New styles of Golden Goose arriving daily!
Conveniently located at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Ala., Lucca has become a staple for women’s fashion for locals and tourists alike. Owner (and fashionista) Lisa Kimbrough first got her start in the retail industry when her daughter worked for a boutique in high school. Inspired, Lisa (along with a childhood friend) started visiting Market and selling designer jewelry and accessories. “Our shows grew and we realized we had found a passion,” Lisa shares. “When my daughter went off to college, I found myself independent and opened my store in 2008. I wanted to pick clothing items that help make women feel empowered and bring out their inner beauty.” Having a store at a hit travel destination means Lisa’s customers come from all around the world — some as far away as London! But what each customer has in common is a love for fashion, style, and quality. Of her clients Lisa says, “A woman’s style is evident whether it’s a day at the beach or a night out on the town.”
Describing her store’s overall style as “beach chic,” Lucca devotes an entire section to swimwear year-round, but also carries a wide variety of well-known clothing brands such as Golden Goose, Veronica Beard, Ramy Brook, ALC, Alexis, L’agence, and many more! Describing her own personal style as "cutting edge with a realistic flair," Lisa says she draws her inspiration from actress Jennifer Anniston. “Fashion should not be about copying others, but about bringing out your unique personality,” she shares. “From cut-offs to glam, Jennifer Anniston still shines as herself.” And though owning and running a clothing store is much harder than it appears (one must be flexible, a savvy businessperson, and willing to put in long hours), Lisa says she loves what she does and says the best part of her job is helping her customers feel confident. “Oftentimes when they leave the store they rave about the experience and not just the clothing,” Lisa beams. And knowing her, we’re not surprised.

Tired of not getting eight hours of sleep every night? Counted hundreds of sheep to no avail? Well perhaps the cause of your insomnia and restless nights are due to an undiagnosed sleep disorder. Sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea are more common than most realize. In fact, roughly 50-79 million U.S. adults have some sort of sleep disorder. Designing Women To encounter Interior Designer Trini Cross, you’d never know the powerhouse that lies within. Small in stature, you might miss her if you blink. But, what she lacks in physical presence, she more than compensates for in talent and personality. Born in Texas and raised in Mobile, Trini has lived all over the Bay area and you’d be hard pressed to meet someone who hasn’t at least heard of her. s a modern design enthusiast and an accomplished interior designer, Trini loves everything white. White. White. White. We’re talking white walls, white floors, white accessories, and even her garden is comprised of — you guessed it — white flowers. True to her brand, she doesn’t wear color either. Her wardrobe direction for the cover shoot was white and black only. However, it’s important to note that Trini’s affection for white doesn’t mean that she doesn’t do color. As the founder and operator of Trini Bryant Interiors for 20 plus years she shares, “My style leans toward modern and I do love me some white! However, I’m very in tune with my clients and use color often,” Trini says. With top-notch clientele, her work includes both residential and commercial projects (such as doctor and lawyer offices). She works around the Bay Area and pings all over the

South to places like Highlands, N.C., Auburn, Ala., Ocean Springs, Miss., Augusta, Ga., and Watercolor, Fla., among others. Her newest adventure? “I’m loving dipping into patios and outdoor spaces,” she adds. “I have been blessed with some of the best clients any designer could want, and I am known for my ability to work with most anyone and any budget,” she shares. Getting her start by helping friends and family with their interiors, Trini has been designing as long as she can remember. “I was encouraged by my daughter, Jacque Holley, after she graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in interior design. She said, ‘Mom, you’re so talented and have great taste, and that cannot be taught.’ Her words of encouragement helped push me to where I am today,” Trini says. Not long ago, Trini took on an intense renovation to call home in the heart of Springhill. While mid-century modern may not be the design du jour in the Bay Area, for enthusiasts this home is everything. So, what is mid-century modern anyway? Think about TV hits such as “Mad Men” and “The Brady Bunch.” While experts claim it’s hard to define, it basically describes the architecture, furniture, and graphic design for the middle of the 20th century. Think 1933-1965. Homes designed by famed architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Rudolph M. 14 ACCESS Magazine / September 2020

Schindler, and Philip Johnson filled with well-designed furnishings from Knoll, Eames, Bertoia, Cherner, Miller, and Saarinen defined the looks that still have a cult following and have stood the test of time. As for the renovation, Trini shares, “Chris King, our realtor friend from Roberts Brothers in Mobile, called after having shown my husband, Mark Cross, and I many homes on the Eastern Shore and in Mobile stating he had a house we had to see. When I walked in the door I immediately said ‘I want it.’” But in her own words, “it was a hot mess,” with most everything brown, dirty, and outdated. “I saw its great bones and absolutely loved the wall of windows that run the entire length of the house, as well as the look of house from the outside looking in,” she shares. “It reminded me of a doll house where you could see into each room. I also loved the floating Brady Bunch-style stairs and the overall mid-century architecture of the home.” Upon purchasing the home, Trini set up a tight remodel schedule. “I recall we had 60 days to complete the home before my daughter and her family came for Thanksgiving,” she shares. “I was here every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. painting, cleaning, and overseeing all that was going on. Well, I made the deadline and promised my husband never again. Ha! And Thanksgiving was a hit — until the powder room toilet overflowed. I wish I had a video of me screaming as my grandchildren were throwing every towel they could find down to me.” Not thrilled to have a plumber digging up her fresh landscaping to clean pipes on a holiday, Trini laughs that at least it’s a Thanksgiving the family will never forget. “I could not have done it without my sisters and husband who had to put up with my crazy OCD self!” she confesses. Experience is clearly crucial when tackling such a large-scale project. And it is this expertise she brings to each job she’s hired to do. “I know from experience that working with a designer can not only help a client with a world of overwhelming choices offered only to the trade but can also save them from making costly mistakes,” she shares. Whether it be analysis, large-scale space planning, or a bathroom renovation, her firm is deeply committed to client relationships and satisfaction (and if the client happens to need guidance in his or her approach to modern design, all the better). She also adores working with clients that have beautiful taste, as that makes the job that much more enjoyable. And, as Trini insists, no one should fear white. “There are practical and functional solutions for all,” she says. “You just have to trust a designer with the right knowledge.” In her new impeccably designed and decorated home that has plenty of room for grandchildren, offices for the design firm, lush gardens, and a picturesque courtyard, Trini is finally home. “We love our home, but mostly being here in the heart of Springhill where we have met and love so many of our neighbors,” she shares. Cue Frank Sinatra and mix the martinis — it’s Trini’s time.

