e appreciate you taking the time to look at our annual Community Guide. It’s a labor of love and we try to do our best every year to share what is special about Jack County. For first timers with the Guide, we provide an annual list of local events for the County. We’ve added some monthly items including our Farmers Market on the last Saturday of the month (MarchOctober) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the courthouse square in Jacksboro. There’s always lots of vendors selling their wares. Come on out and enjoy.

W
hen it comes to medical services ,the reality is bigger is not always better. In fact, for Jack County residents, Faith Community Hospital is an important and critical option for healthcare. Opened in 1958, Faith Community Hospital was a 41-bed medical facility that provided healthcare services for residents of Jack County. In Fall 2015, the hospital completed construction on a 75,000 square-foot facility, complete with cafe and, soon to come, a wellness center. FCH offers a wealth of medical services including: inpatient care, minor surgeries, obstetrics, level IV 24-hour trauma center, advanced radiology services including CT scanning, outpatient lab, physical therapy, social services, patient education, rural health clinic, and more. Space is also available for additional parking and medical office buildings in the future. The new campus is also in better compliance with requirements for disabled patients and visitors. There are many new services that to benefit residents, such as an obstetrics unit for local delivery of babies. Minor surgical and screening procedures are also a highlight of the newer

hospital, as well as on-site mammography screening, expanded room for primary and specialty care clinics, and expanded physical and cardiovascular therapy departments. “At a time when many rural communities are seeing a reduction in health-care services, we are fortunate to be experiencing growth in Jack County,” said Phyliss Elenburg, president of the FCH Charitable Foundation. “It is important for rural residents to have hospitals nearby to access the essential medical services that the community needs and expects.” “We’re headed in the right direction,” explained Frank Beaman, CEO of FCH. “We’re continuing to head in the right direction.” A five-member board oversees the facility consisting of Rod Hammond, Mark Maples, Board President Lori McBrayer, Leslie Chalmers and Larry Hopwood. Hospital board elections take place in November with three-year terms. The hospital is located at 215 Chisholm Trail in Jacksboro. acksboro’s T-N-T Fest is the crowning jewel of celebrations in the city and is held theist Saturday in June every year. The day-long event, held at or near Lake Jacksboro, has a number of attractions including a snake show, several tournaments including a corn hole tournament sponsored by Jack County STOMP, a very popular 3-on-3 basketball tournament which brings in players of all ages for some very hotly contested basketball action. The athletic tournaments continue for the youth as a baseball tournament with several age divisions comes to town. In previous years,

around 5,000 players, coaches, and fans have come to town to support their team. For the little ones who want a little less competition, there is also a bounce house to get their energy out. After some time off a BBQ cookoff, sponsored by the Jacksboro Fire Department, came back in 2019. For the much younger set, the Baby Beautiful contest is a crowd favorite with people setting up 45 minutes to an hour before to make sure they get a great view of the participants. Age groups make things fairer for all. Bands get toes tapping in the early evening. Some of the fun from previous events will not be taking place as the annual jalapeño pepper eating
showdown is a logo for 2020. The big event of the festival is the annual fireworks display over Lake Jacksboro at sundown. It wouldn’t be an event of any type without food. All sorts of food and drink trucks and even vendors selling their handcrafted arts and crafts. Everything has gotten bigger and better with the food choices multiplying. For those who want something a little lighter in the summer heat, there’s always lemonade and snow cones. Lawn chairs are always a necessity at the event. The renovation of the center now has folks interested in soccer wanting to take part in leagues which are forthcoming, The facility also offers four treadmills, two nusteps, one exercise bike, as well as elliptical and weight machines. Faith Community Hospital is also using the facility for its afternoon exercise classes. An annual fee is charged for families, as well as a discount punch card for multiple admissions and individual daily admissions for less frequent users.

