El Zagal and Kem Shriners Ill Sir Phil Landis from Kem Shrine gave a presentation on the ND Shrine Bowl. The annual North Dakota Shrine Bowl, an all-star game played every summer since 1974 to honor senior football athletes in the state. The event consists of two games of east against west in a 9-man and 11-man format. The Game rotates between Grand Forks and Fargo North Dakota. Why have the Game? The goals of the ND Shrine bowl are three things: • 1 To Raise Funds for our Healthcare System • 2 Honor the Players • 3 Raise awareness of Shriners International The players are nominated by their Coaches. The Coaches for the Shrine Bowl are picked by the ND Shrine Bowl Director. Then the Shrine Bowl Coaches chooses their players and alternates from those nominated by their High School Coach. The practice is Hosted at Mayville State College the week prior to the game and as mentioned above it rotates between Grand Forks and Fargo North Dakota. They have a silent auction and ad sales which help fund the event. The use Qtego Fundraising Services for the online silent auction. Player Sales: The Players are encouraged to solicit support locally from there area. Shriner Sales: Each Shriner is asked to Sell at least one Business Card Ad. There are roughly 2,000 Shriners so if every Shriner sold just one Business Card ad that would bring in $100,000. Naturally they all don’t sell business card ads but just look at the possibility of how much can be raised by just one Shriner getting a business to buy a $50 Business Card Ad. The last is Direct Sales: Shriner’a volunteer to call businesses throughout North Dakota for sponsorship ads.

Some of the topics discussed: 1. Legal Structure of Fraternity vs Philanthropy 2. Potentate vs Divan vs Committee Control 3. Fundraising for Fraternal vs Charitable When it comes to fundraising you must always remember that there are three different entities. Shriners International which is the Iowa Corporation, Shriners Hospitals for Children, the Colorado Corporation and the Subordinate Shrine Centers charterd by Shriners International. Legal Structure: Who are the Lawyers? General Counsel represents the Corporations. Chairman Jurisprudence & Laws represents the Imperial Potentate Your Local Shrine Attorney represents the Shrine Center. Remember that your Shrine Center Attorney should be a Shriner. Potentate vs Divan vs Committee
The Potentate is the Chief Executive Officer. He Chairs All Temple
Meetings, he is personally responsible to Shriners Intl. for the Government of the Shrine Center, he shall Require that Shrine Law and the Temple By-laws are Observed, he shall Make Appointments of Temple Officers and Committees, he shall Require that Accurate Records are Kept and Accounts Rendered, he shall Require that Regular Returns and Payments are Made to Shriners Intl., he shall Issue Orders to Nobles, Units, Clubs and Organizations within his Jurisdiction to Comply with Matters over which He has Authority and he shall have complete control over Units, Clubs and Committees The Significance of this is, He’s Responsible to Imperial Potentate for Compliance with Shrine Law.

With so many questions it was evident that we needed to have Jon come back. Next year at our Seminar in Fort Wayne, IN, Jon will be the first presenter and we will give him a couple hours to get more in-depth with the legalities of Fundraising in our Fraternity.

Some of the highlights given were how to structure the event and also what you should have during the event. Remember that planning takes time and commitment. Getting the right group together is important and they must have enthusiasm. EL RIAD SHRINE MOTOR CORPS “CASH RAFFLE” Noble Jeff Landborg, from El Riad Shrine gave a presentation on their Motorcorps Raffle. The Raffle started in 1995 by selling 200, $100 tickets and giving away a Harley Davidson Sportster valued at $7,000. the event was as a Dance with a DJ or Band. This continued until 2015 and then they increased the ticket count to 400 and this time they were giving away a Harley Davidson Heritage Classic or a Can-Am valued at $14,000. They also changed the event to a party and not a Dance. In 2018 they decided that Cash was King!! They stayed with 400 tickets at $100 and the first prize was $10,000. They event was a party with other Raffles and games to have the public spend money and win more. So for 2021 they are making big change and partnering with their partner Unit the El Riad Shrine Sprint Cars. This will allow them to grow the event and share the wealth with a Unit that we have developed a strong camaraderie with over the years! Winning Formula for the Event. • 500 Tickets sold at $100 • 1st Prize is $10,000 • Net sales/profits and expenses are to be split 2/3 to 1/3 between the Motor Corps and Sprint Cars. What a pleasure it was to have our Imperial First Lady Alice Smith and Lady Debby Bailey attend our Annual Seminar this year. Lady Alice gave a wonderful presentation to the Nobility on her Rising Stars Program. She also ran out of Ties and coins and made close to $5,000 from all the purchases for her First Lady’s Program. With income coming from the ticket sales and sales during the event they are figuring on making $53,000 with expenses around $18,000. The profits will be split with 2/3 going to the Motorcorps and 1/3 going to the Sprint Cars. All cash prizes have the taxes paid for, so the individuals who win cash prizes get the prize they win and don’t have to worry about tax implications. This is a great example of how a couple Units or Clubs can get together and make something a hit.

