A family just off of Mt. Cross Road in Pittsylvania County will be sporting some Christmas-themed attractions this year on their farm that focuses on educating children about farm life. In addition to selling Christmas trees every fall, which went on sale in November, Owen Farm Tours sports a breakfast with Santa and Friends event which, while in previous years would have been more open, will this year be available by reservation. Additionally, this year may be host to a drive-thru live nativity scene, the dates for which would be available on the farm’s Facebook page. Outside of Christmas, however, Owen Farm Tours serves as a destination for families looking to teach their children about farm animals. Owen Farm Tours began in the fall of 2003 after a county schoolteacher asked co-owner Pattie Owen if she could bring her students to their farm. “I was a substitute teacher for Pittsylvania County. When I would go to school, I would take some of the baby chicks or baby bunnies,” Owen said. After rezoning their property, the Owens were able to open their farm up to the public with a focus on educating every age range about the realities of farm life. “There’s a lot of [people] who don’t understand what it takes to take care of farm animals,” Owen said. “A lot of people will come here for a day event and say, ‘I really don’t know how you do it.’ There’s a lot to it, a lot more than people think.” On their farm, Pattie and David Owen raise crops like corn and pumpkins each year, but also care for just about every farm animal one could think of, as well as many one wouldn’t. In addition to chickens, cows, horses, pigs and goats, the Owens keep some llamas, geese, rabbits, guinea pigs, and a peacock, several of which were adopted. “Some of our rabbits are ten, twelve years old,” Owen said. “When we adopt, we adopt for life.” Caring for the animals can be a challenge, but Owen says it’s very fulfilling work. “It’s amazing the fulfillment you feel, it’s a simple life, but it’s a hard life,” Owen said. “It doesn’t get boring because it changes every day.” A local favorite, the farm’s Frazier Fir Christmas Trees aren’t grown on their farm, as the climate of Pittsylvania County doesn’t lend itself to that type of tree’s growth. According to Owen, they source their trees from Independence, a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Each year they order around 150 trees and from there they “play it by ear.” “It takes a tree a year to grow a foot, so when

you’re talking about a seven-foot tree, it takes seven years to grow that tree,” Owen said. “What we’ve found is that the Frazier Firs work better for us as far as sales go.” The Owen’s farm was first established in the 1970s, and since opening it up to the public, Owen said, educating about farm life is what their farm is based on. “This is a working farm, but we base everything that we do on educating the people that come here,” Owen said. “[We teach] about everything from farm life to food sources. From the farm to the table, as you’d say.” Over time, the location for tours expanded to include a building for a farmer’s market, a venue location known as the Owen Farm Loft and an event stage for live events and music. The market includes exclusive farm-themed items like stuffed animals, and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The event stage, added in 2007, began as a partnership with God’s Pit Crew, and is now used for live music. Summertime brings on the Owen’s summer camp program, where children of different age groups can spend time on the farm and are tasked with caring for small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and goats. As COVID-19 restrictions loosened over this past summer, the Owens were able to hold summer camps this year, and Owen says the most fulfilling aspect of the

summer camps is finding that children will “take ownership” of the farm. “Our goal is to hear the kids take ownership of the farm,” Owen said “When the parents come to pick them up, they’ll say, ‘Mom, our animal had babies.’ They will adopt the farm, and that particular animal becomes theirs.” More information and list of events can be found at the Owen Farm Tours website at www.owenfarmtours.com.

