A letter from our Chamber President I know, along with all of Groesbeck, the state of Texas and the entire US population, that we can’t wait for this pandemic to be over. Now that vaccines are becoming available, I strongly encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible. This is our path to getting back to a normal existence. As mentioned before, most chamber activities have been suspended until we get approval that it is safe to start reconvening. We did have a very successful Taste of Groesbeck and Lighted Christmas parade in December. Thanks to all who participated! Christmas at Old Fort Parker was also held in December and was well attended. Volunteers for our Heritage Festival attended on Saturday and handed out flyers promoting our big May event. If you would like a stack of flyers at your business, just let me know and I will be happy to bring them by. The committee for this event has been meeting monthly since October and everything is moving forward. Just as a reminder, this event be held the last weekend in May, 2021 and we will be celebrating Groesbeck’s 150 year anniversary. The Cinch Ranch Sorting National Championships are confirmed for that weekend, a carnival, a parade, and much, much more. Once again, the Ft Hood mounted Colo guard and cavalry have confirmed that they will be in the parade, along with Andy Andersen from Channel 6 as our Parade Marshall. If you would be interested in joining the committee, please let me know. Or if you have ideas that you would like to share, please let me know. There are many things between now and the event that need planning. As always, thank you for your support of the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce. And, most of all, please stay safe and well!!

GROESBECKâ€™S BRICK STREETS

One of the most attractive features of downtown are the historic, brick streets. The City of Groesbeck entered into a contract with the Jaynes Contracting Company in November 1922 to lay 11,860 square yards of brick at a cost of $1.33 per square yard. The brick came from the coal mining and brick-making town of Thurber in Erath County and were larger and harder than ordinary building brick. The work was done during the spring of 1923. A five-inch base of concrete was poured, the bricks were laid by hand upon this base and then were rolled with a steamroller. Next a thin coating of hot asphalt was poured on the surface to run into the spaces between the bricks to seal them. The asphalt that remained on the surface has long since been worn away. On May 1, 1923, the work was accepted by the City of Groesbeck, and the contractor was paid. The total cost of the project was $15,733.80. The Limestone County Museum has an interesting collection of photographs that show the sequence of work done during the street-paving project. Two different sizes of the Thurber brick used in the Groesbeck streets are also on display.

GROESBECK, DID YOU KNOW? Given below are several little tid-bits of local history that readers might find interesting. **** Everyone knows about the tragic sinking of the British cruise liner, the Titanic, and many remember the outstanding movie that was made about this event. But did you know that a Groesbeck couple went down on the Titanic. The couple was Emma and Samuel Risien. The couple operated the hotel in Groesbeck. I believe that the hotel was later known for many years as the Cynthia Ann Hotel which was located on the corner of Navasota and Railroad Streets in Groesbeck. It is understood that the Risiens were originally from England. They had gone to visit and had booked passage on the Titanic to return home. The late Mary Padgett Bryan related to this writer that her family had been engaged to run the hotel while the Risiens were on their trip. The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, in the north Atlantic Ocean. The British ship was on its maiden voyage and was thought to the finest and safest cruise liner ever built and was termed as an “unsinkable” ship by many. However, the Titanic hit an iceberg and then sank. The ship carried 2,224 passengers with over 1,500 perishing. **** The Groesbeck Independent School District was organized in 1890. The first graduating class was in 1896. Groesbeck High School fielded its first football team in 1901 with J. T. Cox serving as coach. Mr. Cox later ran a successful insurance agency in Groesbeck.

In that first year of football the Goats played only one game which was a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Mexia. **** The Groesbeck City Swimming Pool, which is located in the Groesbeck City Park, is one the oldest municipal swimming pools in the state. It was built in 1924. At one time the Groesbeck High School football field was located in the Groesbeck City Park. According to the late Supt. H. O. Whitehurst, Groesbeck had one of the first lighted football fields in Central Texas. **** In 1930 a Groesbeck product was the starting quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies. Will Mills played starting quarterback for Texas A&M in 1930. A great athlete he lettered in four sports at A&M. He was the brother of the late Helen Mills Bond and the uncle of Bill Bond. **** Lions Club International is celebrating its 100th year n 2017. The Groesbeck Lions Club is not far behind as it was founded in 1923. The Groesbeck Lions Club has been very active in local affairs throughout its history. During the dark days of the depression during the 1930s, the Lions Club along with other groups conducted a special day during which they buried “Old Man Gloom”. ***** Listed above are just a few “Did You Know” facts. If any of you Journal readers have any such stories share them with the Journal. Such little short stories are of interest to many readers.

