Endless hours of inactivity inside and free choice to high carbohydrate dry cat food often results in pet cats becoming obese. Obese cats are much more likely to develop diabetes and arthritis compared to their lean counterparts. Obese cats may lose significant amounts of weight if converted to canned diets as wet food is much lower in carbohydrates than dry kibble.

By : Thomas Waggoner Hello everyone! This month I found some interesting Fun Facts about the African American community of Galveston. Albert Fease Cafe’ - Albert Fease was born on March 8, 1911. In the early 1950s Fease opened the Albert Fease Café at 2820 Avenue R ½. A short time later the business moved to 2812 R ½, and in 1955, changed the name, to the Jambalaya Café. Fease left his mark on the history of Galveston Island through his extensive involvement with community events. FUN FACT: Fease also owned and operated the Sinclair Service station at 2902 Seawall Boulevard. Arthur Johnson - March 31, 1878 is the day when John Arthur Johnson was born. He was nicknamed the “Galveston Giant”. He was an American boxer. Fun Fact: He was the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908–1915).
Galveston’s 1st integrated Firehouse - In 1957, Star State Company No. 3 became the first firehouse in Galveston to integrate. The city continued to use the building as a fire station until it was decommissioned in the 1960s. Fun Fact: Genoice Walker, Lucious Pope, and Leroy Small were hired in 1957 becoming the first firehouse in the city to integrate with African American firemen. Norris Wright Cuney - Norris Wright Cuney was born in 1846. During the Civil War, Cuney traveled around the United States for several years. He eventually settled in Galveston where he studied law and became a well-known figure in Texas and at the national level. Fun Fact: He was the first African American Grand Master of the Prince Hall Masons in Texas from 1875 to 1877. Another Fun Fact: In 1882, Cuney became special inspector of customs at Galveston and eventually collector of customs for the port in 1889.
Middle Passage Slave Trade - Nearly 12 million Africans were involved in the Middle Passage of the transatlantic human trade. Galveston’s African American Heritage Committee in partnership with the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project (MPCPMP) joined together in 2017. Fun Fact: These people are honored with a special Middle Passage Marker. Be sure to check out the Galveston Historical Society. They have more about the island’s rich history. The Galveston Historical Society formed in 1871 and merged with a new organization formed in 1954 as a non-profit entity devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Remember, if you want to have your fun fact researched, please send your question to PO Box 612, New Caney, TX 77357. See everyone next month!

PET PEEVES
Of The Month
Using Our Bank Debit Card
People often ask us how in the world do we come up with a Pet Peeve each and every month. The answer is quite simple, we don’t have to look, something always happens that brings the Peeve right to us. Remember when using our bank debit card was very simple, quick, and convenient? So much better than carrying around our checkbook and going through the hassle of verifying all of our personal information each and every time we wanted to pay for something at a store. At one time, using our bank debit card was so convenient and easy. We entered our four-digit pin number, got our receipt, and headed out the door. A wonderful way for us to pay for our goods and services. Well, that has sure changed. Now when you slide your card into the card machine, the barrage of questions begins. First, it’s the cashier that slows us down by asking if we would like to save 10% today by applying for their store credit card. Our answer is no. That’s why we inserted our card into the machine. Then a question from the machine. Is this a debit card or a credit card? Step two. Then comes the, is the amount correct question? Well, duh, if it wasn’t our guess is we wouldn’t have slid our card into the machine. The third step in the process.
Step eight. Would we like our receipt printed, emailed, or both? Step nine. This is one that really gets to us. The cashier asks for our phone number? Why do they want this? Are they going to call us and ask us out on a date? Take us to dinner maybe? We actually know it’s for your store to be able to barrage us with emails several times a day. Step ten. We actually get our receipt and the process of using our debit card has mercifully ended. Don’t know if we should be kissed goodbye or not. It seems like we have been in this line long enough to have established a personal relationship. Do we like it when we have to answer the constant barrage of questions in order to pay for our service or merchandise with our debit card?
NO! WE DON’T LIKE THAT! Let’s go back to using the KISS method. KISS stands for Keep It Simple Stupid. Let us enter our pin number, give us our receipt, and get us out of your line. There are many other things we would rather be doing.
Would we like to donate to a certain cause the store is pushing? Would we like to round up our change? Yes or No. That probably depends on what that particular cause is. If it’s for the one-legged, orphan kangaroos in Australia, our answer is probably no. Step four. Would we like any cash back? Step five. The questions just keep coming and coming. Finally, if it’s our lucky day, we are asked to enter our pin number. Step six. Many times, either the machine or the cashier will ask for our zip code. That makes seven steps and counting. Have a Pet Peeve ? Contact us at www.WavesGalveston.com and tell us about it. We just may use yours next month! 24

