New Businesses Cameron Outpatient VA Clinic

Highland Development. Officials with KCVA said the 14-month construction project was completed on time and within budget. Last April, Economic Development of Cameron Consultant Terry Rumery

announced the city averted plans to move the VA clinic from the Cameron Missouri Veterans Home. “When we started dealing with that thing, the competition wasn’t just to remain in Cameron. That

According to a press release by the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Clinic, the 7,500 square-foot Cameron VA clinic, located at 311 Little Brick Road, will support more than 1,000 area veterans and was designed and built to improve all aspects of the healthcare experience. “We created a robust

healthcare facility that includes rooms dedicated to telehealth, specialty care and laboratory services,” KCVA Medical Center Director, David Isaacks said. “This new VA clinic will improve access to care, reduce the need to travel to the main KCVA hospital, and improve the overall Veteran experience and healthcare outcomes.” The project was awarded in September 2019, and with the efforts of BNB Design and

was their number one choice, but it wasn’t a necessity. There are two other communities to the south that were very, very much trying to get that project,” Rumery said. Rumery said the added group behind the project originally sought an alternative location, but turned it down. “About three years ago, Kent Osborn and I visited with the V.A. clinic and we were informed they were looking at expanding the clinic and then the V.A. Hall would take over the space they presently have,” Rumery said. “It’s been an ongoing thing for well over two years, almost three … They have decided on a second location they had wanted and turned it down. That area is towards the highway, on the west side by [Twin Creek Tire Company]. They will go in that spot and they have awarded that contract.” According to the. KCVA

press release, this new facility provides the space needed to enable the best care possible for KCVA’s Veterans. “This new clinic is just the latest enhancement to our healthcare system,” said Isaacks. “All the improvements and additions we have completed are designed with one main goal – to better serve Veterans in Kansas City and the surrounding communities. We are continuously looking for ways to make our healthcare system more accessible while expanding the services we can offer.”

as far as the size of a showroom and connected warehouse space to keep the people’s pawn until they come back and get it.” Despite the old Porter’s Lumber building being vacant of only a few months, remodeling the building will be no small undertaking. In just a few short weeks, General Manager Scott Sutton hopes to have installed display cases for guns, guitars, jewelry and electronics installed in time for the July 15 opening, then handing off oversight to store manager David

Bromley, a Cameron resident. “The size of the building worked perfect for us. We have a lot of work, but the plan is July 15,” Sutton said. “… It’s going great. Everything is going together great. We’ve had good crews on everything. We’ve had to do some plumbing and the guys that are out there now are doing the new gun rack and all of the shelving for the DVDs. They will have that all done next week. It’s going really good.” Once the racks and displays are in place, Sutton said the

next focus will be transferring surplus stock from the St. Joseph location to Cameron but that in no does not mean a lower quality product. Instead, he hopes to have everything available in St. Joseph inside the Cameron location - barring a few one-of-a-kind items - and even a few brand-new firearms. “Everybody seems really excited when I tell them who I am and what I’m doing,” Sutton said. “Floor space wise, it’s as big as our building in St. Joseph. We will have

a large selection. The firearms have been selling like crazy so most of the firearms I’m selling are brand new. Most everything you will see here are brand new firearms. What we’re trying to do now is get in the inventory so we have enough.” Sutton said what sets American Gold Mine Pawn and Payday Loan apart is the philosophy of they will pawn anything within reason. While some payday loan businesses have a minimum loan amount sometimes as high as $500, Sutton said the shops he oversees often provide relatively small loans with low interest rates. “It’s very important. Right now, gas prices are reasonable. Pawns take off if gas prices spike like it has in the past,” he said. “We loan a lot of gas money for people just trying to get back and forth to work and the paycheck doesn’t make it until the end of the week. They might need $30 just to get back and forth to work and that’s what we’re here for … We don’t ask what it’s for, but we’re here to help them.”

Message from the Mayor

Introduction The City Council and I want to gratefully acknowledge and thank all of our businesses and residents for their continued efforts in keeping our community healthy and safe. My primary focus during this new year is to improve the community to make it a place where everyone would want to come to work, play and live. To that end, I’m encouraging everyone to pull together to create an affordable and successful community. As we move forward into 2021, I would like to highlight some of the exciting projects we will be focusing on for the new year. Trails During the past year, we have completed another phase of the paved ADA accessible trail about 75% of the way around Sunrise Lake, primarily using state and federal grants. We are currently applying for grants to complete the remaining 25%. The City Council has also placed money into the trails project out of our Community Project funding.

