A small package filled with all good things
ee County’s small-town charm and rural landscapes may be among its biggest attractions when looking for quality of life, but it’s fast becoming attractive to young professionals and companies looking to expand. The county, with its county seat in Sanford, saw unprecedented economic success in the past two years when it landed two new companies and the expansion of a third, adding to its already impressive manufacturing base. Lee County saw major dividends 4 Herald ► FYI 2021
from its investment in economic development with an expansion at Pfizer, the building of a Bharat Forge, auto component manufacturing plant, and Audentes’ plans to move a gene therapy facility into the shell building at Central Carolina Enterprise Park. Through6, an on-demand, full cut & sew vertical manufacturing operation, announced plans to open a facility in Lee County. The three new manufacturers will bring in over 800 new jobs. City and county leaders are not
only working on bringing jobs, they are also focused on improving parks, schools and housing, with new housing developments in the works to meet the growing demand. A $25 million multi-sport athletic complex is in the works, featuring baseball, football/soccer fields and more on 125 acres. Phase 1 of a master plan to upgrade and improve county parks is also under way. A great quality of life, safe and relaxed atmosphere, affordable cost of living, plenty of attractions and activities
of all sorts and moderate weather are all the reasons why people choose to live here. The area is considerably warmer than communities in the northeast and midwest, but moderate enough to provide a taste of all four seasons. Our geographic location also has a “goldilocks” quality to it. We’re close to the hustle and bustle of the RaleighDurham Triangle and Fayetteville/ Fort Bragg, but far enough away to experience a more manageable cost of living.

Established in 1907 from portions of Moore and Chatham counties three decades before Lee County was created, Sanford initially thrived as a railroad town, with business leaders and traveling vaudeville performers seeking their fortunes along the Western and Chatham lines. Some historic features of the railroad can still be found in Lee County, namely the historic Depot Park, a popular location for weekend concerts and movies, community awareness events and rallies or just a nice night out. With an open field and events bandstand, the park is the perfect place to bring
people together. At the intersection of two railroad tracks, the old, brick railroad depot can still be found in the park, along with the Railroad House, now a local history museum open most weekend afternoons. While trains still pass through, Sanford is now better known for its
arts and culture. Local artists engage in everything from painting, to pottery to furniture making, carrying on a rich tradition of folk art and artistic functionality. Sanford has enjoyed steady growth during its history from about 236 residents in 1880 to nearly 30,000 today, according to estimates. Herald ► FYI 2021 5
► SISTER CITIES: Yixing, China
Sanford is sister cities with Yixing, China, a relationship built on clay. Or, pottery, to be exact. Located about 130 miles west of Shanghai, Yixing is also known for pottery, especially its hallmark zisha teapots, and mirrors Sanford’s economic success with contemporary industry. But there are obvious differences between the international sisters. Yixing has considerably more people — about 1.24 million, according to recent estimates — and was established about 221 B.C. during the Qin Dynasty, making the city in Jiangsu province considerably older. Atizapán de Zaragoza, Mexico A delegation from Atizapán de Zaragoza traveled to Sanford in October 2019 for the official signing ceremony. The most populous municipality in Mexico with more than 1 million people, Atizapán de Zaragoza is part of the metropolitan area of Mexico City, which has 22 million people. Some commonalities with Sanford include a love of art, an open-forbusiness philosophy, and a vision for prosperity that includes investments in technology and education. The Jonesboro Rotary Club’s long standing relationship with the Club Rotario Las Torres Satelite provided the backbone of Sanford’s connection with Atizapán de Zaragoza. The two clubs have worked together for years on infrastructure projects in Mexico.
Broadway

So much to see and so much to do

he jewel of Lee County’s events calendar is the Lee Regional Fair which brings people from far and wide to enjoy its wide selection of rides, attractions, competitions and of course, the food — with everything from traditional corn dogs and cotton candy to Oreo crumble Nutella funnel cake. Aside from your typical midway attractions, the Regional Fair also has agriculture exhibits, shows and competitions, with judging in categories like field crops, horticulture, baked goods, handicrafts, sewing, artwork, photography, beer, cider and wine. Plus cook-offs for cakes, chili, sweet potato pie and cookies. The 2019 fair welcomed over 29,900 fairgoers through its gates. Awards and premiums paid to exhibitors and pageant scholarships exceeded $25,000 and a total of 100 youth exhibitors and 174 adult exhibitors showcased their talents. The 2020 fair was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
DOWNTOWN STREETFEST & FIREWORKS FESTIVAL, introduced to the community in 2017, has proven to be very popular. The event takes place throughout Sanford’s beautiful downtown and is filled