Restoring Youthful Facial Dimensions
MEET DR. TARA WEGRYN
BY: DR. TARA WEGRYN
Ideal Facial Dimensions
The concept of ideal facial dimensions has existed for thousands of years and remains relevant in modern times. And although we all know a beautiful face when we see it, attempts to quantify the ideal facial proportions can be downright humorous. For example, did you know that the ideal face should be equal to the length of three noses, and that the space between the eyes should be the width of one eye? Additionally, according to BBC News, the distance between a woman’s eyes and her mouth should be over a third of the overall length of her face. Who knew?
The Triangle of Youth
The youthful face has specific dimensions and proportions too, particularly when compared to the older face. Commonly referred to as the Triangle of Youth, the weight of the youthful face is at the top of the face, with full cheeks, high cheek bones, and full temples. These pleasing youthful proportions can change over the years leading to an Inverted Triangle with the weight of the face at the bottom rather than the top. Many factors contribute to this including the effects of gravity on muscle and skin, loss of collagen and elastin, and, what we will address below, loss of fat pads, particularly in the cheeks and temples. But what can be done?
Treating the Hollow
Dermal fillers can be used to add volume to the temples and midface and restore the Triangle of Youth. Restoring volume to these areas can eliminate hollow temples, accentuate cheek bones, and lift the face thereby reducing wrinkles and folds even in the lower face.
Safety Consideration
Dermal fillers can be safely added to the temples and cheeks in the office. The procedure can usually be performed with minimal discomfort after the application of a topical anesthetic and typically takes less than 30 minutes. Use of a blunt cannula in the temple region can reduce the risk of bleeding or bruising. Results are immediate and can last up to two years if a long-lasting hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvéderm Voluma® is used. So, if you have lost volume in your cheeks, or your temples appear a bit hollow, a little dermal filler can help restore an attractive, aesthetic proportion to your face and help create a more youthful you!
Have a great day, and I hope you continue to

ESTAURANT EVIEW By: Tom Valliere & Charlie Bresenhan
Highlighting Galveston’s Best of the Best Dining Experiences. Nestled on a corner lot and surrounded by an oyster shell paved parking lot, Gilhooley’s has all the charm of a rundown bait camp. Creaky floors and a decor of old license plates and other flotsam and jetsam line the walls along with what other non-edibles may have been found in the net. This is old time Texas, so the cigarette smoke can get intense and the wait staff could have stood in for the old Mel’s cafe TV series. In all there is a friendly “down home” feel to the whole setting.
G
An assortment of workers, fishermen and local “characters” share bar stools and tables with businessmen and tourists. Indoor dining is supplemented with outdoor patio and picnic seating. Soft music and shade trees set the mood for a lazy summer afternoon. What you will not see are children. This is an adult only establishment, and they strictly enforce their “no one under eighteen rule!”
Some of the best cooking and flavor combinations of this seafood bounty come from the small fishing community of San Leon. Just a short hop across the causeway from Galveston Island, this sparsely settled area has several restaurants worth the short drive. Foremost among them is Gilhooley’s.
As colorful as the settings and people may be, the real attraction here is the food. Renowned for their oysters, they have a close working relationship with the area’s largest owner and harvester of oyster leases ensuring a steady supply of premium bivalves. Served raw and on the half shell or grilled and fried several ways, they bring daily crowds of patrons who can never get enough. A perennial favorite are the Oysters Gilhooley. Succulent oysters grilled over a pecan and oak fire and drenched in butter and parmesan. They cannot be described - they must be tasted. Oysters Picante will kick your taste buds up a notch. Or even a plate of cornmeal drenched and fried they are always hot fresh and delicious.
alveston County boasts some of the finest seafood in the nation. Strategically located on the Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Bay, we have access to some of the freshest seafood available anywhere. With a Spanish, Cajun, and Creole heritage, augmented by Italian and German immigration in the 19th century, our recipes and flavor combinations rival any other regions in the Southeast!
Gilhooley’s is much more than oysters. Their extensive menu features other treasures from the bay. Fresh plump shrimp

