Springtime has arrived with warm breezes and the Mexia Baseball Association ballgames are being played. It seems that we are almost back to normal after a strange COVID-19 Springtime last year. As I recently read from the second chapter of Philippians, Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi, our beautiful city of Mexia came to mind. In his writing, Paul expresses to the church his desire to see unity among believers in Jesus Christ occurring through “being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind” and looking out “for the interests of others.” Nic Collins, Minister of Youth, FBC Mexia Having recently joined the community, I’ve witnessed, firsthand, the love and unified efforts of our town, and more specifically the ecclesial community (our churches) as they seek to provide for both the physical and spiritual needs of others. SESQUICENTENNIAL MEDALLION FOR SALE
This is the Sesquicentennial Medallion. They are $20 each and may be purchased at the Mexia Economic Development Corporation office located at 214 North Sherman Street. Please call ahead at 254-562-7900 to make a reservation to purchase the Medallion. All proceeds from the sale of the 2021 Sesquicentennial Medallions go to support the planning and hosting of the 2021 150th celebration. A date has not been set as of yet for the celebration because of COVID-19 restrictions. This is a beautiful medallion designed by Bob Crider after the 1871 Silver Dollar. There is a serial number for each medallion in the little rectangle box north of the Red River.

Mexia High PALs evolves during pandemic The PALs of Mexia High School are glad to be stuffing envelopes with rodeo information for the Chamber of Commerce to send to businesses in the community! PALs (Peer Assistance and Leadership) is a national organization designed especially for high school juniors and seniors who have a desire to help others. The course prepares these students with practical ways to make positive contributions to the lives of those around them. The primary method for accomplishing this in PALs is to mentor younger students in the district; ideally, the high school students spend one class period each day visiting another campus and working one-on-one with students there. Because COVID made travel to other campuses impossible this year, plans were improvised and roles have evolved. This year, PALs have recorded themselves reading children’s books, and the videos have been digitally shared with the younger grades. The PALs have even learned to implement the use of a green screen and new software, so they are able to edit their own videos.

where the students will be in charge of interviewing community members, first responders, and business leaders via a virtual platform that will allow the interviews to be shared with each of the campuses in the district, in an effort to spotlight the many career opportunities in our community.
The future of MHS PALs is bright, not only with the prospect of returning to the younger campuses next year, but now with the added perspective of community involvement and service projects. The PALs program is currently in its second year at Mexia High School.

Local dignitaries and others involved with planning the new sports complex at Hughes City Park gathered there on Wednesday, March 31, for the ground-breaking of the complex. The ground-breaking took place next to the Armory, with guests seated on folding chairs beneath an open-sided tent. The wind was unnaturally strong, even to the point of blowing
over the metal chairs, but attendees did not let that bother them. Present to dig the ceremonial first spade of earth were representatives of Mexia City Council, the Parks committee, the Parkview Foundation, Limestone County, Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, Mexia Economic Development Corporation and the governor’s Economic Development and Tourism Office.