Over the last seven months the Covid-19 Pandemic has turned the world upside down and the 2020 Shrine Fundraising Association Annual Meeting and Seminar was no exception. WA WA Shriners had planned on sending 3 or 4 people to the seminar, however, the pandemic and travel restrictions meant that we were unable to attend. Fortunately, the SFA offered the ability to attend the
On Friday October 2, I connected to the seminar using the provided Google Meet link. Through video conferencing, I was able to watch all the presentations and take part in the discussions. The connection was simple and easy following the instructions provided by the SFA. I joined the seminar 5 minutes before the start and noted that there were around a dozen other participants taking part electronically. We were each greeted by the host, Ill Sir Jim Van De Hey, as we joined and he invited us to submit our questions and comments using the chat feature during the presentations. Ill Sir Jim monitored the chat, answered any questions that he could and posed those he could not to the speakers. This interaction reinforced the feeling that we were part of the group who were in the room. Technically the video conference was excellent. There were few difficulties seeing or hearing the presenters. All were aware that we were watching and for the most part managed to stay on camera. There was one drawback as only some of the presentations were available early so that they could be shown through Google Meet, the remainder were shown by aiming the camera at the projector screen and were not particularly visible. However, as all presentations will be made available to all members on the SFA shared drive after the seminar, this was not an insurmountable problem. Attending virtually is an excellent option for those who are unable to attend the seminar in person. You can see the speakers, hear about their projects, ask questions, and interact with the group. The 2020 seminar was very good, and I made notes of several items that I will be discussing with the Divan at our next meeting. However, what I missed was the interactions that happen by attending in person. The chats among Shriners between presentations and in the hospitality room are invaluable. That is where some of the most helpful ideas and experiences are exchanged and I highly recommend attending in person. That being said, the virtual seminar was an excellent alternative that allowed me to take part at a time when travel was not possible. I would encourage virtual attendance to any Shrine Centre that is unable to attend in person or just wants to see what the Seminar is all about. Zuhrah Shrine Center Minnetonka, Minnesota While there is no substitute for physically being at an engaging conference, streaming the latest SFA conference was entertaining, informative and a successfully social distant way to participate. Live streaming has transformed communication while ensuing a socially responsible service. After taking part in a number of Zoom meetings this year we now realize how technology has become an accepted part of our lives. Experiencing this year’s two day SFA presentation through my laptop was beneficial and appreciated. COVID-19 has undoubtedly impacted our lives in a way very few could have predicted. Even with a number of Shrine events cancelled this year, including a number of fundraisers, SFA again delivered another valuable conference and service to our Shrine Temples. While there were a number of very informative presentations, I personally recollect the impact one presenter made on me with the assertion to embrace technology. Finding software that manages donor and pledge information associated with fundraising campaigns created a new challenge. Since the conference our Divan has researched and discussed the benefits of upgrading our technology. We all want to be a part of something amazing. Managing a fundraising event is never an easy task and improvement on data entry is very appealing. The sharing of information from successful fundraising events and campaigns was a leading emphasis for most of the SFA presentations. However, we all know of failed attempts at initiating new fundraisers. Developing successful ventures sometimes benefit from those lessons learned from failed attempts. Mistakes have the power to turn you into something better than you were before. The exchange of sharing of these lessons learned needs to transpire at future SFA seminars. Many Divans use risk/reward ratios to compare the expected revenue returns of initiating new fundraisers. Another aspect to consider is projected participation. Are we going to have fun? Enjoyable experiences can have a tremendous influence on the creation of fundraisers. Next year our Temple will launch four new fundraisers that are firmly focused on FUN. I sincerely appreciate the leadership and information provided by SFA. It is with much enthusiasm that I recommend the continued use of live streaming during future SFA Seminars. Jon R. It was a pleasure to attend the 2020 Shrine Fundraising Association Seminar in Bloomington, Minnesota. I have been a member Of Ben Hur Shrine since 2010 and have heard about the Association but this was my first chance to attend. Jeff Schlieve