hile not through the woods yet, the end of 2020 is near, and I, for one, am happy to see it go. Buh-bye. While there are plenty of lessons learned (and reaffirmed) like loving the ones you’re with, washing your hands, and that yes, you can cook when you try, I can’t wait for some good old-fashioned hugs around the neck. The ACCESS team and I are all about being a part of this community — not apart from this community — and it’s definitely taken its toll. Fist bumps and elbow brushes can go, and we look forward to cheerleading for and partnering with our local charities and businesses (not to mention our illustrious annual ACCESS bash). For now, we will take every opportunity to cherish the quiet time we’re getting with our families and make the best holiday memories possible, and naturally, we are taking our cues from several of the families featured in this issue. These long-standing tribes know all about the power of family and share their secrets about working and succeeding together. Also, if time often eludes you (as it does me), we’ve got great gift ideas that should more than help. Remember, shop local when you can and hug your loved ones a little tighter this year. We’ll see you in 2021! Happy holidays and enjoy!

All I Want for Christmas Is REST! The holiday season brings joy, merriment, a full social calendar — and oftentimes stress and a disruption in our normal sleep schedules. Dr. Neil Billeaud, an expert in sleep disorders and neurology at Alabama Medical Group (AMG), gives us tips on remaining well-rested during the excited chaos of the upcoming season.

and leads to weight gain as well as impaired sleep and can even increase the risk of sleep apnea,” Dr. Billeaud warns. “In addition to simple restraint, one thing I would suggest is trying not to eat too close to bedtime. It's best to allow at least four hours between the final food of the day and bedtime.” This is also true of alcohol consumption too close to bedtime, as it causes something called “sleep maintenance insomnia.” “In other words, you will fall asleep quickly, but you will wake up multiple times throughout the night with poorly consolidated sleep,” Dr. Billeaud explains. “The best answer is to limit alcohol to a reasonably moderate quantity and not have it right before bed.” And what about those gorgeous Christmas lights we love so much? Well, bad news: They might be affecting your sleep, too. “Bright light at night has a stimulating effect on the brain and suppresses melatonin production,” Dr. Billeaud says. “Christmas lights are great, but it's best to turn them off (or at least avoid them for a couple of hours before going to bed) so that the brain can have a chance to begin producing melatonin and optimizing the sleep cycle,” Dr. Billeaud suggests. So while you’re celebrating the season, remember to take time for yourself and prioritize your sleep and health. And if your insomnia persists after the New Year, give Dr. Billeaud a call, as it might be more serious than seasonal stress.

proper sleep schedule and sufficient rest each night is more imperative to overall health than one might think. Sleep is extremely important for the maintenance of the brain and cardiovascular system (and really the whole body). Lack of sleep has been associated with a large number of diseases across the entire spectrum of medical specialties. Though sleep disorders such as insomnia are prevalent throughout the year, the responsibilities associated with the holiday season (and the excessive indulgence) often lead to an increase in these problems. “The added stress during this time of year and sleep are definitely at odds with each other,” Dr. Billeaud says. “This year, expect that stress to be magnified by a factor of 10. Stress tends to onset insomnia, as we have a hard time winding down in the evenings because of our hectic schedules during the day.” This is why it is so important to not overload your social schedules. Don’t be afraid to say no to a few invites… your sleep and health will thank you! “Try to stick to the same bedtime if possible, and definitely the same wake time, as it is more important for maintenance of circadian rhythms,” Dr. Billeaud adds. In addition to stress, holiday indulgences such as sweets, rich foods, and alcohol also disrupt our sleep schedules. “Eating to excess, particularly sugary and starchy foods, tends to cause insulin resistance

f you’re looking for an experience rather than a rushed drive-by shopping trip, look no further. Pensacola’s Duh for Garden & Home offers more than unique gifts sure to impress all those on your list, boasting the ultimate holiday shopping experience as you check off each box. Dripping in extravagant holiday décor, time slips away as you wind through the various buildings, all sure to inspire your inner decorator for years to come. With items for foodies and children to home, fashion, and everything in between, Duh is nothing short of a superstore of well-curated items highlighting that coastal lifestyle we all crave. Well worth the trip, we suggest setting aside several hours to browse and enjoy lunch at Jo’s, the onsite café famous for its chicken salad and mimosas.

