A new outlook, a new year
W
hat a difference a year makes. When we started putting “This is Shelby County” together in early 2019 we were full of ideas and promise, ready to start the year off right with spring festivals and sports season. But then this thing happened, and we watched COVID-19 turn from something weird, different and far away into something very close and very real. First it took our spring sports, then it took our weekends before finally taking almost everything from what we once thought was a normal day. Even now, almost one full year later we’ve grown accustomed to NonTraditional Instruction, Zoom meetings, and working from home. When we’re putting outfits together we have to take our mask into account. When we’re going to dinner, we’re really going to grab takeout. But despite all that, Shelby County continued to thrive. We saw our unemployment explode at the apex of the lock down, but it quickly dropped back to prepandemic levels as we started to reopen. Industries continued with plans to expand. We found ways to patronize our favorite restaurants and local stores with curbside and contactless delivery. Like always, Shelby County came out on top.

And now we have vaccines on the way. The federal government has estimated that by May all Americans will have the vaccine. So what does that mean for us? It means we can focus on the things that make Shelby County the best place to live. We hope it means the 4th of

July festivals, fall festivals, Earth Day celebrations and more will return. It means we might get to have a Celebration of Lights and packed crowds for Friday Night Lights. We’ll get the Shelbyville Horse Show and the Shelby County Fair. What a difference a year makes.

Election
VOTER REGISTRATION
Most voters took advantage of new early voting options in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, but those voting in person on Election Day were kept safe by keeping social distance and wearing masks.
Requirements
• 18 years old on or before Election Day. Voters can vote in the primary if 18 by the November General Election. • A United States citizen. • A Kentucky resident for a minimum of 28 days before the election. • Must not be a convicted felon, or if you are, must have had civil rights restored. • Must be mentally competent, never been judged mentally incompetent in a court of law. • Must not claim the right to vote anywhere outside of Kentucky.
Process
• Pick up a voter registration card at the county clerk’s office (501 Washington St., Shelbyville) and fill it out. • You must do this at least 30 days before the election to be eligible to vote. Last day is Monday, April 20, 2020. • Cannot change party after Dec. 31 the year prior to election and vote in the newly chosen party’s primary. • Can also download a voter registration form from the State Board of Elections website (www.elect.ky.gov). Must print it out and either drop it off or mail it to your local county clerk’s office. The form may also be mailed to: State Board of Elections, 140 Walnut St. Frankfort, Ky. 40601.

Recreation The opportunities in Shelby County from parks, lakes and recreational facilities to tennis are nearly unlimited and available to all ages. For the young and old there are ample opportunities to play team sports in Shelby County. Simpsonville and Shelbyville/Shelby County have their own parks systems and the county also boasts some of the best golf in the state. There are also fishing and paddleboat opportunities at Lake Shelby, and several mini-parks throughout the county to take the kids for some afternoon time in the sun.
Parks and Rec. Shelbyville/Shelby County Parks and Recreation
The Shelbyville/Shelby County system encompasses more than 800 acres spread over 13 properties. The largest property is Shelby Trails with 400 acres, in addition to 35 acres at Lake Shelby, while the smallest plot of land is Mose Dale Park covering 1.5 acres. Clear Creek Park (633-5059)
The county’s second largest park has something for everyone. Located north of Shelbyville, Clear Creek Park at 243 acres can be found by following North 7th Street. The front gates and sign are straight ahead at the curve on Burks Branch Road. The park has several athletic and recreational facilities, many with lights. Those offered include: 6 lighted tennis courts 1 lighted basketball court 3 lighted pickleball courts (coming soon) 5 soccer fields 5 baseball fields 3 lighted softball fields 3 playgrounds 5 shelters and picnic areas, four of which can be reserved Birch Amphitheater beside Lake Shelby is nestled between the Colonel Sanders picnic shelter and the softball complex. It is open from April until October and plays host to such activities as outdoor concerts and storytelling; it may be rented. The park also offers special packages for industries, companies, churches, etc., for summer picnics, celebrations and other functions. There are also large tents, tables and chairs for rent. Community Events: The park is host to community events such as the 4th of July celebration. The FAC also offers a variety of activities and special events for senior citizens, clubs, churches and schools.
Clear Creek Family Activity Center
City and county governments joined with the parks and recreation department to plan a Family Activity Center to meet the needs of the growing community. The Family Activity Center and Clear Creek Park provide an atmosphere for the youth of Shelby County to learn and play by offering day sports camps during the summer and after-school programs and holiday camps during the school year. The center is open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Fitness-oriented activities include: yoga, water aerobics, dance aerobics, step aerobics, Pilates, sports instructional clinics, tumbling classes, swim lessons and daily access to the fitness room, gym and walking track. The full-service center, next to the Waldridge Center and Dorman Preschool Center, provides: Full-size gym with basketball/volleyball court Eight-lane indoor pool; outdoor splash pool Indoor walking/running track Meeting room Fitness room Locker rooms Activities: With its variety of facilities, the parks department is able to have a variety of athletic and recreational activities year round. Outdoor education classes for schoolchildren offer lectures about

