From the Pastor, Rev. Craig Goodrich “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains tremble with its tumult.” (Psalm 46:1-3). These affirming words of the Psalmist come to mind as we look back on the year 2020 which was marked by the overwhelming fact of the global pandemic and the Coronavirus, COVID-19. In 2020 we witnessed great suffering, yes, even within our congregation. Our lives changed with quarantines, travel and family plans disrupted, masks and social distancing. And yet, through it all we have worshipped, loved, grown and served. And we have Zoomed. It was a year of disorientation and yet also resilience, perseverance and hope. God is our refuge and strength. When the first wave of the pandemic hit in March, after two months of “normalcy” in January and February, in which we had wonderful programs and a preaching weekend that featured our friend, Rev. Dr. John Buchanan, pastor emeritus of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, we suspended all in person activities. We transitioned quickly to virtual meetings and worship. Our worship team recorded a full service on Saturdays which was then posted on our website and sent to all of you by e-mail. This continued through the end of the year. Many thanks to Brice Gerlach, Rex Childs, Nancy Van Fleet, Michele Byrd, our wonderful soloists, and Colin Gerlach on the cameras. Your dedicated staff worked from home from March to mid-June and all church meetings went to Zoom, which in some ways kept us better connected. Special thanks to Kathleen Law who made it all happen. Throughout 2020 your Deacons and Stephen Ministers reached out to everyone and provided much needed contacts and care. Your elders met as the Session for special meetings and were informed and guided by the Reopening Task Force, chaired by Elder Tom Morr and comprised of Jill Crawford, Shirley Hagerson, Jim Kier, Deborah Meeson-Vige, and Barb Weiss with staff members Sharman Pfaus and Craig Goodrich. The Task Force, with advice from our friends at the Naples Community Hospital, evaluated data concerning the virus and made recommendations to the Session.
On September 20, we returned to live in-person worship with appropriate safety protocols. By far throughout 2020, most of our members and friends continued to worship online. Thanks to all of you, 2020 was a surprisingly strong year financially for the church. Your generosity and concern not only supported all ministry operations and mission, but resulted in your giving over $100,000 to the Coronavirus Emergency Relief Fund. Thank you. Dear Friends, Thank you for the difference you have made! We are tremendously grateful for your faithful support, and pleased that you have chosen to make the First Presbyterian Church of Naples a part of your life of discipleship and generous giving. In spite of the pandemic impacting our church operations for nearly a full year, FPC’s finances remained strong primarily due to your generosity, good cost control measures, and cash management. As we look back on 2020, we’d like to pause for a moment to appreciate some of the high points of this challenging year. December 31, 2020 year-end summary • 2020 net income $60,947 vs. 2019 net income $20,224 • Offerings were up 13% from the prior year which was able to offset reduced preschool. income and reduced Unrestricted Endowment transfers typically needed to help cover operating expenses. • Expenses were held to 2019 levels and were slightly down (2) % from the prior year; expenses were (14) % underbudget in 2020. • Preschool – although income was down (21) % from last year as a result of following COVID19 CDC recommendations for reduced class sizes, expenses were also down because of savings from an unfilled teaching position and other expense reductions; 2020 net loss was $(34,426). Under normal circumstances, the preschool has been net income positive in recent years. Endowment value $7.3M as of December 31, 2020 vs. December 31, 2019 $6.5M • $810k year-over-year increase in value. • Increase due to unrealized gains from overall stock market gains, realized gains from securities sales, and donations, the sum total of which exceeded decreases of transfers out to operating and capital funds, and management fees. • Less dependency on Endowment for operating expenses and capital expenditures Total Budgeted Unrestricted Endowment transfers to both the operating & capital funds was limited to $153,052 or 2.5% of the Unrestricted Endowment balance measured at 01/01/2020. Operating fund transfer was $125,000 rather than the full budgeted amount of $250,000. Capital fund transfer was $28,052 rather than the full budgeted amount of $136,425; capital spending was halted in March due to COVID-19 related cost control and cash management measures, except for essential items; pew seat cushion amounts spent pre-pandemic were not funded as the expectation will be to fund through a 2021 Pews & Playground mini-campaign. Other 2020 highlights • Successful Annual Audit/Review (Review for 2019); “clean report.” • At a recommendation from the Finance Committee, Session voted to not participate in the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan program. • All employees remained employed and were paid full wages throughout the pandemic, and a modest Christmas bonus at year-end. • Exceptional giving response to Coronavirus Emergency Relief Fund (CERF), $112,565 collected and $74,000 disbursed; remainder to be disbursed in 2021. • Total Missions disbursements were $317,176 (includes CERF giving and support to Peace River Presbytery). • 2021 Budget approved by Session. Looking forward to 2021, we are energized by the spirit of our extraordinary church community and look forward to the opportunities ahead. The Personnel Committee provides for the administration of the program of the church, including employment of non-ordained staff. Members included: Chair Barbara Weiss, Norman Brown, Janie Casassa, Fran Engelhardt, Nick Linn, Hansen Long, Linda Pratt and Chuck Work • • • • • •