Upon arriving you’ll notice the Spanish-style tiled roof oasis flanked by sky-high cypress trees. Unique to this area, these Italian favorites survived the 2020 hurricane season — a huge relief to owners Quinn Stinson and Jim Rigsbee. With a rich holiday display starring a giant tree laden with extra greenery for a lush effect poised to greet patrons and perusers alike, you’ll enjoy the baskets loaded with unique ornaments ranging from glittery to natural and, of course, the ohso cheerful red and green classics. As you weave through the store, you’ll find decked-out sleighs, garlands, and even more trees themed with everything from oysters to acorns. Clearly, shopping the world over and bringing the best of the best to the coast is Duh’s specialty. Cruising through their well-edited women’s section, shoppers enjoy rows of coveted PJ Harlow pajamas, as well as classic cashmere sweaters (of which no one can have enough). Perhaps most impressive are the scents from Acqua di Colonia, a fragrance originally created in 1533 by Dominican friars for the Queen Caterina de’ Medici. Known as “The Queen’s Cologne,” Duh is the only area retailer to offer this time-tested line. With the ability to peruse their wide variety of products, you’re sure to find just the right one. Knowing how hard it can be to buy for men, their selection doesn’t disappoint. With a vast array of exclusives such as coastal classic slip-on loafers from Swims in cool color combinations, the Brax Feel Good pants, and the wrinkle-free, athletic fit shirts known as “the best damn dress shirts” by Mizzen + Main, you can’t go wrong. Also, their cookbooks and food items like the Paso almond brittle and sweet hots are nothing short of addictive — not to mention the spreads and jams. Naturally, they are the area’s sole carrier of Astier de Villatte, a widely sought-after one-of-a-kind Parisian ceramic brand of handcrafted dishes, platters, and more. And don’t get us started on the stationery and candles! Think everything from Italianmade Erbario Toscano to Nest favorites. The point is, whether you’re looking for inspiration, gifts, or a girl’s day out, Duh seamlessly showcases today’s way of living in a comfortable, relaxed style with an elegant presence, making it a trip you won’t regret. In fact, it will be the gift that keeps on giving.

The apple truly didn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to father-daughter duo Danny Lipford and Chelsea Lipford Wolf. Together, the pair host popular home renovation TV show “Today’s Homeowner” — an initially small, live cable show that has grown and expanded into various avenues of entertainment and production. With humble beginnings in Mobile, what started as a solo endeavor starring Danny alone has blossomed to include Chelsea as his co-host, proving families truly make the best teams. he success of the Tapia family can be traced back to the year 1976, when Mark Tapia opened his first business, Mobile Pulp & Paper Company, in a warehouse at Brookley Field. With the goal to recycle the wastepaper products produced by the paper mills throughout Mobile, Mark’s company was extremely successful and was eventually purchased by a national recycling company in 1989 (and is still in operation to this day). No longer running the business, Mark set off on a new business venture and started Mobile Appliance Company with the help of two partners in order to cater not only to the public, but also to the contractor tradesmen in the Mobile area. With a knowledgeable and dedicated staff, the business steadily grew over the years and relocated to its current location on Old Shell Road this past year, where Mark’s son, Hudson, currently serves as president. Adding to the family’s success, Mark is married to wife Augusta, a well-known Mobile-based interior designer with more than 40 years of experience in the industry. Augusta learned the value of hard work from her own father who started a successful wastepaper recycling company of his own. After graduating from college with a degree in interior design, Augusta knew finding a job in Mobile would be hard considering there were only four professional decorators in the area at the time — each one working independently and without employees. “In discussing my plight of such few job prospects with my father, he gave me advice that set my future career in motion,” Augusta recalls. “My father told me to pick the best decorator in town that I could learn the most from and offer to work for him or her for free.” Thanks to his advice, Augusta began working with Lucy Rawlins, who taught her more about interior design in 12 months than she ever learned from her books in college. “With her encouragement I started my own design business, working from my home with referrals from family and friends,” Augusta shares, noting that Augusta Tapia Interiors (first opened in 1973) is now celebrating its 48th year in business. Augusta and Mark eventually became parents to three children: Hays, Virginia, and Hudson, but Augusta continued her work between carpooling, homemaking, and managing decorating jobs. She opened drapery and upholstery shop Cotton Capers in 1979, and eventually opened Designer Collection in 1993 out of necessity. “The furniture market in Mobile in the 1990’s was limited,” Augusta shares. “I found it frustrating that 20 ACCESS Magazine / December 2020