Mayor Dennis M Clark Parks The exciting next steps in our Parks Department are the rebuilding of the aquatic park and new community park. Based on the public support as evidenced in the new park sales tax, these two projects are now a financial reality. It is our hope that both

of these projects should be substantially completed by end of calendar year 2021, with a grand opening of spring 2022. The Aquatic Center is going to be constructed at the site of the current swimming pool and the new community park will be constructed just southeast of the intersection of Hwy 36 and I-35 on 100 acres of newly acquired land. Fire Department Expansion During this past year the Fire Department completed the expansion of their building allowing for two more fire truck bays and expanded storage. This will allow our great Volunteer Fire Department to provide even better public safety protection. Main Street The Cameron Main Street, Inc. organization is now up and running and has been now fully operational for this past year. Notable activities have been sponsoring both the 4th of July Celebration and downtown Christmas activities. Most recently Main Street has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce in putting up the downtown light pole banners.

2021 Goal Setting Session On July 8, 2020 the City Council conducted their Goal Setting Retreat. The following goals and objectives were established by the City Council and adopted as priorities. The City of Cameron has pledged to pursue these objectives with City resources as passed and unanimously approved by Resolution 202026. 1. Develop a Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan 2. Follow through on a Utility Rate Analysis Great Northwest Wholesale Water Commission (GNWWC) The GNWWC Staff has been communicating with the member’s about upcoming actions. We now are at the point where we have approximately 20 easements yet to be completed and we have entered into court proceedings to secure them. GNWWC has received DNR approval of the

construction plans and has only a few minor details to clarify for USDA to give their approval. As a result, we expect to send the plan out for bid by the First of April. Conclusion In Cameron we enjoy a high quality of life with small town amenities but within easy reach of the Kansas City Metropolitan area. I again want to encourage everyone to work together to improve our community, to learn from past mistakes and to continue to move forward to make Cameron a destination.

For Griffin, who donated nearly a third of the construction costs, he found the ribbon cutting ceremony especially meaningful because the building

bears the name of his late wife Linda Griffin, whose passion for animals he wanted to immortalize. “I’m grateful to the city of Cameron and the surrounding community. They’ve been good to my family and me also,” said Griffin, who donated more than $200,000 for construction of the new facility. “I’m so proud you folks cared so much about these small animals that you worked

on this for several years … You folks should be very proud of what you accomplished.” Last Friday, a seven-year effort to construct a new animal control facility finally came to an end. For years the facility fell into disrepair with its plywood walls rotting and lacking space to properly house the animals it receives. Although supporters like Cameron land developer Susan Manion kept a new animal care facility in the city consciousness, construction of

2021 the facility gained traction with Griffin’s $200,000 donation. “This would not have happened without the generosity of Bob Griffin. We as a council wrestled with this for many years. It was needed and, even though Bob has been gone for many years, he didn’t forget his home town,” Cameron Mayor Dennis Clark said. Kathy Turner, who oversees Cameron Animal Control, said she will spend the next few weeks integrating into the new

building and moving the animals currently in her care into their new confines. The new facility offers a number of amenities, but she believes the added space will have the greatest impact on the wellbeing of the animals she houses, allowing her to separate cats from dogs as well as sick animals.

“It’s better for the animals … It’s going to be warmer. The cats are not going to be subjected to hearing the dogs bark continuously,” Turner said. “When you get a shy cat, their lives literally depend on whether they’re adoptable. It’s hard to tell when they’re scared to death. For cats, it’s going to be amazing.”

After decades working on roofs throughout Northwest Missouri, owner Brian Ward said the Ward Roofing will soon dramatically expand services to make it a one stop shop for area homeowners. “We’re adding a construction company so this is brand new to us,” said Maggie Ward, the daughter of owner Brian Ward and assistant manager at Ward Roofing. “For the last 24 years, we’ve only done roofing, siding

and guttering. This year, we’re adding the construction side. We’re going to do new construction builds, commercial roofing, metal roofing, remodeling, concrete, doors and windows.” Brian Ward attributed the shift in focus to a myriad of factors. The first was bringing on Brian Bottcher and Josh Prothero, who each have lengthy backgrounds in construction with Prothero recently leaving Cameron Lumber to assist in launching the new endeavor. Another factor was a growing demand. “This is a real need for it.