Those who have lived in Danville for many years know to look for the familiar sight of the Madonna and Child light display around Christmas time. The fixture, which used to stand atop a roof on Dan River Mills’ Schoolfield campus, now shines brightly from Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School. The light display was originally designed by Joe Lanier at Dan River Mills and built at the mill. It was displayed each Christmas from the 1990s until 2006, the year the mill closed. It could be seen as motorists made their way across the Robertson Bridge from the north to south side of the city. “It was just a breathtaking image,” Charles Crumpler said. After the mill closed, Crumpler, a member of Sacred Heart and the Knights of Columbus that funded most of the sign’s installation at the church, spoke with Odell Hutson, the former head of the maintenance department of Dan River Mills, about possibly getting the sign for the church. In 2008, after the church was granted permissions, the light display was placed on 60-foot tall beams just outside of the building’s gym and hoisted in the air, facing Central Boulevard, where it stays all year round. “We wanted that image to be shown at Christmastime, and with what the mill has done for this community and so many people, [the sign] is something that I and others didn’t want to see go by the wayside,” Crumpler said. The fixture holds close to 2,000 bulbs in six different colors on a square piece of rebar. Crumpler compared the look of the display to that of a needle point image. Each year, maintenance is done on the fixture, and lights that have gone out are replaced. Crumpler said Powers Signs is slowly introducing LED to the fixture, as the old bulbs are harder to come by. Through donations, the church has been able to keep the fixture lit. “From this location, you’re able to see it from so many different angles,” Crumpler said. Rev. Fr. Jonathan Goertz called the sign the “most important Christmas decoration in the region,” and Sacred Heart has the special privilege and responsibility of housing it. “To have something that is so immersed in faith and the content of what we believe, and also the story of our city, ...it touches people deeply,” Goertz said. “To continue to provide that, it’s very special for us.” The display is first lit on the day before the first Sunday of Advent after mass and remains lit at night until the last Sunday of the Christmas season or the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is usually the second Sunday in January.

With no ceremony planned, Renan Fire Department continues to sell Christmas lights By JEREMY MOSER

Every year for around 10 years, the Renan Fire Department has been putting up a Christmas Tree outside of their station decorated with lights that are placed in honor or in memory of individuals in the community. Each year, as a fundraiser for the department, RFD would sell lights for $5 each, allowing the buyer to include the name of a loved one they wish to honor. Complete with a ceremony and a celebration featuring live music, the putting up of the Renan Fire Department Christmas Tree has been a staple in the area for over a decade. However, this year, according to RFD chief Scott Hutcherson, there will be no ceremony due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic, but the fundraiser will continue, even if the money isn’t the real purpose. “Even if we don’t get $100 out of it, we’re going to still do it. We’re still going to light a big tree of lights and we’re still going to have the bulletins out there.” Hutcherson says that over the years as the fundraiser grew - it went from raising around $500 in the first year, to $5,000 in 2019 - it became less about the money and more about bringing the community together.

“We don’t really see it as a money raising thing as much as we see it as a community gathering, which is more important in the big picture than the money is,” Hutcherson said. In past years, the ceremony would be completed with someone reading each of the names that were submitted, which in recent years became too many to read in a short time. “It was small beginnings, and it turned out to be huge,” Hutcherson said. “Year before last, it took over an hour to read the names. It got to be so many last year, we made a video playing in the background the whole night.” The RFD would draw the community to the ceremony with tables full of Christmas treats and live singing from Smoky Wilson, a country and gospel singer from Lynchburg. While that won’t be happening this year, Hutcherson says the tree will still be put up, and lights continue to be available for purchase. “It’s all made possible by the community,” Hutcherson said. “I see it as the community coming together. You need to have the whole community behind you.” The submitted names will be included in a bulletin that Hutcherson plans to have made available in a mailbox placed next to the tree, in lieu of having a ceremony. “This is, in my opinion, why COVID is so bad,” Hutcherson said. “It is preventing everybody from having gatherings. It’s a great thing to see the folks in the community come together like that.”

No one wants to spoil the holiday season, but Christmas trees in the home can present a fire safety issue. A primary concern with a Christmas tree is fire danger, often brought on by the combination of electrical malfunctions and, in the case of a real tree, a drying tree.
According to a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) report issued in 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to more than 200 home structure fires annually between 2009 and 2013 in which Christmas trees were the first item to catch on fire. Each year, fires occurring during the holiday season injure 2,600 individuals and cause over $930 million in damage, according to the United States Fire Administration. Sadly, Christmas treerelated fires have a higher incident of fatalities than typical house fires, according to the NFPA report. Electrical failures or malfunctions were involved in nearly half of the fires, igniting the tree with sparks or small electrical fires. Decorative lights with live voltage were involved in more than 20 percent of the instances. However, putting trees too close to open fires or heaters caused a significant number of fires as well: nearly a quarter occurred because a heat source was located too close to the tree. It isn’t just real trees that are a problem. Electrical mal-

functions can also ignite plastic artificial trees, and homeowners should take the same precautions in terms of tree placement and decorations as they would with a real tree. You should take care with trees that are left outside as well. The NFPA report revealed that an annual average of 90 outside and other non-structure fires on residential properties occurred because of Christmas trees stored on the property, the report indicates. Two-thirds of these fires occurred in January, with 64 percent of them being set intentionally. This suggests that discarded Christmas trees may be an attractive target for arsonists. But, arson concerns are not an excuse to leave your tree up after the holidays. According to the NFPA, even a wellwatered tree should be taken down within four weeks of being brought into the home. If you decorated your real tree right after Thanksgiving, it should be discarded the week after Christmas, not New Year’s Day. This is because by the end of the holiday season, Christmas trees are extremely dry, and present a heightened fire hazard.

