In all the years I’ve been in the newspaper industry, never has a health magazine been so important or carried as much weight as it does now. And I’m not speaking about our health magazine, I mean anything about health in general right now. It took a pandemic for everyone to realize just how unhealthy and unsanitary some of us can be. We think about things we never thought of before. We notice things now that we never noticed before. Shaking hands, touching our face and mouth after touching incredibly dirty things, these were things most of us never gave a second thought to. But now, we are hyper-vigilant about these things and that may be the one and only good thing that has come out of this entire pandemic. I myself have had to think before putting my hand out to shake someone’s hand. As a lifelong salesman, I’ve been shaking hands and kissing babies, like politicians would say, and now I usually ask permission before putting my hand out and that’s a really weird feeling. I almost feel like I’m being rude by not extending my hand. But I’m usually met with a nice handshake, a fist bump or an elbow. Either way, people have been wonderful about it and to use a term that a very close friend of mine despises, “I guess it’s the new normal.” I want everyone out there to stay safe, stay healthy and don’t be political, just be smart! Your family, your friends and your community will appreciate you for it. Please enjoy this year’s edition of, Your Health 2021.

Eat and Drink Your Way to Daily Wellness
Healthline, clean eating and the addition of a small amount of apple cider vinegar to your daily routine can help support healthy digestion, weight range maintenance, healthy glucose levels and a functioning immune system. In fact, some experts recommend consuming 1 ounce of apple cider vinegar each day as a shot or part of a recipe. Consider an apple cider vinegar option from Marukan, which has brewed premium vinegars for 370 years, to create dishes from breakfast to dinner.

The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the family of Patrick Barnes. He died at the age of 33 of complications of ITP. Like many families you see every day who go through this kind of horrific loss, the Barnes family wanted to find a way to turn their grief into something positive and do something that would honor the very special man Patrick was. Over a dinner right after Pat’s death, they came up with DAISY – an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. As they brainstormed what The DAISY Foundation would do, they kept coming back to the one positive thing they held on to during Pat’s 8 week illness: the amazing care he – and all the family – received from Pat’s nurses, even when he was completely sedated. The family was so impressed by the clinical care Pat’s nurses provided, and they were overwhelmed by the level of compassion and kindness that his nurses brought to Pat’s bedside day in and day out. The family came to understand that the communication and attention being paid to Pat was a very important part of the clinical care nurses provide. Because of their experience, The Barnes Family believes that nurses are unsung heroes of our society who deserve far more recognition and honor than they receive. They decided to find a way to say thank you to nurses. So Pat’s wife, Tena, his parents, Bonnie and Mark and other family members created The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. There are now 2,000 healthcare facilities in fifteen countries committed to honoring their nurses with The DAISY Award. Kristi Couch, RN, Nursery Department CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System started the DAISY program in early 2011. The award is presented quarterly to the ONE best nomination, as chosen by a panel of direct care nurses from each of our seven sites. All nominations are blinded, so no one knows who has been nominated until after the winner is chosen. The winner for this quarter is Kristi Couch, RN, in our nursery department.

Things to Know About GMOs “GMO” is a common term used to describe foods that have been created through genetic engineering. A GMO (genetically modified organism) is a plant, animal or microorganism that has had its genetic material (DNA) changed using technology that generally involves the transfer of specific DNA from one organism to another. Although GMO foods are widely available to consumers, there is sometimes confusion around what GMOs are and how they are used in the United States’ food supply. As part of the Feed Your Mind education initiative, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides science-based informa-

You may have heard of “GMO” foods before, but what you may not know is the science and purpose behind them.
tion to help consumers better understand GMOs: 1.Only a few types of GMO foods are sold in the United States. Soybeans, cotton, corn, alfalfa, apples, canola, papaya, potatoes, summer squash, sugar beets, pineapple and AquAdvantage salmon complete the list of GMO foods currently sold in the U.S. Only a few of these are available in the produce sections of grocery stores. Most are instead used to make ingredients that are then used in other food products like cereals and snack chips. 2. GMOs can help farmers grow crops that are resistant to diseases and insects. Humans have used tradi-

tional ways to modify crops and animals to suit their needs and tastes for more than 10,000 years. Genetic engineering lets scientists take a beneficial gene, like insect resistance, and transfer it into a plant. Results can include higher crop yields, less crop loss, longer storage life, better appearance, better nutrition or some combination of these traits. 3. GMO foods are as safe to eat as their non-GMO counterparts. The FDA, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Agriculture work together to make sure GMOs are safe for human, plant and animal health. GMO foods are carefully studied before being sold to the public to make sure they are safe. Some GMO plants have even been modified to improve their nutritional value. For example, some GMO soybeans contain healthier oils, which can replace oils containing trans fat. 4. GMO foods are no more likely to cause allergies than non-GMOs. You will not be allergic to a GMO food unless you’re allergic to the non-GMO version of that food. For example, if you’re not allergic to foods made with non-GMO soy, you won’t be allergic to foods made with GMO soy. When developing GMOs, scientists run tests to make sure allergens aren’t transferred from one food to another. 5. GMOs can reduce farmers’ use of pesticides. Some GMO plants contain plant-incorporated protectants to make them resistant to insects. This lowers farmers’ need for and use of spray pesticides. 6. A “bioengineered” disclosure will be on some of the foods you eat. The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard requires bioengineered foods to be labeled by 2022 with text on the packages that reads “bioengineered food,” the bioengineered food symbol or directions for using your phone to find the disclosure. Sometimes the terms “bioengineered,” “GMO” and “genetic engineering” are used interchangeably, but labels required under the Standard use the term “bioengineered.”

