Groesbeck, and the rest on the nation, is slowly and, in most cases, cautiously, getting back to normal. We are excited for the upcoming events to take place here in Groesbeck. We are discussing having some chamber events coming this fall, including the Fall Holiday market on The most important event to come to Groesbeck is our Heritage Festival which is the celebration of Groesbeck’s 150th year anniversary. The decision has been made that this will be an annual event to be held the last weekend of May every year. As many of you know, we had planned to do this event last year, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. But this year, everything is moving forward for this event and we have some exciting news! The parade, which will be held on Saturday, May 29 at 10 AM, will include the Mounted Color Guard and Mounted Cavalry from Ft. Hood. This is a first for Groesbeck. Our grand marshal for the parade will be Andy Andersen, also on horseback, from Channel 6 – also a 1st. The carnival is confirmed and they will open on Thursday, May 27, at 6 PM. They open again on Friday at 6 PM and Saturday at 10 AM. The Ranch Sorting National Championship event will be going on Saturday and Sunday at the Limestone County Fairgrounds arena. There will be many events going on all around Groesbeck that weekend, including events at Hawkins Park. We have hired a company out of Waco to video the entire weekend. They will do 2 videos, one a short 5 minute video that can be used for promo purposes. The second, a full length version, that will be used for historical purposes. We will probably show this video at a fall chamber function. It is not mandatory, but we are also encouraging attendees to wear period clothing to the Heritage Festival. This can be any period from the days of the first settlers to TX right up to early 1900s. This will just add to the wonderful atmosphere and enjoyment for everyone attending. The Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce welcomed Cross Creek Meadows Therapeutic Riding and Retreat Center as a new chamber member with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on March 19. Cross Creek Meadows is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides therapeutic riding or interaction with horses to bring confidence and healing to children, veterans and others with disabilities. A retreat-style setting on 36 acres houses the Equine Center consisting of a five-stall barn and a covered arena. Cross Creek Meadows exists to provide an opportunity for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth through equineassisted activities, therapy and retreats. HISTORY OF THE GROESBECK JOURNAL The Groesbeck Journal was founded in 1892 by W. C. Morris. Groesbeck had other newspapers prior to the Journal but none of them lasted for a very long length of time. The earlier newspapers in Groesbeck were the Groesbeck Enterprise, Groesbeck Herald, and the Groesbeck Clarian. The Limestone County New Era was a well-established newspaper in Groesbeck when the Journal was founded. The owner of the New Era was Layfette Lumpkin Foster. Foster went on to serve as Insurance Commissioner at one time. Governor Stephen Hogg appointed Foster as a member of the Texas Railroad Commission. Foster later became president of Texas A&M College (now Texas A&M University). A historical marker in honor of Layfette Lumpkin Foster stands on the grounds of the Limestone County Courthouse. Other editors and publishers of the Journal were Henry Ellis, B. W. Lawley, and Ira Lawley. In January or February of 1930, Jack R. Hawkins bought the Journal and was editor-published from 1930 until his death on April 1, 1988. Jack Hawkins grew up in Stephenville, Texas, where his father, Wade Hampton Hawkins, owned and operated the Stephenville Empire. The Journal remained in the Hawkins family until 2014. Thomas E. Tom) Hawkins was editor-publisher until the Journal was sold to the Moser Publishing Company in 2014. Jack Hawkins was ably assisted in the operation of the Journal all of those years by his wife, Euleta Ruth Sharp Hawkins. A Limestone County native, Mrs. Hawkins was assistant Limestone County School Superintendent of Limestone County at the time of her marriage. However, Mrs. Hawkins soon became very involved in the operation of the Journal. The Jack and Euleta Hawkins family included their three children -Jack W. Hawkins of Dallas, Martha Hawkins Stone of Groesbeck, and yours truly, Thomas E. Hawkins (Tom), also of Groesbeck.

Both Euleta and Jack Hawkins were very much involved in the various organizations and activities of the community. Both Thornton and Kosse had their own newspapers at one time. However, during World War II with supplies and help being hard to come by, the Journal took over the ownership and publication of The Thornton Hustler and The Kosse Cyclone. Both the Thornton Hustler and the Kosse Cyclone have had their respective spaces in the Journal. Over the years that the Hawkins family owned the Journal, the newspaper was blessed to have many outstanding employees. No story about the Journal under the ownership of the Hawkins family would be complete without naming Jack Franklin and his wife, Nelta Mae, and Leroy Lenamon. Each of these individuals were very devoted to their duties at the Journal and were employed at the newspaper for many years. The Journal has always been fortunate to have numerous other faithful and devoted employees. The Journal has always appreciated the support of the community in the publication of the Journal.