and I dove up. We started about 300 miles from the Mexican border to 300 miles from the Canadian border. A long trip. We caught some grief from Imp. Sir Jim Smith because we arrived in shorts. It was hot in Austin, Texas when we left. Who would have thought? I have talked with Ill. Sir Jim Van De Hey several times at Imperial and other events about the association and have been to several break out classes. The seminar has a lot more information and has plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Examples of what other Shrines are using and also good information on what not to do. There were several vendors and I had some common friends with Marty Barnes (Rodeo vendor) even though we have never met before. Some of the presentations were pretty detailed. It’s always good to listen to Jon Hanson speak about the legal aspect of our great fraternity. Jon has a way of making it fun and always has a joke or two. I think the best thing is the networking and fellowship with everyone else. It was good to see Imperial Sirs Jim Smith, Bill Bailey, and Jim Cain there supporting the organization and promoting the fun and fellowship. Jeff Schlieve is our new fundraising chairman at Ben Hur and he came away with good ideas. He was very impressed by the Seminars as was I. We need to send our Nobles and especially our new nobles to these types of events. These types of events build enthusiasm and involvement. Most of all we had great fun and fellowship. Hats off to Illustrious Sir Verl Rapp and all the Zuhrah Shriners and Ladies for the great hospitality. The walleye fish was great. Being from Texas I never have had walleye before. Imperial Sir Jim Cain and I said they couldn’t beat Texas and Tennessee catfish. Well, they did. It was very good and we left full. Thanks to all the SFA officers and folks that put this together. Thanks to Ill. Sir Jim Van De Hey for staying after me to attend. Come visit me in Austin Texas Jim and we can fix that accent. I’m also glad you enjoyed your time as a Shriner Jim, we will miss you (inside seminar joke). I just wanted to take a moment and share my experience from my first attendance at the Shrine Fundraising Association (SFA) Seminar that took place in Minnesota. I am a proud Noble from NUR Shrine, Wilmington, Delaware. Our Shrine had not participated in the SFA since about 2006. As this was my first Seminar I wasn’t fully sure of what to expect and honestly assumed much of the value from attendance could be obtained either virtually or from the communicated information all members will have access to. However, my Shrine was in agreement to have representation in person. This was a magnificent decision. Through my in-person attendance I was able to fully be involved. I was able to not only meet fellow Nobles from a variety of regional areas but the in-person discussions around the seminar presentations provided valuable experience. I was able to take the content shared during a presentation and a have a true and direct conversation about how the fundraiser could be better conducted, how it may be adjusted to more closely align with Shrines of various sizes and get the real nuts and bolts of what will make it successful. I was able to share some of the tremendous programs run in NUR Shrine that have not only generated income for operation but utilized the fundraiser for membership growth as well. The seminars that were provided were a vast group of examples for new options and techniques. I really gained tremendous value from being part of the over 10 hours of prepared presentations and those that all seemed to be most valuable were the direct discussions about legal procedures and risks. Many Shrines openly admit they loosely follow the formal rules, but everyone agreed that we need to take these more seriously. The importance for understanding the different brands within our fraternity and the uses are critical to ensuring less risk and stronger success to all bodies within. I would highly recommend inactive Shrines take the opportunity to re-engage with the SFA and send several representatives to represent the following Seminar. As a focused team, I am confident with the knowledge share, personal relationship building and networking we all can build our financial strength to better provide not only for the charitable functions we support but strengthen our home base as well so that we can provide even more value in the future. I thank the SFA and NUR Shrine for the opportunity to attend and I welcome discussion with any Noble about my experience and how we can partner on fundraising ideas in the future. Message from the SFA Executive Board Wow, what a well ran event! Congratulations to Kirby and Lady Bonnie for planning and running a great seminar. The analogy that Director General Mike Rouillard used at the start of this year’s seminar was spot on. The knowledge and ideas that are presented and shared is like the pool of water and we are the sponges that absorb and share with our nobility. The Friday Fish Fry put on by Birak Shrine Club and the nobility at Zuhrah was a big hit. Thank you Potentate Verl Rapp, the Nobles, and ladies of Zuhrah for your hospitality. The officers of SFA and the attendees were honored to have three