The Coast’s crème de la crème interior designer — Cindy Meador of Cindy Meador Interiors in Orange Beach — has done it again. The queen of the clean coastal look waved her wand and turned this home into a magazine-worthy dreamhouse, and we’re truly in love. By Caroline Edmondson // Photos Chris Luker by Luker Photography

he words “beach home” often evoke images of rooms bursting with color, stuffed with the ever-cliché sea creature statues, seashells, and, well, more seashells, often giving beach homes a bad rap. Enter the Coastal Modern Style. With white walls, floors reminiscent of our beloved sandy shores, brilliantly curated textures, and subtle pops of color, Cindy’s interpretation of beach style defines that clean and sophisticated coastal look. With a quick glance, the overall interior design of this modern masterpiece located in Alys Beach, Fla., is instantly soothing. However, seemingly simple, this home emanates high-contrast and took much talent and consideration to achieve such a luxurious yet relaxed vibe. Layered in deluxe custom textures from wood and dimensional tile to wallpaper and everything in-between, Cindy has truly outdone herself once again. “I loved the modern aspect of this home,” she shares. “It intrigued me because I love stark contrasts and I knew curating the right combinations of materials 18 ACCESS Magazine / September 2020

would be where we would find success.” Note the walnut fireplace hood made from one tree flanked on each side by concrete dimensional tiles and set on a white marble hearth — a work of art on its own. And, yes, there is a television… it drops down so as not to cover that gorgeous wood. And that kitchen! From the zebra wood and brass to the stone, we’re swooning. “Once I presented the kitchen cabinet finish and the terrazzo countertops, everything else easily told its own story,” Cindy says. “I love textiles, so the fabrics were also fun to pull together. The clients put no restraints on my ideas and that freedom of creativity was so empowering in order for me to really reveal something beyond their expectations,” she shares. Knowing a little color can go a long way, Cindy was thrilled to be able to use it at will. “Of course blues work well within any coastal design, but color is so personal and it’s my job to convey to the client how color can provoke the emotion they want to feel in their home,” Cindy shares. Thankfully, these clients (who had previously worked with Cindy 13 years ago) knew they wanted neutrals with a touch of orange and green. “These aren’t the first colors one might pair with a beach home, but I was inspired to translate their look into this beachside project,” Cindy says.
A few of the furniture pieces were kept from Cindy and the clients’ previous project. “These pieces were so fresh and new back then and continue to fit with the trends of the design industry today,” recalls Cindy. “The cocktail table is polished vellum and brass, and there are brass Brutalist bedside chests. Also, the credenza in the master bedroom is polished vellum too... gorgeous! Oh, and the handblown glass lamps on the dining credenza by Joe Cariati make me weak!” With pristine views overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and incredible outdoor living spaces, Cindy knew this home had to be equally breathtaking inside and more than met the challenge. For us, one thing is clear: achieving such success requires experience, talent, and knowledge, and Cindy’s the total package. The fact that she possesses all of the above in spades (and is one fun gal to be around) makes her a clear force in the interior design world, and boy, are we blown away.

Designing and constructing a home from the ground up can be filled with endless choices, especially when it comes to details many homeowners tend to overlook. Hiring the right builder that provides you with a team of highly trained industry experts such as an on-staff interior design team that specializes in interior and exterior home design can help make the process more enjoyable. Enter Truland Homes, who can make your home and interior design dreams come true. By Caroline Edmondson
M
any people believe interior design is as simple as picking out a couch or matching drapes to decorative pillows. In reality, it’s much more complicated than furnishing a home. Many interior designers receive a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or have years of experience under the leadership of a designer with such a degree, meaning they have put a lot of time into their craft. An interior designer will walk homeowners through the entire building process, helping them decide on concepts from flooring and cabinets to windows and other exterior finishes. Annie Gray, the Design Center Manager for Truland Homes, is one such designer. Annie, who received her bachelor’s degree in interior design from The University of Alabama in 2011, has always loved art but didn’t quite know how to turn her love into a career. It wasn’t until high school when her art teacher told 24 ACCESS Magazine / September 2020

Annie that she had majored in both art and graphic design. “She encouraged me to not be scared of a career that wasn’t traditional,” Annie shares. “When you think of South Alabama, interior design doesn’t always come to mind first, so I fought it for a while. I did one year of undergrad at a junior college before realizing I wasn’t doing the right thing. I made the decision to change my major and transfer to an accredited interior design school (there are only three in the state for a bachelor’s degree), and I’ve never regretted that decision,” she says. Married to Nicholas Gray (an architect for Watermark Architecture in Mobile), Annie and her husband share a son, Noah (6), and love to travel, usually planning several trips throughout the year. “My husband and I love to travel so much that we even purchased a camper for small trips close to home,” Annie shares. “The Gulf State Park is one of our favorite nearby places to stay, but we’ve decided we want to eventually make our way to every Alabama state park.” Invariably through their travels along the Gulf Coast, Annie often admired houses along their paths of similar styles — all done by a company soon to win her over professionally as well.

In 2015, Annie accepted a job with Truland Homes — one she was initially drawn to because of their beautiful work and their stellar reputation. Annie says ultimately, though, she accepted the job thanks to Truland’s phenomenal staff. “We have grown exponentially over the past five and a half years, but the one thing that has remained is how much everyone cares about each other and about what we do,” she shares. “We really are a family!” At Truland, Annie works alongside a team of two other on-staff designers to offer clients a one-stop shop for all things design. Offering a wide array of home plans and elevations to choose from and hundreds of ways to personalize each home, Truland has a home for every taste. Once a construction contract is signed, Annie meets with the client to review plans and begin selections for the home. Understanding and envisioning the client’s life and plan for the space has a tremendous affect on the design of the home. “If they have small children or pets, wear and tear are a factor in the finishes,” Annie explains. “If they intend on having a pool at some point in time, the appropriate flooring should also be taken into consideration.” Starting from the outside in and biggest to smallest detail, selections such as exterior paint are chosen first, followed by cabinets, countertops, and flooring. “I personally like to select and have clients select wall paint at the very end of the process,” Annie shares. “At that point, they are able to see all the parts and pieces of the home together and the color scheme has already been laid out. Seeing a project through down to the details of the interior door hardware can sometimes be a daunting task for a client, but with
the help of a professional, it all becomes part of the fun.” In many of their homes, Annie and her team effortlessly blend both the Craftsman and Farmhouse styles to create an inviting and calming oasis for future residents. Lending themselves to lighter, airy colors with more neutral finishes, these homes truly draw on the Farmhouse style of an overall relaxed color palette while still adding warm pops of color. “White subway tile is a classic go-to for most homes, but to give an updated spin on the classic look you can add a fun herringbone accent above the cooktop,” Annie says. “Many Truland Homes also offer a large bar area and fireplace wall with tall ceilings,” she adds. “Those are perfect places to add a fun accent of shiplap without going overboard in your home. You can still have fun when staying neutral!” Unfortunately, when it comes to decorating, many homeowners get too caught up in “trendy” pieces and designs, and often lose sight of what they actually love. This is why Annie suggests not focusing on one consecutive style of home, but instead picking and choosing favorites from various styles and molding them into one. “If you take the Farmhouse style for instance, so many people have preconceived ideas of how to accomplish it,” Annie explains. “Farmhouse doesn’t have to mean white everything with shiplap on every wall! It can simply mean that you take the elements of the Farmhouse style that you love and translate it in your own way.” This is evident in the modern Farmhouse style that has become so popular in recent years. “People should pick the key elements they love about a style
and use those rather than following a rulebook,” Annie says. Annie and the rest of the Truland Homes team continually build on their skills and education by attending various training events to learn about new products and keep up with the hottest ever-changing trends. Truland Homes’ showroom offers a selection of carefully curated products which, in turn, offers an unparalleled buying experience for its clients. “I have the privilege of working with an amazing team of designers who I know I can fully trust to give each client the attention and care they deserve,” Annie shares. “It’s really fun to see things come together knowing that our buyers will enjoy their experience.” Overall, though, your home is truly what you make it. The design of your home should cater to your own tastes and interests and create a space you love living in. Most likely this house will be your home for many years, so make sure you absolutely love it. And if you’re overwhelmed, the team at Truland Homes will be happy to guide you throughout the entire design process, because it’s simply what they love to do.

