SANFORD BLOCK PARTY WHEN: April WHAT: Each year, the community comes together to clean up and beautify a specified area of town. This can include painting, mowing, raking and landscaping. BROADWAY OUR WAY WHEN: April WHAT: The event includes a street fair with various vendors and classic cars and an antique tractor display. There’s plenty of entertainment throughout the day, with kids activities and music on Main Street. WHERE: Main Street, Broadway RELAY FOR LIFE WHEN: May WHAT: Relay for Life is a national event that raises awareness of cancer and raises money for cancer research. The event honors those who have or had cancer and those who have died because of the disease. The Survivor and Caregiver walk and the luminaria walk are the event’s mainstays. Each light for the luminaria walk represents a life—a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a support for a person still fighting the disease. WHERE: Lions Club Fairgrounds, 505 N. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT WHEN: August WHAT: National Night Out aims to strengthen community ties and improve relationships between the police and residents. Organizers throughout the county host their own events that feature food, games and music. Throughout the evening, a law enforcement official will visit each location and interact with attendees. WHERE: Various locations in Lee County LEE REGIONAL FAIR WHEN: September 14-19 WHAT: The Lee Regional Fair is a yearly staple, offering food, rides and more. Food choices include funnel cakes, fried macaroni cheese balls, the Lions Club burger and other fair favorites. WHERE: Lions Club Fairgrounds, 505 N. Seventh St., Sanford, N.C, 27330 SANFORD BRUSH AND PALETTE CLUB’S ANNUAL ART SHOW WHEN: October WHAT: This year’s 57th annual exhibition features art from the club’s nearly 100 members and includes works ranging from painting, pottery, mixed media, and sculpture. RETURNS WITH A BANG!

ast November, Deep River Sporting Clays and Shooting School was without founders Bill and Mary Kempffer for the first time in its history - going back more than 30 years. The Kempffers still have yet to miss the hallmark event of Deep

River’s year, and for many the major event worldwide for side-by-side shotgun competition, because even a few months into retirement, and now living in Georgia, Bill and Mary were two of the more than 1,500 visitors to Lee County and Deep River in April for the Southern

Side by Side Championship and Exhibition. Ed Strickland, who nearly 30 years ago became a student of Bill Kempffer, is the new president and COO. He had the honor - as he puts it - of running the first Southern Side by Side since spring 2019. Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2021 ◀ 7

While only one edition was missed due to the coronavirus pandemic, when it’s an annual event, and one of the only events of its kind in the whole world of side-by-side shotgun sportsmanship, going two years without the excitement, past friends and camaraderie felt as though it was forever. Strickland has the continuing responsibility of taking up the torch for the couple who envisioned, made possible and ran everything from the big championship each year to teaching new shooters how to be safe and enjoy everything to do with the sport as much as they do. “It’s a script you can’t write,” said Strickland. “I’d never have envisioned, from the first couple meetings Bill and I had, I’d be the president and leading the team here. It’s an honor to be truthful with you. It really is. People say, ‘you have big shoes to fill.’ But I gave up on that right away. I can’t fill their shoes, but I can follow their path and that’s how I look at it.” The script with Strickland’s love for Deep River, in northern Lee County, 8 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2021

is almost as long as the Kempffers. In the early ‘90s, Strickland and his two sons, already outdoor sportsmen and hunters, started taking lessons and enjoying a lot of days at the clay range and

shooting school. Life got busier. His sons played baseball, which means many weekends and a bunch of free time gets spoken for. It was years later when Strickland reconnected with

Deep River and the Kempffers. Strickland asked to teach handgun courses at Deep River. Bill wanted to expand Deep River into that area already. “He then said, ‘why don’t you just come to work here?’” Strickland said. “I hadn’t thought about it. So then I started part-time with the school, teaching the handgun side,” he said. He started teaching shotgun courses as well. Then the work became full-time, about nine years ago. The big circle on the schedule is the Southern Side by Side. It’s many trophies to be won, a massive family reunion, a fascinating shopping mall of sports, elaborate displays suited for a museum, history, clothing, food and tourism and more stories than a golf tournament or a fishing trip.

