Let your light so shine By Pastor Joe Cormier
In spite of the trials of the year (and 2020 was no stranger to trials), there is always a bright spot in our Christian calendar that reminds us there is always hope on the horizon. As we look to the new year and what it may bring for us in this season, I am reminded of the wise men from the gospel of Matthew in chapter 2. As most of you may remember from the stories that we grew up listening to, these wise men came from the East to Jerusalem, saying,
or a denominational structure, but I am referring to you and to me. The people of God who carry the light of Jesus Christ within us that is meant to shine brightly to this confused and desperate world. In the gospel of Matthew chapter 5, Jesus declares, “you are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” He further states,
“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” I still have the

Waiting for hope The beautiful part of this story is that there were men, wise men in fact, who were watching and waiting for the Messiah to come into the world. These men knew there was hope on the horizon, and they did not want to miss His coming. Today, the world in which we live is desperate for hope and for truth. Many today, I believe, are waiting for a resolution to the questions they have within them. They are waiting for a savior that will come into their lives and into the world to bring peace, hope, justice, and freedom to this generation and for generations to come. If you are a believer today, you know this Savior is Jesus, and this is who we celebrate each year on December 25th. As the world watches and waits, they are watching and waiting for that star to burn brightly once again. I would ask this question— “What happened to that star and where is it today?” I believe the star the world is watching is the church. I’m not talking about a building cspotlight.com
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” In a world that remains focused on the material things during this Christmas season, let me encourage you to remember our role, as Christians, is to “let our light shine before men.” The purpose of the star in the story of the wise men was simple. It pointed the wise men to the location of Jesus. Our role is not so different today. Our role, as the church and as Christians, is to point the world in the direction of Jesus. However, there are two critical requirements to complete this task. One, we must know the way ourselves and two, we must be willing to show the way to others.
Unique opportunity This Christmas, we, as believers, have a unique opportunity to shine a little brighter. Many are looking for hope on the horizon. Many are looking for guidance coming out of the most challenging year that any of us can remember. This Christmas, shine brightly and point people into the loving arms of Jesus! Rev. Interview with Dr. Lutzer Author of “We Will Not Be Silenced…” Staff report
Dr. Erwin Lutzer, pastor emeritus of Chicago’s Moody Church, tells Covenant Spotlight he does not aspire to reclaim the culture, per se, but aspires to play a part in reclaiming the Church. His primary concern is that the Church is being shamed into silence for a number of reasons. In one example, Lutzer says fear of being called names like “racist” or “bigot” for speaking against interfaith dialogue with Muslims within the Church is a reason why the Church has continued to retreat into silence. A recent study indicates that 42% of evangelicals believe “God accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.” Lutzer warns because the Church “believes it should be loving and inclusive, [and] avoid putting up barriers to the gospel,” it is being

carried along by the culture. “Most Christians won’t be talked out of their faith,” he adds, “but they’ll be mocked out of their faith.” “Take the heat and be the Church, [while] at the same time, ministering, obviously, to a broken culture.” Christians, he argues, must learn to speak to the issues of culture and simultaneously maintain a strong Christian witness. “Christians must not be co-opted by the political right or the left,” Lutzer elaborates, “but they must be prepared to speak to the issues of the world and do so with a sense of

knowledge and confidence.” Rather than being shamed into silence, the pastor contends believers “must be willing to say this is where the Bible stands – and like Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms, be able to say, ‘here I stand, I cannot do otherwise.’” And pastors, he adds, have the responsibility of teaching their congregation and should be aware of these types of things: “Speak lovingly, but do speak the truth,” he emphasizes. Wonderful Savior

