2020 Chairman of the Board As a graduate of Seminole High School and longtime Seminole resident, I am proud to have served the Seminole Area Chamber of Commerce as the 2020 Chairman of the Board. My family moved from Seminole to Central Texas for about twelve years. When we had the opportunity to return, it was one of the easiest decisions we ever made as a family. It was a blessing to come back to a family oriented community with an amazing school system, thriving business center and deep agriculture and oil roots. 2020 brought many challenges during an unprecedented period in our nation. Few in our community have been left untouched. However, Seminole met these challenges, adjusted in the face of these challenges and worked diligently together to support each other. I have been reminded many times over the past year of the heart of Seminole. An army of volunteers, essential workers, and businesses alike rose up to meet the needs of our community. Because of these great efforts, Seminole is stronger. Our chamber also faced many challenges and difficult decisions. Although many of our decisions were not popular, the chamber always kept the health and safety of our community first. We continued to meet to keep abreast on local issues and plan future events. The chamber never ceased its loyal support of local businesses. The 2020 Ag and Oil Appreciation Banquet (one of our most gratifying events) may have looked different but it went on as scheduled. The chamber continued to lift up not only those in need but those who set the standards for Gaines County. Seminole Area Chamber of Commerce, under the leadership of Shelby Concotelli, continues to be the gateway for new families and businesses to Seminole. There will always be challenges but our chamber is here to take on the task. As my year as chairman of the board comes to an end, I am confident in those who come after me and those who lead the efforts to make Seminole stronger. It has been my great honor to serve the chamber membership in this capacity. I look forward to watching this community grow and continuing to serve where I am needed.

Shelby Concotelli,

president and CEO of the Seminole Area Chamber of Commerce for the past 24 years, says that the local chamber is the vehicle between the business community and the private sector. “I’m kinda like 411 for the city; that’s me,” the Seminole High School graduate said. In her position with the chamber, which is made up of approximately 300 members, Concotelli oversees the operations of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization itself. “I am in charge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and marketing.” She noted that she works for a board of directors elected by the membership and has an executive committee that consists of a chairman, vice-chairman, treasurer, secretary, and a holdover chairman. Concotelli’s position is paid by the board. The organization generates its income through membership dues, events they hold throughout the year and additional other non-revenues Concotelli brings to the table. The Seminole Chamber hosts annual events such as the Gaines County 4th of July Extravaganza, Gaines County Ag & Oil Celebration, their Annual Membership Banquet, and every three years they are responsible for making the Great Comeback All School Reunion happen in Seminole.

"We have so much to offer. Seminole is a great place to raise a family." “We also produce the only map for Gaines County and we produce a welcome guide and membership guide for the city. People pay for the cost of the welcome guide through advertising,” she added. When it comes to spending money, the chamber prepares an annual budget and it goes before the board. “The last couple of years it was hard to present a budget because we did not have the funding we had in the past. I also give a financial statement to the board every month. We are not part of the county or the city but have an office that we rent from the county. Giving a financial statement to the board each month and also receiving annual reviews assures that we are dotting our i’s and crossing all of our t’s;” Concotelli said. The CEO also added that the chamber is responsible for all of its utilities and landscaping. If Concotelli and other chamber members have an idea for a project, such as they did with beautifying the area around their office building several years ago, it’s presented to the board and the board votes on it. Before she was hired by the Seminole Chamber of Commerce, originally as an executive director, Concotelli supervised and managed apartment communities in the Dallas and Midland area for 17 years. Midland is where she first became interested in joining her area chamber. “I did a lot of volunteering there (Midland) and was very involved in the community. I started with their chamber through the ambassador program. I love chamber work.” When Concotelli left Midland to come to Seminole, the mayor of that West Texas town proclaimed May 28, 1997, Shelby Concotelli Day due to her many years of continuous community service and volunteer work in the area. When Concotelli came back to Seminole-she had lived in Gaines County from kindergarten until her senior year-she knew that she wanted to be involved with the local chamber. Luckily she moved to the area just as the

Concotelli quickly expressed interest in the position and soon found herself running the nonprofit entity. “I am an introduction to Seminole. The majority of my time is spent keeping the community involved in events happening around town. Also, if people need a painter, their yard mowed, daycare, I point them in the right direction.” When someone is moving here from out of town and they don’t know the ins and outs of the area, and they aren’t familiar with banks that are here or what the school system does, Concotelli jumps in and gets them the information. “If people are traveling, they call the chamber and get hotel and motel information, find out if they will be close to restaurants, things like that,” she added. When asked what she likes about Seminole, Concotelli’s list was endless. “We have so much to offer. Seminole is a great place to raise a family. We have the splash pad, the swimming pool at the high school, great facilities, our schools are number one and we have a state of the art hospital.” Concotelli is most impressed with the fact that when anything happens in Seminole, Seminole comes together. “If a farmer gets cancer or a bad illness, it’s not uncommon for fellow farmers around him to come in and help him get his crop out.” As much as she loves the community, Concotelli still has several items she would like to see come into play in Seminole, mainly activities which involve local teens, be it a movie theatre, bowling alley, putt-putt, or something outside of what the school offers. Currently, she is working with business owners and other interested parties in brainstorming what the community can do to attract visitors to Seminole. “We are working on what we can do to make Seminole a destination where people come to spend the day, possibly the night.” The work at the chamber never seems to stop. While members band together to make these activities a success under Concotelli’s leadership, the president continues to jot down ideas she hopes to put into play in the future. “Everybody wants something to happen here, but who’s going to make it happen? If we all come together, it’s the only way it can,” Concotelli concluded.