Designing Women Hailing from Germantown, Tenn., and Brandon, Fla., the Lambrecht family has not only built a home here in Mobile, but a community. When they embarked on their endeavor to build their forever home last spring, it was both a dream come true and an exciting new adventure. alking through the beautifully arched doors of the Lambrecht home, one cannot help but stop and notice the reclaimed wooden beams, distinctive furniture, and modish interior that makes the home so captivating. Location for the Lambrechts was key, as it had to fall within a reasonable distance both from their jobs and their boys’ schools. Lauren works as an OBGYN with the Azalea City Physicians for Women and Zac is the Coordinator of Spiritual Activities at St. Paul’s Episocpal School. While building, it was important to the couple to ensure their 7-year-old twins, James and Joshua, had plenty of room to run and play. “We made many decisions about the design of the house very intentionally knowing our boys would grow up here,” the couple shares. Also done with obvious intent, the home is built off of a golf course

— perfect for a family who enjoys capping off a summer evening by playing a few holes. Zac and Lauren credit their easy experience to their great team of builders: Ben Stewart and Tyler Whatley of Stewart and Whatley Builders. “The whole process was a real pleasure,” Zac shares, noting that the entire project was completed in less than a year. “They complement each other so well. We put our utmost faith in them and they never disappointed. You can expect any project to have a few issues, but they efficiently handled each problem we had, and we probably never even heard about most of them.” Zac says a few of the must-haves for their forever home included plenty of windows, lots of lighting, a plethora of storage, and plenty of parking. Their favorites? “Our whole home speaker system,” Zac says without hesitation. “We love cranking up the music while cooking, swimming, and watching the boys shake their booties,” he jokes. “We also love our golf cart garage, as it allows us to keep our cart loaded with clubs so we can shoot out and play a few holes and be back in 30 minutes.” Dogs have also always been a mainstay in the Lambrecht family, so special elements like built-in dog kennels and a dog wash station in the garage were also incorporated into the design. “Lauren loves relaxing after a long day at the hospital with baths in her gold soaker tub,” Zac shares. Of course, in true sibling fashion, the boys have differing opinions on what is their favorite part: James says he loves the pool, while Joshua prefers the bonus room.

In an effort to add homier accents and modern yet chic décor to their new home, the couple enlisted the help of Interior Decorator Caitlyn Waite. “We would bring her photos of our inspiration and Caitlyn always found a way to make it work,” Lauren shares. “Where we were lacking in a decision, Caitlyn would have the right solution,” she adds. The family describes the style of the home as “Spanish colonial with elements of archways, wood, and limited ornamentation.” No rookie in home design, Lauren was excited to dream big and watch it all come together. Although there was no hesitation in choosing her inspiration in each area of the home, she confesses, “I am a closeted design junkie. Our house is littered with design books and my guilty pleasure is skimming the Instagram pages of my favorite designers and artists. Ben and Tyler always laughed about how every element was already picked out before the build even began. Zac remembers one time Ben 40 ACCESS Magazine / September 2020
joking on how he never has to worry about me not knowing what I want,” Lauren laughs. In addition to its proximity to the golf course, the home also boasts plenty of outdoor space for hours of fun and entertainment. “We put a ton of thought into our outdoor spaces because we knew we would spend the majority of our time outside while eating and spending time with friends,” Lauren shares. “We have three covered patios extending across the width of the house, which is great for grilling, dining, watching a sunrise, or entertaining guests,” she adds. While in quarantine the family has kept the number of visitors limited, but they excitedly anticipate welcoming family and friends once it is safer to do so. “In the past we’ve hosted a large Halloween party for all our friends and look forward to doing that again,” Zac shares. “Lauren has more Halloween decorations than probably all other holidays combined, so our scary porcelain dolls and fuming
zombies are hoping to come out and play this year,” he jokes. Zac also enjoys hosting bible studies for the students at St. Paul’s or his golf team and looks forward to having them over. “Pretty much any excuse for Lauren to make a giant cheese board is a great opportunity to entertain,” Zac beams. Regardless, the family has truly enjoyed the time at home. “It has really felt like a place of rest and refuge for our family,” Zac shares. “This has been a really stressful time for Lauren at the hospital with trying to run a successful practice and caring for the needs of her patients during this difficult time,” he adds, giving a nod to the respite their beautiful home provides at the end of a long day. And though it took a little over a year, a huge amount of decision making, and plenty of close family time as the building process occurred, the Lambrecht family is now in their forever home, all thanks to the expertise and prowess of a few esteemed local builders and designers.

orn and raised near Elba, Alabama, but having spent nearly four decades among the hustle and bustle of New York City, Patricia (Pat) Hall is the perfect mixture between farm and city girl. Having worked for powerhouse companies such as Sports Illustrated, the National Football League, and NBA International, and having spent the last 15 years producing rock and rap concerts and Broadway events in Times Square for children’s hospitals, Pat purchased her home in 2005 and continued to split her time between Alabama and the Big Apple until a year and half ago. Fusing the North and the South, Pat describes the Creole Cottage’s interior style as “Old South meets the Hamptons.” Tucked in the shade of Spanish moss-laden live oaks, giant magnolias, and stories-high crape myrtles, the home features expansive wrought iron enclosed porches overlooking the Bay, perfect for taking in the gorgeous sunsets over the water. this front porch and the Old Back Porch that Pat says remain her favorite parts of the home. “The original porches were converted years ago into windowed rooms,” she shares. “The clapboard walls are painted white with plantation shutters, comfortable English chairs, and two long sofas perfect for binge-watching Netflix and football,” she says. Only the third owner of the home, Pat says she was drawn to the ‘authentic charm’ of an older home as opposed to buying new. “In an old cottage the improvisation never stops,” she jests, “which is why it appealed to me in the first place. As far as maintenance, it hasn’t been as painful as I thought it would be given the proximity to the Bay, though I do have to polish the silver more often,” she jokes. Sticking to a primarily cream and white color palette, pops of color (such as her coral pink living room) have been added in moments of art deco inspiration. Pat shares that she drew her décor and interior design inspiration from her many years of international travel, especially from Dukes Hotel in London, a boutique hotel tucked into the corner of St. James Place. While she is inspired by and
admires Southern designers like Stanley Ellis and Paige Schnell, she has for decades enlisted her favorite: Greg Riley of Yellow House Antiques & Interiors. “Like the ‘Gentleman from Moscow,’ I attach deeply personal meaning to the objects in my home,” Pat shares. “There is a story and happy memory for every piece of furniture and art that I have collected since college,” she says. “For more than 35 years Pat has also acquired pieces from Yellow House, which were purchased on our buying trips to England,” adds Greg Riley, co-owner of Yellow House, along with Jim Louden. “These pieces include a beautiful Bureau Bookcase, Regency table, fine art, and lamps which she used throughout her New York apartments and Hampton homes before shipping them back down here. My favorite piece is the beautiful 18th century Georgian mahogany sideboard that Pat uses in the entrance hall of the home,” Greg shares. In addition to her antiques, Pat favors George Smith bespoke upholstery from England. “I jokingly tell people that I bought a yummy George Smith sofa and a couple of club chairs instead of a new car,” Pat laughs. splendid antique and modern oil paintings, she most treasures a painting containing a Boll Weevil given to her by Nall. She also plans to add an original painting from friend B’Beth Weldon to her ever-growing collection. “Shout-out to an incredible world-class artist right here in Fairhope,” Pat exclaims. “B’Beth Weldon is a treasure.” As with any home, Pat has made her fair share of fond memories within its walls, though one stands out in particular: Charlotte Carey’s Moroccan-themed birthday costume party on the porch. “Moroccan décor, music, and food with guests in full-on costumes… it was surreal,” Pat recalls. “Sadly we were unable to locate a belly dancer on short notice. Nall did makeup on a few brave men and fashioned turbans out of scarves from my closet. It was a night to remember.” One of six sisters, Pat is a devoted aunt, great aunt, and godmother to 24 nieces and nephews and relishes her life on Mobile Bay surrounded by her family and close friends. In love with the South, she continually marvels at the regional farm-totable food, beauty, music, theater, and art the Bay Area has to offer, making Broadway seem a little less distant for this “Manhattan farm girl.” When she’s not with family, one can often find her at her favorite restaurant, R Bistro, or tucked away on her back porch enjoying the songs of the Bay and storytelling with friends — just as life intended.