The 2021 celebration is Oct. 9, beginning at noon and will conclude with a grand display of fireworks over Depot Park. THE SOUTHERN SIDE BY SIDE CHAMPIONSHIP AT DEEP RIVER SPORTING CLAYS competition, is April 22-25, and will welcome shooting competitors and vendors from around the world. The year always ends strongly in downtown Sanford as the season comes alive with the annual Christmas Parade. In 2019, some 90 entries wove their way through the city for a crowd of hundreds braving the cold temps, ending with Santa Claus and his bride atop a massive sleigh. There was no parade in 2020 due to covid-19. The night time parade, organized by the Central Carolina Jaycees, is held the first Monday in December each year. With plenty of events going on throughout the year, whether you’re young or old, there is sure to be something fun for you in Lee County.

► CIRCLE M CITY This Western replica town is a Wild West entertainment destination for weddings and events. Every Monday the town is open to the public with free bluegrass music at 7 p.m. at 74 Cowboy Lane, Sanford.

SOCIETY OF SHAGGERS
This social is held monthly from 7:30-11:30 p.m. the third Friday at the VFW, 1500 Webb St., Sanford. The cost is $8 for guests. New members and visitors are welcome.

A local farmer’s market that’s held Saturdays, 8 a.m. - 11 a.m., April 24 November 13. The market is located in the parking lot across from Yarborough’s Ice Cream, behind the Buggy Factory.
►ONE DEPOT, ONE PICNIC / DOWNTOWN GIVES BACK
On April 22 join the City of Sanford, Downtown Sanford, Inc. and the Visit Sanford Tourism Development Authority for One Depot...One Picnic, a community picnic to be enjoyed in the park or as a to-go meal at home. The event will be held as a continued effort to raise funds to renovate the historic Sanford Depot Building - the future Welcome Center. The free outdoor concert series kicks off Aug. 26, and will host music on Steele Street and in Depot Park. ► ONE TABLE, ONE DEPOT
On October 21 join the City of Sanford, Downtown Sanford, Inc., and the Visit Sanford Tourism Development Authority for One Table…One Depot, a community supper held on the side street adjacent to Depot Park. One Table…One Depot will be held as the capital campaign continues to raise funds to renovate the historic Sanford Depot building. The goal of the campaign is to turn the building into the home of a state-of-the-art welcome center, and provide offices for Downtown Sanford, Inc. and the Visit Sanford Tourism Development Authority. Local downtown chefs are collaborating on a specially prepared seasonal farm-to-fork menu. This is a ticketed family friendly event.
► BOO AND BREW GHOST TOUR
Experience a frighteningly awesome evening at the Boo & Brew Ghost Tour! Brave souls who enjoy tasty beer and a good haunting should make their way to one of the five downtown Sanford locations to grab your commemorative cup for drinks. From there, pub crawlers can download the Otocast app on their smart device to start the audio tour. While the tour takes crawlers to Libations 139, Hugger Mugger Brewing Company, Local Joe’s Tap & Grill, La Dolce Vita Pizzeria or Smoke & Barrel in that order, you’re free to make your way around town in whatever fashion you choose. No shortage of art here
I
t’s easy to see there is a vibrant arts community in Lee County. One need look no further than the nearly one dozen buildings (with more in the works) hosting large murals dedicated to the area’s culture and unlocking our history. Sanford’s Appearance Commission has guided the creation of the historical murals in downtown Sanford and Jonesboro.
But art here doesn’t live just on walls. It comes alive in places like the Temple Theatre, which produces numerous professional shows each year, from dramas, to comedies, to musicals and live music performances. Music is central to arts in Lee County. For classical music lovers, there’s the Lee County Community Orchestra, which has been producing high quality shows for more than 30 years. Several well-established groups broaden the county’s cultural horizons, to include the Sanford Brush & Palette Club, which produces a popular art show each year. The Lee County Arts Council, in its 43rd year, plays a part, constantly holding events and placing a spotlight on local artists. The council is committed to fostering art appreciation and artistic expression in Lee County through public events, educational classes and grant opportunities. 12 Herald ► FYI 2021

Several small local museums and memorials focus on Lee County’s natural and cultural history, providing an engaging look into the past.
► ENDOR IRON FURNACE AND TRAIL
Standing along the Deep River in northern Lee County, the Endor Iron Furnace was built to
turn local iron ore deposits into pig iron during the Civil War. Dormant for about 130 years, the location is now owned by the State of North Carolina with preservation and restoration efforts being organized by a committee of the Railroad House Historical Association. Their goal is to transform the site into a park. The Endor Trail, a greenway stretching from Kiwanis Family Park in Sanford to the furnace site, is also being developed.

