead and seek to discern where God is leading us, we will remember on Memorial Day weekend those who have sacrificed their lives for our country and remember that Jesus said and showed that there is “no greater love” than that one would lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Also in the weeks and months ahead I hope you will continue to make payments on your pledges and/or make contributions as this will help greatly with our cash flow and deficit. Do please read the financial report from our Finance Chair, Richard Green on page 4. Finally, wherever you are and wherever you travel, I encourage you to take time to pray, to read Scripture, to worship and to serve. We need both time alone and time in community. Don’t neglect either. Pay attention. Keep your eyes, ears, and hearts open to God and to the needs of the world. Life is grace and Jesus is Lord. Faithfully and Gratefully,

Spring Scholarship Concert Many thanks to all who supported Victoria Woodcock, Alana Ferraro and Kaylyn Williams at their concert on May 1. Each of the singers has an opportunity to study in Europe this summer and this concert was given to help defray the costs of their tuition. It was a fantastic event that truly showed how fortunate we are to have them singing with our Chancel Choir. Their depth of talent was evident in the variety
of repertoire that they sang. We wish them safe travels and look forward to their return. Because of your generosity, the cost of their tuition for their European summer studies has been greatly reduced!

To the congregation: This is a midyear financial report. We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful and warm church “In the Heart of Naples with the love of God�. Thank you for your faithful financial commitments.
At this time of year our tithes and offerings supply about one half of our annual expenses. We had a small surplus from the Season but that will disappear in July and we project that we will start going in the hole each month until next December. We are continuing to make some improvements to the church from the capital reserves we set aside from the sale of the north parking lot. We need to increase our giving if at all possible to keep our losses as low as possible. We are fortunate that our pledges were up over last year but it is our total giving that we live by. I am optimistic that
our attendance will continue to increase with Rev. Craig Goodrich as our Pastor. With increased membership and attendance we can continue to close our deficit gap. Our forecast for the year is for a deficit of $261,125 before we put money into our capital reserve for future major repairs such as the roof. We always appreciate your gifts to the Endowment fund that helps us have reserves for the future. With us all pulling together we will rebuild First Presbyterian Church back up to the glory of God. Missions

Sometimes the things we do are just habit. The Missions Committee is receiving very positive comments from the congregation about the mission work of this church. Huddle is collecting more bags and money than ever before for Feed the 5000. Everyone that gets a cookie on Sunday morning is recognizing the CareBear, our collection jar for the Weekend PowerPack Program. You have brought in clothing, toiletries, shoes and food for the collection boxes for Mision Peniel. You are getting into the habit of contributing, joining, and praying. Thank you. This month we disburse our budgeted funds to the agencies we support. Those agencies introduced themselves at our January Mission Fair. They are: Mision Peniel, Grace Place, St. Matthew’s House, Shelter for Abused Women and Children, Immokalee Child Care Center, The Guadalupe Center, Helps Outreach, Kempers Seminary, and World Missions PCUSA.
We also have a Local Mission Fund for on-going work. In April we contributed to the Relay for Life activities of our youth. We are grateful for your support of this fund for things like food pantries in town that might need additional funds during the summer. Since January we have been involved in the Weekend PowerPack Program, formerly the BackPack Program for children who need food for the weekends when they are not in school. The CareBear is there to collect your change every Sunday. It’s a habit we should all have-Feed the Hungry--and you dropping money every Sunday into that little Bear jar makes you a part of it. Each food pack costs over $5 per week, per child. Presently we prepare 9 food packs for children at Big Cypress Elementary School. By the time August arrives, we will not be surprised that they will need more. So we are building up our funds all summer and ask you to remember to “feed” the CareBear. The Missions Committee will meet in July to set dates and coordinate future activities such as workdays at Mision Peniel, St. Matthew’s House, Grace Place and Habitat for Humanity. We will be signing up for Salvation Army bell ringers again, Meals of Hope, Mission Tours, and Weekend Power Pack volunteers to adopt the CareBear for a month and deliver the food

packs to the school on Fridays. You will again be able to buy a Christmas gift for a needy child by taking a name from the Angel Tree. And as always, please take a bag to fill for Feed the 5,000 each month or make a monetary donation for this wonderful charitable project. These are great habits to have. I am promoting getting into the habit of contributing in whatever way you can and praying for the mission work of our church. Once these habits

Feed the 5,000 Youth Haven, located in Naples, provides abandoned, neglected or abused children with shelter, counseling, therapy, and training. In June we are gathering food for Youth Haven.

Ushers will have a Publix bag with a list of desired food items available as you leave the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of the month. Please bring your food to the 6th Street church entrance before service on the second Sunday. If you prefer, checks may be made payable to "First Presbyterian Church" with the memo marked "Feed the 5,000" and placed in the collection plate.

STEPHEN MINISTRY In the Children’s sermon on Sunday, May 1, Shana Dublan used the illustration of providing caregivers for the family's beloved cats when the family vacation meant leaving the cats behind. She moved on to explain that Jesus ascended to Heaven. But Jesus is still watching over us. Also He gave us the Holy Spirit so we would care for each other. In the adult sermon, Reverend Goodrich referring to Ephesians 1:1523 and Acts 1:1-1, discussed that Jesus called upon the Holy Spirit to provide guidance upon His ascension to Heaven.
There are many ways that our congregants call upon the Holy Spirit as we care for each other. Our Stephen Ministers provide one kind of care. They are trained to provide ongoing one-to-one Christian care for a person facing a difficult time in life. It’s so hard to believe that June is here and with that, the end of our 50th school year at First Presbyterian Preschool. It’s always such a pleasure and a blessing to watch our students grow and develop throughout the year. It’s always interesting to look back at pictures taken the first day of school and compare the students then to now. Join Us! Deacons “Thank You” Brunch Please join us for a tasty brunch in Spencer Hall following the Sunday Service and Congregational Meeting on June 12. In addition to building fellowship among those of us who brave Naples in the off-season, the deacons have some “thank you’s” to hand out. The brunch is free, so the only “charge” you’ll have is the energy you’ll feel by fellowshipping with some wonderful First Presbyterian folks. Come one, come all, bring a good appetite, and see what the “thank you’s” are all about.
A Congregational Meeting will be held on Sunday, June 12 immediately following the worship service.

Dear Friends at FPC, We would like to thank you for all your prayers, cards and kind words during my mom’s illness and passing.