Gilhooley’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar either boiled and “peel and eat” or fried up golden are always a treat. Fresh flounder, southern style catfish, and an array of delicious Po’boy sandwiches. Land lubbers can fill up on chicken fried steak, hamburgers, hot dogs, chili and even a smattering of Tex- Mex dishes round out the menu. Cajun gumbos and smoked boudin are always popular. They also have daily lunch specials and soups that bring in the noon-time crowds. You can always find something, and the portions are huge so you will not leave hungry! A full-service bar will help you wash it all down. Just remember the things they don’t have. No kids, no credit cards, and no pets. Hours Of Operation: 11:00AM to 10:00PM 7 days

Restaurant Spotlight:

T
By: Tom Valliere & Charlie Bresenhan
his month our spotlight falls upon Sherry Smith, owner and operator of Miller’s Seawall Grill. I very much enjoy my work as the Food Editor for Waves Magazine. For the past couple of years, it has allowed me a privileged look inside the culinary scene in Galveston and the surrounding area as well as afforded me the opportunity to meet some remarkably talented people that I would otherwise have never met. Many of these folks I admire and call friends. One of these is Sherry Smith. Originally from South Dakota, you can still hear the Midwestern accent in her voice. She came to Texas in 1983 and quickly found employment with Don Clarke and David LeBoufe, longtime restaurateurs in Galveston and Brazoria counties. Settling into her new life and career in Texas, Sherry married Bennie Smith in 1986 and started a family, producing three lovely
44

children: Joey, Justin, and Cassidy Smith. Striking out on her own, Sherry opened her first cafe in 1996, Sherry’s Alta Loma Café, and later opened Sherry’s Busy Bee Cafe. With the success of those two restaurants behind her, Sherry returned to work for Don and David in early 2011 as manager of Miller’s Seawall Grill in Galveston and finally purchasing the restaurant in May of 2020. I do not think you could find a more challenging time for a restaurant than the past year. Through all of the closures and limited occupancy brought on by the COVID pandemic, storms in the Gulf, and a severe late spring freeze and power blackout, Sherry has managed with limited food supplies, labor shortages, and the everyday challenges of operating a business in a tourist city with a nonlinear revenue stream. A commitment to her employees
Miller’s Seawall Grill and our community has helped her resist the negative forces and emerge better and stronger than ever. Always ready to assist, Sherry has provided meals to first responders and others in need. Miller’s has a legacy of caring for their employees, even keeping them on the payroll for months as they recovered from a devastating kitchen fire. All of this pays off in teamwork, camaraderie, and loyalty very few restaurants can claim. The atmosphere is positive and charged with energy. The wait staff is friendly and efficient, and the food is uniform and consistently delicious. None of this happens by chance. Organizations are led from the top and take on a culture that can be positive or toxic. To Sherry’s credit, the atmosphere at Miller’s is positive, morale is high and the longtime employees and lack of turnover is a tribute to her managerial skills. What are the results of all this effort? Let’s start with the numerous awards the restaurant has received including many awarded through the General Mills Neighborhood to National food contests, the thousands of positive reviews posted on social media, the universal recommendations to visitors to eat there, and most importantly, the daily long lines of customers willing to wait to enjoy the large menu and daily specials. Drop by and see why so many line up. Stop and say hello to Sherry. She always has a big smile and time for her customers.