People have trouble getting contractors to do stuff,” Brian Ward said. “With Josh coming on and Brian coming back, it really helps. When you only have one person, you start making a lot of mistakes. These guys coming back has really opened the door for us to do a lot of stuff.” The shift also marks a personal milestone for Brian Ward. Ward recently celebrated his silver anniversary in the roofing business. Shortly after the birth of Maggie, and faced with the possibility of unemployment unless he went into business for himself, Ward reluctantly put in an advertisement at the local paper offering roofing repairs. Before long, his phone started ringing. “I was working for an old fellow in Gilman City and we had just had Maggie. I was about 24 or 25 and he said ‘You’re going to have to go on your own or work for somebody else because I don’t want to work that hard,’” Ward said. “We put an ad in the

2021 paper and people started calling … I was really nervous. I didn’t really know how to sell a roof or even done a roof without that guy with me. We started off that winter cutting wood and getting ready for the summer. A guy in the Martinsville area called and we went up there and sold him a roof. We kind of got started and adding different people. It just kept growing and growing to where, eventually, it was a lot better for me to find work for other people and just do the sales and the management.” With a strong core group of employees, and a fleet of trucks emblazoned with the Ward Roofing logo, said he is confident heading into the future. “We’re starting to bid quite a bit of stuff and we’re working on a remodel right now that Josh had started,” Ward said. “He had the job and we’re going to get that finished, more for advertisement and just expand and go from there. We’ve talked about before, it just wasn’t ever the right time.”

community. Cameron is still a farming community whether anyone wants to believe it or not,” said Rodney Hahn, whose family has been a part of the Cameron Coop for multiple generations. Cody Sloan, who managed the Coop since 2017, said since its inception the Coop has been a vital part of the Cameron community. With it being a collection of 1,229 current members, their main mission has been providing affordable, quality agricultural products to area farmers. While publicly traded companies have an impetus for perpetual growth, profit margins are not a major concern for the Coop. “We need to turn a profit to keep the lights on, but, ultimately, we exist for our members,” Sloan said. “That’s not a politically correct thing to say, but it’s the definition of a Coop. Anybody can do business with us. If you come in and sign up for an account, then you become a member as well. You eventually are able to own a share and become a voting member. We exist for our customers. I think it’s an advantage we have over other companies because we can make decisions locally.” The celebration comes at an awkward time for the

Coop, which looks to expand its grain bin operations while simultaneously navigating through an economy stifled by the outbreak of COVID-19. Sloan said the ongoing pandemic has not affected business yet, but foresees an impact in the future as the economic downturn slowly reaches America’s agriculture professionals. “It’s not slowing down, but it’s effecting us. Corn, grain and bean prices are pretty tough right now,” Sloan said. “Not many guys, if they have stored bean or corn, are interested in selling right now. Hopefully, when this stuff bypasses and we move on. We can see a rise in the markets. It’s the same thing with the cattle market. We sell a lot of feed to cattle producers and the cattle markets are a little soft right now. It hasn’t slowed us down, because people still need to eat, but I won’t go as far as to say it hasn’t affected us.” Sloan added once COVID-19 passes he foresees a bright future ahead for the Coop with its new grain bins giving it the ability to store more than 400,000 bushels of product. “There are farmers in this area that raise corn that is going to end up going in those bins,”

[farmers] a move convenient place to deliver their corn, it also puts more farmers into this Ingredient program and it’s a great, guaranteed income for us as well. Hopefully, it’s a winwin for us, Ingredion and the farmers.”

