As you may know, in worship these past Sundays and over the next several weeks, we are focusing on Paul’s inspired prayer in the letter to the Ephesians (3:14-21). In fact, I hope many of us are memorizing it! At one point in the prayer Paul writes, “I pray …that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.” Don’t we all want and need that strength? And for Christ by the Holy Spirit to reside in our hearts by faith? And think about where you are rooted. Is it in the boundless love of God? May it be so for all of us both individually and in our life together as we move into the month of February. Looking back over January, much has happened. It is a wonderful time in the life of the church. Of course, the “Season” is here and we have welcomed back many friends and greeted new ones. Our new deacons and elders have come on board, with Teresa Doane serving as our new Deacon Moderator and Saralene Oldham as our Clerk of Session. Worship attendance is strong and the blue robed choir has swelled once again leading us in song under the remarkably gifted leadership of our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach. Our Season of Music concert with folksinger Carrie Newcomer was wonderfully inspiring. We have received new members and said goodbye to faithful saints. We are in the process of working on a Strategic Direction plan (page 3). Thank you Gary Root and all who are participating! The Preschool is in full swing. The Presbyterian Women and Women of the Way (WOW), continue with great participation, as does the Men’s Morning Fellowship, Speakers Forum and HUDDLE. Mission projects and opportunities abound. And speaking of Mission, mark your calendars for February 24 which is our Mission Sunday. At our January Session meeting, among other things, the elders approved our partnership with the Central Presbyterian Church in Matanzas, Cuba as well as our 2019 budget which includes a three percent raise for your amazing staff. Our staff is dedicated and strong. Our Associate Pastor, Rex Childs, has brought new energy to our church and our new Director of Children and Youth, Nancy Van Fleet, is settling in our Christian Education ministry bringing inspiration and depth. How glad we all are

that they are here! We have begun our 2019 Generosity campaign, with the theme of “Just Imagine” from Ephesians 3:20 and Commitment Sunday is February 17. Our goal is 300 pledges and $1,300,000. What is God calling you to give this year? As for preaching, just this past Sunday the Revs. George and Kathy Goodrich brought great energy and passion to worship – all the way from Montana. And looking ahead, on February 10 we will host Rev. Graham Hart as our guest preacher. For the last seventeen years Graham has served the Peace River Presbytery as our General Presbyter and has walked alongside us (and the thirty six other churches in our presbytery) both in the good and the hard times. We will thank Graham for his faithfulness. February 10 is also “Meet Your Deacon Sunday.” And in it and through it all, my hope is that as Paul prayed, that we all “may have the power to comprehend with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Isn’t that why we are here? God’s Will for FPC Going Forward

This is a continuing column dealing with the work of the Strategic Direction team whose goal is to attempt to discern God’s will for our church in the years ahead. The reader may recall that our plan is to produce a short document having a Mission Statement, a Vision Statement, and several key broad objectives for our church covering the next 3-5 years. Importantly, this document should represent our best effort at reflecting “…Thy will be done, on earth…” Our first two meetings have focused on preparing a baseline understanding of where our beloved church is at this point in time. It is common for organizations to do a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) as they begin a look at the future. We are 80% through this phase, but we will continue to review the SWOT work in case we missed things or need clarification on issues. It will be a continual work-in-progress. Speaking on behalf of our team, I am thrilled to say that we are at a perfect time to be undertaking this assignment. It has been a joy to propose and discuss our strengths. Those of us in the team meetings have come to better appreciate how important it is to have our church fully staffed…and fully staffed with strong people who we love dearly. And by “staff,” we mean both Senior Staff and Support Staff. It is an exciting time for FPC Naples.
Classical Trumpeter and Gold Medal Global Music Award Winner Mary Elizabeth Bowden has been described by Gramophone Magazine as “brilliant” and “radiant in new repertoire for trumpet.” Bowden will be performing with Kassia Ensemble, a newly formed chamber group in the city of Pittsburgh comprised exclusively of women.
There is no charge for the concert. A free-will offering will be taken. Doors open at 3 p.m. A reception will follow in Spencer Hall.