This April’s championship and exhibition wasn’t as international as past celebrations. Typically many enthusiasts, competitors and vendors from Europe and Australia come to Deep River. Recruiting more eager vendors was not a problem and the tents were still maxed out. Making more space might be a problem come next spring. It’s a good problem to have. “Before people left Sunday, the vendors were already telling us they’d had a great time and already 10 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2021

signing up to exhibit next year,” said Strickland. Other than doing business, another valuable part of the Southern Side by Side applies to any other time of the year. Being outdoors and enjoying a sport - at whatever expertise level - has a wide array of benefits. Certified instructors, for handgun and shotgun, help anyone who’s new be safe and confident. Deep River’s calendar is more about individual lessons, concealed carry classes, charity

events for many local causes and organizations, fun shoots and ladies days than the four big days each April. Strickland likens it to learning to drive as a teenager. There are nerves. Some new experiences, such as passing another vehicle a few feet away on an interstate, can feel different and there’s good reason for the nerves. Soon, doing the same thing on I-95 is second nature. Repetition, learning and being safe apply to firearms for safety and sport. The learning and improving never stops though and, Strickland said, every safe shooter knows there should be confidence, but never complacency. From world-class competition to the only competition being yourself, the health and wellness benefits of being outside, walking the course, enjoying time away from whatever it’s a good idea to take a break from and, in this day, definite socialdistancing, are all a part of Deep River, from the time the Kempffers put it into existence. “People come here to get away from the day to day grind and enjoy

just being out,” Strickland said. In 2020 in particular, Deep River had it’s most popular year because it was a unique, entertaining and educational alternative - which was open - to way too much sitting in the house. There can be physical exercise and a chance to relax at the same time. “An important part of our mission statement is to offer respite,” Strickland said, “a place to clear the mind.”

PFIZER Pfizer, the world’s largest biopharmaceutical company, announced earlier on August 21, 2019 at their Sanford campus that they would undergo a major facility expansion. The company is investing half a billion dollars to advance its state of the art gene therapy facility. At completion, this project will employ approximately 300 people.

AUDENTES THERAPEUTICS Audentes Therapeutics, an Astellas company based in San Francisco, California, will open a new facility in Lee County, as announced by Governor Roy Cooper on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. The life-sciences company has purchased a recently-completed shell building located in Central Carolina Enterprise Park and will create 209 jobs at an average salary of $83,900. The company will be investing $109.4M in Sanford over a five year period. “With our powerhouse research centers and highly-skilled workforce, biotech pioneers recognize North Carolina’s role as a leader in the life sciences,” said Governor Cooper. “Lee County is a perfect fit for Audentes as they seek to become a global leader in genetic medicines.” Audentes Therapeutics, Inc., an Astellas company, is an AAV-based genetic medicines company focused on developing and commercializing innovative therapies that can offer transformative benefits to patients.

“What really drove us was the interaction we had with the mayor and local government officials...They brought everybody up for us,” explained Audentes Senior Vice President of Technical Operations Don Wuchterl (pictured below). “No one else did that.” The recognition afforded Sanford by ranking as the fifth best micropolitan community in the United States is hard won and well-deserved, and it is no surprise to those in the community who’ve worked so hard for more than a decade to prepare and position us for this level of economic development success.

The Site Selection Magazine editors noted that Sanford has far exceeded the expectations of other predictive economic development rankings which place our community closer to the middle of the pack. he first Carolina Indie Fest, a musical festival and street fair will be held Sept. 18-19 in downtown Sanford.