and dispelled a lot of fear that day, but it didn’t happen until Jesus got into the boat. Let Him in to your storm, whatever that may be for you. The disciples had done all the rowing they could, they were at the end of what they could do; they weren’t lazy, but like us they were limited. Let the limitless God bring peace to your storm. Maybe you’re not sure He wants to be those things for you. The prophet Isaiah took care of those concerns when He prophesied that Jesus would also be our Everlasting Father—quite a name for a newborn baby, but remember, God sees who we are created to be, despite who we are today. We can lean upon the guidance of Jesus as our wonderful counselor, trust in the power of our mighty God to bring peace in the middle of our storm and take comfort in Him as our Everlasting Father. Many people lack good memories when they hear the term “father,” and maybe the one you had was more temporary than everlasting, but know this—God will be there forever, and he will not follow the pattern of brokenness that so many fathers pass on to their children. As if all this wasn’t enough, the Prophet Isaiah wraps it all up with a bow called peace. Isaiah said that Jesus is our Prince of Peace. He doesn’t just bring peace, He is PEACE! Galatians 4:4 says the first Christmas was marked by the perfect timing of God. I believe this is your time. Seek the Savior, clear the cultural clutter, and allow Christ to give you peace.
It’s one thing to be a wonderful counselor but to combine that with the accolade of also being a Mighty God puts Jesus in a different category. There’s an open invitation for ANYONE, going through ANYTHING: God says, “I’ll be mighty for you. I’ll give you My strength, if you want it.” There seems to be so much trouble in life, but I think our Mighty God would do for us what He did for the disciples in Mark 6, when He spoke “peace be still.” Those three words brought peace and calm

s a child, I thought the holiday season was magical, with the anticipation of gifts, the family gatherings and the expectation of more celebrations a week away as we welcomed a new year. Today as a parent, a pastor and a counselor I’m aware that not everyone has magical holiday memories, and there is much more going on in our world that can overshadow the gifts, the gatherings and excitement over another year with no promise of it being any better than the last. When I think about the awesomeness of God and all of His attributes, the thing that amazes me most is, He provided for us what we needed before we knew we needed it. A scripture that ends up in Christmas sermons and greeting cards is found in the book of Isaiah, as the prophet clues us in to the fact that our Savior is exactly who we need Him to be.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. — Isaiah 9:6 I know some great counselors, but when Jesus the Wonderful Counselor offers you a session, it goes beyond what any of them can offer. Throughout the Gospels we see Jesus giving wisdom and guidance to those who desperately needed it, and nothing has changed. The wisdom of God and the will of God is found in the Word of God. David writes in Psalm 119, “Your word is a lamp to

December is a time that is not easy to get through, especially when your life has taken a turn this year. God cares so very much for you. Everyday seems difficult to press through, but God is faithful.

Recently I called a colleague of mine and told her that I was just completely overwhelmed by how God is intimately involved with everything in life. I told her that I had been struggling to call a dear friend I had not seen or heard from for some time. This beloved friend had lost her son to COVID-19 while healing from the virus herself. All day I went back and forth in my head wondering if it was the right time to call. I had talked myself into sending flower, a card, or a text letting her know I was thinking of her. Well, I picked up the phone and called. She answered and said to me, “I’m so happy you called. I really need to talk to someone at that moment.” Immediately she began to cry saying, “How am I supposed to get through the holidays, especially Christmas without my son?” Well, I began to cry and pray silently, while she cried and asked God for answers. December is a time that is not always easy to get through, especially when your life has taken a turn this year. God cares so much for you. I recognize how hard thing will be this year with the loss of so many family members and friends. We must continue to keep our faith in God. Here are a few tips to help you get through

