ith the chill in the air, it’s definitely obvious that it’s winter in Washington Parish. But we hope that this quarter’s magazine will provide you with some entertaining stories and photos that will help warm up your heart in these cold months. First, you’ll learn about the “Truth in Nature” program. It’s designed to help provide mentors and father figures for young men who come from fatherless or single-family homes. There is a program in Bush and Franklinton, and the organizers hope to bring it to Bogalusa soon as well. The boys join in a variety of fun activities, including camping, hunting, fishing and community service — and also just enjoy the opportunity to spend

time with an older male role model. You’ll also discover the story of the U.S.S. Bogalusa, a vessel that was commissioned in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years. A local resident has even built a model of the ship. There is also a story about a former resident who has become a children’s author. But her books aren’t just designed to entertain, but also teach important lessons about serious subjects such as child abuse and bullying. Finally, there are six pages of photographs of recent events, all taken by the talented local shutterbug, Sharon Hartzog. Thanks for reading Washington Parish Living. ruth in Nature is a program that helps boys who are in fatherless or one-parent homes. The program has 14 chapters across the nation that cover seven states including Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Louisiana has three chapters, including Franklinton, Bush and Houma. Country Tynes runs the Franklinton chapter. Their goal is to establish a chapter in Bogalusa this year. Tynes was born and raised in Bogalusa and graduated from Bogalusa High School in 2010. Tynes, who lives in Sun, has been with the Franklinton Chapter since March of 2020, which was shortly after the Franklinton branch was established. Tynes spent six years at the Bush Chapter. “Because this is a Christian-based thing, it’s seeing these boys come to Christ,” Tynes said when asked about the most rewarding part. “Every program, we do a devotion to Christ and seeing these boys come to Christ is probably the most rewarding thing. The other thing is the amount these boys’ grades come up. These boys definitely increase in grades.”

Owned & Operated By Gail & Gary Freeman Monday - Saturday 9:30-5:30 The youngsters in the group participate in a number of fun activities, including rope swings over the water (LEFT) and archery competitions (ABOVE). The Franklinton chapter has 12 participants, and the boys range from seventh to 12th grade. There are nine mentors for the group.

The Franklinton Chapter has 12 kids from seventh to 12th grade. At 18 years old, they become volunteers in the program. There are nine mentors. Once a month, the group has an outing. The outings teach the children about Christ, how to be fathers and the outdoors. The outings are usually either campouts or they sleep in a bunk house and it lasts about 24 hours. They start at 6 p.m. the first day and usually cap things off at 6 p.m. the next day. The first night, they’ll do a devotion while the boys are focused and calmed down. Then they will eat lunch. They have a campfire time where they sit at a campfire and talk about things that are going well and struggles the kids are going through. After that night, they wake up the next morning and officially start their program. If it’s a squirrel hunt, they’ll learn how to clean the squirrels, how to process the meat and then they have lunch. During the day, they’ll usually skeet shoot or fish then wrap things up with a hunt. They also have a canoe trip to Okatoma Creek in Seminary, Miss. in July. The canoe trip involves all three Louisiana chapters and is a tradition. Christan Quave, who is a seventh grader at Lee Road Junior High School in Covington, has been in the Franklinton program since August.

“It’s helped me out pretty good because I don’t have to spend all my time at home and I get to do things I’ve never done,” Quave said. “It’s fun. It also helps out my grades.” Quave said the outings are enjoyable. “We get to do all kinds of things,” Quave said. “We’ve shot skeet, gone hunting and we’ve gone swimming at Five Lakes and we’ve gone canoeing.” Quave said his favorite part is doing the outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. They have “Man Time May,” where a mentor picks up a member once a week. Throughout the month, mentors will bring the boys to their 14 WINTER 2021-22

house and allow them to learn different daily maintenance jobs around the house like changing the oil. They will also go out and have fun. Tynes said this gives the mentor and the child a chance to bond. This is done all year round, but the group devotes more time in May. The group’s next two trips are Feb. 4-5 and March 18-19. The February trip will include a squirrel hunt. The March outing will be a serve day where they will serve the community of Franklinton. Last year on Serve Day, they did a car wash and they picked up trash on the Bogue Chitto River. any of you may not know this, but at one time the U.S. Navy had a policy of naming vessels after cities with American Indian names, such as “Bogalusa.” In fact, at one time, there was a U.S.S. Bogalusa. The Bogalusa was built in 1960 at Southern Shipbuilding Corporation out of Slidell, and put into service in 1961 at the Philadelphia Naval Yard. Its call letters were “YTB759.” According to a crew member now residing in Massachusetts, the YTB stands for “Yard Tug Boat.” These harbor craft provided critical support to warfighters, by assisting vessel docking/undocking, providing firefighting and salvage services, and providing personnel transfer platforms. Bogalusa City Council member Teddy Drummond (myself) had heard about the vessel when he was a youngster, but forgotten all about it until the Internet came along. After researching the U.S.S. Bogalusa, I was able to contact a living crew member, and through phone calls, text messages and emails, I was able to get photos, dimensions, locations and dates concerning the ship. Here are some facts about the U.S.S. Bogalusa:

A closer look at Seibert’s model. The number “YTB 759” stood for Yard Tug Boat, which defined the purpose of the vessel.

• Work began on the ship on May 10, 1960. • It was built in the state of Louisiana, at Southern Shipbuilding Corporation of Slidell. • It was placed into service on Feb. 24, 1961. • Its overall length was 109 feet. • Its extreme beam was 30 feet wide. • Its deadweight (capacity for cargo and passengers) was 98 tons. • Its draft (minimum depth before the bottom of the ship hits the surface of the water) was 14 feet. • Its armament included two .50-caliber machine guns. • It had a fuel capacity of 417 barrels of diesel fuel. • Its engine was a Fairbanks Morse diesel engine with 2,000 horsepower. • It had a seven-member crew. Enter Mrs. Theresa and Mr. Tommy Seibert, two of the city of Bogalusa’s finest residents. They came to Bogalusa after Katrina from Chalmette, and Mrs. Theresa is originally from Washington Parish. I can honestly say that Mr. Tommy is one of the most talented and hardest working men I’ve ever known. Armed with my facts, photos and dimensions, I approached Mr. Tommy about building a 32:1 scale model of the ship, to be placed 20 WINTER 2021-22

on public display so that generations of Bogalusans to come will be informed regarding this little-known fact about the Magic City. Mr. Tommy first displayed the model in a meeting of the Bogalusa Rotary Club last year. Richard P. Turner, U.S. Navy Retired, of Wayland, Mass., provided me with some additional information that he stated was from the Naval Vessel Register (NVR). That information is as follows: “The Bogalusa was assigned to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. It was painted haze grey with a black water line. Inside, it was painted white in the engine room and the deck was terracotta. The machinery was painted machinery grey. There were two Detroit Diesel 671 Engines — one was the ship’s generator and the other was a fire pump. The main engine was a 16-cylinder Fairbanks and Morse 2,000 horsepower, 1,800 shaft horsepower, single-rudder, single-propeller. Galley and living spaces included two headrooms complete with showers, two state rooms for the tug master and chief engineer — those were painted with a beach sand color — as well as the pilot house. Topside decks were painted dark deck grey and bits and deck machinery were black. Below deck crews’ berthing was painted white with green tile.” The U.S.S. Bogalusa remained in commission from Oct. 12, 1960, until Aug. 7, 1996 — a lifespan of 35.8 years.

Drummond displays a photo of the actual ship next to Seibert’s model. The model is 1/32th the scale of the ship, which had an overall length of 109 feet and held a seven-member crew.

isty Douglas-Jones, who used to live in Washington Parish, has begun a children’s book series. Douglas-Jones lives in Oklahoma, but spent most of her childhood and a fair amount of her adulthood in and around the Washington and St. Tammany Parish area. Most of her school age-years were spend attending schools in Franklinton. Her first book is “Teddy Looks for Something Special.” It can be found online at Goodreads.com, and is also available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Walmart and other online retailers. Douglas-Jones said that the book was nominated for the Mary-Ellen Wilson Award in 2019. The award is given annually by the Oklahoma Department of Health “to recognize an individual who has made significant contributions to the prevention of child abuse and strengthening families at a community level.” “It deals with children’s self-esteem, and other forthcoming books will tackle difficult issues that children face,” Douglas-Jones said. “As a survivor of child trafficking, I really want to write books that will help children feel empowered enough to seek help when others hurt them. That’s something I was not brave enough to do when I was a child.” Douglas-Jones said that she has several mentor figures who encouraged her to become an author. One of them is the late Beatrice Phelps, from Bogalusa. “She was an inspiration to me,” she said. “I know that she had many friends in Bogalusa and I’d like them to know what a truly inspiring thing she did for me.”

Douglas-Jones also thanks her teachers in Franklinton, for “pushing me to always do my best.” Douglas-Jones hopes to develop the book into an entire series, but those plans have been currently tabled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The next planned book is entitled “The Beagle and the Bullies,” which will be about bullying.