Walk a Mile in Your Own Shoes these days, and this is a problem.
Hippocrates, known as “The Father of Modern Medicine,” had it right even 2,400 years ago when he said, “Walking is man’s best medicine.” Our hominin ancestors walked many miles daily to gather basic necessities such as food and water. We also used to physically carry all of our belongings wherever we went, strengthening our core and leg muscles. Yes, industrial and technological developments have led to remarkable changes in our standard of living, but this came at the cost of humans losing most of their primal physical abilities and strength, such as walking long distances. Walking is, in essence, the most essential functional exercise we do. Many people barely walk anywhere
48
WAV E S M A G A Z I N E | M AY 2 0 2 1
There is no shortage of scientific research to back up the effectiveness of adding walking to your daily life. Some benefits of walking daily include: extending your life, improving blood circulation, promoting weight loss, reducing risk for cancer and chronic disease, elevating your mood, strengthening your muscles and joints, improving sleep, improving breathing, slowing mental decline, and maintaining mobility longer in your life. Walking doesn’t have to be vigorous or done for long periods to improve your health. Walking is low impact, requires minimal equipment, can be done at any time of day, and can be performed at your own pace. You can get out and walk without worrying about the risks associated with some more vigorous forms of exercise. Walking is also a great form of physical activity for people who are overweight, elderly, or who haven’t exercised in a long time. To get the health benefits of walking, try to walk for at least 30 minutes as briskly as you can on most days of
the week. ‘Brisk’ means that you can still talk but not sing, and you may be puffing slightly. Moderate activities such as walking pose little health risk but, if you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program of physical activity. If it’s too difficult to walk for 30 minutes at one time, do regular small bouts (10 minutes) three times per day and gradually build up to longer sessions. However, if your goal is to lose weight, you will need to do physical activity for longer than 30 minutes each day. You can still achieve this by starting with smaller bouts of activity throughout the day and increasing these as your fitness improves. Use either your watch, smartphone, or pedometer to track how many steps you do daily, with the goal of hitting 10,000 steps. The best way to begin is to warm up slowly. Start each walk at a leisurely pace to give your muscles time to warm up, and then pick up the speed. Afterward, gently stretch your leg muscles – particularly your calves and front and back thighs. Stretches
should be held for about 20 seconds. If you feel any pain, ease off the stretch. Don’t bounce or jolt, or you could overstretch muscle tissue and cause microscopic tears, which lead to muscle stiffness and tenderness. It’s best to dress lightly when you walk. Dressing too warmly can increase sweating and build up body temperature, making you uncomfortable during a walk. Proper footwear is important when you begin your walking routine. The wrong type of shoe or walking action can cause foot or shin pain, blisters, and injuries to soft tissue. Ensure your shoes are comfortable, with appropriate heel and arch supports, and designed for walking. Take light, easy steps and make sure your heel touches down before your toes.
Make walking a pleasure! Vary where you walk, so you don’t get tired of seeing the same sights. Walk your dog! They will love being outside with you, and it’s great for their health as well. Walk with friends. Ask neighbors or friends if they would like to join you on your walks. Many a world problem has been solved during walks with friends. Join a walking club. Peer accountability goes a long way to keep you on the right walking routine. Make walking interesting. Walk at various times of the day. The sights to see first thing in the morning are bound to be different from those of the afternoon or early evening. Explore what’s going on around you, notice the sky, the people, the sounds. Our seawall is full of exciting sights! Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, and water.
There is so much good that can come from just putting one foot in front of the other on a regular, purposeful basis. Incorporating walking into your daily routine is really a game-changer in terms of both mental and physical benefits. So, reach back and get in touch with your inner Neanderthal and start walking every day!