the hard times…take a negative and turn it around. C- Communicate. Unlock your fears. You will be surprised by the number of people who share the same loss and are willing to share their thoughts with someone who cares. O- Open up. Be willing to share your thoughts and fears. Talking always helps. V- Visualize. Visualize the day when the tragedies around the world will be over. We will look back at these events and know that God is in control. I- Invest. Invest your time in healthy activities. Go for a walk while listening to a great sermon or the audio bible. D- Decide. Decide today to live out your dreams. Do not let another window of opportunity pass you by. Seize the day. Remember God has great plans for our lives even in the midst of pain. COVID-19 has an expiration date. IT WILL END ONE DAY—we just have to keep living while trusting God. Pastor Cheryll D. Wealthy Christmas everyone! HEART OF MAN
WHAT?!!! By Keith Boutte
“Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but
the sinner's wealth passes to the godly.” —Proverbs 13:22
Soooo, if you don’t make enough money to leave an inheritance to your grandchildren, you’re not good? I believe it’s obvious this scripture is about money, cash, the all mighty dollar. But like all things in a Christians life we should not draw a conclusion based on one scripture.
Most important I doubt anyone would be upset if they had enough money to put their grandchildren in their will, but is that what Jesus died for? Look at Ecclesiastes 5:10—“Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!” So, money is bad? Money is not bad or good, nor is it selfish to have, as long as our witness, faith and character remain grounded in God’s word. I believe the question is: what is most important in our lives?
“And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life-this is indeed a gift from God.” —Ecclesiastes 5:19 In our lives it’s most important to seek God in all things, regardless of our financial position. Money in today’s world is to be used to glorify God and supply our needs.
Our provisions In Philippians 4:12-13, Paul gives an example of how we should look at provisions in this life we’ve been given: “I know how to live on
almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Money is not the answer to our problems, nor is it evil or sinful 10

to have. Money DOES NOT make the world go ‘round, and soon there will be a time when one will give all they have for bread to eat. God requires our hearts desire to be towards Him before anything else in our lives. We should not brag of our riches or our poverty but humbly glorify God in all we do and all we have.
No greater wealth To be truly rich is to be grounded upon the solid rock of Jesus, to know his word and believe his testimony. Our job is to spread the Good News regardless of financial position. Some of us can give money and some serve, both rich or poor and everyone in-between should do both. God is more concerned with what we do with what he gave us, than what we have. A poor man can be proud of his ability to fix things, while a rich man envies the poor man’s skills. Together they can bless many with what God gave them. There is no greater wealth on earth than the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and we must give it to everyone who will listen. A “Merry Christmas” is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with a lost and dying world, and every Christian is required to do so. Whether it’s giving out tracts, or boldly, loudly, publicly proclaiming the Good News wherever and whenever you can. A “Merry Christmas” is knowing Jesus and telling everyone we can, with words and deeds, who He is and why He died. Man will be judged by his works, not by his bank account—what’s in your wallet? Keith resides in Lafayette with his lovely wife Christy, and they have four children and four grandchildren. of reasons,” the college president suggests. “They are very much swayed by cultural pressures and cultural beliefs much more so than Scripture.” As John 14:6 clarifies, “I am the way,
and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” Nichols wholeheartedly agrees that salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone. Jesus himself was an exclusivist, not a pluralist, “he taught that salvation is exclusively found in him and in his work.” According to the Ligonier Ministries teaching fellow, “evangelicals—who have at the core of the name, the Gospel—are denying the very heart and truth of the
gospel itself.” He is saddened to see Christian evangelicals giving in to cultural pressures and this should be “wake-up call” for evangelicals. “A better job in teaching theology in our universities and our churches must be done, so that we keep from continuing to fall prey to cultural, false beliefs.” Nichols considers cultural pressure a real issue and one that is a very strong temptation. As a result, he concludes “[Christians who know and understand the truth] need sure up the church and sure up individuals in the church to be able to contend for the Gospel and withstand the influence of culture.”

HEART OF MAN
The exclusivity of the one true God among Christian evangelicals is diminishing. Partnering with LifeWay research, Ligonier Ministries recently released the results of the biennial State of Theology survey. Responses to the statement, “God accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam,” were alarming. Dr. Stephen Nichols, the Reformation Bible College president, tells Covenant Spotlight, the results were disturbing. While 63% of Americans agreed with the statement, Nichols was most alarmed by the 42% of evangelicals who agreed with the statement. “The fact that nearly half of evangelicals agree with the statement is telling for a lot

Lessons for Littles: Traditions!