The hard work really begins in the next two meetings as we begin to hammer out a Mission Statement that 30+ church members who have strong feelings about our future can all agree on. AND, one that, with prayer and guidance from the Holy Spirit, will reflect God’s desire as to the right words that answer the question, “Why does FPC Naples exist?” Our next meeting will be on Thursday, February 7, from 3:30-5 p.m. in Spencer Hall. Anyone is welcome to join us (we welcomed a “walk-in” at our last meeting), or to join the group who is kept current with our progress via meeting minutes and other related communications pertaining to this exciting challenge. Giving at First Presbyterian Church At First Presbyterian Church of Naples, we are constantly looking for new ways to help strengthen our ministries and the communities we serve. It is through your continued generosity that we can support our mission outreach to our local community (and world), our wonderful worship and music ministry, our ministries of care and our education and programs for children, youth, and adults. Would you consider an additional gift to assure the good work of our church? When doing this, be sure to consult with your tax advisor or lawyer to fully understand the recent changes in tax law. Give directly from an IRA A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ years old or older to make tax-free charitable distributions from IRAs. One of the key benefits of the direct charitable contribution from your IRA is that the distribution counts towards your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). You can contribute more than your RMD to charity as long as you do not exceed $100,000 in a calendar year. The gift can satisfy a pledge that you have made. Using your IRA distributions for charitable giving could save you more than taking a charitable deduction on a normal gift. That’s because these IRA distributions will not be included in income, thereby lowering your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). Additionally, a lower AGI could avoid certain AGI based phase outs, which limit or eliminate some kinds of tax deductions. Gifts of Appreciated Stock Make a bigger impact by directly donating long-term appreciated securities, including stock, bonds, and mutual funds. Compared with donating cash, or selling your appreciated securities and contributing the after-tax proceeds, you may be able to automatically increase your gift and your tax deduction.
When you donate stock to charity, you’ll generally take a tax deduction for the full fair market value. And because you are donating stock, your contribution and tax deduction may instantly increase because you would avoid capital gain tax. Generosity Campaign
Sunday, January 20 marked the kickoff or our campaign, “Just Imagine!� This is an annual event in most Presbyterian churches. In the coming days, you will be receiving in the mail, a letter and a pledge card asking for your financial support for the work of our church in the year 2019. This year, our goal is $1,300,000 and 300 pledge units. You will be hearing from some wonderful members of our church community in the coming weeks, culminating on February 17, Commitment Sunday. Grace Place Tour Our congregation is invited for a special tour of Grace Place Thursday, February 21 between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. If you haven’t toured Grace Place recently, join our group from FPCN along with other faith communities that support this organization. We are incredibly lucky to have this opportunity to host him as he speaks about World Vision’s efforts to provide all with reliable sources of clean water. Meals of Hope Packing Event Did you know there are people who are hungry right here in Collier County? Did you also know we can help in a fun, rewarding, easy, interactive way to help provide those in need? Bring your neighbors, friends, family, co-workers, and fellow church members to join together on the morning of Saturday, March 2. We will measure, weigh, seal and label nutritional meals for those in need. The ideal packing event includes 100 enthusiastic, caring volunteers, and we encourage you to be one of them! Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. and the fun continues until late morning. This is an event appropriate for ages 10 to 100! Many of the steps can be accomplished while sitting. This packing event is funded by the generous donations from those who worshipped together at First Presbyterian Church Christmas Eve 2018. Mision Peniel Work Day We are looking for 16 volunteers to help with a workday at Mision Peniel in Immokalee on Friday, March 8. Join us as we get hot meals, groceries, clothing and household items ready, and then interact with the farmworkers and their families as we help distribute all that has been prepared. The One Way Conversation The Art of Communicating with Someone Who Has Lost Their Words by Julie Clarke
t a certain stage of progression (usually later/ A middle stages), a person with Alzheimer's disease may lose interest and ability in speaking or using language. Sentences can come out as confusing word salads and mixed up thoughts. For some, no words seem to come out at all. Conversations may seem futile for both the person with dementia and for those of us on the outside. Life can become very lonely and isolating for people with dementia, because the world slowly stops talking to them. The person with Alzheimer's cannot uphold their end of the conversation anymore. In this awkward state, we give up the effort to converse and we unintentionally shut out the memory-impaired person.