It will feature 45 musicians, locally and nationally known, performing on three stages -two outdoor and one indoor at Hugger Mugger Brewery. “It’s going to be awesome,” said Wendy Bryan, executive president of the Sanford Tourism Authority, a co-host of the event. “This came about with a conversation with the Cliff Wheeler Band,” said Tim Emmert, co-owner of Hugger Mugger Brewery. The Southern rock and blues band is based in Lemon Springs. The band is nationally known and has won multiple awards, according to its website. “It came out of a conversation that it’s nice to have live music, but the challenge is when you

ACCIDENTAL5 have one band,” Emmert said. “About half the people love the band, but the other may not.” A possible solution would be to have a larger footprint and provide several bands, which would give attendees options to choose from.

“That’s where it started,” Emmert said. Organizers of the South by Southwest Indie Fest, which draws musical artists around the globe, visited Sanford and thought it would be perfect for a festival.

“They came to visit, loved the downtown and said it was perfect, that it really lends itself to a rock and roll experience in terms of layout,” Emmert said. The main stage will be located on Wicker Street, near South Horner Boulevard. “People can bring chairs and sit as close and far away as possible,” Emmert said. The second stage will be on an elevated platform overlooking a beer garden that will be set up behind Hugger Mugger. The third stage will be in the brewery and will feature mostly acoustic musicians, Emmert said. The main music will be

WICKER HAS HEART FOR

any people know that Dennis Wicker has a big heart for Sanford and Lee County. The former legislator and lieutenant governor grew up in Sanford and even played on back-to-back high school football championships here in Lee County. He’s also known as the man for whom the Civic Center on the campus of Central Carolina Community College is named. In fact, Wicker has spent his life working to help the community college system in North Carolina and has been a part of the Lee County Education Foundation. But few people know that the man with the big heart had a weak heart until recently. Wicker first had open heart surgery in 2003 — a quadruple bypass. His surgery happened shortly after he left politics following a loss to Mike Easley in the governor’s race. Wicker, now an attorney in Raleigh, who still lives in the house he grew up in in Sanford, had a heart transplant about a year and a half ago, and is now doing better than ever. In 2015, heart failure nearly killed the man who had served as North Carolina’s 31st lieutenant governor under Gov. Jim Hunt. As a matter of fact, Wicker collapsed during a trip and his wife, Alisa, had to perform CPR while awaiting the arrival of paramedics. He was clinically dead — then revived. He eventually recovered and 20 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2021

But doctors knew his weakening heart would continue to be a problem. “I think it’s rare that a person can become a member of the ‘zipper club’ twice,” Wicker said with a grin. “The first time was with my quadruple bypass and the second was when I had my heart transplant. I think they were two experiences that taught me different things. The first time I had open heart surgery, I was a lot more circumspect about my health.” Wicker said as a younger man he had not paid as much attention to his health as he maybe should have. “After that surgery, I began to really become aware of my health — I was 50 years old,” said Wicker, who is currently 68. “I took care of it. I tried to watch what I ate. I was still active and even still water skied once I healed up. But then they detected some things that just weren’t working well with my heart — it got progressively worse. We finally determined that it was heart failure and it accelerated very rapidly.” Wicker said the second surgery — the transplant — has given him a different perspective.

“It’s not only about taking care of your health,” he said. “It gives you great insight into how kind and generous people are — because a donor gave me this heart. The donor and their family gave me this heart. They didn’t have to do that. Had they not done it, I don’t know if I would be here or not. I think about him every day. I wish one day that I would have a chance to meet the family and tell them how much I love them for allowing me to have a few more days here.” The transplant was life-changing for the better both physically and mentally, according to Wicker. “I can exercise more now than I could before the surgery,” he said. “I can be more active now. The good news was that when I had this transplant, the rest of my body was in pretty good shape. Because after the first episode of open heart surgery I was taking care of myself. Because of that I can be very active now — I’ve even contemplated water skiing again — I haven’t run that by my doctor yet. I’ve thought about it. I know I’m much better off physically than I have been since my late 40s.” Wicker said he knew almost instantly after the surgery that he would be stronger and healthier.