says. Virginia is married to her wonderful husband Billy Bodan, and the two have one son, William. Having caught the entrepreneurial bug from his parents, Hays Tapia and wife Jamie opened Port City Industrial after realizing the area was in desperate need of a one-stop shop for warehouse equipment that could handle projects from start to finish. “What we thought was simply a side hustle was really a major niche market that no one in our area had tapped into,” Jamie says. “For years, Hays’s parents had been telling us that we needed to be in business for ourselves. Although we knew they were likely right, the leap of faith to do it was another thing.” After a lot of worry and stress over whether to do it, Hays and Jamie finally decided they had to try. “Turns out (like they usually are), our parents were right,” Jamie jokes. “The first year in business has been full of highs and lows,” Hays adds. “We are blessed with a rapidly expanding business and an amazing team of employees who are helping us daily to achieve our dreams. This is both thrilling and terrifying. We have grown quickly and that means we are constantly having to change and evolve and take greater risks, all while focusing on serving our customers and employees well,” Hays shares. When Jamie and Hays first opened the business, they both knew Jamie would be handling the finances so Hays could focus on sales — an area in which he truly shines. “We decided to set up the business with me as owner so that I could make all the financial and administrative decisions while Hays focused on buying and selling and servicing our customers,” Jamie explains. “On a day-to-day basis, I am the one working on financial management, marketing, and technology and business development. You’ll rarely find Hays in the office, as he is always with our customers or seeking out new ones,” Jamie shares. But one thing is for certain: both Jamie and Hays love working with each other, as their personalities truly compliment each other in various ways. “Hays is a dreamer and big idea guy, whereas I am more analytical and excel in keeping us organized and creating the back-end systems and processes to make his big ideas and dreams work,” Jamie shares. “We used to joke and say the sales department and accounting department do not mix (and certainly should not live together)! Though that’s partly true and definitely funny, I think our real secret sauce is that we are truly partners in all things, and our differences actually work in our favor as a helpmate to the other, pushing us forward,” Jamie says. Together, Hays and Jamie share 24 ACCESS Magazine / December 2020

three children: Martin, Augusta, and Sims, and hope their children eventually come to work for the family (though they are free to develop their own unique talents and ultimately find work that they love). Although the Tapias aren’t involved in the day-to-day operations of each other’s businesses, they can all agree that they are always there for each other to talk about their struggles and successes in the business world. “We often ask Hudson for his opinions and advice because we are able to confidentially discuss things with him,” Jamie shares. “He’s a little further down the road of managing a company than we are and has experienced many of the things we are going through already.” Of course, both Mark and Augusta are all their

children’s biggest cheerleaders. “When we have a great day, they are the first ones we tell, and when we have a major setback, we run to them for advice,” Hays adds. “I think Mom knows by now that when we walk into the back door of her building and go into her office and shut the door, we’re there because we need advice or there’s been a problem we want to hash out.” Hays also has a weekly lunch with Hudson and his dad where they discuss business and life in general. “We really would not be where we are now without the example, love, and support of our parents,” Hays shares. And seeing just how successful this family has been in all its endeavors, it’s obvious that the never-ending support of one’s family is truly the key to success.

Having initially opened more than 75 years ago in Greenwood, Miss., Malouf Furniture Co. has continually grown and expanded through the decades, now proudly serving the Bay Area, Foley, and Gulf Shores. Built on a foundation of excellence in service, Gardner and Courtney Malouf are proud to carry on their family’s legacy three generations in the making. wner of Malouf Furniture Co. Gardner Malouf fondly recalls his childhood spent running around his grandfather’s furniture store in Mississippi building forts from the massive boxes the furniture came in and sipping on ice cold Cokes he bought from the store’s old-school glass bottle soda machine with quarters from his grandfather. “I had a lot of fun there,” Gardner reminisces. “My grandfather and dad were always working, so if I wanted to hang out with them, I pretty much had to see them there,” he says. Innocent childhood fun eventually morphed into honest work as Gardner began helping out in the store delivering furniture and eventually building product at his family’s furniture and accessory manufacturing business. Though Gardner has always been proud of his family’s business, he wasn’t always sure it was in his future to take the reins one day. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Gardner began working on a MBA at Millsaps while his dad simultaneously began renovations on a burned building hoping to expand the Malouf furniture business in Foley. “I decided to take a break from my studies to help him get the business started, and the rest is history,” Gardner jokes. Originally around 15,000 sq. ft., Gardner and his father refurbished and expanded the building to 60,000 sq. ft., allowing them to offer a wider range of designs and price options than the original store in Mississippi. “With the way we designed it, we have a large selection of pretty much every category you can think of,” says Gardner. Building on what his grandfather started so many years ago, Malouf Furniture Co. today focuses on great design, quality furniture, and incredible service — something his grandfather instilled in him from an early age. “Our business has the same core beliefs that my grandfather had 75 years ago to always work hard to create the best customer experience possible and to value the people you work with like family,” Gardner says. “He taught me to