GROESBECK HERITAGE FESTIVAL EVENTS ANNOUNCED The Heritage Festival will be on May 28, 29, 30. It is hoped that the Heritage Festival will be an annual event. However, this year is very special as Groesbeck is celebrating its 150th year as a city. The town was founded in 1871. In upcoming issues of the Journal, some of Groesbeckâ€™s history will be highlighted. Given below is the list of activities that will be taking place during the Heritage Festival. Thanks to Joan McEntyre for providing the Journal with the below information. Carnival (assuming COVID-19 restrictions are not an issue) will start on May 27, and run through May 29. Live music on the north side of the County Courthouse on May 29.

Heritage Parade on May 29. Street vendors on May 28-29 (some will move to the Limestone County Fairgrounds on May 30) Cinch Ranch National Sorting Championships in the arena at the Limestone County Fairgrounds on May 29-30. Non-Denominational Church Service in the arena at the Limestone County Fairgrounds on May 30. Plant Sale at Hawkins Park on May 29. Story tellers, demonstrators, gunfight re-enactors on May 29. First Bale of Cotton for 1951

For many years cotton was king in Limestone County. For a number of years the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce presented a cash prize to person who had the first bale of cotton ginned in Groesbeck. In those days Groesbeck had several cotton gins. As will be noted in the accompanying photograph, Mr. McDonald of Shiloh had the first bale of cotton ginned in Groesbeck in 1951. Chamber of Commerce Structure and Organization

Each chapter of a chamber is governed by a board of directors who advise the chapter on strategies and policies determined by the chapter's mission. The board manages day-to-day affairs and updates the chapter policies. Board members, also referred to as an executive council, are elected within each chapter. Most chapters have an acting president and CEO, for example. Members of the board are elected based on their leadership experience, business background, and ability to execute chapter goals. In addition to a governing board of directors, a chapter will have at least one employee. Some chapters may have more than one employee and be structured like a business. Employees work to market the chapter, in overseeing memberships, and in tracking the chapter's finances. In addition to the employees, a chapter has committees to focus on executing specific goals based on the chapter's mission — such as education, environment, or healthcare. Members of the chapter can volunteer for these committees to get more involved. How a Chamber of Commerce Functions A chamber of commerce chapter is made up of a dues-based membership. Each chapter offers different levels of membership, along with unique volunteer opportunities and a dues structure. 80% of respondents in a Shapiro Group survey were more likely to purchase goods or services in the future from companies belonging to a chamber of commerce. Each chapter is designated as a 501(c)(6) corporation under the federal tax law. This means a chapter is a nonprofit entity with the authority to represent its membership in

matters of policy and debate (unlike charitable organizations that do not act on behalf of members). Dues are required by each member to contribute to the overall operating costs. In addition to dues, a chamber can raise money to cover additional operating costs by holding fundraising activities and charging fees to chamber events. These costs help the chapter stay operational since multiple businesses rely on their local chamber for networking and resources.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

A chapter can be found at the local, state, city, regional, or national level. Some chapters are even associated with specific

neighborhoods within a community. Still others are formed to represent a group of specific business interests. Examples of this include female business owners chapters or the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Since each chapter has its own mission focused on economic vitality throughout a designated area, each can support different industries or initiatives. For example, some focus on economic development while others connect a specific community to local businesses. While each chamber acts independently, multiple chambers can join together to form a larger, collective group serving a similar interest. For instance, several county chapters can join together to form a larger regional chapter to pool together resources.