Horse Cavalry from Fort Hood to lead Groesbeck Heritage Festival Parade By Larry P. Smith

The Groesbeck Heritage Festival parade will feature an appearance by the Horse Cavalry Detachment of the 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood. Andy Anderson, a popular weather icon with Channel 6 in Waco will serve as the parade marshall. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29, in Groesbeck. Immediately following the parade, American Legion Ashburn-Hanna Post 288 will conduct a Memorial Day Service at the War Memorials on the Limestone County Court House lawn. Other military and veterans organizations will attend. Groesbeck is celebrating its 150th anniversary and pulling out all the stops to make this a memorable event. In choosing the Horse Cavalry, it is noted that this detachment was formed in 1971, the same year that Groesbeck observed its 100th anniversary. The detachment adheres to a strict policy of historical accuracy to represent an 187- era “horse soldier” troop. Government-issue uniforms, firearms, and literally everything is authentic. Even the horses and tack meet the original standards. Other accouterments accompany the mounted riders and make viewing the Horse Calvary a memorable experience. This is just one of the special happenings during the Groesbeck Heritage Festival and 150th Anniversary Celebration. Groesbeck is the county seat of one of Texas’ most historic counties and close to many historic sites and attractions. Memorial Day weekend in Groesbeck and Limestone County will be interesting, exciting and entertaining. For more information, contact the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce or watch the Groesbeck Journal for more articles on scheduled events. *** The present-day Horse Cavalry Detachment of the 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas, was formed under the direction of MG James C. Smith (Commander May 1971 to September 1973) of the 1st Cavalry Division – a general noted both for his ability to build morale among his troops and a keen sense of public relations. The Horse Cavalry Detachment of the 1st Cavalry Division, one of seven mounted cavalry units on active duty in the United States Army, brings to life the spirit of the cavalry by its transformation into a unit from the proud heritage of the United States Cavalry. The horse as a partner in war is no more. It has been over 70 years, February 1943, since the last mounted Troopers of the 1st Cavalry Division traded their horses for jeeps, trucks and tanks in preparation of their entrance into the Pacific Theater to fight the Japanese. The days of mounted troops and squadrons may be behind us, but the spirit and traditions of the old cavalry lives on in today’s modern 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. The garrison, workshops and stables are located in a rural setting adjacent to the main entrance of Fort Hood. The detachment is organized and equipped to represent the division as an 1870 era “horse Soldier” troop, complete with cavalry uniforms consisting of government issue blouses, trousers, hats, belts and boots, authentic firearms, sabers, saddles and work details of the period. The standard weapons issued to the troops are the 1875 Model 45-70 Springfield “Trap Door” Carbine, the 1875 Colt Single Action, 45 Caliber Revolver and the 1860 Light Cavalry Saber which was considered as standard issue for the Civil War period. Saddles used on the horses are the McClellan 1885 Saddle, which has been modified with the 1904 quarterstrap. The close order mounted drills are pattered as in the 1883 Manual of Cavalry Tactics. Even the horses chosen for platoon mounts are selected to the same physical standards imposed a century ago. Each horse must be no less than 15 hands high, and it must be dark, with a minimum of white markings. In addition to the horses and mules, the platoon has a Studebaker escort wagon, from the 1890s, which has been restored by members. The wagon was originally used to haul

supplies, but it is now mostly used to give rides to children attending the horse platoon shows. When not on post ceremonial or parade duty, the Troopers are assigned to carry out garrison duties somewhat similar to those of the era they represent. In addition to their normal military readiness training, Troopers assigned to the detachment groom, feed and care for their horses, maintain all the tack equipment and are trained in saddle restoration, boot making and horseshoeing. A major and not insignificant task in caring for the horses is the attention and individual care given to the horses’ hoofs. Approximately every 4 to 6 weeks, the iron horseshoes have to be replaced. Proper selection, utilization and fitting of horseshoes provides: protection and support for the hooves of the horses, correction of hoof conformation problems, prevention of irregular or uneven hoof wear, maintenance of proper form and balance of hoof, and improvement in the distribution of the horse’s weight across the hoof. The detachment operates as a self-sufficient unit, performing all of its specialized functional support. The leather shop is equipped with the hand tools and special machinery which is required to meet the needs of tack repair and remanufacture, saddle repair and restoration and boot repair and manufacture. Major use of the equipment is made during the late fall and winter months to ensure that all gear is in readiness for the spring and summer parade season. In addition to the personal gear that must be maintained by each Trooper, the small “motor pool” of special horse trailers which is used to transport the horses to remote locations and equipment trailers, is also maintained by the Troopers. Since its inception in 1972, the detachment has performed for all types of audiences, from children to Presidential Inaugural Parades, the 1984 World’s Fair, the 1996 Tournament of Roses Parade and literally thousands of state and local fairs, parades, and rodeos. The detachment performs formal military parades and reviews, civic and community street parades, and a 30 minute mounted drill and weapons demonstration. The mounted demonstration is a thrilling exhibition of skill and precision required of the mounted Trooper. It includes drill maneuvers at the walk, trot, and gallop. The weapons portion of the show demonstrates the mounted use of the Cavalry Saber, Colt .45 caliber Revolver, and Springfield Carbine. The detachment is entirely self-contained with 40 Troopers and 47 horses, 8 mules, an M1878 supply wagon, and an M1841 light mountain howitzer cannon. The detachment is flexible and can adjust performances and parades to create almost any effect, and only requires an area the size of a football field for its performances. There is no charge for any appearance, but travel and lodging cost must be paid by the requesting organizations. Costs vary from location to location, depending upon the distance from Fort Hood, Texas.