REVIEW: COM STAGES THOUGHT-PROVOKING DRAMATIC COMEDY By: Paul Hager
n the middle of the night, Eliot Pryne (Roger Stallings), professor of English Literature-specialty Shakespeare-is packing what he thinks is a suitcase and leaving what he thinks is a hotel. In the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease with the unflappable Mrs. Fleming (Missy Lane) as his nurse/caregiver, he is “taking leave” of the real world and imagining a new one, but the transition is painful. His alter-ego Young Eliot (Jase O’Brien), seen only by the audience, charts this final voyage speaking as Eliot once did when he was the leading authority on Shakespeare’s King Lear. The visitation of Eliot’s three daughters, Alma, Liz, and Cordelia, forms the central event of this oddly comic, yet fully sympathetic play. the decision - whether or not to have Father put in a “home” - provides the central conflict among the three very different sisters: the public-school counselor, Alma (Shatorey Watson); the TV actress, Liz (Zion Luerson); and the ne’er-do-well vagabond, Cordelia (Jada Wise), who arrives in her black leather motorcycle outfit fresh from a year in Paris and a history of drug abuse. As in Shakespeare’s play, it is the young Cordelia who assumes responsibility for her father and leaves us with the bittersweet realization that, while all will not be well, Eliot’s taking leave will be a gentle one. First produced at the Denver Center Theatre Company in1998, its publicity release stated “Filled with the often-farcical behavior that goes along with this disease and decorated with “good talk” from the literate professor and his daughters, this play had packed houses at the
50
WAV E S M A G A Z I N E | M AY 2 0 2 1
Denver Center laughing, weeping and finally standing and cheering. As the alarming number of Alzheimer’s victims keeps growing, this play’s relevance increases daily.” COM Theatre’s production ran through April 25, 2021and the streaming version is available through May 12, 2021. I chose to ‘attend’ the streaming version of this production as it was my first time to experience ‘live’ theatre this way and wanted to share my thoughts on doing so with you. Long-time COM Theatre mainstay Roger Stallings (this was his 56th show there!) tackled the extremely challenging role of Eliot with aplomb. Having had the privilege of working with Roger at both COM and ETC, I knew to expect a layered, nuanced performance and he certainly rose to the occasion. Each of the four actors playing the three daughters and Young Eliot – all COM Theatre Majors turned in polished, poised performances, giving kudos to the training and experience they are receiving there.
Missy Lane was fine as the nurse/ caretaker, alternating between exasperation and loving understanding dealing with her charge and his family. Returning to COM for his fourth season, guest director Brian Hamlin’s skillful staging avoided the stagnation pitfall of ‘people sitting around talking’ and Curt Meyer’s scenic and lighting design enabled transitions between the ‘real’ and ‘flashback’ moments seamlessly. A hybrid of a live performance and a three-camera television taping, I enjoyed watching the show this way although not as nearly much as I would have seeing it live. If you wish to take advantage of seeing a production after it has closed, I urge you to – it’s quite easy even for those of us who are technically challenged. Just call the box office with your credit card information [it’s only $10!] and they will email you a link and password. Watch at your leisure through May 12, and support ‘live’ theatre virtually! - Paul Hager

Bum
Orgins of Familier Expressions Hi there, Wavers. Thank you for your nice comments regarding my favorite foods’ column last month. It seems that we like a lot of the same foods. Just goes to prove what your Bum has always said, you Wavers have good taste. I had a thought the other day while I was out riding around in my ol’ scarab. It’s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking... A buddy of mine recently got into an argument with a co-worker of his. He thought this person had his back over something work-related, and as it turned out, he didn’t. My friend said: “Man, did he show his true colors.” That’s what got your Bum to thinking. How did these types of expressions originate? Well, your Bum did a little digging, and here is what I found...
WEAR YOUR HEART ON YOUR SLEEVE In the middle ages, knights who fought at tournaments wore a token of their lady on their sleeves. Today, if you make your feelings obvious to everybody, you wear your heart on your sleeve.

STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT This phrase comes from the days when blacksmiths lifted iron objects from the furnace and hammered it. They could only hammer the object into shape while the iron was hot before it cooled down.

SCAPEGOAT In the Old Testament (Leviticus 16: 7-10) two goats were selected. One was sacrificed. The other was spared but the High Priest laid his hands on it and confessed the sins of his people. The goat was then driven into the wilderness. He was a symbolic ‘scapegoat’ for the people’s sins.
BORN WITH A SILVER SPOON IN YOUR MOUTH Your Bum missed out on this one. Once when a child was christened, it was traditional for the godparents to give a silver spoon as a gift ( if they could afford it!). However, a child born in a rich family did not have to wait. He or she had it from the start. They were ‘ born with a silver spoon in their mouth’.
BITE THE BULLET This old saying means to grin and bear a painful situation. Not a strength of your Bums. It comes from the old days before anesthetics. A soldier about to undergo an operation was given a bullet to bite down on. Ouch!

ACHILLES HEEL
SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS
One your Bum knew about. In Greek mythology, Thetis dipped her son Achilles in the mythical River Styx said to render invulnerability. However, Thetis held Achilles by his heel. Since her hand covered this part of his body the water did not touch it leaving it vulnerable. Achilles was killed when Paris of Troy fired an arrow at him hitting his heel, causing his death.
Pirate ships would approach their intended victim showing a false sense of security. When it was too late for the victim to escape, they would show their true colors, the Jolly Roger!
DON’T LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH
PEEPING TOM
This old saying means don’t examine a gift too closely! You can tell a horse’s age by looking at its teeth, which is why people ‘looked a horse in the mouth.’