Danville woman finds friendship through Operation Christmas Child By LANIE DAVIS
Star-Tribune Staff Writer Each year, several area churches and individuals come together to participate in Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a program by Samaritan’s Purse in which participants fill shoe boxes with toys, toiletries, school supplies and other items to send to several different countries around the world for Christmas. Ann Shackelford, a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Danville and a local hairdresser, helps to organize the program at her church and has been making boxes for several years. She always includes notes with her name and address, in case recipients want to send letters back. In 2015, Shackelford received the surprise of her life when she got a response from someone in Togo, Africa who didn’t even receive a box from her. In 2010, Elisee Attiogbey found a letter that Shackelford wrote in garbage at an orphanage in Lome, Togo, Africa. Nineteen-year-old Attiogbey lived in the orphanage before aging out, but stuck around a little longer to help out. The day he finally left the orphanage, he was rummaging through the rubbish when he came across the note in a small box. Attiogbey didn’t receive a shoebox, as he was too old, but he still uncovered a gift in finding the letter. He didn’t know a lot of English, but his mother had taught him scripture, so he recognized the words “Jesus” and “young man.” He knew the letter was for him. “He said this is for me,” Shackelford said. “He said I’m 19, I’m a young man, this letter is written for me. So itÕ s sort of like a miracle that he ever got it.” Shackelford put that particular letter in a box in 2009, meaning she received a response nearly 6 years after. Attiogbey learned English before finally sending her a response in 2015.

Shackelford tried repeatedly to send him letters and cards in response, but each one was returned to her. She didn’t have an accurate address for the young man. However, one day not too long after she received a letter, she received a Facebook message from Attiogbey himself, who had borrowed a friend’s cell phone. Over the years, Shackelford and Attiogbey kept in touch, sending each other messages through the website. Shackelford learned more about his life, including how his father had deserted his mother, forcing her to send Attiogbey to an orphanage so he would be provided for. He was made to leave the orphanage at 19. However, a science teacher by the name of Dan Cobey had taken special interest in him and made sure he was able to go to college. Today, Attiogbey is 29-years-old and now close to completing his master’s degree in communication technology. He also recently got married. In July 2019, Shackelford took a trip she’d never dreamed of: to Lome to visit Attiogbey, four years after their first correspondence. “He said I want you to come see my beautiful Africa,” she said. “...I felt called to go.” To help with the costs to get there, church members organized yard sales, hot dog luncheons, and more. She ended up having almost exactly what she needed to make the trip, which was approximately $7,000. Her granddaughter, Crystal Shackelford, joined her on the two-week journey so the 78-year-old didn’t go alone. “Once I realized that God wanted me to go and all the doors were open, I never had another fear,” she said. While in Africa, they visited Attiogbey’s mother, the orphanage he lived in, museums, the port and more. “I enjoyed every second of it, from the time I left home to the time I got back,” Sheckelford said. “I never would’ve dreamed of going across the ocean like that.” For Shackelford, the journey that began in 2015 with the letter received has been like gaining another child. The two both have an interest in scripture and devotions, which is what they speak often about. “I really think that God’s hand was in it,” she said. “I don’t think that anything like this would’ve happened, just a simple thing of him finding the note [without God]...I want to live long enough to see his life like my own children’s.” Like Shackelford, many people in the area participate in OCC each year. Jo Ann Johnson, media relations and coordinator for the OCC Piedmont VA area team, said that 11,989 boxes were packed in 2018 in the Pittsylvania and Halifax County areas. Throughout the United States, there are 5,000 drop off areas, with 400 area teams. The program began in 1990, and Samaritan’s Purse got involved in 1993. Boxes usually include hygiene items, school supplies, a “wow” item such as balls, dolls and other toys, jewelry, caps/ gloves and more. The boxes are sent to more than 100 countries around the world. “Just imagine giving hope and love to a child, a lot of them have never received a gift like this,” Johnson said. “This is a way to help children in other countries and to let them know they have

that hope and love.” The boxes also cost $9 to send, which helps to collect, process and ship the boxes, as well as provides for ministry materials to include with the box. For more information, Johnson directs everyone to the Samaritan’s Purse website at samaritanspurse.org to see lists for what to include, learn how to build a box online and more. Shackelford recommends everyone write a letter with a name and return address in a box, if they would like to have contact with the people they’re reaching like she did. “Unless you put your name and return address, there’s no way they can contact you to thank you or so that you can get to know them,” she said.