► HISTORIC RAILROAD HOUSE MUSEUM
Housed in a historic building tied to Sanford’s past, the Historic Railroad House Museum interprets local history with objects, large and small, spanning some 150 million years. The collection includes fossilized remains of ancient ruminants, hand-crafted Native American tools, a Victorian-era organ, art pottery manufactured by nationally renowned North State and A.R. Coty commits resources to combat COVID-19
A
s many local businesses felt the impact of COVID-19, some adjusted their manufacturing to battle the virus.
In April 2020, local Cosmetics manufacturer Coty joined the fight against the coronavirus at its Sanford plant by churning out tens of thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer per week for local first responders. The manufacturing plant on Broadway Road, which employs hundreds, makes skin care products, nail polish and perfume. “It was an easy conversion for us to do. It’s a relatively simple product to make,” said company spokesperson Amy Juaristi. “We’re in an 16 Herald ► FYI 2021
unprecedented situation and I think we’re seeing it across our community, that everyone is doing what they can to help and this was one thing that we could easily do.” The hand sanitizer was donated to local hospitals and pharmacies. Bottles were shipped through Coty’s normal distribution channels, to nurses, doctors, law enforcement and firefighters. Each bottle, repurposed from their cosmetic line, contains one fluid ounce of hand sanitizer, with a label that reads, “Dedicated to 1st responders supporting our communities.” The bottles, Juaristi said, will go to “the people who are keeping us all going right now.”

Lee County Schools react to protect students, staff
onths before the first day of school in August, Lee County education officials knew that the 2020-21 school year was going to be unlike any that had come before. When the first case of COVID-19 appeared in North Carolina in March, Superintendent Andy Bryan and central office staff were already working on a plan for virtual education. But as the coronavirus pandemic worsened, the Lee County Board of Education struggled to keep up with shifting state guidelines.
The school district’s response to
the pandemic has often been likened to building a plane whilst flying it, as
education leaders faced a host of new
and unprecedented challenges. In the immediate aftermath of COVID-19, Lee County schools closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. Students across the county were sent home with their last semester of school unfinished. More changes soon followed. In an effort to continue education, the district started handing out laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots to students. A breakfast and lunch pick-up program was quickly arranged so children would be fed, with cafeteria workers and volunteers handing out thousands of meals each week. Traditional high school graduation ceremonies for the 2019-20
school year were cancelled, with the district instead arranging drive-thru ceremonies. After more than a year of living with the coronavirus, people are now eminently familiar with wearing masks, washing hands and staying 6-feet apart. That includes teachers, who have adapted to a new system of virtual and in-person education. The district has continued its efforts to both improve its virtual education and reopen schools. Now, as COVID-19 vaccines are distributed, parents, teachers and students look forward to the day that they will soon be able to return to traditional education.

As superintendent, he has expanded educational opportunity by introducing the AVID college readiness initiative and NAF academies to local schools, allowing students to graduate with more than a high school diploma. He is a graduate of Longwood University and holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Virginia.

An opportunity to serve
A
simple empty shoebox could be the start of something special for needy young children in another country during the Christmas season. Alice Gilchrist, a member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church, believes it all starts with what is put in the shoebox. For 17 years the church has served as a drop-off location for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child program. The program solicits shoeboxes filled with things like toothbrushes, hygiene items, clothing and small toys. Samaritan’s Purse is a nonprofit Christian organization dedicated
to helping the less fortunate. The
shoeboxes will be given to children in poor countries internationally. Gilchrist says the boxes are sent to Europe, Asia, Africa, all over the world. “It’s one of the easiest projects that anybody can do. It’s tremendous the joy this can spread.” She said that lotions, liquids and toy guns are verboten, but shirts and socks are great items to include. “What people usually do is decide what age and gender for the child you’d like to give (to) and pack your shoebox accordingly, Gilchrist explained. The age range for shoebox
recipients is from 2 to 14 years old. A donation of $9 for postage is also required with each shoebox. The program is successful in this area, collecting over 12,000 shoeboxes from people all over Lee and surrounding counties. The impact the shoeboxes make on those who are less fortunate goes a long way. “We provide a book in the box where they read in their language about the story of Jesus,” she said. “One shoebox can impact an entire family. It’s a joyous way to spread love during Christmastime and the word of God.”

County government facilities expand to keep up with growth
A
s the area continued to grow, renovations topped the list of projects for Lee County in 2020.
The Register of Deeds Office was growing cramped, so the Board of Commissioners agreed to plan to move it into the former Fire Place building, next to the courthouse complex on South Horner Boulevard. The building, which once served as a Sanford Fire Department station, was gutted and redone to accommodate technology and create more space. Work was to begin in March on renovations on the first floor of the Historic Courthouse, which dates to 1908. Once completed, the District Attorney’s Office will be relocated there while work is done on the newer courthouse. The county also purchased property on Douglas Drive which now houses its IT department and the County of Lee Transportation System (COLTS).