At first, I guessed that this was probably about my distant cousin Thomas, but with a little research, your Bum found out differently. According to legend, a man named Leofric taxed the people of Coventry heavily. His wife, Lady Godiva, begged him not to. Leofric said he would end the tax if Lady Godiva rode through the streets of Coventry naked. So, she did just that. Peeping Tom is a much later addition to the story. Everybody in Coventry was supposed to stay indoors with his or her shutters closed to show respect for Lady Godiva and the good she was doing for the citizens of Coventry. However, Peeping Tom had a sneak look at Lady Godiva and was struck blind.

As an added measure of security to the disk, I put a small amount of two-part epoxy in the disk face at the attachment eye. either AT&T nor Verizon are involved here. This piece is about sending a message to a distant “Cobia” or “Ling.” My “Super Popper” is the part of this rigging option that does the “Calling up a Cobia.” I had used trailers behind a popper first on speckled trout well over 50 years ago and later for Kingfish and Wahoo, but didn’t relate that basic rigging to having cobia/ling applications. When approaching an offshore platform or bottom structure spot, don’t assume that the boat’s engine, prop or hull noise will bring a cobia into view, as happens on occasion. Think about it; if those noises can possibly attract a cobia -imagine the attraction of multiple casts using a big popper ahead and above suspended bait. The attraction starts with the cobia’s lateral line sensors when they convert that distant touch into a visual as it approaches the bait presentation. Large platforms or smaller ones, along with pipe rigs, are the primary target areas. Pipe rigs in particular are easier for you to be able to attract a Cobia simply because of the fact they are smaller and therefore your Cobia is closer to your popper’s attraction and bait. An important point to remember is that they all may hold Cobia. Going back to that “Super Popper”, mine are large popping plugs normally used for tuna and other near-surface feeders. I have removed both hooks, added a disk of thin, pliable plastic to its face, and spray painted it all flat, dark brown. The plastic disk increases the cupped popping face from 1-112” to 2-114” and the flat brown makes the 7” popper look sort of like a piece of driftwood. The plastic disk has

Recommended baits include Almost Alive Lures 11”, natural color, “Cobia Candy” eel, single hook rigged at mid-body. My hardest Cobia strike ever was on a deceased eel; the cobia ran like a streaking kingfish from about 25 feet away inhaling the eel. Another is the 3-D crab, 4”, by Savage Gear; last but not least is one of my longtime favorites, a pink/chartreuse Snapper Slapper 1 or 3 oz, bare or with a whole, 5-6 inch squid attached. A whole squid of 5-6 inches, body end and head hooked, is another quality cobia bait. To make your rigging come to life, cast into or just out of a platform’s legs, over a wreck or rock, and use a pop and pull retrieve. Back to the cast a moment, toward the end of the cast, slow your line, aligning the popper and trailer bait away from you for a clean entry into the water. The pop sends out its call while your bait has the look of swimming up and away and then falling or diving toward the safety of the bottom. This is what an alive and swimming prey would do. Rod tip twitched between pops also adds some life to your bait choice. Each popping motion should give a 1-2 ft. move of the popper. Repeat the procedure until you feel there’s not going to be a response and then do it thru about five more casts and popping retrieves just to make sure. Weed lines and other floating materials are also prime locations to use this popper/trailer combination. Draw a cobia from under the weed line, etc with the same pop and swim motion or cast beyond a surface cruiser and retrieve across or across and away, giving an additional chance for the cobia to give your presentation a closer took. If a kingfish like charge at your bait isn’t made but only a leisure swimming swim up, aggressive pops as it
you do a slow, rod loading motion as the cobia swims away. While that might be a shorter time than it took to read this sentence, its plenty of time for the cobia to decide to spit the bait, with a “J” hook in use that time could have already included a solid hook set. “J” hooks and cobia really do go together quite well. The results are likely to be a lot better than watching a nice cobia swim away.
approaches may speed up the swim process, resulting in a sold hookup. Speaking of a solid hookup, my hook preference is a “J” hook of whatever size works best with your bait and tackle. “J” hooks give you more rod sweep, hook set motions to use as determined by the cobia’s position in relation to you and the boat at hook set time. That means right, left, up or down rod sweeps as soon as the bait/lures hook is in its mouth or along side of its head. With a circle hook the line must come snug or tight as
In the Gulf waters, I fish for cobia out of Galveston Island. The primary times for large cobia are June to mid-October or so. In past years, sizeable cobia taken out of Galveston include several in the 75 to 80# range and the current Texas Record of over 108# and another one of 111.5# that didn’t qualify since three fishermen handled the rod. Spring is prime throughout the Gulf so now is the time to put this popper and trailer rigging to use “Calling Up A Cobia”.