be honest and work hard every day.” With an entire staff passionate about design and helping customers achieve their design goals, Malouf Furniture Co. strives for every customer to have an amazing experience with firstclass service. A testament to their successes, Malouf has recently expanded their showroom, having broadened their rug and outdoor furniture departments and adding a custom bedding department. “We have also added a Malouf Mattress store that includes more than 50 different beds and a dedicated specialist to fit you for the best support for how you sleep,” Gardner says. “We also have our Malouf Outlet offering lower priced furniture for customers looking for more of a package but still wanting that designer’s touch.” But Gardner says it’s the family and staff’s overall passion that has driven Malouf’s 75 years of success. “We live and breathe design,” he says. “We love it. It’s not a side gig. We don’t treat it just like a business,” Gardner shares. “Growing up I was always proud of our family business. I still have people that come up to me today that bought furniture from my uncle, my dad, or my grandfather that tell me how they still love it. It means so much to carry on three generations of doing things the right way.” Extending the family business even more, Gardner’s wife, Courtney, found herself joining the furniture business after the birth of their first child. “I have always loved interiors and art,” she shares. “I would bring baby Gardner with me twice a week to the furniture store to visit Gardner. Our friends started asking me to help them decorate their homes and that became my new passion.” Just like her husband, Courtney grew up within the exciting walls of her own family’s businesses. “My grandmother, Mary Frances Jenkins, owned an antique store in Springhill called Pine Tree Antiques,” Courtney shares. “It was located on the corner of McGregor and Old Shell Road. I remember as a child going to visit her shop and admiring the pretty silver dishes and antique armoires. It was engrained in me at an early age to do something creative and in the art world,” she remembers. “Once we started a family, it was better timing for Gardner and me to work together.” Courtney first started handling the social media marketing for Malouf before evolving and focusing on decorating and home design edits, helping clients create wish lists to be completed within a few short months or years. Courtney has always been grateful to Gardner’s family for welcoming her into the business with open 28 ACCESS Magazine / December 2020

SWEET LIKE FAMILY... & Cake!

For more than 100 years, the Pollman family has been baking up sweet treats for the Bay Area at Pollman’s Bake Shop Inc. Passed down from generation to generation, Michelle Pollman is gearing up to take over the business from her parents, proving good taste truly does run in the family.

By Caroline Edmondson Photos Stevye Photography

ichelle Pollman’s great grandparents first opened Pollman’s Bake Shop 102 years ago in a small storefront in downtown Mobile with dreams of making the best bakery products Mobile had ever tasted, never imagining the success that would follow. Today, Pollman’s boasts three locations and has become a staple of Bay Area culture with a fanbase as broad as its menu. Half joking, Michelle shares that being born a Pollman means you’re simultaneously born into the bakery business, as just about every member has childhood memories of running around the bake shop as kids or manning the store once they were old enough to work, as well as serving as tried-and-true taste testers from as early as they were able to lick a spoon! This is especially true for both Michelle and her dad, Fred Pollman, who are the two current Pollmans on staff, along with Michelle’s mother, Rose, who is also involved in the business. Michelle shares that her father first took over the business in 1989. Having grown up in the shop and learning how to bake from his father, Fred always knew he would one day take over the business. The same can be said for Michelle, who will soon take over the main responsibilities of the shop once her parents retire. “I always knew after watching my family (who has been involved in this industry more than 100 years) that this was destined for me,” Michelle says. “I had the luxury of watching my family make people happy over a loaf of bread or their favorite cookie, so there was never a question in my mind.” One of Michelle’s earliest memories at the bakery was stealing tastes of buttercream icing as a kid while her parents weren’t looking — something she says her grandparents were well aware of, but lovingly let her get away with. “Growing up around Pollman’s has taught me how to become helpful while enjoying making other people happier with a simple cupcake and a smile,” she says.

And growing up in the shop around such talented bakers meant Michelle picked up her baking skills without even trying. “Baking was just something I naturally picked up on,” she shares. “I saw how therapeutic the love of baking could be by making people happy through desserts. My mom, dad, grandfather, and grandmother were the most influential predecessors I could have had while practicing recipes that have been in our family for so long,” Michelle says, adding that having the privilege to grow up with a mom who loved to bake and make others happy through it was absolutely beautiful. “Watching her brighten a family’s day with desserts while keeping a humble heart has shaped who I am as a person,”

Michelle shares. Thankfully, Michelle has been able to continue learning from her mother as they work alongside each other in the bakery every day — something she says is priceless. “I love working with my mom,” Michelle shares. “She inspires me to be a better person every single day. She keeps family values tied in with business values, which is one of the main reasons our business has remained a family tradition all this time,” Michelle says. Although both of her parents plan to eventually pass the whisk and retire, Michelle is thrilled to have the opportunity to carry on her family’s legacy in this next chapter. “We have come so far over the years,” Michelle says. “Hopefully, we can move forward with more opportunities to expand the business while keeping Pollman’s Bakery family owned.” Honored and humbled to be part of a tradition that continues to shape Mobile’s rich culture, Michelle is overwhelmed with appreciation for her family’s hard work over the generations, as well as the Bay Area’s support through the ages. “I feel so proud when I hear stories of customers that have been coming into Pollman’s since before I was born, and how the young adults we employ share very similar, lovely stories,” Michelle says. “Seeing our customers happy and smiling while building relationships is like nothing else. There is nothing I love more than to see a familiar face every week and greet them with a warm welcome.” Michelle has big dreams for the future of Pollman’s as she takes over (including a plan to open another shop across the Bay in Baldwin County) but intends to maintain the integrity of the original store no matter what. “We value our loyal customers and want to keep them coming back to the bakery for many years to come,” Michelle says. And though she doesn’t have any children yet, Michelle hopes that if they do come into her life one day, they’ll have interest in keeping the business going for another 100 years.