With more than 50 years of construction experience in North Mobile County, Brett/Robinson stands as a seasoned pro of the building and designing arena, making the company the perfect pick for this year’s Parade of Homes showcase builder. By Bria Scott // Photos Jeff Nelson
T
his year’s Parade of Homes was vastly different from any that we have seen before, but even with clear challenges, Brett/Robinson’s Corporate Development Manager Sean Bryant shows us just how it all came to be. Building a new home in the middle of a pandemic is no easy feat, but Construction Superintendent Jared Johnson and Designer Claudette Bryant bravely took on the challenge and prepared to build the Showcase Home. “We were excited and honored to be selected,” Sean shares. “It’s an exciting opportunity to build the Showcase Home and represent our local Home Builders Association. We could never have imagined it would happen in the middle of a pandemic, but we were grateful we were able to show off all the incredible workmanship and materials from our talented subcontractors and suppliers,” Sean says. Much consideration went into determining the perfect location for the build, including what it would mean to build during a pandemic. “It has been a rollercoaster,” Sean admits. “The original Parade of Homes showcase was pushed back because of the pandemic, but ultimately we were able to have it using masks and guidelines that kept people distanced and directed people one way through the house,” Sean recalls. Both the builders and the HBA were excited about building in an up-and-coming neighborhood in Saraland, especially given its notoriety as a growing community and its proximity to quality area schools. But what makes this specific neighborhood truly stand out above the rest? It is one of the first smart neighborhood homes in Mobile County. “The Smart Neighborhood project is a program that Alabama Power created that combines technology and energy efficient practices to achieve an optimal energy score rating,” Sean shares.

Keeping the home in line with the Brett/Robinson style was extremely important as well. When building a home with Brett/Robinson, families automatically think quality. The company is proud of both their unique style and their ability to stand behind their work with confidence. “The founders of the company (Tillis Brett, Gene Brett, and Tommy Robinson) have built their legacy on building quality products and doing what is right for their customers,” Sean says. This year’s Showcase Home was no exception. When you arrive, you are instantly captivated by the Traditional French Country style with white brick and subtle accents of old Texas, making the house modern yet unique. The leading goal was to create a home that looked like it could have been there for 100 years. The amenities far exceed its century-old exterior aesthetic, however. An electric car charger, touchscreen security controls, induction cooktops, an Alexa-powered dishwasher, and motorized drapes are just a few of its modern perks. Sean admits his favorites include the master bath, custom master closet, and large back porch. The technology package isn’t too shabby, either. The fridge that connects to your Spotify account and allows you to see what’s inside via interior door cameras, the motorized shades throughout the home, iPhone controlled door locks and garage doors, and a Flo

water management system by Moen (which can automatically detect water leaks and shut off the water to the house if necessary) are just a few of the technology components that give this home that extra flair. The Brett/Robinson team is proud to not only build with the Parade of Homes this year, but to also show how a formidable team can make it happen even in the strangest of circumstances. Excited to turn the house over to a family, they hope that all its advanced technological upgrades and unique nooks and crannies will be utilized. “We wanted to make sure that no matter who walks through those doors, that they feel not just welcomed, but right at home, Sean shares.

THE ARTIST’S VIEW In a world of disposable home goods, the lost art of true art for some is, well, lost. Dazzled by the oh-so-affordable fun finds in big box stores, we love changing our home décor as fast as we change our minds. However, the purpose of personalized commissioned art is to enrich not only our homes, but the lives of generations to come. Local artist B’Beth Weldon tells us why. ecalling long art history study sessions from years ago, two words can sum it up: pure torture. However, all these years later, I literally leap across any room to shout, “That’s a Modigliani!” or “That’s a Rembrandt!” any chance I get. I also remember taking in a van Gogh at the Met with my brother who said, “I could do that.” Quick to scold him with, “Well, you didn’t,” I spun on my heel to flee his obvious art ignorance. What a difference time makes. I never could have guessed then how that basic knowledge would grow into full-blown art appreciation. Amazed by this area’s thriving art scene, I was thrilled to meet artist B’Beth Weldon. Her journey began at just 6 years old in Fairhope with adventure-filled days spent under the powerful masts of sailboats, exploring the Delta, riding horses from dawn to dusk, and reveling in vigorous polo matches under the Southern sun. Her mother, a painter, invited her to join her artist group to absorb, stretch, and grow as a painter in her own right while surrounded and encouraged by strong women. From this poetic foundation, B’Beth received degrees in business and the arts from Mount Vernon College (George Washington University) in Washington, D.C., and enjoyed positions at the Smithsonian and Capital Children’s Museum. Today, she is a globally recognized painter known for her abstracts, landscapes, and sport art. Her award-winning pieces can be found in galleries, private collections, and exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Asia, and in the permanent collection of the United States Sports Academy in Daphne. Discovering she’s responsible for the sophisticated polothemed paintings gracing the walls in the newly renovated Fairhope Inn, I was instantly smitten. She also created the masterpiece that greets locals at Fairhope’s Mitchell Cancer Institute Kilborn Clinic, as well as NYC’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. To put it bluntly, B’Beth is legit. Witnessing our housing market boom and decorating frenzy, I’m curious about the process of custom paintings. “I love having people visit my studio to view my work, as the colors, textures, and size get lost in translation in a photograph or on Instagram,” B’Beth shares. “And often they see something they want slightly different, which is how commissions happen!” she says. As for the specifics, B’Beth shares, “Listening to the client and discussing their preferred subject matter, we review mediums, size, and pricing. I like to see the space where the work will hang as it allows me to envision how it should feel and to find personal touches to incorporate that will complement the interior design,” she says.
With work around the world, B’Beth adds, “Many clients live abroad or in different states, so I communicate through video chats and include everyone from interior designers to contractors and craftsmen to ensure we’re on the same page. From there, we exchange paint chips, treatment ideas, fabric swatches, and images for inspiration,” she shares, noting she can jump in at any stage and is familiar with them all! Her vast interior design knowledge is another benefit. “Sometimes a large canvas actually makes a space feel larger and a well-placed gallery wall boasting a mix of photographs, drawings, and paintings is inviting,” B’Beth says. “I love when a space tells a story. Also, I find that small paintings in guest bathrooms, a kitchen nook, or over a side table create a beautiful space,” she shares. While some build the room around the art, others build the art around the room. “Choosing the furniture and fabrics first can make finding the perfect art difficult,” B’Beth says. “It’s popular (and cost effective) to have the art and furniture married from the start to achieve the homeowner’s or the interior designer’s desired effect. This teamwork approach is really fun and effective and results in pieces that last a lifetime.” Finding mass-produced pieces impersonal, B’Beth feels a commissioned piece allows for a different freedom. “You can love the work of an artist, but not quite find a subject in their current portfolio that resonates with your particular wants,” she shares. “A commissioned work can bring your dream to life. I once commissioned an artist to paint my daughter and I with
our favorite horses. It’s whimsical, unique, and ultimately an heirloom,” she recalls fondly. With her three panel triptychs in high demand, her art can be seen at Fairhope’s Camellia Café, Chapel Farm Collection, the Sophiella Gallery in Mobile, and on her website. “Breaking up one landscape or abstract over three panels offers that wow factor and keeps the eye more active,” B’Beth explains. “Starting with landscapes years ago, they’re still popular, but I’ve enjoyed breaking things up with my horse, fishing, hunting, and sailing scenes. I’m thrilled with the requests for my modern abstract and prismatic paintings — even the small ones framed in acrylic. My pen and inks are also big gift items as they’re affordable and portray a lot of masculine outdoorsy scenes,” she adds. Never having lost her childhood fascination with light, color, and movement, B’Beth’s ability to capture the essence of a moment transforms the space where it lives. Multidimensional, her work evokes emotion and invites viewers to dig deeper into their souls. Whether comprised of clean lines or heavy strokes, her paintings are simple and powerful, inviting the viewer to jump inside. With more time at home (and more time spent staring at our own four walls), now seems like the perfect time to add some interest to our homes and invest in an heirloom (or two) of our own.