Wicker played for the legendary Sanford Central coach and was part of back-to-back state championships in 1972 and 1973. “The first thing that I remember coming out of it that was immediate was pain and the weakness,” he said. “After that, I realized how smooth my heart was beating. You could actually feel it. Before, I had an irregular heartbeat. It would gallop, it would slow down. You could hear it take off on you. With this heart I have now, it’s clear that it’s a healthy heart — a happy heart. I feel better because of it.” Wicker is back at work. He’s out enjoying his children and grandchildren and time with his wife. “I really don’t have any limits or restrictions,” he said. “My doctors want me to watch what I eat and keep my weight down. They haven’t told me I need to slow down or do anything different. I actually think that I can think better because blood is flowing better to my brain. It’s been a real blessing for me to have a second chance in life. I’m very happy playing with those grandkids, doing work in my yard, getting on the boat at the lake and doing things that I want to do. It’s been a real change in my life for the better. It’s been a lot more positive since then. I just had a bad heart up until about a year and a 22 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2021

half ago.” Wicker said that since leaving the limelight of politics he’s been busy. “I’ve been practicing law with a very fine law firm in Raleigh (Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough) and there are about 800 lawyers in the firm across the country,” he said. “I practice law in the government relations and regulatory field, which I enjoy.” Wicker is also active in the community including being a part of the Lee County Education Foundation. “I very much enjoy being active in that,” Wicker said. “I try to stay active in the politics of things — locally and statewide. I also do some articles. I did an Op-Ed piece that was in the News & Observer. It was about the mental health aspect of the pandemic. I enjoy doing things like that.” There’s also a lot to do around the house and with family. “I just enjoy life a lot more than I did when I was in public office,” he said. “I know politicians get a bad rap — some deserve it — some don’t. I would say that generally speaking, the overwhelming majority of people that serve in public

office are good, conscientious public servants. They really do care about trying to help people. It’s hard work and stressful work. I don’t think the public realizes how hard and stressful serving the public is. I’m not just talking about elected officials — I mean anybody who works with the public. All of them really care about what they do and want people to stay healthy and vibrant and live a good quality of life.” Wicker said he enjoyed his years in the legislature and service as lieutenant governor. “I wouldn’t trade any of it,” he said. “It was so gratifying that you could find ways and the resources to help people. I was committed to it and dedicated to it. Whatever success I had in public service, I would hope that what little part I did helped tomato things better for the future. I think part of what we should do in life is try to make things better for people who come behind us and do things for the greater good. That sounds corny, maybe, sappy, maybe, but to me it’s absolutely the truth. I hold those ideals and those principals that we have an obligation to serve the public and do something to give back to people.”

DRAWING CUTTING EDGE INDUSTRIES

ne of Lee County’s crown jewels is Central Carolina Enterprise Park, a fastgrowing conglomeration of cuttingedge industries. The 250-acre park located off Colon Road near U.S. 1 has become a hot commodity in the economic development realm in recent years. It’s owned by Central Carolina Enterprise Park LLC. The Sanford Area Growth Alliance, the City of Sanford and Lee County have worked together to land the projects. The main draws are the location and spec buildings - shell buildings that allow a business to upfit the interior to specific needs. 26 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2021

The park’s proximity to Raleigh and the Research Triangle Park give it a “unique positioning,” said Bob Joyce, senior director of Business Retention and Expansion. “The unique positioning of the park in the marketplace as well as its location in North Carolina gives us a huge competitive advantage. The buildings are constructed as a warehouse with the interiors unfinished. The concept allows industries and manufacturers to complete the interior and other facets of the building to suit. It can save a manufacturer up to two years in planning and starting construction, according to Joyce. “In five short years, our team has

developed CCEP as one of the Southeast’s premier shovel-ready manufacturing and distribution parks,” Joyce said. Two shell buildings are now occupied and plans are underway for a third facility. The shell buildings are now home to Astellas Gene Therapies (formerly Audentes Therapies) and Abzena, another life-sciences operation. Astellas, a California-based company, announced in 2020, that it would open a facility in the first shell building which contains 135,000 square feet. The company will bring an investment of $109.4 million over a five-year period and the creation