Colorful Spring in the Piney Woods them, are fattened up from the winter acorns. This is my favorite time of year to fill the freezer with fresh butchered wild pork. The sounders are large right now with tons of piglets up to 200 plus pound sows and boars, all feeding together. When I slip in and find a sounder, I follow them through the woods. From there, I can pick out my target for the day that’s usually in the 80-125 lb. range to make bone-in chops, whole roasts, and tenders. The 50-75 lb. weight range is great to split down the middle and smoke in halves for pulled meat or street tacos finished on a bed of mixed peppers and onions.
S
pring is my favorite time of year to get out and enjoy the beautiful East Texas Piney Woods along the Neches River, where we escape to hunt and relax. Overnight and mornings are usually cool for my hunts, followed by warm afternoons to finish chores or cook outside. The ample rain allows the berries and wildflowers to grow which add so much vibrant color to the elevated acreage.
I will be sharing many of my wild hog recipes as we love to eat both wild hog meat and venison. When I get the chance to take someone out for their first hunt, then prepare a meal for them within 24 hours of what was harvested, it’s a special moment and bond that lasts forever. I encourage and challenge anyone that does not practice field to table to find a hunting relative or friend that can take you on your first hunt. It will be a life-changing experience for all involved.

Down at the river bottom, trees are filling out making visibility to spot animals to get a clear shot a bit more challenging than when the trees were bareback in the winter. Last week, we were able to harvest wild dewberries along the sandy logging roads and in patches near our campsite. We also hiked around locating what will be a bumper crop of wild blackberries. Vines with thousands of flowers and small green berries are plentiful this time of year and should ripen early in May. I’m hopeful for a mid-month ripening, around my birthday, so we can spend a couple of days there to harvest and freeze buckets of berries for jams, cobblers, or chutney and grill up a wild birthday dinner. Wildflowers are abundant as well, present in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Even some of the weeds look vibrant this time of year. The wild hogs, or rooters as I refer to 58

Rela t ionship Adv i ce Ad
with Jan & D e a n Dear Jan and Dean, I joined a fitness club about two years ago. I was becoming troubled that I had let myself go, so to speak. I was getting rather “lumpy” in certain areas. After a year or so of going, I kind of started to lose interest so I hired a personal trainer to keep me motivated. Well, I chose the cutest guy there. It worked. I go all the time and train with him. I must say I enjoy it. But I also have to say that I think I am enjoying him rather more than I am the workout. We have gotten close...not to the extent of seeing each other outside of the gym, but we are friends. We talk a lot and, yes, we flirt with each other and hug. When COVID-19 hit, we started doing virtual workouts. One day, my husband walked into the room and saw our workout. Yes, we were flirting and joking around. My husband was furious and accused me of cheating on him. I tried to tell him that the personal workouts kept me motivated and that we were definitely not having an affair. He didn’t buy it. He thinks I should quit the gym...NOW! I don’t want to. What do you suggest? Beatrice is Bummed
H
ello, Beatrice. You didn’t state your age in your question, but I would think you are old enough not to be so naive. Do you seriously think that you are the only female that your trainer is flirting with? Do you really think you are all that “special” to him? That you are the chosen one?
I always like to tell people to put themselves in other person’s shoes. How would you like it if your husband regularly flirted with another woman? Would you be okay with that? I doubt that you would. Why play with fire and risk your marriage unless you care nothing about it? Maybe you don’t care. I’m thinking you don’t. I don’t blame your husband for being upset about this.
W
ell, Beatrice, you didn’t ever say you loved your husband - just that you are enjoying your trainer. Do you enjoy your husband? I might add, is your husband overweight and might be jealous of your trainer and that you look better? Does your trainer feel the same as you? So many questions here. If I were you, I would evaluate your relationships with both your trainer and your husband. Do you see a future with your trainer? Do you want to stay with your husband? In my opinion, I think your trainer makes you feel young, and you enjoy your workouts with him. Who wouldn’t?! I’m sure he’s in great shape and attractive. I truly think it’s an infatuation. It happens. If I were you, I would just quit the training. And, to assure your husband even further, ask your husband to work out with you. It just might help your relationship with him.
My educated guess is that he probably flirts with most of the females that he trains. It seems like he knows how to push their buttons and keep them coming back for more business with him. Not real ethical in my opinion, but it works with you. Why wouldn’t it work with his other female trainees? Most trainers are way too professional to act the way he does with you. There is a fine line with flirting. I believe some of it can be done in a joking manner and can be harmless. Other types of flirting can cross the line. Over the line is where you seem to be, and you appear to be loving every minute of it. HAVE A QUESTION FOR JAN & DEAN? Go to wavesgalveston.com & ask away. You just might have your question answered next month. 64