The Personnel Committee worked on Pandemic/Epidemic policies and procedures which guided the Session in its decision-making to have staff work from home for three months during the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The committee reviewed all performance appraisals, noting that we have an exceptionally talented, gifted and dedicated staff. During the course of the year, the committee gave a sad farewell to three long term and treasured committee members: Linda Pratt, Hansen Long and Janie Cassasa. The church accepted the resignation of administrative assistant Maria Huffman in the Fall of 2020. The committee recommended a 3% salary increase for all staff, which Session approved. In recognition of the difficult and stressful nine (9) months of working through the COVID-19 pandemic, each staff member was given a small Christmas bonus to indicate our deep appreciation for their stamina, tenacity and love of this church even during the most difficult of times. Dr. Brice Gerlach’s sabbatical was deferred to a later time due to COVID-19. The Staff implemented a Staff Covenant. Established with the Reopening Task Force, guidelines and protocols for the staff returning to work following a quarantine period of 3 months. Boxed lunches were provided as a celebration for their return. Rev. Craig Goodrich celebrated his five year anniversary of employment and Sharman Pfaus, Executive Office Manager, celebrated her ten year anniversary.

In February, Rev. Dr. John Buchanan was our guest preacher and presented The Peter R. Sonderby Lecture “A Conversation with John Buchanan...Hold to the Good”. The church closed its doors due to COVID-19 in March. Services were recorded and posted on the website with an e-mail link being sent to members and friends each Sunday morning. Staff members worked remotely from home. Virtual communion was offered on communion Sundays. Preparations were made for live-streaming the worship services. A drive-thru event was held for members to say hello to the staff and received a “goodie” bag of devotions, cookies, tea bags, etc. In-person services resumed in September with protocols set in place for social distancing, mask wearing and singing done only by the soloists. The Kirkin’ of the Tartan Sunday was downsized to allow for social distancing. Christmas Eve services were held virtually. Introduced ‘Faith Stories’ in worship on a trial basis. The worship team has worked extra hours recording service on Saturdays and offering live service on Sunday. Dr. Brice Gerlach recorded several organ concerts, including a joint patriotic concert with Moorings Presbyterian Church and Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church. Brice had to cancel his sabbatical due to the pandemic. He will look at future dates when the pandemic is passed. Rev. Craig Goodrich was recognized in October for his 5 years of service at FPCN. Zoom meetings were held on a monthly basis.

All participatory mission activity effectively shut down as of March, 2020. however... • Thirty-two FPCers rang bells for the Salvation Army Christmas offering. • 100 "Joy Bags" for the children in Immokalee were packed and distributed. • Meals of Hope saw 100 participants. • The Annual Mission Fair hosted 12 mission partners in Spencer Hall. • The Corona Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) raised over $112,000 for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Salvation Army, Mision Peniel, Meals of Hope, Saint Matthew's House, Grace Place and the Shelter for Abused Women and Children. A matching grant was realized through a member of the congregation. • New Team members are Yancey Brame and Gay Stover. • $26,000 was allocated to International Mission and $39,000 to Local Mission. There was a 15% increase in total budget approved for calendar year 2021.

Reviewed scope of Committee, established mission statement, adapted to Zoom. The Mission of the Membership Committee is to build the church family of First Presbyterian Church of Naples, and to devise ways to spread the gospel of Christ. Identified multiple potential outreach projects in an Ideas Workbook. Moved from in-person visitor conversations in Spencer Hall following church services to weekly phone call contacts on behalf of the Pastors and Session. With the assistance of the original “Deacon Church Tour Guides”, the committee members submitted a plan to the Communications Director of FPCN for a virtual church tour (available 2021); this on-line tour will supplement any post-pandemic Deacon tours. Identified Invitational Speakers to encourage member-to-member introductions for both online and in-person worship attendees.
Presbyterian Women