Ballou Park will be lit up December 9 - 25 and individuals, groups, schools, civic organizations, athletic clubs, and booster clubs are invited to participate. The show is made up entirely of displays created by the community. There is no fee to enter a display. Again this year, organizations, businesses, and families are invited to paint a wooden greeting card in addition to their display. These will be displayed in the Light Show. Celebrate the season with a candlelit stroll along the Riverwalk this December at the Annual Luminaria Trail Walk. ‘Decorating the Trees for a Cause’ a Christmas tradition By JEREMY MOSER

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) has every year for the last decade hosted a tree decorating competition where visitors vote with donations to local organizations. What started as a simple way to decorate the IALR’s atrium with a holiday theme soon became a staple of Danville and Pittsylvania County’s Christmas traditions that would see as many as 65 trees lining the atrium’s walls. “It has definitely become a huge tradition,” said Ellen Bass, the IALR’s manager of sales and marketing and organizer of the event each year. “We get phone calls from people starting in October wanting to know when the trees will be up.”

Organizations like businesses, schools and non-profits would put up fancily decorated trees for public viewing during the event’s open house day, which would feature several caroling groups and Santa Claus. “It was a night that people could come in, view the trees and be festive,” Bass said. “It was a really nice, festive evening that really brought the community together. People could learn about the organizations in their community when they come.” Whether the donations would go towards the participating group or a different organization of that group’s choosing, a competition would ensue to see which trees are voted the best. The public would be invited to donate to which trees they like the best, and the trees which garnered the most donations would be declared the winners. Due to sponsorships from local businesses, a large anonymous donor and the IALR’s food service provider, Sodexo, the organizations with the top three voted trees would receive an award from the IALR that varied year by year. According to Bass, the last ten years have seen over $117,000 raised for participating organizations. “One-hundred percent of that money went back to that organization, back to the community,” Bass said. “That’s
money that would not have been given had it not been for this platform here.” Although “Decorating the Trees for a Cause” has been held in the IALR’s atrium for the last ten years, the eleventh is continuing as a virtual event hosted through the IALR’s Facebook page. “We’re happy that we’re able to continue something in this pandemic. We hope that people will view it online and like the trees, and we welcome when people are able to come back in the building,” said Ellen Bass,. “We felt like this was a way to keep things going.” Participating organizations this year sent in a photo of their decorated tree which will be on display on the IALR’s Facebook page until Dec. 18. Instead of voting with money, voters are voting with likes, and the organization whose tree receives the most likes will win $2,000. According to Bass, Decorating the Trees for a Cause began as a clever way to decorate the IALR’s atrium each year. “The Inn at Virginia Tech and the Hotel Roanoke do a very similar program,” Bass said. “It started out as a means to decorate the Institute, but...we learned what they were doing and we structured it in a way that it would suit our community and what we were doing here.”

It’s been called a “Ministry of Light,” the spectacle that Pastor Mikel Pugh has put up in his and his neighneigh bor’s yard each Christmas for the past ten years. Each Christmas, his lit-up web of wiring consists of over 230 fixtures of light hung between the trees of his front yard and set up on the ground, and as his neighbor, Brandy Willette said, “It gets bigger every year.” Pugh’s first display in 2010 consistconsist ed of just eight lights. That number has multiplied each year since. “I tell people it’s displayable, bebe cause it’s never done,” Pugh said. Having spent years as an electrical engineer, Pugh is tasked with putting up Christmas light displays all over Chatham. Pugh said last year he put up the light displays in Competition Alley, Rotary Park, Giles Corner and the lights in front of his church, ChaCha tham Presbyterian. He believes that experience as an electrician made his approach to putput ting up his lights that much more unique. Pugh has linked lights of all shapes and colors together with extension cords strung between tree branches with pulleys and anchored to the trunks of the trees. The result is a sight that paints the night in a swathe of red, green and evev ery other color. He even measured out the wattages and used mostly LED lights to save power. Sitting underneath the lights, right at the edge of Pugh’s driveway, is a food donation box. Pugh is also presipresi dent of the Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center. But the thing Pugh enjoys the most about his light display is how it’s afaf fected others. He says he’s had people tell him the lights have “changed their lives.”

