Whether you are a resident of the Drewry area, are spending a week in the Kerr Lake area or just enjoying a sunny afternoon of fishing, Bu-chanan’s Store has developed a reputation of o ff e r i n g everything you m i g h t n e e d , from supplies and g r o c e r y items to lunch and dessert. Longtime favorites include hoop cheese and bologna sandwiches. The store’s reputation for ofof fering a little bit of everything goes Buchanback more than a century. Billy Lee Buchan an and his brothers opened Buchanan’s Store in 1878. More recently, Wilson Fleming operated the store from 1971 until just a few years ago. Buchanan’s Store’s reputation has expanded far beyond the community of Drewry over the years. While it remains a favorite stop for travelers to the
lake and local residents, the general store has drawn customers from other areas of North Carolina and from as far away as England, Italy, Australia, the West Indies and Russia. Today, the store is owned and opop erated by husband and wife team Jamie and Jennie Reese. Jamie has had strong ties to the area landmark child since his childhood, when he began pumping gas and toting ice at the age of 9. J a m i e came to Bu Buchana n ’ s folStore fol lowing a career as a welder and considers op operating the busi busifulfillness as the fulfill ment of a childhood dream. The Reeses have held true to the store’s “If we ain’t got it, you don’t need it” slogan by offering ice, fishing supplies, grocery items, local produce, tubs and life jackets, hunting vests, camping supplies, hardware, straw hats, ropes, car batteries and much more. With an expanded kitchen, the general store now features The Deli at Buchanan’s with a menu of “sammiches” and ice cream. Customers can browse the menu when they arrive, or take a look

at the day’s specials on the store’s Facebook page. A recent posting highlighted a special summer treat: the Banana Boat Split. Other recent offerings have included wraps and chicken salad. The store’s food options extend beyond the deli. Watch for seasonal fruit such as strawberries and blueberries to use in your recipes or just enjoy as a snack. Also watch for a variety of meats during the course of the year. If you want to start a garden, you don’t have to leave the Kerr Lake area. Buchanan’s Store carries a range of plants and seeds, from flowers to vegetables. Whether you have a garden or not, the store’s garden décor and

irginia and North Carolina residents have been disputing over the “official” name of the Buggs Island/John H. Kerr Lake since construction on the John H. Kerr dam was completed in 1952. Construction of the dam—a measure to prevent disastrous flooding of the Roanoke River—is what resulted in the creation of the lake. The Buggs Island lake is now known as the largest res-ervoir in Virginia by surface area. At maximum capacity, the lake has over 850 miles of shore-line and covers about 50,000 acres. The lake spans Vance, Granville and Warren counties in North Carolina and Mecklenburg, Charlotte and Halifax counties in Virginia. The naming dispute originates with the construction of the dam itself. Before construction began in 1947, it was known as Buggs Island Lake, as named in the Flood Control Act of 1944 and ref-erenced in 1984 reports from the Army Corps of Engineers, the organization who built the dam. It was named Buggs Island

due to the small island that was downstream of the dam. The island was named so after Samuel Bugg III who bought the island around 1752. The name “John H. Kerr” comes from the North Carolina Congressman who was instrumental in obtaining funding for construction of the dam. Congressman Kerr was defeated in primaries mere months before the dam was dedicated to him. In June of 1952, Congress passed Public Law 203 which states, “That the project known as ‘Buggs Island Reservoir, Virginia and North Caro-lina,’ shall hereafter be designated as the “John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir.” Virginia state leg-islature required in 1952 that the body of water remain known as Buggs Island Lake. However, in 2015 Senator Frank Ruff passed a new bill, Senate Bill 972, which repealed the original House Joint Resolution requiring them to refer to it as Buggs Island Lake, and now allows state agen-cies and local governments to refer to the lake as John H. CAMPING ON Buggs Island Lake

very year out of towner’s flock to Buggs Island Lake, or Kerr Lake if you are on the North Carolina side of the fun, for boating, camping, and water sports. Camping is proven to reduce stress and can be good for emotional and physical health. It also offers an opportunity to be “one with nature” with plenty of time to explore everything that nature provides. Nowadays, more and more people are expressing interest in camping in all of its forms – From adventure camping to glamping. Mecklenburg County contains a bounty of beautiful lake front camp sites and cabins.