A New Look for the Holidays Did you know that about 82 percent of people say they prefer gift cards for the holidays to a traditional gift? But what about gift cards for cosmetic surgery and treatments? Well, they are a thing, and they’re more popular than you think. Rolex A leader in men’s and women’s luxury for more than a century, Rolex has become synonymous with class and elegance. Pioneering some of the most technologically complex timepieces, Rolex graces the wrists of millions of wearers around the world. Give the gift of luxury this Christmas — because they’re worth it. By Caroline Edmondson

AIR-KING

Sleek and elegant, the Air-King (which perpetuates the heritage of the classic Rolex Oyster), features a distinctive black dial and a 40 mm case constructed from Oystersteel. Paying homage to pioneers of aviation, the Air-King gives a nod to greats like Charles Douglas Barnard (who wore his Rolex on various record setting long-distance flights), and Owen Cathcard-Jones and Ken Waller (who made a return voyage from London to Melbourne in record time thanks to their Rolex Oyster serving as their on-board chronometer). Certified as a Superlative Chronometer, this Rolex has successfully undergone a series of tests to ensure the quality of every watch sold. The Air-King is waterproof to a depth of 100 meters thanks to its corrosion-resistant Oystersteel, and is also equipped with a shield which protects the watch against magnetic fields — another nod to aviation, as many pilots’ watches of the past sported this feature. This watch will make the perfect gift for the stylish man in your life.

GMT-MASTER II

Perhaps one of the most enticing features of this particular style is its ability to display two different time zones simultaneously, making it the perfect watch for any globetrotter. First introduced in 1955, the GMT-Master has undergone continual evolvement to increase technical performance including a new movement. When traversing through distant lands, travellers can set their watch to easily read both their local time and the reference time, due to the fact that the hour hand can be set independently of the other hands. This style is also waterproof to a depth of 100 meters and passes the Superlative Chronometer certification testing. Gift this watch to your favorite jetsetter.

SUBMARINER First introduced in 1953, the Submariner became the first divers’ watch waterproof up to 100 meters. Today, this watch has reached well beyond its aquatic beginnings and remains a popular style for many sports and activities — both wet and dry. Because this watch is often worn underwater, the dial is filled and coated with a luminescent material that emanates a long-lasting blue glow, thus making it entirely legible at great depths. If you have a boater or fisherman/woman in your life, this is for them.

OYSTER PERPETUAL

The direct descendent of the original Oyster which launched in 1926, the Oyster Perpetual is timelessly classic. This style combines the renowned Oyster case with a mechanical self-winding movement via the Perpetual rotor. The pure and elegant lines of this timepiece set it apart from any other watch on the market. Add this classic watch to your significant other’s collection.

Perfect for the woman in your life, the Oyster Perpetual is also available in a smaller 36 mm size, which still embodies everything of the classic Oyster Perpetual. Fitted with a domed bezel, this style displays lacquered dials in vivid colors like Candy Pink, Turquoise Blue, Yellow, and Coral Red — sheer perfection.

Only official Rolex retailers are allowed to sell and maintain a Rolex. They gaurantee the authenticity of each and every part of your Rolex (not to mention its reliability over time), helping you make the choice that will last a lifetime. To experience the Rolex difference, visit Pav & Broome Fine Jewelry, the Coast’s Official Rolex Jewler, in Gulfport, Miss.

Porsche

What could be more luxurious than the keys to a shiny new Porsche under the tree? Give the gift of that “new car” smell this holiday season! By Caroline Edmondson

HIS: TAYCAN TURBO

Sleek, sophisticated, and timeless, Porsche’s Taycan Turbo makes the perfect present for the sportscar-loving man in your life. Boasting the latest in drive technology, the Taycan’s two permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PSMs) launch the car from 0-60 mph in just 2.6 seconds, accelerating faster than the force of gravity in the first few yards (that’s faster than a skydiver in free fall). Ornamented with the most up-to-date technology, the Porsche Advanced Cockpit offers up to four displays, becoming your digital co-pilot. You can use your voice to control various aspects of your Taycan such as entering a destination in your navigation system, setting the temperature, or calling a friend… just say, “Hey Porsche.”