Heart Health
causing a blockage to form, and when an artery becomes fully blocked, blood flow is restricted. Blocked blood flow to the heart causes a heart attack while blocked blood flow to the brain causes a stroke. Managing Risk Factors The most effective way to prevent CVD is to understand and address risk factors. Triglycerides play an important role in heart health. Triglycerides store unused calories to give your body energy and are the most common type of fat in the body. They come from foods you eat such as butter, oils and other fats, as well as carbohydrates, sugars and alcohol. Your diet, lack of exercise, medical conditions, certain drugs and genetics can all cause high triglycerides.
On average, someone in the United States dies from cardiovascular disease (CVD) every 36 seconds, approximately 2,380 deaths each day, according to the American Heart Association. Each day, 405 deaths occur in the U.S. as the result of strokes, an average of one death every 3:33. More people die annually from CVD than from any other cause including cancer, COPD, diabetes, lung infections and the flu, according to the American Heart Association (AHA) 2021 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics. Consider these steps to #RethinkCVRisk to change the course of the disease and your life. Understand Your Risk COVID-19 has shown that those with underlying CVD face an especially high risk of serious COVID-19-related illness or even death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Regardless of whether you’ve received your COVID-19 vaccination, now is a good time to discuss your risk for heart disease with your doctor. How Cardiovascular Disease Develops Risk factors for CVD include high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes and high blood pressure. Other factors that contribute to risk are family history, prior cardiovascular (CV) events, smoking, being overweight or obese and unhealthy diet and exercise habits. Over time, these risk factors can lead to injury of the blood vessel lining, causing inflammation, which can then trigger plaque growth. Plaque grows at different rates and in different arteries in the body for everyone and is often a slow, gradual process without symptoms.
In the past, medicines used to lower triglycerides, like fenofibrates and niacin, were commonly prescribed to help manage CV risk along with statins. However, clinical studies failed to show benefits and both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and American Diabetes Association discourage combining niacin and fenofibrates with statins. Some turn to dietary supplement fish oil to help manage CV risk. However, supplements contain only 30% of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) with the majority of the product consisting of non-omega-3 ingredients, including saturated fats. Some data suggests certain ingredients in dietary supplement fish oils, such as DHA and saturated fats, may raise bad cholesterol. While high triglycerides are an indicator of CV risk, lowering them won’t necessarily reduce your risk. However, addressing the underlying causes of high triglycerides can help, according to the AHA. Treatment Options With ongoing research, new standards-of-care are emerging. High cholesterol is a key CV risk factor with statins currently the first-line therapy for lowering cholesterol. Statins, diet and exercise can lower your CV risk by about 25-35%, but, for many people, controlled cholesterol doesn’t eliminate CV risk. This residual risk, or “persistent CV risk,” puts millions of patients at risk and has been the focus of therapeutic development for many years. Talk with your doctor about FDA-approved options that can help further reduce your heart risk if you already take statins.
As plaque buildup continues, the risk of suffering a CV event – such as heart attack or stroke – increases. If plaque ruptures, the body will try to repair the injury, potentially

4 Tips for Creating a Healthier Home People are spending more time at home, where their living spaces have become classrooms, gyms, offices, restaurants and more. The additional time at home provides a unique opportunity to make changes to create healthier living environments. In fact, a majority of Americans (54%) report being more concerned about having a healthy home since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent online survey of 2,000 adults conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Carrier Global Corporation, a leading global provider of healthy, safe and sustainable building and cold chain solutions. If you’re looking to improve your living space, consider these tips for making your home the healthiest it can be: CREATE AN IDEAL SLEEP ENVIRONMENT Most people sleep most comfortably when the air is slightly cool, so target a room temperature between 20
65-70 F. If this is cooler than you keep the home during the day, consider using a programmable thermostat that automatically lowers the temperature at bedtime. Also, remove distractions that may keep you awake and, if necessary, use a white noise device for uninterrupted sleep. IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY Maintaining heating and air conditioning filters is a concern many homeowners reported. According to the survey, 49% of respondents are concerned about reducing dust, pollen and other indoor pollutants as part of their filter maintenance. In addition to changing air filters on a frequent basis, air purifiers and humidifiers can help make the air inside homes fresher, cleaner and more comfortable. For example, third-party testing has shown the Carrier Infinity Whole Home Air Purifier inactivates 99% of select viruses and bacteria trapped on the filter,
YOUR HEALTH 2021
such as those that cause common colds, streptococcus pyogenes and human influenza. The purifier was also tested by a third party against the murine coronavirus, which is similar to the human coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19. In that testing, the purifier inactivated 99% of coronavirus trapped on the filter. UPDATE FIRE PROTECTION Since the pandemic began, people are also more concerned about fire safety precautions in their homes, such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Smoke alarms should be installed on each level of your house and inside each bedroom. Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed. In addition, install a fire extinguisher on each level and consider one for the kitchen, as well. Make sure to check extinguishers routinely and replace every 10-12 years. INSTALL CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS Another cause for concern amid COVID-19 is the potential for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in homes. CO alarms should be installed on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas, and it’s important to test them monthly. Consider installing alarms with a 10-year battery, such as the Kidde Wire-Free Interconnect 10-Year Battery Combination Smoke & CO Alarm for less hassle. It offers wire-free interconnect capability, a voice warning feature that accompanies the loud alarm tone and verbal announcements such as “replace alarm” at the end of the alarm’s life.