The library serving Jack County is named for Gladys Johnson Ritchie, who was interested in seeing a new public library in Jacksboro. She came to Jacksboro in 1925 as a new graduate from Teacher’s College in Commerce. She worked as an elementary teacher and was active in the local library club for many years. One of the main resources for education that she
felt was needed was a great library. In 1980, with encouragement from others, Ritchie funded and oversaw the construction of the library. In 1999, she also funded an addition to the main library and remodeled the existing building and the children’s library. She believed in the importance of keeping up with the latest technology and encouraged others to do the same. The Gladys

Concerned Citizens of Jack County offers services for seniors and the disabled of the county. Nutritionally-balanced meals are offered daily at
the center along with activities, such as movies, cards, games and more. Concerned Citizens also facilitates the Meals on Wheels program for Jacksboro. The center also hosts an annual Christmas Craft Fair in November. Concerned Citizens of Jack County is located at 400 East Pine Street in Jacksboro.

for a monthly luncheon September through May, weather permitting. Th e lunch is potluck beginning at noon on the first Friday of the month. The center is also available for rentals and use for community meetings and gatherings.

The Jack County Museum is housed in one of the oldest houses in Jack County. According to the museum’s brochure, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Cooper built the home in 1882 from materials freighted in by wagon from Jefferson, Texas. The Coopers paid for their home with $20 gold pieces. The extra-thick walls may be viewed inside where they extend beyond later additions to the house. Th ere are seven rooms with four being the original structure. Native stone chimneys constructed for the fireplaces in the front rooms are still standing and one fireplace is intact. The once wooden porch has been replaced with concrete and the wooden tapered porch post replaced with metal filigree. When the last owner, Mrs. A.A. (Lottie) Files, died in December 1987, her grandchildren offered to sell the home to the Jacksboro Chamber of Commerce to be used as a permanent site for the Jack County Museum. This house witnessed the birth of the Corn Club in Texas, later known as the Texas 4-H Club in 1907 when Tom M. Marks was the resident. Marks was a talented, educated man of many occupations; school teacher,
superintendent, public entertainer, construction engineer for the railroad, farmer, editor of the newspaper and special county agent for Jack County. While serving as special county agent, he felt there was a great need for new developments in farming methods. After failing to convince the local farmers of new changes, he turned to the youth of the area and organized The Corn Club on September 8, 1907, in Jacksboro. New types of corn seed were distributed among the membership of 111 boys with each boy receiving one gallon of corn. Th e following year, 1908, the first county fair was held with an attendance between 1,000 to 2,000 people. The Corn Club survived and be came the Texas 4-H Clubs and the legacy of Tom Marks continues today.
The work he did in the agricultural field is recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture. Visitors to the museum enjoy the numerous artifacts related to early life in Jack County, as well as a vast collection of military exhibits, 4-H memorabilia, Jacksboro High School mementos, along with cemetery records and genealogical records. On site is a restored 1880s log cabin, a collection of early farm implements and an out-building fi led with pioneer life necessities. Jack County pioneer living comes to life each year the first Saturday in June when visitors travel back in time to the early days of Jack County as they re-live the past and listen to tales of Texas history in and around Jack County during the museum’s Pioneer Day.

he Jacksboro Chamber of Commerce shares an office with the Jacksboro Economic Development Corporation in the historic GT&W Depot, which also serves as the community visitors’ center. The Jacksboro Chamber of Commerce is organized, maintained and operated for the purpose of advancing the business, civic, commercial, industrial and general interest of the city of Jacksboro and its surrounding trade area in Jack County. The Chamber seeks to support and expand existing commerce, recruit new industry, promote the city’s rich history and improve the quality of life in the greater Jacksboro area. he Jacksboro Economic Development Corporation is committed to creating a fertile economic development climate and encouraging the orderly growth of Jacksboro and Jack County, Texas. The Jacksboro EDC has established a successful business park addition within the city with several new businesses added in recent years including two banks, retailers, a restaurant and the hospital. Sites for qualified businesses are available. Th e JEDC also offers assistance in building construction and furnishings. Currently a Matching Fund Grant Program is helping to fund renovations on existing businesses’ facades and building exteriors. The grant offers a maximum matching of $15,000 for properties and existing business meeting eligibility requirements. The goal of the program is to enhance the viability and sustainability of commercial properties in the city.
