Welcome to Ascension Parish! Nestled between the capital city of Baton Rouge and the cultural hotspot of New Orleans, Ascension Parish is a bustling network of communities and people on the rise.
Let’s not forget the food, either. Jambalaya Capital of the World is not a title bestowed on Gonzales lightly. One of the things we missed most in 2020 was the Jambalaya Festival. Let’s all look forward to its triumphant return in the future as the pinnacle of celebrating the culture of our community.
After all, what really makes Ascension Parish -- or any community -- special is its people. The people of Ascension Parish are hard-working folks who care about each other.
The parish was created in 1807 and named in honor of the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in the parish seat of Donaldsonville. The largest city in the parish is Gonzales. Then there is Prairieville, Sorrento and the unincorporated communities of St. Amant and Geismar. The estimated population in 2019 was 126,604, up from 107,216 in the 2010 census. But Ascension Parish is more than a laundry list of numbers and facts. It’s industry, agricultural and history. You can relieve the area’s antebellum past at plantations like Houmas House and Gardens and Palo Alto Plantation. Or check out the River Road African American Museum and The Great

Which brings me to the unavoidable truth about life in Ascension Parish in 2020 and beyond. The global coronavirus pandemic has changed nearly every aspect of our lives -- how we work, go to school, shop and play. We do not know what the future holds with the pandemic. But we do know that we will remain Ascension Strong. It’s our strength that helped us whether the storms on 2020. Our essential workers stayed the course. Some communities’ economies were hit hard with Stay-at-Home mandates and occupancy limits. But in Ascension Parish, hotel occupancy rates and sales tax revenues remained strong through
We are the Cajun Navy, springing into action to help statewide when hurricanes ravaged our state. We are first responders and healthcare workers who stood on the front lines against the pandemic to save lives. We are teachers who learned new ways to teach, students who adopted new ways to learn, and parents who discovered new ways to lead their families. To the newcomers and guest, we say welcome. We are glad you are here. We look forward to learning how you will help shape the Ascension Parish of the future.

Welcome to Ascension Parish! Welcome to Ascension Parish – the gateway to growth and prosperity in south Louisiana. Ascension Parish continues to be the fastest growing parish in the state and its people are some of the most hospitable anywhere. Ascension Parish is rich in history. Created in 1807, Ascension Parish is named in honor of the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church. Having served as the capital of Louisiana and the site of a major civil war battle, Ascension Parish is rich in history. Since being founded, Ascension Parish was always relevant to the state of Louisiana. Today, Ascension Parish has become relevant to the world. Regardless of where you live, be it Gonzales, Louisiana; Gonzales, California or Gonzales, Mexico, you have probably purchased a product produced in Ascension Parish. Ascension is home to 37 chemical manufactures that produce the key components of everyday household items from Pampers, Purina dog food to Pert Shampoo. The chemical industry has given Ascension Parish a sizable footprint in a global economy. The Chemical Industry has also provided the residents of Ascension Parish with a quality of life that is not available in most other parishes. In 2017, the Chemical Industry in Ascension Parish employed 4,053 with an annual payroll of over $492 million. According to the 2019 Ascension Parish budget, chemical plants and industrial supplies activity account for approximately 56% of taxable sales. Ascension Parish is privileged to be prosperous. From The Sheriff As the Sheriff of Ascension Parish, I want to welcome you to our home! Did you know that sheriffs originated in England as the legal official of the crown responsible for the “shire,” or the rural countryside? The official held the office of “shire reeve,” or as it came to be known, sheriff. The story of Ascension Parish begins with the rural way of life of the French, Spanish, German, Italian, Jewish and African-American peoples who populated this land in its earliest days. They tamed the land as cattlemen and worked the land as farmers. They perfected jambalaya, a hearty rice dish of Spanish, African and French origin that is a jewel of Louisiana cuisine. They welcomed the growth of industry along the Mississippi River, which brought new opportunities in education, science and infrastructure that are the envy of our neighbors regionally, nationally and globally. Ascension Parish today is a great place to build a home, raise a family, and find a good job. As sheriff, my duties are to serve as the chief
law enforcement officer, the tax collector, the officer of the court, the keeper of the jail, and the chairman of the communications district. I am proud to say that Ascension Parish enjoys a low crime rate, well below the Louisiana and Southern average. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is one of the most professional and progressive law enforcement agencies in Louisiana. Our deputies are well trained and prepared to respond at a moment’s notice to keep Ascension safe. I encourage everyone to take a look at all the things that make Ascension Parish great. A state-of-the-art courthouse for Ascension Parish
SPECIAL TO THE WEEKLY CITIZEN The dawn of 2021 brought with it the opening of a new state-of-the-art Ascension Parish Courthouse. Located at 607 E. Worthey St. in Gonzales, next door to the Ascension Parish Governmental Complex, the new Courthouse is a beautiful building that will serve the needs of the people of Ascension Parish, and the 23rd Judicial District, for many years to come.
12 | Welcome to Ascension Parish
In 2017, a group of concerned judges and law enforcement officials determined that the security systems and space in the existing courthouse were not optimal for protecting the public and conducting the peoples’ justice. A committee was formed to discuss the need for and possibility of building a new courthouse. The committee was comprised of the Parish President, Sheriff, Clerk of Court, Chief District Judge, and Parish Court Judge.
GraceHebert Curtis was chosen as the architect and The Lemoine Company as general contractor. Together with the Courthouse Committee, they designed a building that would accommodate the current requirements and plan for the future growth of the Ascension Parish Clerk of Court, Ascension Parish Court, the 23rd Judicial District Court, and the Ascension Parish Sheriff ’s Office.
The three-story building has a total of eight courtrooms, with clear separations of public areas. Inmate travel within the building is well defined with no cross-over of inmate, Judges and public circulation. The large glassed lobby of the Courthouse has space for visitors queuing through the security scanners. BY SCOTT J. ANDERSON A new development is coming to Gonzales that will be an epicenter for commerce and culture in Ascension Parish. Heritage Crossing is a mixed-used development at the intersection of Hwy. 30 and Hwy. 44 (Burnside Ave.) in Gonzales. The 103-acre development is zoned Traditional Neighborhood Development and will feature a mix of residential, retail and commercial space. At the heart of the development will be the Price LeBlanc PACE Center. Honoring the past, looking to the future DD of Louisiana, the developer behind Heritage Crossing, describes the development as “both a highly-revered legacy and a crossroads—where the heart and history of Gonzales intersect with a vibrant future.”