“I get a lot of praise, but I just enjoy doing it, and I enjoy making people happy,” Pugh said. He told of one time a woman came down his road by accident. After passing his house once, she came back and thanked Pugh for his lights. Her daughter had rere cently passed away, he said, and his lights had made her happier. “It raised her spirits. And that’s what the lights do. I love doing it because it makes people and the town of Chatham happy. They love them, they want to see them. I do it because it’s a labor of love for them.” Last year, Pugh’s lights went up before Thanksgiving and stayed up until New Year’s Day. “I have a lot of people who want these lights up and on by ThanksThanks giving so they can bring their families by to see it,” Pugh said. “They’re really impressed with it.” While Pugh’s had people ask him to keep the lights up all year, he won’t for two reasons. “You’d be surprised how much the sun can bleach things,” Pugh said. A few things were left up for just a couple months and they’ve already been turned white. Pugh’s other reason is one that Willette, his neighbor, agrees with. They believe keeping these ChristChrist mas lights to the Christmas season makes them that much more spespe cial. “It’s impossible to feel sad this time of year with these lights in your yard,” Willette said. Pugh does a similar display for Halloween each year as well.

Star-Tribune Staff Writer Each year, the Sedgefield Hunt, North Carolina’s third oldest foxhunting club, kicks off the formal hunting season at the beginning of November with a Stirrup Cup and a Blessing of the Hounds. This year, that event was held on Nov. 8, with snacks and drinks, such as ham biscuits and bloody marys, served to riders while mounted and a minister blessing horses, riders and hounds before their first hunt. Mounted foxhunting came to America thanks to settlers from England and France. Fox hounds, as well as red foxes, which were not indigenous to the Virginia area, were imported from England. The SedgefieldHunt was founded in 1927 by brothers James “Jim” and Charles Hendrix, along with Colonel Frank Page, who was the first Master of Foxhounds. Jim was the first huntsman. The trio began the hunt informally by inviting their friends to hunt with their hounds. Today, Fred Berry serves as the huntsman and has since 1988. The huntsman trains and controls the foxhounds, communicating with them through his voice and different notes blown through his hunting horn. He rides at the front of the pack with the hounds, of which there are around 50. Berry is also one of the Joint Masters, along with Martin Schleppi, Richard Weintraub and Jan Sorrells. The Joint Masters are in charge of the sport of hunting and deciding when and where to hunt. Donald Minor serves as kennelman and takes care of the hounds in the kennel. Whippers-in help the huntsman in controlling the hounds and making sure all are with the pack. The Field consists of mounted followers led by the Field Master, who is responsible to know the area, keep up with the hunt and ensure riders do not interfere with the hounds or damage landowners fields or crops. Members are split into first, second and third flights, in which the first keeps up with the huntsman over more difficult terrain, the second follows closely behind the first and the third, called Hilltoppers, walk and trot behind the rest. As stated in Sedgefield Hunt’s handbook, the hunters do not desire to kill them. Rather, they let hounds hunt and chase their prey, and they are “happy” when a fox pops into a hole during the chase. While this year’s opening hunt was held on the second Sunday in November, they are usually held on the first Saturday in November. Following the hunt, which takes around three to four hours, the group usually has a Masters’ Breakfast and annual awards. Formal hunting season continues through March, with the group meeting around two times a week during the season. Lanie Davis/Star-Tribune

The group of around 45 members has six “fixtures,” or locations, to meet to hunt, including three in Virginia and three in Rockingham County, North Carolina. “We all love horses,” Jan Sorrells, a Joint Master, said. “We all love the outdoors and riding, the excitement. It’s the question about whether we ride to hunt or hunt to ride.” The Sedgefield Hunt invites people to come out and try a hunt for a fee if they are interested in joining the group. “We would like for people to know that the fox hunt is not exclusive,” Sorrells said. “People are welcome to come out and try it, then they can join.”
