SCAN SENIOR CITIZEN AWARENESS NETWORK A Partnership With
ROANE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE | ROANE COUNTY ELDERWATCH | COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS The Roane County Senior Citizen Awareness Network is a program developed by the Roane County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with Roane County ElderWatch and SCAN Volunteers. It is designed to meet the needs of our older citizens. Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton is dedicated to protecting the seniors in the county. Several years ago, he implemented the SCAN (Senior Citizen Awareness Network) Program to assist seniors. Although the role of the Sheriff’s Office is to protect and serve all citizens, seniors are often the most vulnerable and need extra help and protection. He enlisted the help of his assistant, Beth Sams to coordinate the program. Since many of the seniors are retired and are at home during the day, they can keep officers informed of suspicious activities. The Sheriff stated, “our seniors are the eyes and ears of the community.” The Sheriff recognizes the important role that the seniors play in the community and has recruited volunteers to assist. The SCAN seniors are checked on weekly and kept abreast of activities and programs in the community. Twice a month, they are personally visited and provided a calendar of events and a safety tip. In an effort to combat loneliness, the Sheriff’s Office partners with businesses, such as Roane Medical Center and Volunteer Electric to assist in providing information and materials for seniors. During Fire Safety Month, the Roane County Office of Emergency Services checked batteries for smoke detectors and provided these free of charge for seniors. The partnership between the Roane County Sheriff’s Office and the seniors is key to a safe and productive community. The friendships forged are especially satisfying to the Roane County Sheriff’s Office staff, seniors and volunteers.

TIPS FOR HIRING CARE PROVIDERS FROM AN RN Finding the right individual or agency to provide the care to our loved ones is getting more difficult and more expensive. Trusting someone you do not know and even someone you may have known for years can be one of the biggest challenges that is faced by anyone looking for senior care in 2021. One on One care is on the rise but finding the right care provider is the challenge. Throughout my career, I have seen many families who have hired an individual privately then find out sometime later that this person was exploiting their loved one so severely that the bank account beneficiary and POA were changed, and property willed to the caregiver or their family. Trust Accounts were being controlled by the very people who claimed to care about the wellbeing of that individual. This level of exploitation is abuse and can be prevented with these tips from an RN’s perspective and State Guidelines: • Whether you hire an individual or an agency, always perform an interview of the caregiver or the agency representative to see how they react and respond to your overall needs and requests. Any individual that is willing to do care outside of their scope of practice should not be considered since doing so is not permitted by the state and is unethical behavior. Finding out the scope of practice for a CNA or Skilled Nurse can be found by contacting the Department of Health for Tennessee. An agency must provide you their license to prove their ability to perform certain skill sets in the home. A personal license should only be provided when you are hiring an individual and care will be performed solely by that individual. An agency is held to higher standards when licensed properly through the State and has an obligation of responsibility for each individual scheduled in your home. Individuals may not hold General Liability or Workers Compensation Insurance putting your personal homeowners’ policy at risk if that individual is injured while providing direct care. • It is required that an agency not hire anyone listed on the following registries: Abuse Registry, Sex Offender Registry, Felony Registry. These are free and public for anyone needing this information and can be found by going to the tn.gov website. If hiring an individual, these registry sites are a must to check before allowing someone into your home. It is required that an agency check the
Abuse Registry and Sex Offender Registry every year. However, it is important to protect vulnerable individuals and running a Felony registry check annually is recommended by myself and is something recently implemented by my own agency. • Criminal Background Checks should be performed on anyone that you place in your home to care for your loved ones. These can be performed through the tn.gov site also through the TBI with the individual’s permission. An agency is required to perform these upon hire and every 2 years from the date of hire. The fingerprint background is the most accurate check to request. • Drug Screening upon hire and ongoing random drug screens. Hiring Staff is a difficult challenge to our agency and with so many diverting drugs and the rise in addiction, screening caregivers is priority to maintain the safety of your loved ones. Especially when they are prescribed medications that may be controlled due to their high risk of abuse. Hiring an Agency to provide care helps eliminate the task of maintaining the proper credentials and backgrounds on those providing care that helps eliminate and prevent possible abuse. An agency is required to provide daily supervision of each employee hired and is responsible for their actions within the home staffed. The rising cost of home care is pushing many to make the decision to hire privately and creating a rise in individuals who want to be paid privately. In many cases, families are not prepared and are put in a situation where they must act quickly to hire someone for their loved ones. Hiring the right care provider is so important and when families are not experienced with doing so, caregivers hired may not be screened properly to ensure they have the ability and an honest integrity needed to keep those vulnerable individuals safe. If you choose to use an agency, find out how they conduct their business. How will staff be made accountable for time submitted? Is there a portal to communicate through? Do they promote continuity in their service agreement? And what rights does the service recipient have and what is the grievance policy for complaints? These questions are valuable in the process of choosing an agency that best fits your needs. It is our priority, at Best Homecare, to maintain the safety of all we serve. AVOID MEDICATION ERRORS WITH THESE TIPS
Prescription medications are a necessity for many people. The American Academy of Family Physicians says that, each week, four out of five adults in the United States will use prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and/or various supplements. Approximately one-third of adults take five or more medications at the same time.
The potential for adverse drug events is elevated when people are taking multiple medications at one time. For example, mixing pills has the potential to cause serious injury or even death. Doctors, patients and pharmacies must work together to ensure that medication is taken safely. One of the best ways to prevent errors with medications is for patients to take an active role in their health care management. • KNOW YOUR DOSE. Children are at an especially high risk for medication errors because they require different doses than adults, offers the Mayo Clinic. Adults of different weights who share medications can run into trouble as well. It is key to follow the dosing instructions, as even a minor error in regard to dosage can potentially cause a big problem. • FOLLOW UP WITH YOUR DOCTOR. Certain medications can cause side effects that only can be noticed by lab testing, such as an impact to the liver. Doctors also may be under an obligation to follow up with patients taking psychological drugs to ensure the efficacy of treatment. Make sure you keep all follow-up appointments.

• MAINTAIN A CURRENT LIST OF MEDS. It is up to patients to share information with prescribing doctors regarding any and all products being taken to avoid harmful interactions. Using the same pharmacy for all prescriptions also is helpful. • BE HONEST ABOUT HEIGHT AND WEIGHT. Medication labeling and package inserts typically use metric units to correlate dose to a person’s physical attributes. Individuals should know their information in metric measurements and be honest with themselves about what they weigh. • USE MEDICATIONS CORRECTLY. It is important not to chew nonchewable pills or cut pills unless the pharmacist or doctor has said it is safe to do so. Accurate dosing also requires using the right spoon or syringe, not silverware. Store certain types of medications, such as eye drops and ear drops, separately so they’re not mistaken for one another. These are just some of the ways to prevent medication errors. People can consult with their doctors and pharmacists for more assistance in staying safe.

RCADC is part of the Retired and Senior Vounteer Program (RSVP) which was founded in 1971 and is one of the largest senior volunteer programs in the nation.