The developers have worked closely with city officials to ensure robust connectivity, drainage, and permitting. Clay Stafford, president of DD of Louisiana, said city officials have been enthusiastic about the project, noting the enhanced value and resources the development brings to the area. Ascension Parish is home to 15 manufacturers with employee bases of 100 people or more. The average of the group is 337, with 1,047 at BASF alone. And the parish is aggressively supporting efforts to attract new enterprises, further expanding existing facilities and employee pools. That figure is 36 percent higher than the Louisiana state average and 20 percent higher than the U.S. average from the same period.
The parish’s location along the Mississippi River and Interstate 10 also make it a prime location for industrial projects. The area between Baton Rouge and New Orleans has seen more than $15 billion in industrial projects, with an additional $22 billion already announced.

Billy Nungesser and local dignitaries launched a rebranding effort for the Ascension Parish Tourism Commission at Houmas House’s Great River Road Museum. Houmas House owner Kevin Kelly hosted the event, which concluded with the unveiling of the new name for the pedestrian bridge spanning over Hwy. 942 to the Mississippi River levee top. Kelly and Nungesser pulled down a covering to reveal the new name, which is Sweet Spot Landing. Kelly said 1,500 names were submitted. Ascension Tourism Executive Director Tracy Browning said the new branding cohesively connects all of the “sweet spots” throughout the parish. A new video was presented, showing several aerial shots of sugarcane fields, the Mississippi River, oak trees, and various landmarks. The rebranded materials focus on attractions in Gonzales, Sorrento, and Donaldsonville. The Donaldsonville Historic District is Louisiana’s second largest historic district behind only New Orleans. As the narrator states, influences derive from African, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Acadian, and native cultures. The video showcases Sorrento’s restored shops and Gonzales’ status as the Jambalaya Capital of the World. “When you arrive there, you know you’ve reached Louisiana’s sweet spot,” the narrator said at the conclusion of the video. Ascension Tourism’s staff includes Tina Bouchereau (executive assistant and travel counselor) and Kylie Gravois (graphic designer and social media).

Board members include: Craig Walling (chair), Al Schof (vice chair), Michael Bonfanti (secretary and treasurer), Jeanne St. Germain, Karen Hatcher, Gasper Chifici, and Rae Milano. All marketing materials have been revamped, including pamphlets, advertisements, and the website, which can be found at visitlasweetspot.com. Steve Chandler, a certified tourism marketing professional and owner of Chandlerthinks, worked on the rebranding project. Based in Franklin, Tenn., Chandlerthinks has worked on projects in 26 different states. Chandler said he has worked in south Louisiana in the past, crafting the “Cajun Bayou” branding for Lafourche Parish. In working on the strategy, it was discovered some visitors from out of the area said they did not realize they were in Ascension Parish. They only knew that they were between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Nungesser said Louisiana has had four years of record-breaking tourism, and despite challenges, he remains optimistic about the future. “If one state can bounce back with tourism, Louisiana can,” Nungesser said. Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment and Kelly also spoke during the event. Kelly thanked Browning and the commission for their professional approach to parish tourism. After unveiling the new name of the bridge, many of the attendees walked over to the levee top. Hors d’oeuvres, iced tea, and the Louisiana’s Sweet Spot Signature Cocktail were served during the event. Those in attendance also received a gift bag with items featuring the new branding. The items included a glass, brochure, and face mask. According to the brochure, Ascension Parish saw $169.6 million in tourism spending in 2019, which generated $21.1 million.
