Letter from the President I am so honored to be able to serve as the Decatur Chamber of Commerce president for a second term. As we all know, 2020 was quite the year of ups and downs. I am proud of our Chamber, the Chamber members and our community for stepping up and supporting our local businesses during that crucial time period. Throughout this past year, I have learned so much more about how the Chamber runs and what our mission truly is. I am excited to work closely with the board of directors, as well as supporting the staff and volunteers to promote and bring value to our members of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce for 2021. Our Chamber of Commerce exists to support local business and promote commerce in our amazing town of Decatur, Texas. Even though we have an active board of directors and two employees, the Chamber cannot do this task alone. I want to thank the board of directors, Chamber staff, ambassadors and many volunteers for all the selfless hard

work that goes into promoting our Chamber members. Those of you who have been part of the Chamber events, I want you to know you’re noticed and appreciated. Those of you in our community, I challenge you to get involved with the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber offers many opportunities for you to be active and involved. Join us at our informative, monthly luncheons featuring guest speakers, updates and networking opportunities. Make sure to sit with someone you don’t know. The Decatur Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary organization of citizens investing their time and money in community development and working together to improve the economic, civic and cultural well-being of the area. Established in 1953, Decatur Golf Club is one of the best maintained and enjoyable nine-hole golf courses in North Texas. Located about 2 miles north of Decatur, just off FM 730, DGC offers private memberships, as well as public daily rates. The clubhouse and pool just underwent significant improvements and are inviting areas to unwind after a challenging round of golf. DGC also offers onsite cart barns for members to store their personal carts. The club hosts a variety of tournaments throughout the year, as well as the summer Scramble Series at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and the Snowball Classic Tournament Series in the winter and spring. Tee times are required.

Beginning clockwise from the entrance, the Path of Sacrifice and Valor leads visitors through 18 brass placards that commemorate American sacrifices in battle from the Revolutionary War to present. Inlaid in the walkway are 7,000 pavers available

to personalize in honor of those who have served or continue to serve the United States in the armed forces. An eternal flame is centered in the park to signify that sacrifice is the price we pay for eternal vigilance and the defense of our freedoms.

The Wise County Heritage Museum housed the Decatur Baptist College prior to 1965. Today its exhibits tell the story of Wise County. The Lost Battalion Room serves as a tribute to local soldiers who were captured by the Japanese as prisoners of war in the Dutch East Indies during World War II. Petrified Wood Gas Station 904 Business U.S. 81/287

The Petrified Wood Gas Station stands like a relic from a bygone era on the east side of Decatur. E.F. Boydston built a gas station in 1927 and eight years later decided to cover its exterior with chunks of petrified wood. He even covered the walls of the cafe next door and the motor court. Although the gas station and cabins are now closed, the Whistle Stop Cafe is open. Stop for a chicken fried steak and snap a photo in front of the historical marker on the front of the building.

Points of interest The Waggoner Mansion End of Main Street

The Waggoner Mansion was built by Dan Waggoner and was dubbed “El Castile.” The twostory home sits on 13.5 acres and includes 16 rooms and eight fireplaces. It’s constructed of fossiliferous limestone and decorated with handcrafted wrought iron on the roof and balconies. Although the mansion is not open to the public, it’s worth trekking to the gate for a photo op. Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands 1400 N. U.S. 81/287 (940) 627-5475 fs.usda.gov

Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grasslands boasts 20,250 acres north of Decatur and is a destination for horseback riders, campers, hikers, hunters, fishermen and photographers. There are 75 miles of multi-use trails and several small lakes for fishing. TADRA Point is a designated trailhead and the primary access point for the trail system. Restrooms and parking facilities are available at this location. Valley View Group Use Campground is available by reservation on the weekends. Facilities include restrooms, parking spurs, fire rings, lantern posts and a group pavilion. Popular lakes are Black Creek Lake, Clear Lake and Rhodes Lake.