A-LA Land Modern Vintage Co-Owner Jeff Butler says he’s always had a thing for interior design and furniture, joking that he’d been picking mid-century pieces out of trash piles for years before deciding it was time to open his own storefront with his wife, Abby. “The cliché stands true: if you’re doing something you love, it’s not really work,” Jeff shares. “We love this stuff — the history, the story. Our first year was tough, but we stuck it out and we’re so glad we did,” he says. Their store (located in what once upon a time stood as a beauty salon) is designed to remain authentic and simple, allowing for the furniture to do the talking. “They’re the storytellers, and we let them tell it,” Jeff says. Collecting pieces primarily from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, these pieces are all about clean lines, beautiful materials, and intriguing elements of design. “It’s interesting to note that many iconic pieces were actually designed in the early 1900s, yet didn’t see production until the 50s to present day,” Jeff shares. “There are incredible designs that were patented at the turn of the 20th century that still haven’t gone into production.” More recently, Jeff and Abby have begun bringing in pieces from the 70s and 80s appropriately dubbed “disco glam,” as they use decadent materials such as brass, glass, chrome, and mirrors. Jeff, who sources the pieces for the store, loves the

hunt and usually travels around the U.S. in search of pieces to ship back to the store, often introducing him to the most interesting resale shops and private sellers. “Pre-COVID, I was doing around 14 trips, zigzagging the country to buy,” he says. “Currently we are sourcing directly from collectors, other restoration folks, online buy/sell platforms, and general word of mouth. We’re always being aware and asking the question, ‘Is that for sale?’” Nearly every day Jeff runs across a piece where he can’t believe his luck, but the most incredible finds are those where a furniture piece is accompanied by its design drawing. “How cool is it to own an iconic piece of design history as well as the actual design drawing from the designer’s desk?” Jeff exclaims. Of course, vintage furniture often comes with its fair share of dents and scratches, which is why LA-LA Land restores almost every piece in-house before it hits the sales floor. “This makes us truly unique,” Jeff says. “We use traditional methods, materials, and techniques to keep things authentic. Our specialty is what we call ‘preservation restorations’ where we keep a bit of the beauty marks to let the piece tell its story.” And these stories are the most important aspect for Jeff and Abby. As one can imagine, owning a business with one’s spouse is a never-ending cycle of adventures, but both Jeff and Abby love what they do and work
flawlessly as a team — part of what makes their business such a success. “Abby is the reasonable one that keeps me grounded, as I tend to get carried away sometimes,” Jeff jokes. “It’s always great to have a voice of reason to keep me from buying a 12-foot stuffed polar bear for the shop! Running a demanding business like ours is a challenge when balancing family and work and she has the home component locked down tight,” Jeff dotes. “From managing our children to the daily responsibilities of maintaining our personal life, she’s the real MVP. All decisions are discussed together and oftentimes we also involve our 9-year-old daughter Stella for her input.” A true testament to the success of their ventures, Jeff and Abby have plans to open a second store in Spring Hill come October 2020. Specializing in everything from high-design customizable furnishings from Bespoke and beyond to the best gift selection around and to-die-for florals, LUSH Home•Garden•Event is anything but typical. Housing the latest lighting fixtures we didn’t even know we needed, traditional and mid-century modern accent pieces, a spot-on chair and bench selection, and even those hard-to-find outdoor space-defining elements, each item is a guaranteed conversation piece. And his cultivating doesn’t stop there. Not only has Tim created Coastal Candles (an individually scented custom candle line) highlighting each Bay area like Mobile, Fairhope, Point Clear, and even Gulf Shores, but this long-time candle expert has also produced a Mardi Gras king cake scent so good your friends and family will think you’re a professional baker. In his well-edited shop, guests can leisurely browse stacks of must-have coffee table books, purchase life changing skincare products from high-brow brands such as The Better Skin Co. and Archipelago Botanicals, as well as find those whimsical boxwood balls to top all those spaces calling for a little green. Further exploration leads you towards the back of this expansive space where you’ll find glorious orchids uniquely potted, towering one-of-a-kind perfectly worn shelving options, and so much more. It is here you’ll also find Susan George. Part of the big news and the celebration, Susan has stepped in as Tim’s partner in the floral and garden aspect of business. While Tim is a floral genius, this new partnership will free him up for his true love: interior design. Able to help clients outside of the store, he looks forward to not being pulled in so many directions. Acknowledging he needed a partner in order to do it all and deliver the quality he and his clients demand, he knows Susan is the perfect choice to lead the floral side of things. A LUSH fan herself, it wasn’t long before Susan’s and Tim’s friendly in-store chatter became a partnership. A lifelong Mobilian, Susan has a solid business background and a love of all things floral, thus making her the obvious choice for Tim. “I couldn’t be more excited and prouder to have Susan as my business partner,” he shares. “Hating to say no to anyone needing expert full-service floral services or a home interior design project, I’m so relieved to have her. She is incredibly talented and, although we’ll work together, I don’t have to turn anyone away due to my hectic schedule,” Tim shares.
With equal admiration, Susan adds, “I’m just so thrilled to align with Tim. We have the same high standards for going above and beyond for our clients and the same upscale aesthetic for florals overall. Also, the ability to focus solely on florals allows us to focus on bigger and better options such as flower walls and arched sculptures for weddings and events. And in addition to offering local businesses luxurious arrangements to enhance their spaces, I’m even incorporating a walk-in cooler stocked full of beautiful fresh blooms that floral enthusiasts can purchase by the stem,” Susan shares. She’s also expanding the on-site floral arranging parties. “With a table-lined room dedicated to host everything from girl’s night out to a business team building event, I can’t wait to share the fun with the community,” she says. And, if that’s not enough to celebrate, Tim’s 20 years as a business pioneer is beyond impressive. Starting in 2000 in Avondale (a Birmingham suburb) and long before retail giants, Tim had the vision for a store that
incorporated all things to inspire a life welllived. The first of its kind, Tim bought a condemned 1900’s historic building, endured an intense re-build, and opened the Parkside Home and Garden Shop. A huge success, Tim received high honors from the mayor for his vision, energy, and hard work, as well as the acknowledgement that his commitment resulted in the transformation of an entire district that’s still thriving today. As if that wasn’t enough, Tim went on to open a similar store in Vestavia Hills’ city center that boasted 10,000 square feet inside and 3,000 outside. With his addiction to renovating nearly condemned properties, Tim found a gem on Conti Street in Downtown Mobile. Known for seeing the potential in what others might consider a heap of rubble, Tim knew he had to rescue this building. One of the oldest in the city, the process was long and tedious, but shortly after opening Parkside, an investor made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. From there, he and his partner opened d.luxe in the
design district of Savannah, Ga. Bringing with him critical vendor relationships, impeccable taste, and immeasurable retail knowledge to teach, Tim fell for Mobile and was called back by a historic fixer-upper. Naturally, he found the perfect Midtown gem and opened LUSH Home•Garden•Event in 2016. We’re so glad he did, as shopping with Tim and his team is not only the opportunity to curate your best life, but a chance to experience Southern hospitality at its best. And just in case you’re wondering, Tim sold that historic home and is renovating a mid-century modern gem for his next act. Lastly, in the name of events, follow them on social for the in-store celebration coming soon. Cheers to the next 20 years, Tim and Susan!

