What a wonderful Advent Season and Christmas Eve! Many children and families gathered at 5 p.m. for the best Christmas pageant ever and at 7 p.m. we enjoyed wonderful music from our choir and the dynamic Gerlach duo of Brice at the piano and Colin on the violin. And I can still see the candles glowing and hear the music as we all sang Silent Night.

Forum (formerly known as the Men’s Club) begins on Monday, January 14. All of this you will find on the next pages. Mission opportunities abound (see page 7) and our strategic work to discern God’s will for our congregation continues (see page 5).
I particularly want to highlight our Sunday, January 20 “Season of Music” concert. That afternoon at 4 p.m. we will enjoy the music of singer/songwriter/poet, Carrie Newcomer with Gary Walters on piano. Andie and I have been so inspired by Carrie’s music. She has the gift of being able to articulate with just the right words and music the longings and blessings of faith, hope and love. Looking ahead to January, we continue with the Christmas season until Epiphany Sunday on January 6, when the three Wise Men reached Bethlehem and paid homage to Jesus with their gifts. They were on a journey of faith and so are we.

Carrie Newcomer is a Grammy-winning songwriter, recording artist, performer and educator. She has been described as a "prairie mystic" by the Boston Globe and one who "asks all the right questions" by Rolling Stone. Recent appearances include PBS Religion and Ethics and National Award Winning Krista Tippett's On Being. Carrie has 16 nationally released albums on Available Light & Concord/Rounder including The Beautiful Not Yet, A Permeable Life and Everything is Everywhere . There is no charge for the concert. Micah 6:8 A new year...it’s a time for resolutions, a time to reflect on where we have been and where we are going…Christianity certainly provides guidance. We are to live in faith and try to live as Jesus instructed.
Our nation and our church community give us so many reasons to enter the new year with gratitude and with purpose. First Presbyterian strives to show “the love of God in the heart of Naples” and, through our mission work, to areas beyond. There are numerous ways for each of us to serve even if busy or infirmed. Additionally, there are many ways our church serves us. If you are in need of a member of our Stephen Minister Care Giving team to help you in a difficult time in your life, please contact us for information. God’s Will for FPC Naples Going Forward

After two organizational meetings, the Strategic Direction team met together for the first time on December 6, with 34 FPC Naples members in attendance. There are a total of 53 people on the team, but some have conflicts yet wish to be “kept in the loop” and attend meetings when they can.
We then began a workshop devoted to a church SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). Unfortunately, our agenda was too ambitious, especially given the number of attendees, so we were only able to deal with Strengths and Weaknesses. This is a work-in-progress, and we will be picking up where we left off in our next meeting.
As reported in the two previous Outreach issues, we will be meeting regularly from now until May to produce a short document having three important parts: A Mission Statement – which will address, “Why does FPC Naples exist?” A Vision Statement – which will address, “What does God want us to achieve in the next 3-5 years?” Key Objectives – to direct future activities and plans for our church and be fully consistent with our Mission and Vision Statements. Following a welcome to everyone and an opening prayer, Pastor Craig called our attention to the first chapter in our PCUSA Book of Order which speaks to “The Mission of the Church” and “God’s Mission.” He gave copies to all present and asked everyone to read it prior to the next meeting. Time was also devoted to discussing a book suggested by two members of the team, Transforming Congregational Culture. This book, written by a pastor who has studied recent trends of mainline Protestant church membership declines, has the potential to be very helpful as we attempt to discern God’s Will for FPC Naples going forward. The group then looked at some background data including demographic and membership data as well as a map showing the distribution of member households within our parishes. A summary of the first chapter of the Book of Order was also distributed to emphasize the importance of

E
very year our Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) students participate in a special literacy celebration. During this celebration, held in December, a special guest joined us to read Polar Express. The students, and teachers, wore their PJ’s to school, rode the “train”, listened to the story, and enjoyed cookies and hot chocolate. This year’s event was particularly exciting because Mrs. Claus was our guest reader. Mrs. Claus, aka our very own Andie Goodrich, was fabulous! The students were very interested in hearing about how Mrs. Claus got here and what Santa was doing to prepare for Christmas Eve. We heard that the reindeer were down at the beach cooling off after making the trip from the North Pole. We would like to thank Andie for spending her morning with us and for making the event so memorable for our students, parents and siblings that attended. Her involvement with her character, Mrs. Claus, was such a delight to see. The Preschool staff and students wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Women Of the Way EXPLORING ABRAHAMIC RELIGIONS A five week series of dinner presentations will be offered January 23 through February 20 in Spencer Hall. Guest speakers will include Rabbi Miller from Temple Beth Shalom, Imam Muhammed Nour from the Islamic Center of Naples, and Father Philemon Patitsas of St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church. Rev. Rex Childs will introduce the series with an overview and will help bring together what we have learned in the final session. This series is offered in response to expressed interest in learning about different faith perspectives. January 23—Rev. Do you ever hunger for a deeper experience of God’s presence in your everyday life? In the busyness and distraction of your days, do you sometimes wonder if you’re just living on the surface of things? If your answer is yes, come join the “Women of the Way” in a study of Marjorie Thompson’s classic book “Soul Feast: An Invitation to the Spiritual Life.” We will explore the selected themes of prayer, spiritual reading, self and God awareness and Sabbath rest, all essential tools for authentic and compassionate Christian living.
The 7-session study will include fellowship, teaching and small group discussion, and our purpose is to learn and grow together and strengthen the bonds between us. Sam Parish Monday, January 14 James "Sam" Parish is the Director of Operations and Educational Specialist for the Holocaust
Museum & Educational Center of Southwest Florida. He earned a
Master of Science in History, taught high school social studies and taught history as an adjunct instructor for a community college in Florida. He is a published author and has been with the Holocaust Museum for 6 years.
Investing in 2019 Monday, January 28 Adria Starkey is president of the local Finemark bank and has been active in many Collier organizations. She has been honored by various groups. Robert Ramsey is her investor and will give a great talk on where to put our money. It should be very beneficial to us all.
All men are welcome to join us on the first and third Wednesday’s of the month at 8 a.m. On Wednesday, January 2, Rev. Rex Childs will lead us in the discussion of “Men and Unity” in Spencer Hall. On Wednesday, January 16 we will kick off our 2019 season with a light breakfast in Spencer Hall. Rev. Craig Goodrich will lead the discussion. We welcome back our northern friends and look forward to their participation. Attendance has been slowly increasing and for this we are grateful. Our gatherings are open to all men of the congregation. Our hope is to see the level of participation continue. We would like to find an appropriate name for ourselves (think WOW and HUDDLE). The men’s lunch-time Bible discussion group meets each Thursday from noon to 1:15 p.m. in Spencer Hall. All men are invited and encouraged to bring a bag lunch, a Bible, and gather with us.

Presbyterian Women are overjoyed to report charitable giving for 2018 as follows: 14 local agencies received $6,600. The Salvation Army, Immokalee Friendship House, and Shelter for Abused Women and Children each received additional Christmas giving of $750. Two national PW offerings: The Birthday Offering which was collected in March totaled $369 and the Thank Offering collected in November was $917. “Feed the Hungry” which is a donation at every Gathering in the jars on each table totaled $1,009.40 in 2018 in support of Collier Harvest. $370 was donated for Blanket Sunday plus many blankets and jackets. Fellowship of the Least Coin, a traditional Church Women United offering totaled $61.50 Our annual PW pledge letter will reach all women of our church in early January and we ask for your blessing and contribution to our continued mission work. This pledge is PW’s only fundraiser.