HERS: CAYENNE SUV

With its striking appearance, the Porsche Cayenne is recognizable to almost anyone. A leader in worldclass sportscars, this model gives an impressive performance wherever the road takes you. Thanks to the emphasized front wings, a hood with power domes, and characteristic three-part air intakes, the Cayenne is the epitome of beautiful workmanship. Available in five model variants (E-Hybrid, S, GTS, Turbo, and the Turbo S E-Hybrid), you’re sure to find the car that fits best with her wants. Porsche Mobile 1525 East Interstate 65 Service Rd. S. Focusing on quality of life is a trend with staying power. With ever-rising popularity, CBD is in the top five fastest growing industries in 2020. The reason? CBD — not pot — delivers results naturally with no negative side effects. Whether you or a loved one are suffering from a painful illness, anxiety, or restless nights, the gift of CBD might be the solution. By Hayley Hill

e all have that person in our life who we’re not quite sure what to get for the holidays. And let’s face it: 2020 has taken a toll on a lot of us. With most of us good on cozy socks and robes, this holiday season is the perfect time to give the gift of peace. Commonly mistaken for marijuana, CBD is in fact, not pot. In reality, it’s a natural remedy for many common problems and a great gift, especially for skeptics who wouldn’t spend money on something they don’t yet trust. Perhaps the most critical decision when considering CBD is where to get it, as not all products are created equally. Our friends at Simply CBD are the largest and most reliable providers of CBD in the Bay Area and rated No. 1 in Alabama. It’s also important to note that many people have not achieved their desired outcomes with other providers’ products, as they have either not been using the proper product or been given an improper dosage, making expert advice more than crucial. When used properly, CBD can be lifechanging. There are multiple considerations in choosing who is right for such a gift. Obviously, the first is to think about the recipient’s needs, as every person has his or her own unique story and

particular set of wellness needs. “While you may not know your recipient’s precise wellness goals, you’re likely to generally know some key information about the person,” says Chad Bartz, co-owner of Simply CBD. “Does he or she struggle with getting a good night’s sleep? Do they work out a lot and have difficulty with recovery afterwards? Are they often wishing they could feel calmer and more relaxed? Do they experience pain on a regular basis? Knowing these sorts of things can help point you toward products that might best help to address those particular needs,” Chad shares.

a drop of added makeup, which Mary Emily’s clients rave about. And while some are brow-blessed, at some point most women suffer brow loss due to over-plucking, age, and even stress. Most have never had that beautifully shaped full brow we all crave and don’t have time for all the fuss. Thankfully, now there are options. Mary Emily is all about customizing her formulas and techniques for clients who want a little more fullness and symmetry or need a total brow reconstruction.

or her photo shoot, Outliner Studio’s Mary Emily Davidson invited four clients to best showcase a variety of her work. From permanent lip blush to permanent eyebrows, all render a soft and oh-so-natural look. The studio was full of happy women singing her praises, and no one ever would have known these ladies had a stitch of permanent makeup. They walked in the door looking effortlessly beautiful, fresh, and naturally made up, like they somehow magically woke up this way. You

see, as an accomplished painter with a degree in fine arts, Mary Emily offers defined yet natural eyebrows, a lip blush so soft you’d think her clients were born with it, eyeliner nothing like grandma’s tattooed lids, and more. Interestingly, no eyebrows or lips were smudged or disappeared as they nibbled, sipped, and powdered their noses throughout the day — just a light and natural all-day glow. With her artistic skills, Mary Emily is referred by surgeons for those seeking a new career, as well as to those looking to advance their skill set and learn her highly renowned techniques at Outliner Studio. She uses specific numbing, micro-shading, mapping, and contouring techniques to visually increase the shape, color, and dimension for her plethora of services, and other artists are seeking her out regularly to learn more. It’s common knowledge that eyebrows frame the face. Their importance can’t be underestimated, as eyebrows have the power to completely change the look of the face and overshadow minor flaws such as small eyes or eyes that are too far apart. They can also make us look less tired and younger. A well-defined brow creates a clean, refined, polished look without

The point is, permanent makeup is a fantastic solution for a more “wake up made up” look, as she says. After all, who doesn’t want a little more color and definition in the lips or symmetry and fullness to the brows? “My treatments are very low maintenance and last anywhere from one to three years,” Mary Emily shares. “Once they begin to fade, a client can get touched up or just let the color fade and have it redone in the future.” Not a fan of bold, waxy looking brows, Mary Emily is all about

natural. “I use advanced techniques to enhance my clients’ best features and create a very natural look,” she shares. “I never want to change their look. I use a very gentle micro-shading technique to create soft, perfectly shaped brows which is customized for the particular client’s face. Avoiding flat-looking brows, my detailed application lends movement, depth, and dimension so that my services provide a lower maintenance routine for my clients. They always leave my studio happier and more confident than when they arrived,” she boasts. As for the lips, fillers are no longer our only solutions. Over time, a woman’s lip line and color can darken, become hypopigmented, or uneven. By adding the slightest amount of color or lip blush, Mary Emily can define, emphasize, or correct the color, giving the appearance of more volume in the lips. Her gentle micro-needling often helps with wrinkles around the mouth that occur with aging, too. The effects are instant with no recovery or downtime, and now one of Mary Emily’s most requested services. Permanent lip blush is all the rage and results in a fuller, more youthful pout that is maintenance-free outside of a biannual color boosting appointment. We relish the idea of not having to carry around lipstick anymore!