L
ee County is home to scores of nonprofits that help not only those in need but the volunteers who pitch in.
And the good news is, volunteers often feel they benefit more from volunteering than the organizations they’re helping, so it’s a win-win for everyone. Volunteers should know that their efforts really help charitable organizations overcome the financial hurdles of meeting their missions. According to studies, the value of a volunteer hour is more than $24. So for every hour volunteers work for their favorite charities, they’re saving those charities money that can then
be used to achieve their missions. Among the many programs that help lift people up in the community is the city’s homelessness task force — S3 Housing Connect — helps those without a steady place to stay and aims to eradicate homelessness in the area. Christians United Outreach Center runs the BackPack Pals program, which provides food to students in need and during the summer when they don’t have the luxury of a school lunch. Among its many duties, Lee County Social Services offers financial as well as job training and placement, youth work permits, aid
to the blind and much more. Boys & Girls Clubs provide educational and recreational opportunities after school and during the summer for children giving parents the peace of mind they need while working to maintain their families. There are also services available countywide to meet specific needs from cancer patients getting free rides to their appointments with Highway to Healing, to domestic violence survivors can find refuge within HAVEN in Lee County. Sanford offers the best qualities of a growing city and a small town

nown as the “Well-Centered” community, Sanford is midway between coastal North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and the Research Triangle Park are all within an hour’s drive.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sanford’s population in 2019 was 30,085 and has its own thriving programs in arts and performances including the renowned Temple Theatre, home to a variety of plays and musicals that are offered year-round. The city’s rich history is 46 Herald ► FYI 2021
documented in murals painted on brick buildings in the central business district recognizing soldiers of World War II, who left their loved ones behind as they boarded a train in Sanford as they headed to battle; another pays homage to hometown pilots who did battle in the skies over Europe and in the Pacific Theatre. Another honors hometown hero, the late Herb Thomas, who was NASCAR’s Grand National Series Champion in 1951 and 1953. The city’s African-American culture is honored with a mural of two of Lee County’s great leaders in
education, W.B. Wicker and A.L. “Link” Boykin. The housing market has grown in recent years as Lee County lures new businesses and industries. More than two subdivisions are in the works, but drive a few miles down the road and chances are you’ll find a grassy pasture that’s home to horses or cows enjoying a meal. Average housing prices range from between $150,000 to $200,000 and Sanford has a wealth of Realtors to help in the hunt for the perfect home.

ee County residents confirmed their commitment to a top-notch recreation system last year as voters approved a $25 million bond referendum to fund construction of a 125 acre multi-sport complex to be built on Broadway Road near U.S. 421. The
multi-field facility, as planned, will consist of 8 natural grass and 2 synthetic rectangular fields, suitable for football and soccer, 5 natural grass baseball/softball diamonds, volleyball courts, disc golf, walking trails and playgrounds.

LEARNING ON THE LINKS
Young golfers, maybe with many years of golf ahead of them, get to take over Sanford Golf Course for a week each summer. Each summer, in July, the course’s hosts the Youth Golf Camp. Each morning, hopefully before the July heat and humidity get too tough, boys and girls ages 9-14 are invited to learn the game, from the very basics, to learning the game’s etiquette and going out on the course for a tournament by the last day of camp. Each year, about 60 kids have fun while learning fundamentals and sportsmanship.Course pros and players who are or, not so long ago, were standout high school, college and pro tour players serve as teachers and camp counselors. The day after camp ends, Sanford Golf Course hosts its traditional Sanford Exchange Club ParentChild Tournament. The day is an opportunity for parents and kids, from the kids showing off what they’ve just learned during the week, to parents and children who’ve played Sanford Golf Course going back decades, to compete and have fun. Exactly what kind of license you need can be a trickier question. There are several options depending on where you’re fishing (inland or the coast) and how long the license is valid. HOW DO I OBTAIN ADVANCE HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVES THAT DON’T COST A LOT? Thanks to Lee County Senior Services, many seniors can obtain these legal documents free of charge. They include the Living Will, a written statement
detailing the kind of medical care you want to receive if you become incapacitated, and the Health Care Power of Attorney, which appoints someone you trust to make necessary health care decisions for you if you are not able to make them for yourself. Athletic and artistic events are held each spring with local qualifiers invited to participate in the North Carolina Senior Games State Finals, held each fall in Raleigh. Every two years, state winners qualify to represent North Carolina in the National Senior Games. Local participants must be Lee County residents and at least 50 years of age.