TEXAS RANGERS COMING TO 1ST HERITAGE FESTIVAL By Larry P. Smith

The Texas Rangers, legendary in Texas history, were created in 1823 by Stephen F. Austin, an empresario, who paid his first 10 men out of his own pocket because he was dissatisfied with the protection provided by the Mexican government. (Sound anything like US government protection on the Mexican border, today?) The Legends of the Texas Rangers are bringing their amazing exhibit, 24 by 48 feet, for viewing during the Groesbeck Heritage Festival. For that history, first hand, visit the exhibit on Saturday, May 29 in Groesbeck. The history of the Texas Rangers is so well covered by this exhibit that this writing would be anti-climactic to the real thing. Instead, we will relate a Texas Ranger happening in Groesbeck and Limestone County, provide information about that Texas Ranger who climbed in the annals of the US Marshals, plus a little personal history that involved natives and current residents of Groesbeck and Limestone County. John Judah and I were classmates. The limestone County Historical Commission has a recorded interview with John that all should hear. He grew up on Franklin Jackson’s ranch that included the Stroud Farm where the Emancipation Proclamation was read on June 19, 1865. Following is an edited version of John’s encounter with a Texas Ranger. “On that Sunday afternoon, 15 may 1955, I was working at Zeph’s gulf station. All of a sudden this oldsmobile pulled in- in one heck of a hurry. The driver said fill it up and hurry up. It had a long whip antenna. Obviously Law Enforcement of some sort. He said the Sheriff had been shot and we are going to try and arrest the shooter. In 1982, Peoples hosted the United States Marshals Convention in Dallas and scheduled an event at LS Ranches near Crowley. While there, Peoples met Cary Clawson, a young artist who was becoming well known for his western bronze sculptures. The two became close due to Clawson’s admiration for the lawman and Peoples’ attraction to Clawson’s bronzes that possess accuracy and unmatched attention to detail. When the time came to commission an artist for a sculpture of a Texas Ranger to coincide with the opening of the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, Peoples’ choice had already been made. “One Man’s Dream”, a sculpture by Cary Clawson, depicts Clint Peoples astride his favorite horse. GROESBECK HERITAGE FESTIVAL TO FEATURE THREE LOCAL BANDS

Our musical heritage is all around us. Bob Wills of Kosse introduced and made “western swing” famous. Cindy Walker, a prolific songwriter for major artists, was born near Mart and made Mexia her home. Les Baxter, a prominent composer, and director of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, was born in Mexia. Blind Lemon Jefferson, born in Freestone County, performed throughout the area and became nationally known. One of his songs was about Groesbeck. Karl Shiflet, a Groesbeck native deeply rooted in bluegrass music blends country, western swing and honkytonk to create his unique sound. He still calls Groesbeck “home.” In this tradition, the Heritage Festival has invited well-known and popular bands from the area to provide musical entertainment for its 150th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, May 29. This lineup features a variety of music for all and highlights local talent. Lawn chairs are suggested for avid music fans. The one-hour intermission between bands allows the opportunity to enjoy the many other activities and events of the festival – parade, carnival, Memorial Day ceremony, Fort Hood Mounted Calvary, Texas Ranger Exhibit, artisans, performers, vendor and local attraction booths, children’s games, other entertainment, and the National Championship Ranch Sorting. A full-time touring-country-Americana-roots band performs more than 200 shows a year and has been a perennial nominee for Texas Music Awards. Groesbeck Heritage Festival committee has released the official Groesbeck Heritage Festival T-shirts. T-Shirts are $15 each and can be purchased in red or gray. Sizes available range from small to 3X, youth sizes are also going to be available. Places you may purchase t-shirts are Nadine’s, Southern Grace, Groesbeck Journal, and ILSA. Please be aware that due to high demand sizes may be limited but more will be available in the coming weeks/days.

