Happy New Year! Can you believe it is already 2017? There is much to look forward to in the coming year, but first a quick look back.

Looking back on the month of December, it has been filled with Advent and Christmas joy! Wonderful music on Sunday mornings in our beautifully decorated sanctuary and special events: the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and the Naples Philharmonic Chorus performing Handel’s Messiah in our sanctuary followed a few days later by the exceptional concert with the combined choirs of First Presbyterian Church and Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church. Our Advent Sermon Series has been “The Season of Hope” in which we have proclaimed the hope of our faith, recognizing that hope always is about the future and what we can imagine, but it is felt and experienced in the present. I am very hopeful about the year ahead!

A Season of Music The Voices of Naples “With a Voice of Singing� Dr. Douglas Renfroe, conductor Sunday, January 29, 2017 4:00 p.m.
Voices of Naples was formed in 2002 to provide an opportunity for singers in Naples and Collier County to study and perform a variety of choral music. Members are selected by referral and audition, studying an eclectic repertoire ranging from classical to pop. Voices of Naples also has the mission of providing scholarships to deserving high school seniors in Collier and Lee Counties who wish to study vocal music and related studies in college. In August of 2014 members participated in an International Chamber Organ and Choral Festival in Quebec City under the direction of Dr. Douglas Renfroe. They had the opportunity to sing at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, completed in 1804 where Dr. Renfroe is Artist-in-Residence throughout the summer. In 2016 some members joined the choir of The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in an International Chamber Organ and Choral Festival in Quebec City led by Dr. Renfroe. This concert will feature music from the late Renaissance and early Baroque to contemporary Americana. In addition to With a Voice of Singing by Martin Shaw, the choir will also perform Gabrielli's In Ecclesiis, a lovely arrangement of Homeward Bound. The concert will also include a few Spirituals and lighter fare.

Did you notice the lovely bell that John Kay rang as he walked around Spencer Hall in his Salvation Army apron and Santa hat? This bell was a gift Nancy and John donated for our annual recruiting of bell ringers. Our thank you goes to them for recruiting bell ringers four consecutive Sundays and for making reminder contacts the day before their volunteer time. We also appreciate the Kays visits during the week to see that all was going well at the volunteer stations. In addition, the Mission committee thanks all the church members who graciously volunteered their time as bell ringers. Thanks to all who supported our Angel Tree. We provided 119 gifts for the migrant farmer workers children of Lipman Produce. Many thanks to Saralene Oldham, Karen Ryan and Jill Ehrenfried who sorted and bagged the gifts. Also thanks to Santa’s helpers, Michael Bennett and Ben Currier for delivering the gifts. First Presbyterian Church has logged 120 hours in the past three months for Habitat for Humanity, performing tasks of painting, caulking, weatherstripping, hanging siding and doors; many skills learned on the job site! The biggest bonus was being able to donate these hours to a single mother to help her reach the 500 hour goal needed to secure her home. As we venture into 2017, could you spare a four hour work day to help build a home for Habitat? Save the dates! Monday, January 16; Wednesday, February 8; Thursday, March 9 and Tuesday, April 4. Feed the 5,000 This month we are gathering food for Salvation Army. The mission of the Salvation Army is based on the Bible to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to meet human needs in His name. Ushers will have a Publix bag with a list of desired food items available as you leave the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of the month. Please bring your food to the Sixth Street church entrance before service on the second Sunday. PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S GATHERING The January Gathering of the Presbyterian Women will be held on Wednesday, January 11 at noon. The luncheon cost is $7 and reservations can be made in Spencer Hall. The program will be given by Ana Stevenson, Founder and President of PATH2FREEDOM. Their mission is to help victims of human trafficking become healthy in spirit, soul and body.
The February Gathering will be held on Wednesday, February 1 at noon. The luncheon cost is $10 and reservations can be made Sunday, January 22 and Sunday, January 29 in Spencer Hall following the worship services. The program will be presented by Cathy LaGrow, author of The Waiting: The true
story of a lost child, a lifetime of longing, and a miracle for a mother who never gave up, a story about her grandmother. Her cousin, Brian Lee, will also speak on his role in reuniting his mother with her birth mother.

Men’s Morning Fellowship A Ministry of Encouragement Men of First Presbyterian Church are invited to a new and exciting program that will deal with a man’s relationship with God and church, to include building a strong fellowship with all participants. This program will kick off on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 and will meet in Spencer Hall on the first and third Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. through April. A new class will be offered to women of the church beginning Thursday, January 26 in Spencer Hall from 9:15 – 11 a.m. and will continue weekly through April 6. At our first gathering, visiting Presbyterian pastor, Rev. Kathy Goodrich (Craig and Andie’s sister-in-law) will introduce the topic of Jesus and his relationship with the women he encountered during his years of ministry, exploring both his attitude towards women generally and his interactions with those he knew and called by name. Throughout the class we will be asking the questions, “What does it mean for me to be called by name? How can I live more fully in the freedom and love that Jesus offers?” Each class will include a time of teaching followed by small group questions and discussion. THE MORAL LEADERSHIP OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES Dr. Paul J. Maurer is the eighth president of Montreat College. As a visionary and results-driven Christian leader, he believes deeply in the value of Christcentered higher education. Drawing from more than 25 years of leadership in nonprofit and higher education administration, Dr. Maurer has led efforts in governance, organizational development, marketing and communications, adult and graduate studies, and government relations. This non-partisan talk explores the question of whether the president of the United States has historically provided moral leadership to the nation, and whether we should expect this of our presidents today. The conversation surrounding this question is hotly debated in our age of pluralism. The constitution is reviewed regarding what it says about the topic, including the topic of the separation of church and state. The case is made that separation of church and state is distinct from the idea of separating morality from politics. Presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton are examined for their rhetoric on religion, morality, and moral leadership. In the end, we focus on two presidents in the modern era, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, to explore their religious and moral rhetoric, and whether it was connected to public policy. The results of the research may surprise you! Dr. Maurer is a scholar of the American presidency, with specific expertise in the moral and religious rhetoric of U.S. presidents. He and his wife, Joellen, have been married since 1989, and have four children: Jon, Liz, Daniel and Sarah.