Prior to the shut down due to COVID-19, we did have three wonderful gatherings with our beautifully prepared and presented luncheons followed by inspiring programs: January - “Naples Beach Homes” presented by authors, Robert and Carole Leher; February - “Frugal Fashion with a Purpose”, a delightful fashion show honoring The Shelter Options Shoppe (supporting The Shelter for Abused Women and Children); and, March - “A History Carved in Stone: Mt. Rushmore, Gift for a Nation” presented by our own Carolyn Mollers (past president of the Mt. Rushmore Memorial Society). In spite of the shortened year for gatherings, our mission contributions and monetary donations to local agencies met with success. Our organization donated more than $7,000 to missions this year.
We were able to have our Blanket Sunday in February which allowed us to donate blankets and monies to Mision Peniel. Prior to the shutdown, we were able to celebrate and participate in Presbyterian Women’s Sunday. We shared our baking talents at a special coffee hour along with a large colorful display of sewing and knitting projects that our women handcrafted and donated to local and world missions. The four PW Circle groups continued their monthly meetings and studies via Zoom. The Presbyterian Women’s outreach is to welcome all women from our church and from within the community to join us or participate in any of our programs. Respectfully submitted Carolyn Bennett

In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, 27 deacons strived to nurture the congregation with compassion by calling, sending cards and offering support from a distance. •
Meet your Deacon Sunday was held in February with four new members joining as a result of
attending. • The Deacons Brunch was cancelled due to the pandemic. • The deacons continued to stay in touch with their parishes during quarantine. They also contacted those who did not have e-mail addresses to participate in the Reopening survey. • The Deacons worked closely with the Reopening Task Force and Head Ushers in developing protocols for greeters when the church reopened for church services. • Tom Morr, Chair of the Reopening Task Force, visited on Zoom for several meetings to bring the deacons up-to-date on the reopening of the church. • When the church opened for worship, greeters were trained and scheduled to serve. • Donations to the Deacons Fund continued to support the three agencies that the deacons are partnered with: St. Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, and Help’s Outreach. • Easter and Christmas holiday remembrances were mailed to those who were homebound or who had lost a loved one throughout the year. The Board of Deacons meets monthly via Zoom to enjoy fellowship with each other, discuss the life of the church, and share ideas to connect more fully with our faith and church family. Once you are a deacon, you are a deacon for life ministering to others with compassion.
Congregational Care

This committee is composed of the elder for Congregational Care, the Stephen Minister leader, chair of the visitation team and the Deacon Moderator.
There are 13 active Stephen Ministers who assist members in need. The Care Visitation team has eight members who visit members of the church who are in care facilities and/or are homebound. We make phone calls and send cards of encouragement. We are here to help.
Communications

The year 2020 proved to be a very challenging year for church communications. In the beginning of 2020 we had nearly 800 individuals on our e-mail list and we sent out one weekly e-mail on Thursdays containing announcements for upcoming news and events. In March 2020 we began virtual-only worship, and services were taped on Saturday and sent via e-mail to our recipients on early Sunday morning. By the end of 2020 we were sending e-mails to 902 individuals, some as far away as England and Germany. During this time we taped “Words of Encouragement” by Rev. Craig Goodrich, Rev. Rex Childs and Nancy Van Fleet. These short videos were meant to encourage those at home to “hold fast and stay the course” to see us through the trying times. These were sent via e-mail and also posted on our website. In October 2020 we launched a new website, with an updated look which included user friendly menus, worship and concert videos, links to virtual classes and programs, staff bios and so much more. Our Facebook presence also increased in 2020. Beginning the year with nearly 500 followers, we ended the year with 604 followers. The worship service is posted each week on our Facebook page along with other information and when possible pictures of events. Advertising continues once weekly in the Naples Daily News. Other advertising venues include three local magazines, and earlier in 2020, the Artis-Naples Playbills.