Ambassador Program The Decatur Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program was created in 2020 to support and promote members, board of directors and staff by: ❖ supporting and attending Chamber events and ribbon cuttings ❖ educating members about the services and benefits of Chamber membership ❖ fostering new member engagement in Chamber programs, events and committees

EDC fosters business growth and development

The Decatur Economic Development Corporation is a dynamic, forward-thinking organization, and its work can largely be categorized into three areas: 1. Recruiting new companies, investment and quality jobs to Decatur 2. Retaining existing companies and jobs in Decatur 3. Improving our workforce for employers of today and tomorrow When these goals are accomplished, the community is able to control its growth and determine the economic makeup of the greater Decatur area. Decatur is the county seat of Wise County and the hub for local commerce, boasting the majority of the county’s business transactions. The community grew by 7 percent in 2019, according to the

North Central Texas Council of Governments’ annual population growth report, putting it on pace for the 85 percent total growth predicted to occur between 2016 and 2031 in Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. To ensure Decatur remains the business leader in Wise County, the Decatur EDC Board of Directors, with the support of the Decatur City Council, developed an industrial park to increase the rate of new businesses locating here.

Additionally, a minimum of $12.2 million in new capital investment will have been deployed into Decatur’s market once the facilities are completed. Decatur is poised to become the next major community along U.S. 81/287 due to our robust and diverse economy.

Since Eagles Landing Business Park was completed in late 2019, three new companies officially selected Decatur as the location for new manufacturing and distribution facilities.

When people and businesses consider relocating here, they’re swayed by a successful and growing hospital in Wise Health System, an innovative school district opening the first STEM Academy in Wise County, a rapidly growing housing market with price points for all buyers and a growing retail landscape with national and local options.

The companies represent national and international business interests, and most importantly, they committed a minimum of 150 total new jobs to be filled by area residents.

An engaged citizenry and the quintessential Texas small-town, courthouse square complete a picturesque place. Decatur is great today, but it will be even better tomorrow because of all of this.

Digital solutions spark Chamber growth

espite the odds, the Decatur Chamber of Commerce experienced exponential growth in 2020, thanks in large part to Thinkments, a digital solutions company.

Chamber Marketing Coordinator Shelby Carpenter said the Thinkments team transformed the Chamber’s online presence, helping drive membership and create a more interactive experience for Chamber members. “They walked us through and transformed it into a working website, instead of a website that did not work,” she said. “We launched in February 2020, and it turned out to be good timing.” Through a new and improved website, Chamber members were able to stay better connected and informed, despite the effects of COVID-19 on various aspects of the economy. The Chamber even grew by a whopping 83 members, all while some chambers of commerce were forced to close in 2020. “Everything has gone online and without that, it could have been a bad situation for us as well,” Carpenter said.

Today community members can log on to decaturtx.com and do everything from join the Chamber to register for specific events or even sign up to sponsor different activities. “Pretty much everything that you used to come into the Chamber for, you can now do online,” Carpenter said. She explained that Thinkments has also been instrumental in helping many local businesses fine-tune their Google listing, for free, and they’ve also poured into multiple nonprofits, creating websites and helping raise awareness. Thinkments (thinkments.com) works tirelessly to help customers plan their information technology strategy through IT consulting. In addition to web design, they also create 360 virtual tours and offer photography and videography services, including drone services. The team also provides Google My Business

training, logo packages and trackable flyers. “It’s just been great working with a local

business and remarkable to see how an improved online presence facilitated such growth,” Carpenter said.

DISD is home to more than 3,450 students and is composed of three elementary schools (grades K-5), one middle school (grades 6-8) and one high school (grades 9-12). Our plans are to open a sixth campus in the fall of 2021 as the Decatur ISD STEM Academy at Enis Elementary School. Fly into Decatur Decatur Municipal Airport sits on 205 acres about one mile north of the Decatur Square at 351 Airport Dr. The airport operates on an asphalt runway, which measures 4,200 feet in length and 60 feet in width.