When the brain endures changes
due to Alzheimer's disease, strokes or other illness, the language ability is often seriously impaired. When the language loss seems permanent, you need a new plan. You need a way to continue relating together and to continue communicating in meaningful ways. It is time to become artful with your one-way conversation skills!
It's easy to feel nervous
when you cannot have a "normal" two-way conversation that makes sense. We may feel uncomfortable and awkward when we don't know what to say, what to ask, or how to talk to a seriously memory-impaired person. We may ask, 'What's the point, if they can't talk back to me? Do they even understand what I am saying?"
People with dementia continue to relate to the world even without words. Most crave the company of people and
conversation, even if they cannot participate very well. They often understand much of what you are saying or at least pieces. And even if they don't understand, people want to be included in the lives of others. They do not want to be abandoned because of their inabilities or illnesses.
Keep talking! Become a good storyteller. Tell the daily stories and
happenings of your routine life. People need to relate with others about the good, bad, challenging, funny, beautiful, philosophical and perplexing things in life. Reminisce out loud about
your own memories or theirs. Now is your time to hog the conversation and have an interested, loyal ear listening to your every word.
When you tell someone your stories or
the details of your life, the person who is listening feels important. They feel as if they still matter to others. It does require more interest, effort and creativity on your part to keep conversations happening. The switch is that now the conversation will feel one sided. Just consider it a time to let the person with memory loss get to know YOU. After years of politely sharing conversation time courteously not interrupting and not dominating discussions, this is your chance. Feel free to do all the talking, to help fill in the gaps of life. Enjoy yourself and remember to laugh at things. Don't silently walk by a person who has lost their words, stop and say hello or share a story with them! Just relax and try it out. The more you do this, the more you get it! Often you will see your connection confirmed by a wide smile, a raised eyebrow, a laugh or some facial expression. Deadlines:
As I sat in our staff meeting this morning, I was reminded that my article for the Outreach was due today. Wow, the January 15 sure snuck up on me. And unfortunately, it does that quite often. As do other deadlines: staff evaluations for the Preschool staff, parent newsletters, among others.
While I get everything done, it may not be in by the deadline. But you know something that doesn’t work on deadlines? Our students. Being a part of the Preschool, and a member of the Early Childhood community, makes you realize that each child develops at his/her own rate and deadlines for student needs. Our staff has worked tireless hours learning are nothing if not inappropriate. and years dedicating themselves to teaching. We are so lucky to have such an awesome team. Children do not learn to walk just because they are 12 months old. founder, Dr. Susan Wilson, a Scottish general practitioner, will join us on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 2 p.m. This event is sponsored by Sew and Sews, a group within Presbyterian Women, who has made dresses and sanitary kits for girls in Tanzania. Dr. Wilson will explain how the girls in this area would not be able to attend school without these gifts. Such a small effort bringing so much good in the world. It is a fascinating story, it will touch your heart, and it will be a great learning experience for all of us. The word “Tumaini” is Swahili for HOPE. That is what this group brings to the widows and orphans in Kagera, NW Tanzania, a place devastated by the AIDS crisis. Dr. Wilson will speak with us on the accomplishments of past years in supporting tens of thousands in this area. Highlights will include pictures of recently completed wells, houses, Sewing for Hope dresses and more. She will provide updates on orphan education, vocational training and future goals.
Our Sew and Sews will have on display some of the dresses they have made to support this very worthwhile project in conjunction with Liz Wilson and a very dedicated group of ladies from Trinity By The Cove Church, also in support of this mission.
We welcome all members and visitors of our congregation to join us, to hear this good work--Our Hands, God’s Work--that is being done and to meet Dr. Wilson who gives of her time and heart to help the people of Tanzania. There will be a slide show and refreshments. No reservation is required. Please come and hear. This is a mission project of our church that you are not going to want to miss. Presbyterian Women The February Gathering will be held in Spencer Hall at 12 noon Wednesday, February 6. Our speaker will be Fred Garner, a 47 year Naples resident, church member, and retired lawyer.
Prayer Shawl Group m eets every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Youth Room. Completed and blessed prayer shawls have been a meaningful gift to members and friends of our congregation in times of illness, death, and loneliness.
Fred practiced as a Florida Bar board certified wills, trusts, and estate attorney. He represented Naples clients and families, many substantial, in estate planning and estate administration matters.