HOME IMPROVEMENT When it comes to selling a home, it goes without saying every seller wants to make a nice profit. But listing your home “as is” might not be the best way to take advantage of the current Seller’s market. 1702 Real Estate Owner and Broker Melanie Bunting-Seymour understands the impact a quick renovation and home staging can make when it comes to attracting a potential buyer and putting the most money in your pocket. By Caroline Edmondson
I
n the midst of a global pandemic, the Real Estate market seems to be thriving more than ever before. With extremely low mortgage and interest rates and an influx of millennial homebuyers, 2020 has turned out to be one of the best years to invest in a home, and homes are being scooped off the market at record speeds. But what does this mean for someone looking to sell their home and take advantage of this booming market? According to Melanie, a well-prepped property is sure to pull in the most profit, and it all comes down to one word: vision. “Vision equals money,” she shares. “Ninety-five percent of your work should be in pre-listing. First impressions are everything, and web appeal is the new curb appeal. If we work hard before we list, we won’t have to work so hard later to keep it ‘show ready’ because we should go under contract quicker, most likely at our goal price,” she says. And though it seems daunting (and almost counterproductive) to invest in a home you’re going to ultimately sell, you’ll actually earn your money back plus some in the market, as today’s buyers are willing to pay higher prices for quality move-in ready homes.
So where do you start? Melanie believes one of the easiest updates is a fresh coat of paint, though she warns this can go very wrong, very quickly. “Gray is not always the answer,” she jokes. “Undertones play a huge role, and though it changes, the most popular color palette is currently white tones. Flat walls, satin trim in the same shade, and pops of color with art and furniture always sell!” Melanie also suggests focusing on updates to items such as light fixtures, faucets, and door/cabinet hardware in the kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. “These items don’t have to be expensive; they just have to have ‘the look,’” she says. “Stick with something timeless and not too flashy.” And of course, don’t ignore major repairs, as this can turn buyers off and decrease the value of your home. A quick pre-listing home inspection can help narrow down any issues that need attention. Once your renovations and updates are completed, it is time to stage your home for listing photos and showings. According to Melanie, this is a crucial step in the selling process and should not be overlooked. “One third of agents around the nation say staging increases a buyer’s offer from one to five percent,” she says. “Simply put, if you’re selling a $300k home, staging can help put an extra $3k to $30k in your pocket,” Melanie shares. Of course, hiring the best Agent is key. “Interview several and select one who can best serve you,” Melanie suggests. “Check their credentials and reviews, and make sure they have experience in your particular area and price point. Ask what they can offer you that other agents cannot and select from there.” For Melanie, her job is much more than just selling a home; it’s about making the process as easy as she can for her clients by using her years of renovation knowledge and home staging talent, connections, and going above and beyond for each client. Making those connections and building lasting relationships has been the key to her success. In just three years, she’s gone from selling $1 million a year to being in the top 25 agents in all of Mobile for sold volume, proving that when you really love your job, you excel in it.

TH E M I DTOW N REPORT Midtown Mobile, an area nestled between Downtown Mobile’s bustling city life and Spring Hill’s oak-lined streets, has been a consistent frontrunner on the real estate scene since 2016. But within the past year, the historic area has seen a dramatic boom in interested homebuyers. Sara Roberts, Director of Marketing for Roberts Brothers, Inc., shares why she believes Midtown is the way to go. By Caroline Edmondson
T
ake a drive through Midtown Mobile and you’re sure to be greeted by the quiet charm of this historic area. From well-preserved historical homes to Greek revival and some recent modern construction, each home offers its own unique character and tells its own enchanting story. Aside from its beautiful array of architecture, perhaps the most appealing aspect of Midtown is that quintessential down-home feel. “It is a very active community with couples walking after work, socializing on their front porches, and great street parties,” Sara shares. This sense of community is exactly what draws potential homebuyers to this particular area and makes it the perfect steppingstone to the younger generation looking for a home in which to start a family. Everyone knows, after all, that it’s all about “Location, location, location!” A short five-minute drive to local bars and restaurants downtown, Midtown is neighbor to some of Mobile’s best schools, is within close proximity to Publix and the Midtown Center, and offers quick access to I-10 and 1-65. Midtown truly seems to have it all, and buyers know this. But just like the lifestyle, Midtown real estate moves fast! “You need to be ready to make your best offer,” Sara cautions. “Everything moves quickly in Midtown, and we are constantly seeing multiple offers put in on one home.” But before jumping to throw an offer in the hat, Sara suggests potential homebuyers should be prequalified to determine a budget. Not only will this set realistic expectations, but it will also aid in narrowing the search.
Raising her own family in Midtown, Sara fully believes in the power of this community. “Midtown has been a great place to grow our family, and we wouldn’t change it for the world,” she shares. “It is such a fun part of town to go on walks, we’re close to tons of Mother’s Day Out programs, and there are lots of families around so that our kids always have a friend on our street,” she fondly shares. she fondly shares. And though one Midtown home doesn’t stick out above the rest given all of their unique quirks and character, Sara jokes that the Government Street homes are particularly easy on the eyes. All in all, though the world seems so crazy, now is the perfect time to invest in your future home. “The real estate market has been on fire during these past few months and interest rates are very low,” Sara says. “Roberts Brothers has taken all precautions to keep our agents and clients safe and healthy during this time. We are always here for you.”

very bit as engaging as she is spunky, local Real Estate Agent Courtney “Coco” Fox Osborne of Fairhope’s Local Property, Inc., is the Bay Area’s “Realtor on the Run,” covering properties spanning Mobile to the beach and everything in between. “Real estate is fast-paced and extremely competitive, presenting unique challenges with each transaction,” Coco says. “The strengths that set me apart are my work ethic and authenticity. Real estate is a sink or swim career path and my family’s motto serves as a cautionary reminder: ‘If you don’t work, you don’t eat!’ Having dependents and a mortgage is all the motivation I need,” she shares. In constant pursuit of raising the bar when it comes to service and professionalism, Coco admits that showing homes is only a small part of the real estate business. “I’m always sharpening my saw and seeking innovative ways to market myself and stay relevant,” she says. A New Orleans native, Coco migrated to Mobile 18 years ago and hasn’t looked back, having established roots in Daphne with her husband, Brad, son, Fox, and their newest furry addition: Mera. A member of the local Port City Pacers and Bay Area Runners, Coco’s tagline derived from her love of running paired with her occupational passion. “I’m not exactly keeping up with the Kenyans, but I’m a pretty solid distance runner,” Coco jokes, whose biggest claim to fame was qualifying for the Boston Marathon with a 3 hour and 36 minute personal record and representing Alabama in their 2018 annual race. “That was a huge accomplishment and testament to hard work and discipline,” Coco shares. “It was definitely a test of mental fortitude, but for our local runners that haven’t yet experienced Boston, I still believe Firehouse Hill at mile 17 of the Mobile Marathon is way harder than Boston’s infamous Heartbreak Hill. It gets me every time!” Expressing herself with ease and confidence, Coco’s not only an effective communicator, but stands battle tested as a shrewd negotiator. “My late Granny Glo, in all her infinite wisdom, fondly referred to it as the ‘Gift of Gab,’” Coco jokes. “I’m an inherently curious person and try to be