Location: Hwy 58, a miles west of Clarksville, Va. Facilities: 21 sites for tens or RV’s; amenities like hot showers, flush toilets and a dump station. A swimming beach and picnic area make the campground ideal for families. Open: Seasonal (May – September) Water-front campsites available: Yes Online booking: No (first come, first served) Overview: Buffalo Park is a small day use and campground park, located on John H. Kerr Reservoir. The campground is open May 1 – September 30. The Day Use Park is open year-around. Facilities: Visitors to Buffalo Park will enjoy the lakeside views and the quaint park. The campground has 21 sites: 11 shady electric sites (1 is a double) and 10 primitive sites are small and are open to walk-in campers. They are not reservable. Two of the electric sites are paved and are accessible. Amenities include “family-style” individual restrooms with hot showers, sink and flush toilets. Park has a small dump station. Park has a swim beach, picnic shelter and a boat ramp. Recreation: Public lands around the lake are open to hunting with appropriate state licenses. Game species include whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, gray squirrel, cottontail rabbit, fox and raccoon. Resident waterfowl species include wood duck, black duck, mallard and Canadian geese. The Army Corps of Engineers manages 26 Wildlife Management Areas around the lake that provide yearround opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, birding and more. Kerr Lake is widely known for fishing, with large-mouth bass, striped bass, crappie and catfish caught. Fishing and hunting are regulated by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries on the Virginia side of the lake.

Recreation: Public lands around the lake are open to hunting with appropriate state licenses. Game species include whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, gray squirrel, cottontail rabbit, fox and raccoon. Resident waterfowl species include wood duck, black duck, mallard and Canadian geese. There are 26 Wildlife Management Areas around the lake that provide year-round opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, birding and more. The lake is widely known for fishing, with large-mouth bass, striped bass, crappie and flathead catfish available. Viriginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries regulate hunting and fishing on Kerr Lake on the Virginia side (which is known as Buggs Island Lake).
Occoneechee State Park
Location: 1192 Occoneechee Park Road, Clarksville, Va. Open: The park is open daily from 8 a.m.–dusk. The Visitor Center is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Overview: Named for Native Americans who lived in the area for hundreds of years, Occoneechee is on the John H. Kerr Reservoir, better known as Buggs Island Lake, and is popular with anglers and boaters.
Facilities include cabins, campsites, an equestrian campground, picnic shelters, an amphitheater, a playground, boat ramps, and a private concession offering boat rentals and snacks. Occoneechee Marina offers a fuel dock and boat slips with water and electric service for annual rentals. Six slips are available for rent to overnight camping and cabin guests. The park also has 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The visitor center and museum introduce visitors to Native American history and the indigenous Occoneechee people. Recreation: Providing 24-hour access Virginia’s largest lake, three boat ramps open the door to 48,000 acres of fishing, boating and aquatic recreation. Forty-eight campsites are available for tent and RV campers. Some sites are right on the shoreline, providing easy fishing and boating access. The park also has 13 cabins that allow guests to enjoy the comforts of home as well as beautiful views of the lake. An equestrian campground with 11 sites and 11 covered horse stalls offers easy access to the park’s trail system. Occoneechee also has picnic areas near the lake, a playground, boat rentals and a lakefront amphitheater.

larksville’s annual Virginia Lake Festival—colloquially known as Lakefest—is celebrating its 44th iteration this year. The festival first came to be in 1977, when Robert Edward “Buck” Buchanan was mayor. The Virginia Lake Festival was started as a celebration of Clarksville’s status as the only lakeside town in Virginia. Lakefest has been named “One of the Top 20 Festivals in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society for several years running. This year’s events have not been postponed as of writing this article, and the festival is currently scheduled for Thursday, July 15 through Saturday,