of 290 jobs at an average salary of $83,900. Abzena, a San Diego-based life sciences group announced in April would open a facility in the 117,000foot second shell building. The company plans to hire 325 employees at an average salary of $60,000, according to the Sanford Area Growth Alliance. The company plans to invest $213 million in the county based on construction needs and the installation and purchase of machinery, according to Jimmy Randolph, SAGA’s chief executive officer. Two confirmed but unannounced occupants will be moving into the park, according to Joyce, while plans are underway for a third shell building. “With several others on the drawing board, it is entirely possible that we will reach a half-billion dollars in new investment at CCEP,” Joyce said.

GROWING INTO A NEW HOME

fter more than 20 years of moving around, the Sanford Farmers’ Market is finally getting a permanent home. Everything was business as usual when the 22nd annual farmers’ market kicked off in April, but if all goes to plan, the market will experience massive expansion next year. Thanks to a $505,000 grant from chicken processing company Pilgrim’s, plans to give the market its own building are coming to fruition.

The renovation Pilgrim’s announced in March it would fund renovations to the former King Roofing, Heating and Air Building, a 100-year-old structure at 157 Charlotte Ave. now owned by the city. By the end of 2021, rebuilding is expected to be complete. The 10,000-square-foot building will be transformed into the Sanford Agricultural Marketplace, home to the city’s farmers’ market as well as a kitchen, classroom and office space, said Joni Martin of Progressive Contracting Company, which is renovating

the space. In addition to housing the farmers’ market, Mann said there are plans to eventually use the space for community events like cooking classes, agribusinesses and 4-H Club meetings, civic events, education courses and bilingual classes. Mayor Chet Mann said he’d like to see a new restaurant open in the rear portion of the building. The city can seek another grant to help finish that project or partner with interested investors. Mann said he hopes the renovation will be another step in revitalizing East Sanford.

Meanwhile, the Sanford Farmers’ Market will get a year-round home. Currently, the market operates on a May to October schedule. The contractor, Martin, said she hopes the new location will allow the market to open more than just one day a week and operate during the off-season, selling things like pumpkins and Christmas trees. Martin said they aim to open the market in September, just in time for fall. Workers will be replacing the building’s siding, tearing out some partitions and interior walls, and installing new lighting, fans and bathrooms, she said. They will also be installing a sound system, garage doors for vendors and potentially an office for the market manager. Wood from the building will be

reused to make tables. The city is working in partnership with the N.C. Cooperative Extension and Downtown Sanford, Inc., whose leaders have long been in favor of expanding the market. “We are beyond thrilled,” said

Kelli Laudate, executive director of Downtown Sanford, Inc. “We are just so excited to begin this project. It really will continue the revitalization that has already happened in downtown Sanford. It’s just one more piece to that puzzle.”

The market After years on the outskirts of the city at the McSwain Center, the market came back downtown in 2020, setting up shop in the parking lot behind the Buggy Co. Building. The change was enthusiastically welcomed by city residents, many of whom had more access to the market because of its central location. The coronavirus pandemic complicated plans to relocate the market, but in the end, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. As the state went into lockdown and restaurants, retail stores and movie theaters closed, the farmers’ market remained one of the only safe places for people to go. The outdoor setting meant people could safely social distance while still getting out of the house. It also gave Downtown Sanford Inc. a venue for live music since its usual concert series was cancelled. The opening day of the farmers’ market last year drew hundreds of people downtown throughout the day. “It’s connecting people to food,” former Market Manager Josh Hodge said at the time. “We’re supposed to be staying in, but it is a way to stay safe, get out, see some produce, bring in spring and summer.”