mindful of times when it’s best to use my two ears rather than my single mouth, but sometimes I get excited! I genuinely enjoy getting to know people beyond the surface of small talk. We can be consumed with our filtered, social media personas of perfection, which is why honesty and vulnerability are refreshing character traits that I admire.” It’s this dedication to truth on which Coco bases each professional exchange. “Telling clients only what they want to hear is not profitable and a disservice to us both,” she shares. “Listing a home is not the same as selling a home. To be successful in a commission-based career requires stamina to speak up and prove your worth. I’d rather be honest and lose a listing than put my name on a home that’s never going to sell. And yes, even in today’s hot market, homes still expire if they’re overpriced and poorly maintained.” As for the local market, Coco jokes that it’s not a topic that can be so easily covered in a mere soundbite. “I work both sides of the Bay, and across our two counties, real estate sales and new construction have continued to soar despite the pandemic,” Coco says. “We’ve been in a seller’s market for a while, which basically means there are more buyers in the market than available homes for sale. Because of this, homes that are priced correctly don’t stay on the market very long and often sell at or close to their list price, sometimes in multiple offers to the highest bidder, exceeding the original list price. But if you’re a buyer, don’t be afraid to venture into homeownership. Prices may be on the rise, but with interest rates at an all-time low, homeownership remains one of the soundest longterm investments a person can make, and it all starts with the team you draft to guide you along the way. That’s why you chose a great Realtor for guidance and counsel, ensuring a smooth and seamless process from contract to close!”

Two women, a million things to do, and one unstoppable creative force. Getting to know Fairhope’s Angela Weil and Sadie Solberg, the pros behind Stone Interiors' marketing and creative content development, we’ve noticed how being in different stages of life offers a superior strategic advantage and creative inspiration for
Each unique, this yin and yang duo is able to present versatile yet appealing options in the marketplace for a wide variety of clients and pros. “We work with various professionals in the design and construction industry in addition to the customer to ensure every material aligns perfectly with the overall vision," Sadie shares. "Because we travel the world to develop relationships and discover new quarries, products, and solutions, we have access to suppliers all over the globe." Sadie notes that Dustin has his finger on the pulse of the supplier market trends and the contacts to get exactly what the clients want, no matter how specialized. "We can suggest things clients don’t even know about yet," Sadie boasts. "We even offer a referral program for designers and we’re creating a loyalty program that gives them access to education and products not available to the public,” Sadie reveals. Adding to Sadie’s excitement, Angela shares: “Our solution-oriented team has a wealth of experience and we’re the only company in the area to be accredited by the Natural Stone Institute. We continuously invest in education, technology, and training and have a large selection of inventory at our Loxley location." Having been raised in the business, Angela says she can testify to the fact that custom work has many details to consider, as stone quality and craftmanship can vary. "Gathering price quotes is never an apple to apple comparison, and our team can help you navigate the process from selection to installation," Angela assures. Having raised two children, Angela has a tried and true material knowledge and firmly believes in choosing materials that live well in your home. If you fear spills and stains, Angela can recommend the best options for a busy lifestyle. Not one to disappoint, she shares: “Creating a space is very personal and it should be a fusion of things that function and create feelings and memories. I always tell clients to speak up about how they truly live in order to determine the perfect surfaces to suit their lifestyle.” And if your first home is a fixer-upper and you dream of a customized just-for-your luxurious master bath, Sadie is your go-to gal and can share her experience. Inspired by her travels, Angela aims to enhance the business with handpicked curated items made of natural stone for the home (think coffee tables to sculptures). Regardless, whether you’re a practical traditionalist or seek the glam life, it doesn’t matter; this team is the total package.

rom covering the Atlanta market studying the latest design trends one day, to donning work boots and sweating it out in the slab warehouse to decide which newly imported sneak peeks to reveal on social media the next, these ladies have a lot to do.
With the home boom in full swing, Angela Weil and Sadie Solberg share their 2020 dream home details. Whether you prefer your neutrals with a side of natural or you long for a little self-indulgent grandeur, the only question that remains is this: Are you an Angela or a Sadie (or perhaps a little of both)?
Sadie: “Go bold or go home” is what I think when I see this stunner. The island made of Bentley by Cambria Surfaces and its to-die-for waterfall effect screams, “I’m fabulous, come for champagne and charcuterie!” With such a beautiful piece of stone, why wouldn’t you take it to the floor? The White Cliff Cambria quartz countertops and backsplash balance this standout island perfectly and the brass finishes add just enough glam and contrast.
Angela: I love the darker cabinets with the contrasting bright white quartz countertops. The dark cabinets hide dirt and the quartz is very easy to maintain. It’s also super durable, making it perfect for a high-traffic kitchen. Also, the brass faucet and knobs (which would be affordable to swap out) add that trendy edge and pop of color to this classic kitchen.
Angela: I’d love a soaking tub and a full height backsplash of one of the Italian Calacatta Marbles. Cristallo Quartzite is another beauty for vanities if working with a more earthy palette. I also love the luxury of a slab shower and the practicality of not having grout lines that tile showers have. Mystery White honed marble is another favorite on the floors and in the shower. It’s a strong and durable natural stone that works well with my lifestyle and can vary from a pure white to one with neutral veining.
Sadie: I’d choose his and hers vanity tops made of Silestone White Zeus by Casentino and I have always dreamed of an entire wall of fun vibrant tile in my bathroom. I would bring balance and a soothing element to the room with neutral countertops and floors.

Contrast! Dark cabinets and/or kitchen islands with light countertops. We are kind of over the all-white look! Alabama White, a locally sourced marble, is a classic favorite and is still on trend. We love the Alabama we have been sourcing with some heavier grey veining. A waterfall island. Add instant visual appeal and sophistication to a kitchen island with an edge that flows over the side, covering the island and continuing to the floor. The Italian Carraras and Calacattas make stunning waterfalls, but so do many of the quartz products. We love too many of them that have recently arrived in the latest container to pick a favorite, but they all make a stunning finished product Tile. We are all in for being creative with tile! With so many new options, we love finding that perfect one that works with all the other elements from wallpaper to light fixtures. We have endless options for backsplashes, surrounds, and flooring.

