I remember
in my 20’s, I became Presbyterian. I joined Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, the largest church in the denomination with over 11,000 members. During that period in the church’s history, the senior pastor, Dr. Frank Harrington, was ill and eventually passed on. I joined when they had an interim pastor. I didn’t join because of who served as the minister or who would do it later. I joined because I sensed God’s call for me there at that time. Not too much longer after I joined that church, many of my peers and I experienced a call into ministry or missions. For me, I received a call to go into missions in Argentina, which later turned into a call into ordained ministry. As our church is going through a time of transition, I wonder what kind of new leadership emerges, what new sense of purpose develops, and what surprise of God’s grace awaits us. Indeed we can let this be a time of wonder and excitement.

A Season of Music Anton’s Ensemble Soirée

Founded in Europe as a group of internationally acclaimed concert musicians, Anton’s Ensemble Soirée offers a wonderful selection of exquisite music – generally known as “salon music” -- spanning centuries of musical style from Viennese melodies, light classical and operetta to Broadway musicals and jazz standards. This captivating music encompasses the lighter side of melody and it flourished in the elegant coffee houses and private residences frequented by European society throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Hector Olivera is a passionate, gifted, and unique musician, whose personal interpretations of both classical and popular music have amazed and delighted audiences around the world.
Led by violinist Anton Sikuta, former concertmaster of the State Opera Orchestra, Darmstadt, Germany and of the Johann Strauss Orchestra, Wiesbaden, Anton’s Ensemble Soirée is dedicated to preserving this wonderful salon music tradition and to introducing these delightful tunes to the ears of new audiences in Florida. In addition to presenting the works of Kreisler, Gershwin, Strauss and other wellknown composers, the Ensemble is constantly striving to seek out arrangements of melodic compositions of lesser known but equally talented artists which have long disappeared from modern publishing houses. Come, relax and be entertained with Anton’s Ensemble Soirée!
He has performed as guest soloist with many orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Fort Wayne Symphony, the Dover-New Philadelphia Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Amsterdam Baroque Ensemble, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Pasadena Symphony (for whom he produced a limited Gold CD edition of Saint Saëns' Symphony No. 3). Although he is most famous for his prodigious technical proficiency, Hector Olivera’s amazing effect on audiences has made many of the most sophisticated and demanding organ aficionados claim that Hector Olivera is one of the greatest organists in the world today. You won’t want to miss this concert!

Women’s Bible Study All women are invited to join leader, Jeanie Weigel for a weekly Bible Study beginning Thursday, January 16. The study will be on the book “Jesus the One and Only” by Beth Moore. Adult Bible Study is held each Sunday from 8:30—9:15 a.m. in Room 204. Please contact Gretchen Oakley at 239.591.3467 for more information. The book of Acts provides a detailed, orderly, eyewitness account of the birth and growth of the early church and the spread of the gospel immediately after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its narrative supplies a bridge connecting the life and ministry of Jesus to the life of the church and the witness of the earliest believers. The work also constructs a link between the Gospels and the Epistles. In Acts, as Luke describes the spread of the gospel and the ministry of the apostles, he focuses primarily on two, Peter and Paul.
Adult church on Wednesday series A five-week series will begin Wednesday, January 22. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. Class is held from 6 - 7 p.m. in Spencer Hall.
Animate: Faith.
This adult course imaginatively explores central topics of Christianity. In each Animate: Faith session, the group will watch a video featuring a leading voice from the Christian faith, spend time on personal reflection and journaling, and share ideas with the group. Each session delves into a faith topic: God, religion, Jesus, salvation, the cross, the Bible, and church. All dinners must be paid for in advance and cannot be paid for at the door. If you plan on having dinner, the cost is $40 for the five meals (no refunds will be issued for individual weeks missed). We would like to take this opportunity to extend our appreciation to all the Preschool families and Church families that support the program being offered at First Presbyterian Preschool. I personally would like to thank the Preschool staff for their hard work and dedication. We’ve had some curve balls thrown our way this year, but the staff has been there with their catcher’s mitt on, ready and waiting! We’ve experienced an overwhelming response of support for our Barnes and Noble Bookfair, our VPK Polar Express Literacy Party, our Annual Christmas Sing Along, Preschool Sunday, VPK 5th Avenue Christmas Walk and our Thanksgiving Feast. WINTERJAM Retreat WEEKEND Middle and High School Students
January 10-12 2014 Friday, January 10 - Leave church after school and drive to Tampa. Forest Hills Church will host the youth group and chaperones for a sleepover on Friday night. Saturday, January 11 - attend WINTERJAM Concerts featuring Colton Dixon, Newsboys, Tenth Avenue North, Thousand Foot Crutch and many more. After the concert we return to Naples and sleep at the church and attend worship on Sunday. No Youth Group on Sunday, January 12. It’s going to be an amazing weekend! $35 includes transportation, concert tickets, dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Saturday dinner is on your own at the concert. You can bring extra money for souvenirs! Sign up/pay by January 8. CHAOS Donations needed CHAOS Student Ministries is asking for donations of items needed for programming. Items include glue bottles, glue sticks, white poster board, markers (washable, Sharpies), crayons, colored pencils, water color paints.
If you are able to prepare a meal or part of a meal for 30 youth on Sunday evenings, please sign up on the calendar at Sign-up Central in Spencer Hall or contact Andi at 239.262.1311 ext. 229. Feed the 5,000 Luke 9:10-17 The food pantry of the Salvation Army will gain our January collections. The Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Their mission is to teach and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to meet human needs in His name.

THANK YOU Together we provided 49 bags of food to Youth Haven last month and contributed $695 to the Feed the 5,000 fund.
We are excited to once again host a Meals of Hope packing party! In a few short hours we can prepare 50,000 meals for a family of four. Each bag contains a nutritious meal that is packed with protein, vitamins and minerals. This meal will fill four hungry mouths for only $.20. As the
Mission Committee continues to focus on Mision Peniel in Immokalee, we want to increase our support of Miguel Estrada in his ministry to the migrant farm workers. Every Friday evening, Miguel serves dinner to the workers and their families and distributes clothes and shoes. Beginning January 5, 2014, there will be a box in Spencer Hall where you may deposit used clothes and shoes that are appropriate for folks working in the fields and for their families. We will make regular trips to Immokalee to deliver our collections to Miguel. Please think of Mision Peniel when you are cleaning out your closets and drawers and bring your used clothing and shoes to the church. Remember that question in the Bible – Lord, when did we see you naked and clothe you? Please help us minister to the least of these, our brothers.