Children and Youth Ministries 2020 started out with the hiring of two young adults to help with the programming – Audrey Gordon who assisted Ashley Hancock in the nursery and Jack Fogelman who assisted Nancy Van Fleet in Kidz Lab. This was an intentional effort based on “Growing Young,” from Fuller Seminary, to bring frameworks in our congregation that are conducive to helping our congregation grow young. In January, six significant adults and 19 youth joined us for our annual Rock the Universe Trip to Orlando to listen to Christian musicians at Universal Studios. In February, we began a confirmation journey with five youth at a confirmation retreat to Dayspring Episcopal Retreat Center joined by our mindfulness intern, Erica Flesher (who interned with us for five months). Dr. Steve Stohler, with The Blue Zones Project, talked to our confirmands about their God given purpose and before the lock down, we enjoyed walking with Jonathan Stalls for seven miles a day during spring break as he shared about pedestrian dignity and walking as a spiritual practice. As the church shut down, all programming was seamlessly transferred online along with extra youth group sessions to ease the stress of the current environment. On Sundays, our youth led an online worship which then transitioned into Funday School once the summer began. We had a virtual graduation milestone celebration for 17 of our graduates and we were joined by over 50 family members from around the country and members of our congregation. We offered our families a virtual Vacation Bible School and we had nine of our youth join us for a virtual Montreat week, ending with a candlelight ceremony. As the new school year began, we had a Back to School online blessing with Rev. Craig Goodrich and Rev. Rex Childs. Confirmation classes continued with their mentors as each confirmand introduced a different spiritual practice weekly. Then, in November, we had a virtual sending ceremony for all of the confirmands to mark this important step in their faith journey – taking responsibility for their faith. In the fall, FPC Family Faith @ Home was introduced – an intentional way to help equip parents as their children’s primary faith formers. Each month our families continued to get a themed package which we explored on the third Sunday of each month in the Kidz Lab time slot. Rev. Rex Childs joined us the first Sunday of each month to facilitate communion at home. We also introduced a new ministry this fall – for our young adults post high school. Christmas time was indeed different – we had our first ever Virtual Christmas Pageant, “Fear Not”, which was presented by our children, youth and parents and opened up to the congregation. This truly was an incredible intergenerational experience. Looking back at this unprecedented year, we were mindful of the invitations that presented themselves as we walked through the indefinite uncertainty. Opportunities such as intergenerational online experiences, the opportunity for extended family to join in from around the country for special milestones, and the opportunity to keep our young adults, who are away at school, connected to our congregation are just some of the gifts we have encountered. Adult Christian Education Held an engaging and well-attended Wednesday night series focused on the environment including some wonderful guest speakers. Held a Lenten Wednesday night series that was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic Due to the pandemic, moved all programming online via Zoom, including Presbyterian Women (PW), Women of the Way (WOW), HUDDLE, Wednesday Morning Men: Faith and Fellowship Offered new opportunities via Zoom to stay connected including the Pastor’s Bible Study and Zoom with the Pastors One of the plus sides of moving programming online has meant that we’ve been able to stay better connected with those who are here seasonally – it’s been a real joy to check in with our members and friends from their northern home Rev. The Facilities Committee oversees the grounds, building, and equipment. Maintenance, cleaning, refurbishing, are essential to an attractive, functional, inviting house of worship. Members: Yancey Brame, Paul Casassa, Joan Gust, Jim Kier, Falconer Jones, Rev. Goodrich, Eduardo Martinez and Sandy Poore. Highlights of 2020: • Improvement to Sanctuary AC air return completed. • Five-year capital plan completed. • Roof inspection and life projection reviewed. • Worked with the Reopening Task Force to develop building usage and safety protocols during COVID19. • Reupholstery of pew seats and sanctuary choir chairs planned to be accomplished June 2020, limited sections at a time. Delayed due to COVID-19. • Christian Education offices, youth room and kitchen flooring delayed due to COVID-19. • Narthex design reviewed. • Signage reviewed. Jim Kier, Facilities Committee Chair

The Preschool closed on March 17 following the Collier County Public School directive after the development of COVID-19; the school remained closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. The Preschool Committee was formed as a means to support the development and operation of the Preschool and continued to meet over Zoom through the end of the year. Preschool staff continued to meet with their students over Zoom calls between March and May in the absence of in-person learning. The Office of Early Learning suspended the requirement for providers to receive a Kindergarten Readiness Rate (children prepared by Voluntary Pre Kindergarten, or VPK, for Kindergarten). The Parent Committee awarded scholarships to two students for the 2020-2021 school year. The Preschool staff held a ‘drive through’ for each of the classes in June; families were invited to drive through to pick up items left at the school before the quarantine and to see the teachers. The Preschool hosted a VPK End of Year Celebration where families were invited to participate using a ‘drive in’ type method. The Preschool opened in August for in-person learning with smaller class sizes and new policies following the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control; a car line system was implemented for pick up and drop off, temperatures and health questionnaires completed daily for students and staff; more strict illness policy. The Preschool’s annual Christmas performance was held using Zoom. The Preschool hosted a ‘School Spirit’ fundraiser during which t-shirts, umbrellas, tumblers, etc. were available; each item contained the name of the school and/or the logo.
