George’s Prepared Foods invests in Campbell County community

G
eorge’s Prepared Foods in Caryville doesn’t only provide beef to companies in the area — it also provides hundreds of jobs. Originally founded in Arkansas in the 1920s, George’s Prepared Foods became a part of the Campbell County community in 2017 after buying what used to be known as Campos Foods. “What led me to the company was the opportunity,” said Corey Hirsch, Caryville’s plant manager. “There’s just a tremendous amount of growth in this company, and there’s a tremendous amount of innovation that we deal with through great collaboration. But the growth aspect is what really caught my eye.” Even though it’s now one of the top chicken producers in the United States, George’s is, at its heart, a family business. “C.L. George was the original family member that started the company,” said Megan Ernst, senior director of marketing for George’s Prepared Foods. “So he and his two sons,

Luther and Gene, ran what they called a huckster wagon in Springdale, Arkansas.” With their wagon, the George family hauled chickens, eggs and other farm products to the Midwest. Now, a century later, George’s Prepared Foods is in its fourth generation of family ownership and has diversified its portfolio, part of which can be attributed to the Caryville location. “We were wanting to diversify from being a vertically integrated poultry company, wanting to get into the red meat industry, the fully cooked industry, to have more opportunities to get in folks’ homes with new customers,” Hirsch said. Ernst echoed Hirsch’s statement, adding that it gave George’s an opportunity to get involved in the retail space as well, not just food service. “Primarily, George’s has been a successful business to food service company,” she said. “This gave us the ability to start doing retail and to get our feet wet in that segment.” Although it’s common to see mass layoffs as a result of mergers and acquisitions, George’s Prepared Foods retained Campos’ staff in 2017, according to Hirsch. “Most of the people that have been here, the salary folks and hourly folks, have been here longer than five years,” he said. “For example, I think we have 22 salary employees. Over half of them started out as an hourly employee more than 10 or 15 years ago. There’s just a tremendous amount of growth inside this building alone, with very, very GEORGE’S » 6

seasoned folks all the way down.” The building has four processing lines: two for hamburgers, one for ground meat and one for sausages, which runs pork four days a week and turkey one day a week to make breakfast sausage patties. Overall, the Caryville facility produces 850,000 pounds of product a week and has around 275 employees. However, it’s also a core tenant of the company’s philosophy to invest in the area beyond industrial opportunities and employment. “George’s finds it important to invest in the communities where they’re located,” said D’Aonda Bush, Caryville’s human resources manager. “Some of the examples, in general, include things like 4H, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, as well as working with things like Junior Achievement and local schools.” The company also provides donations to organizations like food pantries and churches in the Campbell County area. Of course, like any company, George’s Prepared Foods is always planning for the future and ways to expand their business. “We’re continually looking at new processes for new products where we can add more value,” Hirsch said about the Caryville facilities. “The company is looking for growth and expansion, as well as us.” On a corporate level, according to Ernst, diversification still remains a top priority for Carl and Charles George, the current CEOs of the company. “Retail is definitely part of that,” Ernst said. “We also purchased Ozark Mountain Poultry in 2018. The plan is not to stop here. There’s success, and we’re seeing success in the two 6 • DISCOVER CAMPBELL COUNTY
companies we acquired. Those brands are doing phenomenal, and we’re looking at line expansions and extending our customer base in those areas.” The community feeling of the Caryville facility, as well as the importance of feeding families throughout the country, is what makes the business unique in its industry. “Most of our employees have been here for a very, very long time,” Hirsch said. “They are true lovers of their job. They’re very passionate. I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure to work with such a spirited bunch before. They know that they’re feeding their families, their kids, their grandkids, and they take food safety and quality extremely seriously. They’re just true craftsmen, whether they’re a machine operator or maintenance or something else. They’re passionate about their work.”

eoples Bank of the South is a staple in downtown LaFollette, standing on the corner of Central and Tennessee avenues. Founded in 1917, Peoples Bank of the South was originally called Peoples Bank of LaFollette. A brainchild of David Reynolds and Sam A. Mars, the bank arose out of the need for a second bank in LaFollette and the Campbell County area. According to the bank’s website, part of the need was a bank that “would be organized in such a way and staffed by the caliber of people to understand the hardships of depressions and chaos in the farm and mining section of Tennessee.” On May 22, 1917, Peoples Bank of LaFollette opened, shortly changing its name to The Peoples National Bank in 1923. Roughly 80 years later, it became a chartered financial institution for Tennessee, not a national bank, and underwent a second name change, officially becoming Peoples Bank of the South. Now, Peoples Bank of the South has three locations, two in Campbell County in Jacksboro and LaFollette and one in Anderson County in Clinton. “The bank offers a full line of checking LaFollette Press
Photo by EVA HERINKOVÁ/Staff and savings,” said Dewayne Baird, branch manager for the Jacksboro office. “Plus money markets, accounts along with your checking, loans in-house, market credits, a full line of loans, big or small, and a couple other things.” Baird joined Peoples Bank of the South in 2013 during a period of significant expansion for the business. “We try to do more in Campbell County than in others because Campbell County is what we consider our home county,” he said. “We were expanding even further, and the bank’s grown since I started. We’ve had some of the best years that we’ve ever had.” According to Baird, a key tenet of the bank’s philosophy is giving back to Campbell County. “Every time a school or somebody else has asked us for help, I don’t think we’ve ever turned them away,” Baird said. One of the ways Peoples Bank of the South gives back to the community is through the Junior Achievement program at Jacksboro Middle School. Every week during the program, a representative from the bank goes to the school and plays games with students that teach them about finances, like checks and balances. Baird said the bank also sponsors a financial literacy program at Campbell County High School so that teachers
can provide an online program to teach students how to write checks, keep good credits and understand interest rates. “We pay for it every year,” Baird said. “There’s no cost to the school system.” In addition, Peoples Bank of the South is involved with CCHS’ football team, sponsors the Louie Bluie Music and Arts Festival and pays for banners at multiple sporting events. “We pay for player names at basketball games,” Baird said. “In Jacksboro, LaFollette, Caryville, they give us a list of names, and we pay for it. We want to be involved in any sport, whether it’s soccer, football or little league.” For Baird, that connection with the community is what makes Peoples Bank of the South special. “You’re always one call or one stop away,” he said. “If you call a regional bank, you may call the branch manager, and they say, ‘Well, I don’t make that decision. You’ll have to call the main office.’ When are you going to get to talk to the president or CEO of the bank? They’re going to have someone else talk to you. Here, you can talk to the president, and when you call us, you’ll get a person, not a recording. It’s more hands on, and you have the ability to talk to someone who’s in charge and can help you with your problem instead of jumping through hurdles.” DISCOVER CAMPBELL COUNTY • 7