After some time off in the spring and early summer, youth sports returned at park leagues, although masks, social distancing and other restrictions were required. birds, wildflowers, trees, wildlife, snakes, insects and water environment. Classes are held in the spring and fall and must be scheduled in advance. Youth soccer leagues are for players ages 4 to 12 with spring and fall seasons, running late March to late May and August to October. Games are played on fields at Clear Creek Park. Besides in park leagues, several recreational and select teams, ages 9-16, also play and compete statewide. Youth baseball is for players ages 4 to 15 and runs May through July and includes T-ball, instructional, minor, major and Babe Ruth leagues. Each league has its own field. The youth football Shelby Storm competes in the Louisville league and is reigning champs in all three – pewee, junior and senior – leagues. Softball has summer and fall leagues. Greenway Trail
Phase 1 of the Clear Creek Greenway Trail was completed in 2015 and runs approximately one mile from 7th Street in Shelbyville near Washington Street to the Stratton Bottom Park along Clear Creek. The trail is a paved concrete trail ideal for walking, running, bicycles, rollerblades and more along the shaded creek bank of Clear Creek. No motorized vehicles are allowed. Phase 2 runs along Clear Creek west of 7th Street north about one mile. Phase 3 is almost completed and will connect the trail from Stratton Bottom all the way to Clear Creek Park/Lake Shelby, only a small portion remains. Eventually the trail will connect south to Red Orchard Park and be 5.5 miles one way.
Finchville Park
Finchville Park is located on KY 55 South across the road from the Finchville Baptist Church. This 11-acre park, dedicated May 31, 2009, has a walking trail around the perimeter, playing field, pond and playground. It also has a shelter and meeting room available for rent. The park also features a small soccer field and playground equipment for children, as well as grilling facilities.
Skate Park
The skate park is located at 1145 Washington Street in Shelbyville. The hours are 8 a.m. to dusk Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. It is open to skateboarders and rollerbladers but bikes and scooters are not allowed. This is an unsupervised park.

Red Orchard Park

Red Orchard Park (located off of Zaring Mill Road) is a haven for nature lovers. The park boasts an educational center about trees and prairie grasses, a canoe loading and unloading dock into Clear Creek, a dog park, an 18-hole disc golf course and a pond for fishing. There are also four-and-a-half miles of hiking trails around the park’s 130 acres. The park also hosted a haunted field this past Halloween. The Miller Education Center for nature opens this spring. There are many other uses for the park that are planned to be incorporated in the near future, like: covered pavilions for picnics, sand volleyball courts, archery ranges, and dressage and horse activity areas.
Shelby Trails Park
Shelby Trails Park (located at 5063 Aiken Road in Simpsonville) is a 389-acre area for horse-riding and horse-boarding. Yearly riding permits can be purchased Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the main park office on 717 Burks Branch Road in Shelbyville. Trail permits are $40 for the year. Permits will be valid Jan. 1-Dec. 31. Daily riding passes may also be purchased for $10 at Shelby Trails Park. Guided trail rides, which cost $25 per 50-minute to 1-hour ride, are also available. They must be scheduled in advance by calling 502-232-2110. Boarding is available with prices as follows: $500 for full board; $350 for pasture board; $25 per day for stalls with bedding; $25 per event per day horse lease. Indoor arena riding is also available for $10 per hour per horse. Riders should always check the website or call the park office at 633-5059 for closing information due to weather or hunting.

Youth co-ed basketball has children compete in three leagues -- 4- to 6-year-olds, 7- to 9-year-olds, 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds and begins in November and runs through the tournament in February. A second hoops season begins play in March. Youth co-ed T-ball, coach-pitch baseball and baseball fill the spring and summer months. T-ball is for 3-year-old through kindergarten, coach-pitch baseball is for grades 1-3 and baseball is for grades 4-5. Play begins in May. Youth co-ed soccer is played in the spring and fall. The county’s largest lake is in a serene rural part of the county. The 314-acre lake is located northeast of Shelbyville off Ky. 1779. The lake is primarily for fishermen. It is one of the best bass lakes for its size in the state, offering new hybrid stripers. Speedboats are required to slow to an idle when passing fishing boats, except in special water-skiing areas. The marina also offers boat and slip rental. The campground beside the lake is available year-round for primitive or pull-through RV camping. Lake Shelby (633-5069)
The 20-acre lake, operated by the parks department, is located north of Shelbyville on Burks Branch Road. It is primarily stocked with crappie and bass, and also has bluegill and catfish. Fishing is welcome off the banks of the lake and creek. Competitive rates are charged for boat and canoe rentals, trailer and tent camping, and shelter and cabin rentals. Group primitive camping is offered for Scouts and church and school groups.

The course also houses UofL’s golf teams. The course has also added The Cardinal Club, a restaurant/lounge open to the public that features indoor and outdoor dining in a casual setting. The 9-hole “executive course,” located in the middle of Clear Creek Park, features a golf shop with restrooms and a snack bar, a driving range, and a miniature golf course. According to CVS, the clinic has family nurse practitioners and physician assistants that diagnose and treat common family illnesses like: strep throat, bladder infections and infections of the ears, nose and throat; and provide common vaccinations for flu, pneumonia and pertussis among others.