imperial officers at this year’s seminar. Imperial Sir Jim Smith and Lady Alice, Imperial Sir Bill Bailey and Lady Debby and Imperial Sir Jim Cain. Thank you for your continued support and guidance. The Nobles at Mizpah and I are extremely excited to host the SFA seminar in Fort Wayne, September 30 through October 2, 2021 to be held at Mizpah Shrine Center. Next year we will kick of the seminar with a meet and greet Thursday at the Shrine Center. When Kirby told me, they were having walleye I started to second guess if Mizpah should have a fish fry! I think Mizpah does a rather good fish fry, but walleye is tough to beat. We have had a great response from several Shrine Centers around the country that want share their successes, so we are expanding the seminar to two full days of presentations. Greetings from Fargo The 2020 Seminar is in the bag and what an informative and good time it was! I’m sure the other officers will comment on the salient aspects of the seminar, so I will go in a slightly different direction. We were very fortunate to have 3 Imperial officers at the seminar this year, Imperial Potentate Jim Smith, Imperial Chief Rabban Bill Bailey and Imperial Recorder Jim Cain. With a little under 60 attendees at the seminar, that is a ratio of roughly one Imperial Officer to 20 members of the Nobility. I think I can say with some certainty, that this kind of a ratio is a pretty rare occurrence in Shrinedom. Then when you couple that with the fact that we were together for nearly 3 days, well, that is a great opportunity for both the Imperial Officers and the Nobility to experience some one on one time. Our deep thanks to Imperial Potentate Jim Smith and his officers for taking the time to attend and it made for a wonderful, and I believe quite valuable, addition to the seminar. On a humorous note, during the round-table discussion, a catch phrase seemed to appear. A number of those who rose to speak began with, “Well, I sure enjoyed being a Shriner…”. This was in response to a teasing remark Imperial Potentate Jim Smith made a couple of times, which went “How long have you been a Shriner, not counting today?”
Both remarks always brought a good laugh and I think really illustrates the sense of both humor and fraternity that prevailed at the seminar. In closing, I would like to say a few words about our outgoing SFA President, Kirby Norman. I have known Kirby literally my whole Shrine career and I can honestly say that he has stood by me through times both good and bad. My two sons grew up around Kirby, and as adults, they consider him among the best of their friends. It was Kirby who urged me to run for the bottom of the SFA line, and I think it is fair to say that without him, I would not hold the office that I do today, nor would I have had the rare pleasure to get to know and count as friends, my fellow officers on the line. Foresight with a Foundation Wow, what a seminar in Bloomington, MN! It was great to see old faces as well as new. Despite the pandemic we were able to hold our annual SFA Seminar. I would like thank Imperial Sir Jim Smith and Lady Alice, Imperial Sir Bill Bailey and Lady Debby and Imperial Sir James Cain for attending. The Imperial Sirs did a great job performing the installation of officers. Likewise, I would like to thank Potentate Verl Rapp with his Lady Jeanna and the Nobility of Zuhrah Shrine Temple for the Friday night fish fry and their hospitality. The walleye and chili were delicious. Next, I would like to thank all of the attendees from over 20 Temples who came to Bloomington. Finally, I would like to thank the sales staff and kitchen crew of the Embassy Suites in Bloomington for working with us at each meal and setting up our event for social distancing. Congratulations to the new 2020-2021 SFA officers. I know Phil will do a great job. He and the board as well as the attendees from Bloomington have some great ideas for next year in Ft. Wayne. We had a couple of new temples in attendance as well as several others that were live via teleconferencing. For example Nur Temple, the only Temple in Delaware, was a first time attendee in over 15 years. It was great to see that other Shriners used technology to learn about other temple fundraising efforts, SFA fundraising topics and the concerns of the pandemic. Not every temple is alone or immune to the effects of being shut down this past year. Not many fundraisers have been executed this year but, there have been temples that modified their events due to government lock-downs. As this is the last newsletter for SFA in 2020 my thought is that every Temple should have a fundraising plan and a committee to run that plan. Those Shrine Temples who were in attendance had this theme in play. No matter the size of the Temple having a plan in place was the foundation to build upon. Amongst those SFA members who have had the foresight to use a calendar for their fundraising efforts had a successful fundraising event during this pandemic. However, their plan was still to have their event but adapt. I have listened to the talking heads on radio and TV news over the past seven months and we might not get back to “normal” until 2022 or beyond for public events in buildings or the outdoors.