Sunrise Lake Cameron Reservoir The Cameron Rotary Club officially opened what City of Cameron Public Works Director Drew Bontrager hopes to be the centerpiece of the Cameron Reservoir. Officials with the Rotary Club, City of Cameron, Cameron Area Chamber of Commerce and Cameron Park Board joined for a ribbon cutting ceremony, last fall, for a covered fishing dock originally conceived as a way to allow disabled veterans access to Sunrise Lake. “Rotary has been in Cameron for 97 years. We’re approaching our 100-year anniversary in 2023 and there have been a lot of projects Rotary has entered into, but I think this is one the community will be proud of for a long time,” Cameron

Rotary Club President Richard Riddell said. “The idea was to provide a place for veterans with disabilities to be able to get out of their cars and on a hard surface roll right up to a place to fish and be safe about it.” The 15-by-30-foot, ADA dock is the latest feature along the walking trail, which will have benches and, eventually an awing Riddell said. “This is by far the focal point and center piece of Sunrise Lake. It’s been the culmination of multiple projects and multiple groups have contributed to this over the years,” Bontrager said. “There are a lot of partnerships and people coming together, but this is by far biggest project out here, most impactful and brings it all

The Cameron R-I School District is made up of four school buildings: Parkview Elementary (grades Prek-2), Cameron Intermediate School (grades 3-5), Cameron Veterans Middle School (grades 6-8) and Cameron High School (grades 9-12). We have high expectations for our students. The District continues to create an academic environment where every student can achieve beyond their potential. The Cameron R-I School District strives to do more than merely offer a quality education; the District “ensures” an excellent education. All four of our school buildings are Professional Learning Communities (PLC) where student learning is the focus. The staff of the Cameron R-I School District has worked very hard to modify their grading, teaching, and communication with each other to assist all students in the learning process. Cameron High School implemented Project Lead the Way (PLTW) seven years ago with two tracts: engineering and bio medical; in the fall of 2016, computer science was added as well.l. Project Lead the Way is now a part of the science curriculums in grades 3-8. In addition, our Veterans Middle School also participates in The Leader in Me a character building program. In June of 2020 voters approved a bond issue that will build a state of the art vocational center, new high school science classrooms and a new performing arts center at the High School. We have started on work already and the next eighteen months the community will see very big changes. We are very excited about the opportunities that our new facilities will provide our students. The district greatly appreciates the support of the community and wants to thank all of its patrons, as well as new residents and visitors. School that is second to none. Cameron’s education system offers highly trained professionals and the latest technology in teaching the leaders of tomorrow. There are four educational facilities located in Cameron. Parkview Elementary School houses students from Pre-K through second grade. Cameron Intermediate School holds grades three through five. Cameron Veterans Middle School is home to grades six through eight. Cameron High School houses grades nine through twelve, and a credit recovery program to better meet the needs of all students. The district continues to improve technology resources with the installation of wireless networks in all buildings. Mobile computer labs are being used at all of our buildings and we are currently piloting programs at the high school, middle school and intermediate school with iPads and Chromebooks. The district has completed the process of becoming a Professional Learning Community (PLC). All four schools in our school district have meron finished up their training. Recently Parkview Elementary and Cameron Intermediate Schools became an exemplary Professional Learning Community and was recognized at the state level. Cameron Veterans Middle School was recently recognized as a sustaining PLC school. The Cameron R-I School District is undergoing many changes with more in store. The primary focus will be on student learning and preparing students for the ever changing demands in the future.

Just knowing the need of the area for having a local barista, we saw an opportunity to work with another small, local company Mother Earth Coffee out of Kansas City,” Cameron Market Owner Tony Clark said. Along with a variety coffee, tea, cappuccino and espresso

flavors – Mother Earth Coffee also offers pastries and other sweet treats. While previous generations associated picking a coffee and pastry as part of a morning routine, Clark said the Cameron Mother Earth Coffee kiosk stays busy throughout the day. “We’re fortunate to bring the coffee kiosk into our store and give to our community. That has been received very well so far,” Clark said. “It stays busy throughout the day. The coffee shop hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the secret there is all of the different selections available. We have chilled options as well as the chai tea. There are a lot of people who will enjoy a mocha or a cappuccino later in the day.” With business doing well at the Mother Earth Coffee kiosk, Clark said he has no immediate plans for change. With similar agreements

with the Osborn-based Shatto Milk Company, Clark said he’s always on the lookout for emerging and partnering with other small businesses to bring new and unique items to Cameron Market. “We were really excited to be able to launch this in December – the height of popularity for hot drinks,” Clark said. “When it started off, it beat all projections. It was great and it’s still doing well. We’re always looking for other opportunities that will be exciting to our customers in the community.”
