Though we learned that the PNC is still hard at work…I’m wondering how well you’re preparing to greet your new pastor when he or she arrives. And what about their family, should they have one? How your pastor and their family experience your reckless generosity will set the tone for their season of ministry with you.

As another year comes to a close, I find myself in awe of my staff and their accomplishments. This year, the Preschool served almost 100 students ranging in age from two to five years old. We were fortunate to have 14 staff members return this year, and we were fortunate to add Liz Psota to our office team.

Montreat is HERE!!  On Saturday, June 7 we begin our trip. Seven students, Mike Calyore and I will begin our first day of driving, leaving the church parking lot at 7 a.m. We will be staying and worshiping with Roswell Presbyterian Church in Georgia on our way. After  service Sunday morning, we will finish the drive to Black Mountain, North Carolina. We are so excited for this trip and hope that you share our excitement. Even for those of you who  are not going with us, you are all going with us in our hearts. We could not have done this without you. Make sure you check Facebook for picture updates.

Youth Work with a team to decorate 6 rooms - We have some really great ideas and to make it happen we need the help. The jobs will not be too strenuous and for some of them you can even sit down. A team to help sort, organize and put away the week after VBS – Unleash your inner custodian. Volunteers to help with our after VBS Sunday Festival on July 13 – All VBS families are invited to come to our worship service. The children will sing during the Children’s time, and afterwards there will be a FESTIVAL! Kids will enjoy a bounce house, a water slide, a toddler obstacle course and slip and slide as well as a dunk tank. I will be setting up a rotation of people to sit in the tank. We will also have balloon animals and a face painting. This will be a large event with a lot of fun. If you can help supervise one of the entertainment stations, please let me know.

Pizza and waterslides! Yes, I did just say that. On Wednesday, June 25, meet at church at 10 a.m. and be prepared for some real fun! We will go to Cici’s pizza for lunch and head to Sun ‘N’ Fun Lagoon for the day. Sign up with me, or download a registration form from the Church’s website! All this for just $15 per person! Maybe you really want to help with VBS, but you will not be in town. I will have a list in Spencer Hall by the VBS Corner with Vacation Bible School items that we will need for the week. Keep in mind, we will be July 7 to 11— 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. feeding 100 people for five days; that is 500 snacks! There have also been occasions when a church member is in the hospital, unable to communicate, and we need to contact family. Who Needs a Ride to Church? The Deacons wish to remind parishioners that we’re still interested in hearing from anyone who may need a ride to church on Sunday. This applies to anyone whose transportation circumstances, either permanently or temporarily, make it difficult for them to get to church. Our goal is to make sure that anyone who wishes to worship on Sunday is not prevented from doing so because of transportation issues. Anyone interested in exploring the possibility of getting a ride to and from church should contact their parish deacon or Gary Root at 239.963.9838 or email adsroot@aol.com. If you’re in need of a ride, we’ll do our best to make it happen.

The Missions of First Presbyterian Church at work this past season:

Feed the 5,000 Luke 9:10-17 When members and friends return to the North, those of us who can help are fewer, and some of the disadvantaged may lose temporary jobs or work fewer hours. Our support during Summer months is especially important. During June we collect food for Youth Haven. Youth Haven serves more than 2,400 children and family members providing shelter, counseling, food, and support. They desire: 2 cans of meat, fish, or chicken 2 cans of vegetables 1 pound of rice 2 pounds of pasta 2 baby food items peanut butter and/or jelly macaroni and cheese fruit cups, applesauce, or fruit juice boxes In July the Salvation Army is our targeted agency. The Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Their mission is to teach and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name. Items on their wish list are: 2 cans kidney, pinto, or baked beans 2 cans tuna, chicken, or ham 1 jar peanut butter 1 jar jelly 1 can fruit 2 cans of vegetables 1 box macaroni and cheese 1 pound dry pasta 2 pounds of rice Ushers will have a Publix bag, with a list of food requests, as you leave the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of the month. Please return it with your donated items to the Sixth Street entrance on the next Sunday. Checks are welcome, and should be payable to the "First Presbyterian Church" with the memo marked "Feed the 5,000."



Treasurer's Report As we head into the summer of our second year without a permanent Senior Pastor, it would be beneficial to provide a financial picture of where we are at this time. The Church's operating loss for 2013 was approximately $317,000 and this was subsidized by permitted transfers from our unrestricted Endowment appreciation fund of approximately $311,000. We had an additional cash drain for the mortgage payment of $100,000 on the parking lot property and were able to support that from operating cash on hand built up over prior years. The good news is church members and staff have been sensitive to and supportive of our financial woes, and our Endowment Fund enjoyed a healthy 2013 market appreciation. Our 2014 projections have been more challenging for many reasons including continued decreases in attendance beginning in early 2013 and our inability to accumulate cash reserves as they were used to fund operations during 2013.

Therefore, a "bare bones" budget was developed for 2014 with the knowledge there would be many sacrifices in order to make the budget work for us. Even with such a tight budget, our projected operating loss for 2014 is approximately $426,000. Added to that are cash outlays for the mortgage payment and other items not included in the budget bringing the total to a cash loss of approximately $592,000 anticipated for 2014. We will be able to subsidize some of this with permitted withdrawals again from our unrestricted Endowment appreciation fund of approximately $330,000. The remaining balance will need to be subsidized by permitted withdrawals from our unrestricted Endowment principal fund, something we had hoped to avoid.

Congratulations graduates Catherine Calyore, daughter of Mike and Chris Calyore, graduated magna cum laude from Hope College in Holland, Michigan on May 4. Catherine received her Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry and minor in Mathematics. First Presbyterian Preschool VPK teacher, Bernie Shields, was awarded the 2014 Excellence in Education award from the Bonita Springs Optimist Club.

This past December Christian Calyore received his Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Hope College. Christian is a project engineer working on hip replacement products for Zimmer Corporation in Warsaw, IN.