eflections By: John and Kathy Valastro
When I Die I was recently watching one of my favorite shows NCIS on CBS. Season 18, episode 9. One of the characters passes away and at the very end they are reflecting on her her on life. life. One of the characters read this poem while showing several scenes. It touched me and I wanted to share. We live in such a fast-paced world and our lives can be very chaotic. We tend to lose ourselves in this chaos. When we lose a friend or family member, we take just a short amount of time to reflect or grieve, then get back to our chaotic life. When we slow down to reflect on life, there are certain feelings or emotions within us that I believe is healthy for one’s mind, body, and soul. I ask you to take a few minutes to read this poem, slowly, and insert a memory of a friend or family member you’ve lost as you go through it. Allow yourself to feel the emotions within you. You may want to do this when you are alone, because if you truly cherish the life of the one you are thinking about, you will need a Kleenex or two, and it’s worth every tear that falls. Try it.
Live each day to its fullest and love like there is no tomorrow, because eventually there will be no tomorrow. We will then question ourselves and “wonder if”; wonder if we told or showed that friend or family member if we loved them enough. Doubt can be a horrible feeling that will stay with you the rest of your life. I hope you take a second out of your chaotic life to do some of these things: to see, to touch, to cry, to smile, and to love. If you need to be touched, take time to watch NCIS SEASON 18, Episode 9. To love is easier than you think; the difficulty....is giving it away.
Here is the poem: By Merritt Malloy “When I die give what’s left of me away to children and old men that wait to die. And if you need to cry, cry for your brother or sister who walk the street beside you. And when you need me, put your arms around anyone and give them what you need to give me. I want to leave you something, something better than words or sounds. Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved, and if you cannot give me away, at least let me live in your eyes and not you mind. You can love me most by letting hands touch hands, by letting bodies touch bodies, and by letting go of children who need to be free. Love does not die, people do. So, when all that’s left of me is love...give me away”. (The end)

The Ronald McDonald House Of Galveston
Ronald McDonald House Want To Volunteer? Volunteering at the Ronald House brings a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment to those who are willing to give a few hours to perform minor but essential tasks needed in the every-day function of a home as large as this one is. Twenty bedrooms, nearly all occupied at the same time, some families staying for only a day or two while others come for much longer visits up to a month or more in some cases. If you have special skills, training, hobbies or speak any foreign languages, please come share with us…can you lead a group in singing along with your musical talent…can you teach the children to speak a few words or sing a song in your native or learned language…do you know a special dance (think “chicken dance” or the “cha-cha-cha” or “folklorico”) all children love to sing and dance. Karaoke is a favorite if you own a machine! Duties that need to be done on a daily basis include acting as a receptionist and answering phone calls, preparation of rooms for incoming families, helping in the business office, cooking and baking, playing Bingo and hosting family activities as well as providing “arts and crafts” sessions. Host a party! Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter, Birthdays…etc. We are always seeking friendly, energetic and creative volunteers…let that be you!