The holiday season begins earlier every year. Commercialism surrounds us, and we can be tempted to react with a grumble. Don’t grumble! It’s Christmas, the greatest event in human history! God condescended to become a helpless baby. He left Heaven for a feeding trough—to a life of humility. The Creator of Time entered the world lacking modern conveniences, no air conditioning, cell phones, modern medicine; without soft bedding, or a comfortable mode of transportation. He chose to come 2,000 years ago to a village in the Middle East, fulfilling many prophecies of the Old Testament— hoped for, longed for, and quite the surprise to Mary and Joseph. He did it for us, as part of the greatest story, the one we will sit in awe of for all eternity, the story of how He saved the world. How do we convey a bit of the true excitement of this season, yet not make it about possessions? Here are a few new traditions and some old ones with a new spin you may not have considered. • Play the carols. This season is the only time of year where rank pagans will boldly belt out the words, “Joy to the World! The Lord has come!” or “Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day to save us all from Satan's pow'r when we were gone astray.” What a clear statement of the Gospel, being proclaimed to all the world, from the mouths of donkeys. In our family, we sing them year-round. Teach them to your kids and explain what they mean. • Go caroling. We have friends who invite a group of 20-30 people over, walk through the neighborhood singing carols, and ask their neighbors to join them for a gumbo dinner afterward. Although they may get a few who don’t answer the door, this is a bold way they let their light shine. The majority of the neighbors sing along with a big smile and a thank you and several end up coming over to enjoy the good food and hospitality. • Deck the halls. Christmas is the biggest birthday party of the year! Decorate your house, inside and out. For nearly a month or more, let your house shine as a beacon to remind all that Joy is coming! It’s not about how fancy the decor is…we use family cspotlight.com
heirloom or homemade ornaments. Even salt dough ornaments and a wreath on the front door can signal to the world that a special day is coming and you’re excited! • Advent readings. This year, Advent begins Sunday, Nov 29th and ends Christmas Eve. There are plans available, prepared with readings for all ages. Every day, you read a passage pointing to or telling the Christmas story and the anticipation builds. Consider the cards from Crew and Company that go along with readings from the Jesus Storybook Bible (https://bit.ly/3eheSG7) or the conversation cards from Kids Read Truth (https://bit. ly/35VNzgK.) • Gift giving. Kids should participate in gift giving. It’s important to teach them why: we give because we imitate God the Father, who gave to us. We give to bless each other, to be reminded every good gift comes ultimately from the Father, and out of joy and gratitude. In our family, the kids draw names after Thanksgiving dinner. • Visit the classics. Maddox is a friendly child who loves to engage in H
ello there! Some of you reading this may know me, while some of you may not. Either way, I would love to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about my company, Abigail’s Auto Glass. It’s a beautiful story and an even more wonderful testimony! My name is Eliot Morgan. I serve as the Associate Pastor at Life Church of Lafayette. I am bi-vocational, as I am also a business owner. I have been in the auto glass industry as long as I have been in full-time ministry, a little longer than a decade. Several years ago, I owned another auto glass company and I felt the Lord leading me to give the business away to dedicate all of my time to the ministry. I was obedient to do so. At that time my wife and I were pastoring a church we had planted in the inner-city of Lafayette. On one fateful afternoon in the beginning of 2017, our phone rang. We were being given the opportunity to adopt a baby who, without intervention, would soon be aborted. Jenny and I were at that time unable to have our own child, as she suffered a miscarriage a while back. Without hesitation, we said, “Yes!” to the possibility of saving a life and having our own daughter! Abigail Joy was born on August 25, 2017. I went to the Lord in prayer and asked Him how I would pay for this private adoption and take care of this precious baby girl. I felt led to open a new auto glass company. I named the business after our daughter, as she was the reason for the need to go into business again! Abigail’s Auto Glass has been thriving in Acadiana ever since, thanks to faithful support of our wonderful customers! Needless to say, our adoption has been paid off and finalized because of this business. We have been so humbled by God’s faithfulness and are grateful to be in business. That’s why we say at Abigail’s Auto Glass, “It’s our JOY to serve you!” 14

conversation. Maddox loves being outdoors where he can ride his bike and fish. He also enjoys reading books and playing video games. His favorite foods are pizza and just about anything from McDonald's. Maddox does well in school but does benefit from extra support in the school and home setting. He is looking for a family that will help him reach his full academic potential. Maddox says that he wants to be adopted and would like two parents and would like other children in the home. Maddox is looking for a family that will provide him with love and patience.