FELIX’S HURRIC ANE C O M E B AC K

It has been a wild hurricane season for the Bay Area and other areas of the South with both Hurricane Sally and Hurricane Zeta inflicting significant damages in their wakes — something local restaurant Felix’s Fish Camp is all too familiar with. But despite the damages their foundation endured, one thing remains the same: the continued strength and resilience of the Felix’s family.

W

hen Hurricane Zeta made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 2 with sustained winds of 110 mph, it left behind more than $3.21 billion in damages. Though the Bay Area didn’t receive as direct of a hit as it did with Hurricane Sally, some homes and properties still endured major devastation, including Felix’s Fish Camp. Like most businesses in Hurricane-prone locations, a plan of action in case of an impending storm is a must. Felix’s is no exception — especially being located on the Causeway, which is always

By Caroline Edmondson

susceptible to flooding. “We have a standing crisis plan that we review before hurricane season in order to ensure our management teams are prepared for all incoming storms,” says the restaurant’s proprietor (who prefers not to be named). Like most of Mobile, Felix’s didn’t expect the amount of damage they received from a storm making landfall two states over. “We experience numerous hurricanes on the Causeway and never know exactly how severe they will be,” Felix’s proprietor admits. “However, in this case, we were surprised at the amount of damage we suffered.” Thanks to an 8 ft. surge of water, Felix’s infrastructure received significant damage. In addition, the roof succumbed to the hurricane’s fierce winds and peeled back like a sardine can while the front plate glass windows blew out, exposing the ceiling and electrical to major damage, and ruining the carpet entirely. “We were shocked and saddened when we first saw the damage but knew that we were going to be able to recover with the help of our loyal construction vendors,” Felix’s proprietor says. For three grueling weeks, the Felix’s

crew was “all hands on deck” repairing the damage. In the meantime, the Felix’s family is grateful for the support the community and their loyal customers have shown during this time. “We have been encouraged by the faithful support of our team and our loyal guests,” Felix’s proprietor says. “We couldn’t be prouder of the way our team came together to rebuild.” With the help of their entire staff and dedicated construction vendors who arrived immediately after the storm, Felix’s underwent an impressive repair, renovation, and refreshment process. Joking about the positives of

the situation, Felix’s proprietor says: “We operate seven days a week and never have had a chance to renovate the infrastructure of Felix’s. This hurricane has given us the opportunity to completely restore and refresh the entire restaurant.” Thanks to all the hard work, Felix’s is back up and running. “Felix’s has been a popular and local favorite for so many Mobilians, and we hope to surpass their expectations,” Felix’s proprietor says.

TURNING LEMONS

I N T O L E MONA DE When COVID-19 temporarily shut down the event industry, the hospitality event team at SOHO Event Rentals made a quick pivot to keep their team employed. With the mindset of “turning lemons into lemonade,” they launched Decal Doodle, The Print Company, using their event branding experience to create branded decals for customers outside of the event industry.

I

f there’s one thing this crazy and unexpected year has taught us, it’s the ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. But with a company that focuses primarily on events and an international pandemic placing all large gatherings on hold, what do you do when everything you know comes to an abrupt halt? For the creative team at SOHO Event Rentals, you put on your thinking cap and do whatever you have to do to keep afloat — even if that means launching a brand new business that draws on your already established talents and experience. Right before the pandemic shut down much of the U.S. back in March, the

team at SOHO had been interested in purchasing a vinyl graphics printer to transition their event printing to in-house since designing and installing vinyl graphics on dance floors, chairs, bars, table tops, and tents are a large part of their event services. “After a lot of research, we ordered our Roland printer and it landed the week that the event industry shut down due to COVID-19,” recalls Mary Beth Massey, a designer for Decal Doodle. As timing would have it, their team quickly transitioned their focus from event rentals to keeping their team employed. “We wanted to turn this moment into an opportunity, so we began designing and printing

decals for customers outside of the event industry,” Mary Beth shares. “We continue to broaden our scope of work each day.” Landing on the name “Decal Doodle” based on its founders’ love of Golden Doodles, the team (consisting of Account Executives Amy Kohn and Annsley Machen, Designer Mary Beth Massey, and Production Manager Josh Kohn) drew on their background in hospitality to launch their business to success. “Our experience in providing a quality product and customer service helped set us apart from others in the industry,” Mary Beth says. “At SOHO we are always striving to push the boundaries in the event industry, and now we are bringing that mindset into the print industry.” Inspired by Eminem’s lyrics, “If you had one shot or opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment would you capture it or just let it slip?” the Decal Doodle team decided to capture it and haven’t looked back since. Decal Doodle focuses on the goal to print on anything. This includes t-shirts, branded masks (hello 2020!), decals, stickers, real estate signs, banners, and really anything custom the client desires. When a new client approaches the team for a custom print, account executives first meet with them to identify what the client wants to achieve with the project. Once the team has a clear understanding of the project, it is then handed over to Decal Doodle’s design team who develops design options for the client to choose from. Once the design is finalized and approved, it’s turned over to the production team who prints and then delivers or installs the custom piece. Some of Decal Doodle’s most notable clients thus far include The Grand Hotel, The Fairhope Store, MB Greene, The Fort Container Park, and Mobile Country Club, with their list growing sizably by the day. The Decal Doodle team is grateful for the new opportunity born out of such a difficult time for so many. “Honestly, we have learned so much during this pivot about the print industry,” Josh says. Annsley agrees. “Watching our team during this pivot come together and do whatever it takes to make it happen has been amazing,” Annsley says. “They have been open to learning this new industry and I’ve enjoyed watching our team grow.” The team at Decal Doodle says they continue to learn and improve with each new day, and hope to become a one-stop shop for businesses and consumers to express their vision through print.

