Iberia Parish, Louisiana Iberia Parish is a savory gumbo of cultural influences. From the Native Attakapas, to the earliest known Africans who arrived in 1746, to the Spaniards led by founder Francisco Bouligny in 1779, and the thousands of Acadians who settled from France and from Acadie, the parish draws its unique vibe from a melting pot of distinct, yet complimentary cultures.

Iberia Parish Installs Two New Historical Markers I The Iberia African-American Historical Society unveiled a new state historical marker at the Iberia Parish Courthouse in November of 2021. The marker commemorated the legacy of the Howe Institute, which was established in 1888 to educate the area’s African-American population prior to integration. The institute was founded by the St. Paul Congregational Church of New Iberia with assistance of the American Missionary Association and an endowment from philanthropist Peter Howe of Illinois. The school originally stood where the Iberia Parish Courthouse is located today. The other side of the marker commemorates Booker T. Washington’s visit to the Howe Institute on April 24, 1915. Washington, a celebrated orator, educator and presidential advisor, made a trip to New Iberia specifically to visit the institute.

In May of 2021, a marker honoring New Iberia’s native daughter Kathleen Babineaux Blanco was erected on Main Street at Bouligny Plaza. The marker was a project of the Iberia Preservation Alliance, thanks to a donation from Blanco’s sister Pricilla Cadwell and her husband John Cadwell. One side features the traditional brown and brass lettering, denoting Blanco’s service as the state’s first female governor and her wish to be remembered more for “deep faith in God, her strong commitment to family, and her life-long love of Louisiana” than for her public service. The reverse of the marker features a photo of Blanco etched into the finish, with details of her offices held in service to the state.

Stop by the center (2513 Hwy. 14) during business hours to pick up maps and guides or to talk to one of the informed and enthusiastic staff members.
The Iberia Performing Arts League (IPAL) is a well-loved, talented community theater organization that offers five major productions per season, a summer youth play or activity, concerts and several special events (including a classic movies series each summer). Housed in the iconic Essanee Theater in Historic Downtown New iberia, IPAL performances are always a delight.
There’s nothing more Acadiana than moss-draped oaks and cypress trees, and New Iberia City Park has plenty of both. Relax in the shade with a picnic, watch the ducks waddle around the pond, or get some exercise on the walking track or tennis courts – or, better yet, set out in your kayak or canoe down the Teche from the park’s pier and boat launch.
Charm and comfort: that’s what you’ll find at the B&Bs found throughout Iberia Parish. For all the comforts of home, a prime location and plenty of Acadiana charm, stay a night or two at The Bayou Chateau or nextdoor property Chateau Royale, both overlooking the banks of the Bayou Teche in Historic Downtown New Iberia.

While there’s a huge assortment of pecan options, there’s also an impressive selection of Louisiana gifts, including Cementine Hunter items and handcrafted jewelry.
When the owners of Books Along the Teche aren’t presenting the next Literary Festival in New Iberia, they’re curating their bookshop with a vast selection of titles about the Acadiana area and its people and cultures. You’ll find new and used books, out-of-print finds, and a large children’s section to puruse to your literary heart’s content.
For a whimsical and charming step into history, take a guided tour of the Joseph Jefferson House and a stroll around the 15-acre Rip Van Winkle Gardens on Jefferson Island. COVER STORY
Murals of New Iberia
I
t doesn’t take long when touring around New Iberia to discover the city’s affection for murals. The colorful creations can be found on the sides of historic structures, on brick or concrete walls, and even on a few modern buildings. The murals not only add beauty and interest to New Iberia, but they also underscore its support and appreciation for the art community and the creative culture prevalent throughout the area. Each mural has a backstory: an origin that hints at the collaborative spirit found in the very foundation of New Iberia, itself. The Super Shell Spruce Up mural (above), for example, started with a desire among the city’s residents to tidy up a vacant gas station at the corner of North Lewis and Main Street – while at the same time preserving its history. Josh and Tiffani Pellerin, along with local artist Paul Schexnayder, asked permission from the building’s owner to transform the abandoned building into a welcome sign, of sorts: to cover its blank concrete wall with a mural that would capture the essence of their corner of Acadiana. Amid the pandemic, the community came together, agreeing on a design, power washing the building, and donating funds and supplies for the job. The result is a work of art that tells a story – Tabasco, sugar cane, sugar mills, gumbo, crabs, Shadows-on-the-Teche, and a happy alligator are only a few of the images contained in this lively scene. Now, the once downtrodden building that seemed to say nothing at all, beckons visitors to the Queen City and invites them to relish in her splendor.
14 DISCOVER IBERIA
Artist Colette Bernard was looking for a way to make life brighter for everyone during the pandemic shutdown, so she decided to bring her talent to New Iberia, transforming a blank wall on Bridge Street into a signature scene of smiling faces. “Give me some sugar…I’m your neighbor!” it beckons in French, making the Colette Bernard Faces mural one of this area’s favorites.
If you’re driving along New Iberia’s E St. Peter Street, you’ll likely spot a windowless concrete-block building splashed with a huge crawfish painting on one side and a brightly-colored Cajun mural on the other. Inside is a dining spot housing one of the best overstuffed seafood poboys in town – along with thick, perfectly-seasoned fries. This is the home of Bon Creole, owned since 1995 by Randall Montegut, and that artwork on the side of its building is the instantly recognizable Bon Creole mural.
Down Hopkins Street, just south of St. Peter, the House of Rudolph mural depicts the joie de vivre and diversity of the city’s residents. In tribute to the late Rudy Plomboy, the “Wise Man of Hopkins Street” and owner of the House of Rudolph (a lively venue where music, dancing and poetry were always on tap), non-profit organization Envison da Berry commissioned artist Jimmy Rink and wife Carolyn to paint the mural as part of its local art and civic engagement initiative.
For a taste of some edgier artwork, head down W Main Street to the Old Charles Boldt Paper Mill, where local graffiti artists are invited periodically to repaint the surfaces of the structure. Today the abandoned property is alive with vibrant colors and rich scenes, all thanks to forwardthinking owner Greg Mouton and a group of talented artists.
Jimmy Rink is responsible for another one of the city’s most treasured works: the Bouligny Plaza History of New Iberia mural. Rink (with the help of Girl Scouts, who came on weekends to assist) transformed a blank brick wall in the Steamboat Pavilion into a veritable snapshot of New Iberia history and firsts, cleverly using structural elements (like existing windows) to tell the story. The Bayou Teche Paddle Trail has plenty of opportunities to experience Iberia, as well as the other three parishes along its route.
Iberia is one of four parishes along the 135-mile Bayou Teche Paddle Trail — Louisiana’s only National Water Trails System. Sixteen access points and information kiosks are now erected all along the route, giving background and history of each area. As part of a TECHE Project initiative, the first kiosk was erected in Parc de Pont Breaux in Breaux Bridge in August of 2018. Since then 15 others have been developed at docks from Port Barre to Berwick.