Local kids of all ages will have the opportunity to enjoy carnival rides and entertainment before the crowds arrive for the GroesbecK Heritage Festival and 150th Anniversary Celebration. The event on May 27, 28, 29 is expected to draw large crowds from around the area and other parts of Texas. The carnival opens at 6:00 pm on Thursday night May 27 and closes at 9:00 pm. Unlimited ride wristbands can be purchased if you are more than 36” tall and the same applies for Friday night. Saturday opening is at10:00 am and closing occurs when crowds are gone. Daisy Edwards, E & B Fun Time Rides will return a portion of the proceeds to help pay costs of the Heritage Festival. No rides on Sunday so everyone can attend the Communitywide Worship Service at the Fair Grounds and stay over to watch the finals of the Cinch Ranch Sorting National Championships. For Thursday and Friday, carnival opens at 6 - closes at 9. Wristbands for unlimited rides for those nights are $20 - must be 36” tall to buy wristband. For Saturday, the prices are $20 for 22 tickets. The rides are either 3 or 4 tickets. They will open at 10 and close when crowd is gone. They will not be open on Sunday.

INTERESTING NOTES ON GROESBECK & LIMESTONE COUNTY

Limestone County was organized as a county in 1846. The Limestone County area is historically known for the settlement of the Parker’s Fort area. Parker’s Fort is now known for Fort Parker or Old Fort Parker. On May 19, 1846, Parker’s Fort was attacked by a band of Comanche and Kiowa Indians. Many of the settlers escaped. Those killed were buried in a communal grave in a nearby area. That area is now Fort Parker Memorial Park. A large marker is placed at the gravesite of those killed at Parker’s Fort. The famed Cynthia Ann Parker was captured by the Indians. She was about 9 years old at the time. Her son, Chief Quanah Parker, is known as the last chief of the Comanche Indians. A monument honoring Cynthia Ann and her parents is located in Fort

Park Memorial Park. Springfield was the first county seat of Limestone County. Springfield is near

the Navasota River. The town was located near the present-day Fort Parker State Park. In fact, the old

Springfield Cemetery is in the boundaries of Fort Parker State Park. When the railroads came to this area, the Houston & Texas Central Railroad by-passed Springfield. This caused the population of this town to decline. The county government was moved to Groesbeck in December of 1873. Four courthouses were built in Springfield, and two of these buildings burned. The coming of the railroad brought the creation of Groesbeck, Thornton, Kosse, and to some degree Mexia. The railroad greatly affected the beginnings of these towns. Groesbeck was dedicated on Feb. 20, 1871. The town was named for Abraham Groesbeeck, a director of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad. The postal service changed the name to just Groesbeck by dropping one of the e’s. This change

Four courthouses have been built in Groesbeck with one of them being destroyed by fire. The present courthouse was built in 1924 and is considered one of the most attractive courthouses in the State. Groesbeck has a very beautiful city park and located in the city park is the Groesbeck Municipal Swimming Pool which was built in 1924. This swimming pool is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, municipal swimming pools in Texas. Over the years, the City of Groesbeck has kept the pool and park in very

good condition. Mexia is the largest town in Limestone County, and it has had a very interesting history including its oil boom history. During World War II Mexia was the home of a German Prisoner of War Camp. After the camp disbanded. The campus became the home of the Mexia State School, now the Mexia State Supported Living Center. The cities of Thornton and Kosse in south Limestone County have very interesting histories. Kosse experienced a brief oil boom in the 1920s. The city of Coolidge in northwestern Limestone County has a very interesting

history. Tehuacana in the northern part of Limestone County also has a very interesting history. Tehuacana was the home of Westminster College. The college closed in 1950, but buildings on the historic campus are still there. Tehuacana was the original home of Trinity University which is now located in San Antonio. Trinity is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. It is understood that observance at its original home in Tehuacana may be held later this year. Limestone County has many interesting communities and attractions. Various crops and cattle are raised in the county.

Lake Limestone was built in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The lake has become a very popular attraction with many nice lake homes located at various points on the lake. Attractions in the county include Lake Limestone, Fort Parker State Park and lake, Lake Mexia, Old Fort Parker, the Confederate Reunion Grounds, and the Limestone County Historical Museum in Groesbeck. Both Groesbeck and Mexia have excellent municipal libraries. One of the county’s biggest attractions in the summer is going to the Point Enterprise community and buying some delicious Point Enterprise peaches.