etween Covid-19 and hurricanes, could 2020 have lasted any longer? December is the time to reflect and review. It is a new world, and it looks very different from last year. Personal and business lives are more blended than ever before, so it’s important to look at both areas as you ponder and plan for 2021.

In your family finances, should you make a charitable donation now, or wait until January? Have you spent all your money in your Flexible Spending Account (FSA), or is there a risk of losing the remaining balance? Is your will up to date? Does your medical care proxy reflect your current wishes? Does your homeowner’s policy have the proper amounts of coverage? In your business, should you purchase the new office equipment in December, or defer until the new year? Have you reviewed your employee handbook for telecommuting policies and for employees using their personal computers? Is your insurance policy covering your business interruption sufficiently? What about cybersecurity issues with remote access? There are endless considerations. Each family and business is unique. It’s helpful to have trusted advisors to help you navigate these issues. If you would like to discuss these issues or any issues your family or business may be facing, give us a call.

L

ooks like 2021 is going to be a real coming-out for women in positions of power! Before we arrive in the new year though, we have one more special holiday season to enjoy. If you’re running a bit behind, let me suggest letting your fingers do the walking online at a few Southern female-owned businesses (as well as some of my faves from a little further away). I must start with my fashion and food guru, Jewelry Designer Jennifer Fisher. She’s a native of L.A. ( the other one) and currently resides in New York but has a decidedly Southern aesthetic. I love her “family first” attitude and belief that food is the heart of the home. Her JF Seasoning Salts have helped me cook my way through the past nine months and I’ve gifted them to so many of my friends. The JF Spicy Salt is my goto, but her salt trio would be a much-loved gift. I’ve already graduated to buying the big bags of the stuff. While browsing her site, JenniferFisher.com, also check out her celebrity favorite hoop earrings. Your BFF would love a pair of her bestselling Samira hoops! (Can I be your BFF?)

A purveyor of stylish living, Southern Influencer Charlotte Kilborn Carey shares her cheat sheet for when she’s out of time and can’t make the local trek. From custom monograms to boozy add-ons, Charlotte’s tips for great gifts and the good life are spot on!

Savannah, Ga.’s Emily McCarthy’s Instagram shop and website, EmilyMcCarthy.com, is the mothership of exquisitely monogrammed items and another solid go-to. Her single letter swizzle sticks are a perfect addition to any holiday cocktail. On a recent trip, I was able to pop in and scoop up some goodies for my own holiday gifting. Fun fact about her store: in the personalization shoppe she can create couture monograms and family crests for you to use on everything from the fine China to the Weekend Waterford. You know how much we Southerners love a good monogram. Favorite Southern chef and “Today Show” regular Elizabeth Heiskell (a.k.a. “The Debutante Farmer”) not only has great entertaining cookbooks to gift this season, but I think her Bloody Mary Mix would be the perfect addition to your New Year’s Day bar. With or without the added spirits, it’s delicious and available for purchase at debutantefarmer.com. Launched in Austin, Texas in 2015, Katie Kime’s whimsical prints and destination toile pajamas just make me happy and are the only thing I want to lounge in for the rest of 2020. Her New Orleans and New York toile patterns are the perfect remembrances of girls trips past and future. Hot tip: she also sells the cutest wrapping paper. All are available at Katiekime.com. Honeycreeper Chocolate out of Birmingham offers “bean to bar” and craft chocolates from around the world. Perfect to enjoy in your fireside hot chocolate, they also sell gorgeous gourmet marshmallows and chocolate spoons. Get your sugar on at HoneyCreeperChocolate.com or hop in the car and head North. Not to leave the boys out, wife and husband-owned OliveandCocoa.com in Utah has a cheeky little gift for all the naughty ones in your life. Their “Bad Boy” candle is scented with sweet tobacco leaf and burns for 40 hours. Clearly, gifting is my love language. We are all so ready for this year to end but there is still so much to celebrate. For the rest of 2020, I intend to practice the ancient mantra, “It is in giving that we receive.” Cheers to all of us for a wonderful holiday season and a spectacular New Year. I will see your smiling faces on the Pink Carpet in 2021! XO