Our Merry Massey Christmas party featured a duo vocal performance of Christmas classics and hits from the 40s and 50s 2 Art shows: Christ Inspired Artwork by Dorrie Cobb was viewed by many the week of August 5th. The scheduled “Country, Cowboys and Cattle Art Show” was postponed in March and we hope to have Kris Tims back in 2021; Lark Mason of The Antique Road Show held a virtual antique appraisal show for citizens of Limestone County. 33 items were evaluated by the professional in this exclusive online appearance arranged by the Massey Foundation Book Studies: We have three book studies that have been ongoing throughout 2020. The Liberty Readers women’s book club meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, the Early Birds study connects Holy Scripture to world events and meets Tuesday mornings at 7:00. Finally, a Sunday afternoon group reads, discusses and studies classic Christian literature. This group has read: Pilgrim’s Progress, The Screwtape Letters, Where I AM and currently is studying Shaeffer’s How Should We Then Live? 2021 begins with another Lewis classic,: “Out of the Silent Planet”. All studies are free and open to the public. 2 Literary Contests: “2020 In Retrospect: Lessons Learned” is a book of essays that will be published in 2021. Essays from local citizens are being collected and reviewed for publication. All entries are due January 20, 2021 from interested authors, and all are encouraged to participate. In collaboration with the Groesbeck Journal, the Massey Foundation sponsored the annual Poetry Contest in 2020. Massey Missions financially assisted Limestone County Citizens with rent, utility, and medical needs. We are dedicated to continuing our service to Texas and Limestone County in 2021 in the pursuit of Truth, Faith and Liberty. LIFE AT THE OLD PECAN INN FAMILY SESSION, EXTENDED FAMILY SESSION Recently I had a family contact me regarding an Extended Family Session. The session was going to be a surprise gift for the parents, Gary and Pam, in celebration of their 45th wedding anniversary. As I drove to the location I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the Point Enterprise area was, which is located just outside of Mexia, Texas. This quaint little community was covered in large trees and the golden sun was peeking through the leaves kissing the ground. As I drove up the driveway and approached the family home, I noticed an eager family standing outside waiting on me. They were all so welcoming and proceeded to show me around the property where they’d like the portraits to be taken. They had a couch in the front pecan grove, a large windmill out back looking across the green landscape as the sun was setting and a 1971 red Ranchero parked out front. I was looking forward to spending time with this wonderful family that was so excited about capturing the precious memories, along with the history of Gary and Pam, for generations to come. As I walked around with the family from place to place I heard several stories about so many places and things on the property. It was clear that family means a lot to each of them! Family is embedded into nearly everything on the property - pecan trees, the original house with the stones from another piece of family property, the Ranchero and the windmill. After all, the property has been in the family since it was purchased in 1887 by the Franks Family. “Every family has a story...welcome to ours.” HISTORY OF THE OLD PECAN INN T.L. Franks was a Civil War Confederate Army veteran traveled from Houston in search of sandy land to purchase for farming, as well as living. He found 45 acres of a perfect piece of sandy land in Point Enterprise, Texas in 1887.

T.L. used the land to raise food and crops to sustain his family. Cotton and strawberries were raised and sold to help provide the family with money. He planted pecan trees in an orchard and 10 of the original pecan trees are now massive and still growing. They are now over 130 years old and still produce pecans! T.L. Franks had a great-great-granddaughter named Pamela Sue Franks that was born in 1955 while her father, Dan Franks, was in seminary and her mother, Sue Wiggins Franks, was teaching school. Pam grew up in a military family as her parents served 30 years in the United States Air Force. Pam visited Point Enterprise growing up during the summers, but never lived in Texas. However, she dreamed of someday living on the farm she loved to visit. Pam would quilt with her grandmother, Edna, in the Point Enterprise Clubhouse with the Quilting Club when she visited. As a young girl, she often dreamed of quilting in that same clubhouse when she lived on the farm. GARY AND PAM Gary bought his 1971 Ford Ranchero brand new in November of 1971 for $3100 when he was a new airman in the United States Air Force stationed in Denver, Colorado. One year later, Gary and Pam met in the Edwards Air Force Base Chapel. After Pam graduated in 1973, they had their first date in the red Ranchero. He was so nervous, but he prepared note cards to assist him in keeping the conversation going throughout the date. The first card read, “Hi, my name is Gary Smith.” The second card read, “How are you doing tonight?” These were followed by several more cards! The note cards must have worked because they exchanged vows on June 21st, 1975 in the same chapel where they first

www.groesbeckchamber.com met in 1972. In 1981 they welcomed their daughter, Amity, into their lives and 8 years later in 1989, they welcomed their son, Daniel, into their family as well. Amity is married to Will and they have 2 boys of their own. Daniel is married to Chante’ and they have 2 daughters of their own. Gary still owns his 1971 Ford Ranchero, 49 years later. Pam has stuck with Gary for 45 years now. She says she married him as she thought it would be “an adventure.” It turns out it’s been more of an adventure than she could have ever imagined! LIFE AT THE OLD PECAN INN The Franks Family almost sold the farm in 1998 when Pam’s grandmother, Edna, passed away and none of the brothers wanted the farm. Pam called her dad and told him, “Do NOT sell the farm! Gary and I will buy it someday when we finish all this moving around in the military.” Her dad agreed to buy the farm from his two brothers so he could sell it to Pam someday. In 2019, after 31 years in the United States Air Force, Pam’s dream of owning and living on the Frank’s farm came to fruition as Pam and Gary bought the Franks farm along with the old farmhouse. In 2000, they built a new home on the property. They decided to restore the old farmhouse and turn it into a bed and breakfast which is now called the Old Pecan

Inn. The original pecan orchard separates the two houses. Pam quilts every Monday and Wednesday afternoon in the Point Enterprise Clubhouse, just as she dreamed of doing as a young girl. Some of the quilters are still alive who quilted with Pam’s grandmother, Edna. Gary and Pam spell Point EnterpriZE with a “Z” because they say it is a prize to live there.