Daily health screenings, physical distancing, handwashing, face coverings, and a systematic process of cleaning have been implemented to mitigate any outbreak. “I feel that the challenges we have all faced over the last six months must be used to enhance the way we deliver instruction, whether remotely or in person. There are countless opportunities to take steps necessary to move beyond the industrial age of education and more into educating our students to their highest potential in preparation for whatever the future holds,” he shares. As expected, the first week back in school was filled with emotions for the students and faculty alike. “The energy and excitement during the first couple of days, regardless of limitations, provided our teachers and staff reassurance of just how significant they are in the lives of children,” Mr. Barber shares. “UMS-Wright is exceptionally blessed to have families that have contributed to our incredible facilities over the years, but the facilities — the brick and mortar — only come alive when the students are
present. I think it has rejuvenated so many educators who are determined now more than ever to fulfill the mission of UMS-Wright and ensure that the 127-year legacy of our school flourishes,” he says. And despite the severity and unpredictability of something as serious as a global pandemic, Mr. Barber says his ultimate hope is that this experience has lasting effects on humanity as a whole regarding the importance of doing our part to help others. “Suppose that means wearing a face covering all year, having no assemblies, or restructuring some longstanding traditions,” Mr. Barber says. “In that case, collectively, I hope that we recognize that we do those things to benefit not just ourselves, but also our fellow man. I am proud to be a part of a collective school community that demonstrates the words of our school prayer in ensuring that ‘those who follow after will find in us an example of truth and courage, the spirit of our school.’”

The reaction from Jessica’s fitness community has been tremendous. With people relying on social media to help them stay motivated, Jessica saw a big increase in followers looking for advice, tips, encouragement, and community. Jessica says it’s the relationships she builds with her clients that provide the most rewarding aspect of her job. “Knowing that I helped make someone’s life better keeps me going every single day,” she shares. Moving forward, Jessica plans to continue to build on social media platforms so they can become online homes for local and long distance clients alike. And though keeping up with one’s personal health should always be a priority, Jessica wants her followers to remember to give themselves grace during this unpredictable year. “Recognize where you are in your fitness journey, admit how you got there, and then take action to change it,” she says.

WOMEN & WEALTH During these uncertain times, it may be helpful to have someone to turn to with questions regarding your finances. You don’t have to navigate through this alone.
More than six months into this global pandemic many of us are still waiting, wondering, and feeling like our lives are on hold. But does life ever get put on hold? So much has changed for so many (me included). My oldest daughter’s high school senior year (along with the rest of the Class of 2020) was pretty much canceled, and my middle daughter turned 16 and couldn’t take her driver’s test until a month later. However, with virtual ceremonies (and even virtual cheer tryouts for my youngest daughter), so many things have transpired in the midst of this chaos. While life did indeed go on, I, as well as many others, have been impacted by the virus. And for many, there can be questions such as: What’s next? What are the long-term effects? How will this affect me and my family? Have I accomplished enough? There are also more practical questions: When did I last update my beneficiaries? Am I leaving my children enough money to support them? It is always good to review and check on your investment planning affairs. As birthdays, anniversaries, births, deaths, and marriages still go on, we all have to adapt and work to ensure our finances are in order. Life is unpredictable — it always has been. This has just been a collective reminder that this is not a dress rehearsal; this is the real deal. If you or someone you know need help navigating an investment plan, I am here. You don’t have to go it alone. Stay safe and be well.

women of all ages, his line of makeup and skincare is simplified yet cuttingedge. Blending anti-aging and goodfor-you ingredients, he shares what are sure to be your new obsessions.
Hello Ladies! I’ve always been mesmerized by color and I’m super excited to share my new LipWear lip gloss. Uniquely enhanced with peppermint oil, it’s designed to shine, treat, and protect. The anti-aging ingredients protect your pout from environmental aggressors while stimulating collagen production and minimizing fine vertical lines. Our proprietary formula and clinically proven technology containing peptides, botanicals, and hyaluronic acid improves hydration and texture and increases lip volume. I advise applying twice daily for 30 consecutive days to see and feel the amazing and youthful benefits! Available in 15 shades from Baby Doll to Label Snob, note the new innovative tube with magnetic closure — an industry first! I’m also super proud of this skincare gem, as we all know the toll our Southern sun can take on the skin — not to mention the damaging environment and pollution. No matter your age, my Essential UV SPF 50 Complete Daily Defense Anti-Pollution Lotion and Primer is the perfect skin protection for an active lifestyle. This exclusive, lightas-a-feather formula boosts antioxidant protection as much as 200 percent. It also protects the skin from blue light pollution, 99 percent of UV radiation, and prevents UVA and UVB damage. Sweatproof and water-resistant, it can be worn alone or under makeup as a primer. Talk about hope in a bottle!
Until next time, stay beautiful!

or me, nothing says “welcome home” quite like the scent that greets you when you walk in the door. A wonderful smell is a proven mood booster, and I discovered my scent a few years ago on a trip to Italy with my father and local artist friend, Nall. In a charming shop in Pietra Santa, Nall and I sniffed every Dr. Vranjes diffuser in the store. All divine, I settled on the Giardino di Boboli which evokes the atmosphere of the Boboli Gardens in Florence. The shopkeeper carefully wrapped the glass bottle like Midas’ treasure, and I smuggled it home par avion. Luckily, you can also purchase it in the states on DrVranjes.us or amazon.com. While most diffusers are unattractive (I tend to hide them behind artful tchotchkes), this next one is a showstopper! The Veranda Porcelain Diffuser has a sculpted branch so beautiful you’ll want to display it in a prominent place. It’s available just down the road at Fairhope’s Living Well home and gift store and at LivingWell.com. I switch up my scents during the holidays to The Thymes Frasier Fir available for purchase at Objects of Fairhope and Daphne, as well as Thymes.com. It makes your whole house smell like Christmas!
Like most, Southern influencer Charlotte Kilborn Carey has been spending a lot more time at home as of late. With our homes doubling as our offices, classrooms, restaurants, and movie theaters, many of us have used lockdown to organize, purge, and zhuzh our nests. Here she shares her favorite whimsical must-haves to feel good in your home and — gosh darn it — happier there.
I also love a good faux dog — especially one I don’t have to feed and walk! Enter my fake-Fido: a ceramic Frenchie from Houzz.com. I move him all around my house according to his moods. He’s adorable and always happy to see me. If you’ve popped into Wildflowers of Fairhope you’ve met their mascot, Marcel. He stands guard over the store and thinks he’s part of the staff. GrandinRoad.com has a terrific boxwood option as well in a variety of breeds and sizes. They are perfect on your front porch to greet your guests. Anyone who knows me knows I also adore orange (the color, not the fruit). I’ll take any opportunity to put orange throw pillows in chairs or on sofas or beds. TrinaTurk.com has a perfect choice with a stylized Greek Key pattern — a total win-win! Chairish.com has a Hermès velvet and linen pair I am ob-sessed with that I can’t guarantee will still be there when this goes to print. A perfect option for equestrian aficionados, the Schumacher orange Fauborg horse pillow cover on Etsy.com is absolute perfection… trust me on this. In my humble opinion, no lounging area is complete without a sumptuous and cozy throw blanket. Italian bespoke textile brand Sferra has THE throw, and with a gorgeous array of colors to choose from, it’s guaranteed to look perfect in your home. Check it out at Sferra.com. Living Well in Fairhope offers an almost identical style in just as many colors if you fancy shopping local. I have one in pink and it’s one of my most treasured gifts I’ve ever received. Okay, trays! Can we just talk about this cute and portable quadrilateral for a moment?! They are the go anywhere, take anywhere, perfectly sized accent for everything from your bedside or party table to displaying a charcuterie offering for outdoor gatherings. I fancy this monkey-themed tray with a gilded bamboo trim from VividHue.com because I just love these particular motifs. Another great find is this super cute “For the Love of Louis” tray from ArtSugar.com. It offers designer style at a great price, and no one appreciates a two-for more than me. I hope you are all finding happiness wherever you are in the little things life offers you. See you on the Pink Carpet soon (in my pink mask, of course!)
