Local churches Here’s a look at
what’s happening at a few churches in the area Peniel United Methodist Church Founded in 1891, Peniel United Methodist Church has served several generations of families and the surrounding community for 128 years. The name, “Peniel” comes from Genesis: 32:30 – So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” Although we are a small country church, our various ministries impact the county at large. From supplying local children with back packs and year round school supplies to winter coats and warm clothing, we strive to bring help and comfort to those in need. Our congregation donates food and supplies weekly to the Clay County Emergency Food Pantry. Some of our members also assist by volunteering their time and skills at the facility on a daily basis. Home in Lebanon, Indiana with financial donations. Soft “huggable” bears are donated semi-annually to Intrepid Hospice to help bring comfort to the terminally ill. These are just a few of the ways our congregation shows their love and service for others. Peniel UMC provides Sunday School classes for all age groups and enjoys an active traditional choir. Seasonal crafts with a focus on faith, are provided for the youngsters. In the summer, our Vacation Bible School is open to BOTH children and adults! Many fellowship opportunities are available throughout the year with Family Nights, Ladies Advent Tea, Banquets, our Christmas Program, Easter Sunrise Service and Breakfast. Many of our members are active in the Town & Country United Methodist Men. This year, a new women’s group has been formed (P.O.P.) which focuses on both fellowship and outreach ministries. In October, Peniel hosts a great Trunk or Treat event; in the Spring a huge Easter Egg Hunt. In August 2018, Peniel welcomed our new Pastor, Kent Beckman and his wife, Kathy. Our Worship Service begins at 11:00 a.m. We offer a traditional worship service with the celebration of Holy Communion the first Sunday of each month. Pastor Kent provides engaging Children’s Moments which delight, teach and sometimes challenge both Pastor and the children! Come share the joy

First Baptist Church Are you tired of sitting and watching life on a screen after over a year of COVID? Ready to be more than a spectator at church? Come and be a participant in changing your community at First Baptist Church of Brazil. First Baptist holds all the usual services: Sunday School, Sunday Morning Worship, multiple Bible studies, children and youth groups, and Vacation Bible School. But we have become known for our community involvement. The Children’s Clothes Closet provides free clothing for children from birth through high school. CRADLES of Clay County operates a childcare facility for young parents who need to complete their education. The Clay County Youth Food Program prepares backpacks with food for weekends during the school year and weekly bundles during the summer. And we have served a community Thanksgiving meal for well over thirty years. First Baptist Church began in 1897. It is an American Baptist Church. We held the first service at our present location on November 22, 1908. The current pastor is the Rev. Dr. Quentin Madden who was called to the church in the summer 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. Asked what it was like to come during that time, Pastor Quentin said, “I’m a people person and I really enjoy getting to know people in homes and going out to eat and spending time with the people I’m going to serve, and I didn’t have as much opportunity to do that. We’ve been able to make do with what we had during the pandemic. I’m looking forward to getting out of it and moving in a new direction.” “We’re at a place where we’re looking at the future and I’m excited about that. Some good planning is currently underway to help make the future bright, for helping people come to Christ and also grow in Christ. We’ve got quite a few visitors coming in. And continuing on with our great ministry that’s visual and electronic. We’re reaching 7-800 views to our worship
service.” Five years from now, the pastor would like to see the church continuing to expand in its social ministry as well as to nurture and develop new disciples for Christ. “I anticipate we will have a stronger children and youth program, a stronger program for couples... I would like to see more small groups...both in support groups and discipleship groups... First Baptist is a light
6 to this community. People are drawn to come and be a part of this church because of its history and I think they’re excited about what the future holds.” Because of COVID the pastor has not been able to be involved beyond the church walls as he had hoped. Pastor Quentin’s message to Brazil is, “I look forward to getting to know people in the community, being involved in some of the other activities, some of the other ways of gathering, more involvement with the spiritual community and how we can work with others. I think we can do more together than we can do apart. So, I’d like to see us look to ways we can develop relationships with other churches and other ministries that exist. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. There are some good things going on and so I see myself trying to get more involved in the community in that way.” Sound like the church for you? Everyone deserves a second chance in life and through the study of God’s word and with the help of loving and caring people this is made possible. Wednesday Night Bible study is held in our Fellowship Hall at 6:30 pm. Our Bible studies are done in a very relaxed way. We first study God’s word and then we have open discussions where we share our thoughts and feelings and ask questions so that we can find answers to the things that we do not understand. We invite you to come and join us in our Worship Service and our Bible Study. You will always find a friend here, and you will enjoy the messages that Pastor Holley shares with us each Sunday. Today is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. The Jackson Street Wesleyan Church is located at 701 West Jackson Street and has been at this location since 1968. The Church was built in 1955 and for many years was the Brazil Pilgrim Holiness Church until 1968 when they merged with the Wesleyan Church and was named the Jackson Street Wesleyan Church. Dennis Holley has been serving as our Pastor since the retirement of our former Pastor Estel Stewart on December 31, 2015. Dennis Holley was confirmed as our Pastor on September 11, 2016.vPastor Holley is a Born Again Christian who has been called by God into the ministry to lead His people to Salvation. When asked what his goals are for our church, Pastor Holley said “I want our church to be seen as a light house on the corner. A place where people can find help when they need it.” Although we are a church that is smaller in numbers, we are a church that is big in the Spirit of God’s Love. Prairie City United Methodist Church Prairie City United Methodist Church is a small church with a big embrace. Right alongside State Road 42 just a mile east of State Road 59, you’re welcome to come and visit any Sunday morning for worship at 10:30 a.m., or perhaps you might drop by at 9:30 a.m. for coffee, Sunday School and some homemade cookies. First organized in 1896, our congregation has deep roots in Clay County, and some of our members are descendants of those original pioneering souls who first built the structure, while many are newer members who enjoy the fellowship of a small church. Our congregation actively shares services with our fellows throughout the community. You’ll find our minister, Rev. John Pierce, to be a neighborly pastor with genuine interest in your whole family.
Grace Chapel Grace Chapel of Brazil, attracting families of all ages, is led by two equally dynamic pastors and a host of enthusiastic ministry leaders. The Bible is clearly taught each Sunday book by book, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse which helps each attendee to grow spiritually. Bibles or phones with Bible apps are strongly encouraged to be used during the sermon in addition to having it projected overhead. The praise band is instrumental in helping the congregation in lifting the Lord’s name through joyful praise music. There is something for everyone from Wednesday prayer meeting to children’s ministry, women’s and men’s ministries, media team, safety team, and fellowship. One of things that is apparent that young and seasoned adults share leadership in different ministries as mentorship is highly encouraged. Christian Youth Camp is a favorite event each year providing fun Bible learning and fellowship among the children and youth. This non-denominational church continues to grow as the church plans to extend its building to accommodate a growing children’s ministry. Grace Chapel hosts Emmaus Christian gatherings each year and encourages members to attend this local and international weekend discipleship retreat organized through the Upper Room. 7 First Presbyterian Church of Brazil If it is Sunday evening, you are hungry, in need of a meal, then First Presbyterian Church of Brazil Indiana might just provide the answer. For 2 1/2 years, rain and shine, no matter how the holidays might fall - First Presbyterian Church has served a Sunday evening dinner open to all members of the community. The idea to provide these meals originated with one member, Kelsey Trout. With the assistance of her sister, Ally Wegner, the concept was presented to the pastor and the church governing board. There was a huge “Yes” from everyone. On January 15, 2017 the church had its first Sunday Supper and has not looked back. To date they have provided over 10,000 meals. Each meal offers an entree, vegetable, dessert, and a drink. People of all ages are present on a typical Sunday evening. Folks come and enjoy both the meals and the fellowship. Relationships have formed between the volunteer servers and those who come to eat. The meals are a time to “check in”. Funding for the meals comes primarily from the church members. However, others (outside the church membership) have also provided funds and volunteer hours. St. John’s United Church of Christ (joined by their pastor Lee Reberger) plays a regular role in the ministry. Volunteers speak of the deep satisfaction they feel as they give back to their community through the Sunday Suppers. The people of First Presbyterian Church are pleased to express their faith in this tangible way.