All the coaches and volunteers who make Sanford Area Soccer League run have a long-range outlook. It’s not just to the next match, or next season, or even the next level of soccer - although for some SASL players the next level will go all the way to major competitions and trophies, then maybe even college or pro playing opportunities. It even reaches past soccer. Head out to SASL’s main fields at the Lee County Fairgrounds or at Deep River Northview Optimist Park on a morning when there’s play 32 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2021

on every field and it’s one of the largest community gatherings in the county. About 800 players a year, from ages 3-18, play in SASL. The soccer action ranges from toddlers in Future Footballers to many age groups having fun and getting to play for rec teams to competitive, highlevel, Challenge and Classic league matches. SASL has had and is having great successes on the pitch. SASL Thunder, a U16 Classic club, won its way to the NCYSA Premier League, the top NCYSA level in the state, for this next season. The true mission, though, is about more than titles or league standings.

“They (the kids) will be us in 20 years,” said league executive administrator Mary-Jo Thompson, “and we want them to have the most positive opportunities to take over for and do even better than us with their own children and this community.” “Providing instructional and competitive youth soccer opportunities that enhance character, community and love of the game of soccer,” is the league’s stated mission. “What we want is to see our youth grow not just as soccer players, but as human beings in character, motivation, teamwork, leadership and drive towards personal achievement,” said Thompson.

SASL’s fall recreation league will kick off again in August. Registration is available online now at sasl.net.

Coaching ‘em Up SASL’s coaches, all volunteers, make everything work. In a few instances, yes, it’s about making the right coaching calls in a key match against a club from Raleigh in a tournament final. A lot more often, the coaches are there for more important reasons. Coaches devote a lot more of their otherwise free time to the practices and games themselves, but also in getting ready, preparing ahead of time, in travel; they go above and beyond when they are already doing it for free, then less than free. “Most (coaches) purchase their own equipment because SASL survives at the bare minimum, so we don’t have the funds to purchase equipment for each team,” said Thompson. Coaches frequently help pay for player registration fees or uniforms. They pick up and drop off players for practices and games. They raise, or even pay, the funds for tournament entry fees as, for the upper level travel clubs, SASL can fund one

tournament per season, but to play more than the regular league and one tournament, teams must come up with those funds on their own. “Most people do not realize how much time goes into coaching,”

Getting on the Pitch The organization is always looking for sponsorship partners which make everything from fields and basic equipment, up to scholarships and coach licensing more possible. The SASL website, sasl.net, has info to assist anyone interested in getting into being a referee. Soccer and many other sports across the state, going from youth and rec sports to high school, are experiencing major needs for more officials and referees. The 2021 fall recreation league, for ages 5-16, is scheduled to begin with practices on or about Aug. 16. Recreation teams do not have tryouts. Players only have to sign up. Every player who registers within the registration period are guaranteed a spot on a team. Fun in the focus. Every player is guaranteed to play at least half of the game. Rec games are played at Northview Optimist Park, the Lee County Fairgrounds or Lee County High School’s practice fields.

All Sorts of Growth SASL is growing because of the many efforts of all its volunteers. It is growing because soccer is growing. SASL is growing because all of central North Carolina is growing. The league is also growing with local, professional help, from San Lee Futbol Club. San Lee FC is a semi-pro club now a few years old and in the United Premier Soccer League. The Future Footballer program started with San Lee FC. The club and SASL are teamed through San Lee FC’s Youth Academy Training Program, which gives players ages 8-12 a

In the last three years, SASL has grown from usually having two girls’ teams playing Challenge or Classic seasons to five. SASL’s competitive clubs have always gone up against the “bigger” clubs and “bigger” soccer hubs of the state - often spanning from the coast, from Wilmington and Jacksonville, to the Triangle area and many organizations in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Greensboro and Cary, to the whole Charlotte area. SASl is growing, or at least is looking at the prospects of big growth, with the future of the Multi-Sport Complex by Lee County Parks and Recreation. Such a complex would be the home for tournaments and events which bring visitors to Sanford. That aspect could be great for SASL clubs. More in line with the organization’s mission, though, the main victory in all this hopeful growth, the new sports complex included, would be providing playing and learning opportunities to more players, no matter the soccer skill or wins they ever reach, and being an even more positive force in the community.