July 17. Traditionally, the festival attracts upwards of 20,000 tourists, and in 2015 it brought out a record-breaking 80,000 people. The Virginia Lake Festival features three days packed full of events from Thursday evening to Saturday night. The festivities begin on Thursday evening with free tethered hot air balloon rides for children 12 and younger. The hot air balloon rides usually begin at 6:00p.m. at Lake Country Business Park located on Noblin Farm Road next to the Clarksville Elementary School. Of course, this event depends on the weather’s cooperation so we will cross our fingers that weather permits for this tradition to continue this year. This year’s Friday opening ceremonies will feature the Tobacco Road band. The Clarksville Chamber has also tentatively announced that The

Konnection will be playing on Saturday, July 17. The Konnection is one of the East Coast’s premier party bands that specializes in Top 40, Rock, Country, R & B, Beach and Oldies. The band has performed at Lakefest before, and has also featured performances at other festivals such as The Virginia Cantaloupe Festival, The Colgate Country Showdown and The Virgilina Summerfest. Friday and Saturdays during Lakefest also feature a number of well-known and popular events such as the Antique Auto Show, The 5k Run hosted by the Mecklenburg County YMCA, Sand Sculptors, and the Arts and Crafts Festival in which over 200 vendors line Virginia Avenue’s street to sell their unique products. Of course, arguably the most well-known part of the festival is the fireworks show which takes

place Saturday night. Once night falls on Saturday, boats gather on Buggs Island Lake and people line the shoreline and festival venue to get the best possible view of the fireworks show. The fireworks are visible for miles around, giving Mecklenburg County residents a beautiful show Saturday night. We hope to see some of these events return this year; while being held safely and adhering to any lasting COVID-19 restrictions. Virginia’s Governor Northam has hinted that he believes restrictions will be lifted further in mid-June, dependent of course on COVID numbers continuing to decrease.

Public Swimming Access Public swim beaches are available at all Corps of Engineers campgrounds in the area: • North Bend Park • Longwood Park • Buffalo Park • Rudds Creek Day Use Area • Ivy Hill Park • Palmer Point Boating Regulations Motorboats, PWSC’s (ie. Jet ski’s) and unmotorized boats (ie. sailboats, canoes, etc) are welcomed on Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake. Because the lake includes water in both Virginia and North Carolina, the rules vary slightly. However, each state honors the boating and fishing regulations from the other state. Regulations North Carolina boating is regulated by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Virginia boating is regulated by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. There are a number of regulations regarding life jackets, hull-numbers, registration, boating courses, safety equipment, lighting, alcohol and other things. If you are not familiar with Virginia and North Carolina boating laws, you would wise to read up. Kerr Lake regularly patrolled and boats are sometimes stopped. Required Boating Courses Both Virginia and North Carolina are ‘phasing in’ requirements that boaters (for motor boats with engines of 10hp or more) and users of PWC’s (Jet Skis, etc) complete ‘Safe Boating Courses.’ In Virginia, as of July 2012, all PWC operators, regardless of age, and motorboat operators 30 years of age or younger must have completed the “safe boating” course and have proof with them. In North Carolina, the current requirement for the “safe boating” course for boats AND PWC’s is for anyone under the age of 26. If you are visiting North Carolina, you must abide by the requirements of the state where you live. Both states have an index of both seated and online courses by location. Boat Ramps & Marinas There are many boat ramps and marinas on Kerr Lake. Because the lake level can change considerably, when the lake level is low, some ramps do not extend all the way into the water and cannot be used. Boat Ramps / Picnic Areas The following is a list of public and private facilities, and who they are maintain by, located on Kerr Lake/ Buggs Island Lake. Many of these facilities charge a fee. Some boat ramps cannot be used if the water