The property incorporates the home, Jefferson’s hunting lodge and painting studio, and Rip’s Rookery (bird sanctuary). BY MAURINE BERGERIE
BY DIXIE POCHÉ
BY M.M. LEBLANC
Native Iberian Maurine Bergerie examines the history of the parish from its beginnings in the 1700s to the 1950s. Using legal documents and courthouse and church records, Bergerie provides information on the history of the parish, its people and their society. Historic photographs, maps and illustrations further supplement the book, providing a visual component to the rich Iberian history.
Author Dixie Poché traverses Cajun country to dive into the recipes and stories behind regional specialties such as boudin, cracklin, gumbo and hogs head cheese. From the Smoked Meats Festival in Ville Platte to Thibodaux’s Bourgeois Meat Market, where miles of boudin have been produced since 1891, this is a mouthwatering dive into Cajun devotion to the pig.
In this final volume in the historical fiction trilogy about the French Acadian Exile, we conclude an unparalleled saga of the star-crossed lovers Evangeline and Gabriel torn apart during the Acadian Exile by England. The young lovers and their families are at risk in a game of political intrigue, murder and espionage set against the glamour and adventure of 18th century Versailles, London and Acadia.

BY ANNE L. SIMON Set in 1839 New Iberia, this saga begins in a town poised for prosperity – where Acadian, French, English, and American immigrants have joined Spanish settlers in the area, and where steamboats busily traverse the Bayou Teche. When signs of yellow fever threaten an epidemic, a privileged Hortense Duperier and Félicité, an enslaved woman from Haiti, defy the medical practices and social constraints of their time to save the young town.
BY GLEN CONRAD Considered the gold standard of New Iberia history, this classic (recently back in print after 10 years) focuses on the people and events that shaped the city. Presented in twentyseven essays, the work focuses on the people who have fashioned New Iberia: early Spanish settlers, French Creoles and their Cajun neighbors, Anglo-Americans and AfroAmericans, all of whom have sought their fortunes on the third bend of Bayou Teche.
BY JAMES LEE BURKE From New Iberia’s own James Lee Burke, the latest installment in the Holland family saga is both riveting and one of the author’s most ambitious works to date. It dismantles the myths of both the twentieth-century American West and the peace-and-love decade, excavating the beauty and idealism of the era to show the menace and chaos that lay simmering just beneath the surface. Be sure to check out Burke’s many other novels based in New Iberia.
BY SHANE K. BERNARD Delving into this legendary waterway of Acadiana, local historian Shane K. Berard surveys the coming of indigo, cotton and sugar, examines the Civil War battles on the Teche, details the misery of the postbellum era, and chronicles the bayou’s slow decline, while also looking at modern efforts to redesign the Teche and keep it clean.
BY HESTER YOUNG The third novel in the trilogy that follows heroine Charlie Cates, this spooky thriller is set on a plantation in Kalo Valley, a town based on New Iberia. In order to find the missing teenager and stop a dangerous predator from striking again, Charlie is forced to embrace the gift she has always tried to conceal. Meanwhile, someone is watching her every move, and the closer Charlie gets to the truth, the more distant her chances of ever leaving the island alive.
BY ZACHARY RICHARD Acadian heritage francophone and Cajun singer-songwriter-poet Zachary Richard follows the route of exile that brought the Acadians to Louisiana, studying the evolution of the Acadian community in Louisiana and furnishing a portrait of contemporary Acadian/Cajun culture through its social traditions and artistic expression. Rich in archival images and captivating photography, the book is a beginner’s guide to the Acadian/Cajun experience of Louisiana.