Berea Christian Church In 1892 God decided to use a small group of dedicated followers to plant a church just outside of Brazil on the southwest side of town. God has remained faithful to Berea to this day! Berea Christian Church exists to share the good news of Jesus, His life, His ministry, His death, burial and resurrection with those in our community and across the world. Our mission is to love people one step closer to Jesus. It is impossible to count the ways that this mission could be fulfilled. The love of Jesus can express itself in the simplest of ways. We pray that those that call Berea home will be compelled by the love of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:14) to meet people where they are. To hear their story and to share our own as we begin relationships that start loving people down the path to a relationship with Jesus. If you are new to the area and looking for a church home, it would be an honor for you to visit us on a

He will change your life for all eternity. Berea Christian Church Staff Lead Pastor Kris Howell Kris came to Berea in July of 2018. He and his wife Kristen have been married for 23 years and have 4 children Kailey, Kourtney, Korey and Kinley. Kris has been serving full time in ministry for the past 13 years. He has a passion to hear people’s stories and to listen for what they are passionate about in life. He is a graduate of DePauw University and has a Master’s Degree from Cincinnati Christian University. His family prays that you will connect to Berea as quickly as they did. On the first Sunday they visited one of Kris’ daughters PRUDENCE told him “this feels like home”. Little did they know that just a few weeks later God would call them here and now Berea is their new home. We hope you will make it yours as well. Worship Minister Prudence Bickhaus Martin A native of Quincy, IL, Prudence became enamored with music at a very young age and quickly understood that for her, music and God were nearly inseparable. Shortly after receiving her Bachelors in Worship Ministry from Lincoln Christian University, she made the transition from one corn field to the next and began calling Brazil – and Berea – her new home. As the worship minister, she spends her time planning and preparing for services and connecting with the people of the church. Her hope is that the creative elements of the services will help people to engage with scripture and respond to God in new and thought-provoking ways. She is a teacher at heart and is incredibly passionate about helping the congregation of Berea explore and learn what it truly means to worship. Service times 9:15 and 11:00

9 try, Prayer for schools, Caring Ministry, Open Hands Preschool, Habitat for Humanity, College Scholarship programs, as well as local and international missions. Additionally, our building serves as a meeting site for some combined church services like Good Friday, and hosting location for various local service clubs and organizations in or community. We are also sometimes streaming live for special programs and offer recordings of our Sunday worship services accessible by the internet. Sunday morning services are live streamed and uploaded to our YouTube.com channel “Brazil First United Methodist Church” immediately after our Sunday Service. The pulse of BFUMC is the people involved in these missions and ministries. Involvement in our local community is an area of extreme interest and passion. Jesus demonstrated unconditional love for each person who he encountered. We hope to live out His examples as we serve in the community. Our missions reach much further from Brazil, Indiana. In 2017 our mission team traveled to Uganda, joining a larger mission team working in schools, orphanages, churches, farming communities and medical clinics. In 2018 we explored the many opportunities available in serving with Mission Guatemala. In March of 2019 we sent a team of eleven who joined a group from a Methodist church from Bloomington. In 2020 we were planning to have a team leaving for Uganda in July and a team returning to Guatemala in October but due to COVID those did not happen. North Meridian Church of Christ Harmony seems far from reality in our families and churches. Romans 12:15 (NKJV) “ Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” Many of our brothers and sisters are weeping and too many Christians are ignoring those cries. Harmony is missing! Let us sit with those who are hurting-emotionally and spiritually. Let us take time to listen and understand. Let us not be like Job’s friends who with their words caused more distress. We need to pray to God for wisdom and understanding to know when to speak and when to simply listen. We need to truly examine ourselves, our opinions and our biases. We need to seek to understand their thinking, it may not be wrong- just a different perspective. A group of people will not see an event or accident exactly the same. We need to stop pointing fingers and become a comfort to each other. We need to ignore the narratives of our Satan controlled culture and listen to Jesus culture. Philippians 2:3-5 (NKJV) “…., but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”