I saw a report that many music entertainers have rescheduled their concert tours for the Summer and Fall of 2021 while some event venues (indoor) many not open until the following year (2022). Because of this pandemic it may take three or more years to have profitability at a Temple. Now may be the time to look at another fundraiser. If your Temple has not started a fundraising plan maybe it’s time to build that committee and develop a plan. This will become the foundation for your Temple’s future. Did your Temple hold a major fundraiser during the summer? Or, has it been postponed to the Summer of 2021? Did your Temple or any of the Club or Units try something new, different or modify a current fundraiser since the Summer? We would like to know. Tell us about your fundraisers during the pandemic. Greetings from New Orleans I would like to thank every one for the honor and privilege to be elected to the office of 3rd Vice president. I truly look forward to serving you for the next 4 years. My main goal will be to increase our membership to make this the “ got to be a member “ association as it once was. I also look forward to assisting temples world wide in trying new fund raising activities that we will have presented as well as sharing the lessons learned by experience from our member temples on current activities. This can not only help temples trying these out for the first time but experienced temples can share lessons learned that you may not have thought of. Thank you 2020 SFA President Kirby Norman for a Great Seminar!! Greetings from Minnesota As I look back at the last four years I can not believe how fast time has gone by. When I left Billings, Montana, SCAFRA had some issues to deal with. First we needed to address the fact that we had a non-functioning web site. Jim Van De Hey took that challenge on and within one month we had a web site. The other main issue to deal with, to have the Shrine Fundraising Association attend the OG/AR seminar in Tampa. We have attended the last three years with tremendous success. At this years seminar in Bloomington, we approached the Imperial Officers in attendance and asked them if we could take the lead and run the Fundraising portion of the OG/AR seminar. This will help us show all Shrine Centers we are the information leaders of fundraising. This years seminar was interesting to say the least, with all this covid 19. Your officers decided early on, many different possibilities for our seminar. We were going to have one, one way or another. The hotel had their covid plan and we were going to follow it to the letter. Each Noble and Lady in attendances safety was our utmost importance. I can not thank all of you enough for all the thoughts, words, and deeds for this most trying year of 2020. The constant calls asking what can we do for you and your support was greatly appreciated. To the Imperial Sir’s and their ladies, Bonnie and I are so thankful for your years of friendship and look forward to our next meeting. Mike and Sharon Rouillard, as Director General I could not have asked for better help. Your visits on duties was always followed through and then you always asked what else can we do. Thank You my friends. To Mark Olsen and Jon Hanson my long time friends, I thank you for your time in assisting with the seminar. Your humor is always appreciated. Fundraising in our Fraternity Benefits of SFA Membership Louisiana Shriners Cash Calendar 2021 is a joint venture with Jerusalem, Habibi and El Karubah which only came about as a result of my attendance at the 2020 SFA Seminar in Green Bay. This is the benefit of being a member of SFA. I encourage you to have your temple take up the offer to join now for $150 which includes 2021 and gives your entire nobility access to all the presentations since 2017 online. One temple sold quarter page ads for $300 each raising $4800 in ad sales to cover their share of $1200 of production costs for the Cash Calendar. By Jerusalem Shrine joining SFA this fundraiser will net our temple and each temple $20,000 just off calendar sales excluding ad revenue.

he Rickshaws have just finished up with a busy summer. We managed to get our trikes out to parade in Viborg, SD in June. We have brought in one new member in August with three more in the pipeline. A special welcome to Eric State for joining our unit and attending our Friday lunch as well. In August, we had a sizable wedding that we handled and then the Rickshaws did something very unique. Paul DeYoung, Terry Kelly and Alan Machmiller sponsored a meal at each of the Wednesday night bar. Each meal was a freewill offering with ALL monies donated to Shrine Temple to help with the operating costs. We were able to present the illustrious sir with a $1,629 donation to our beloved Shrine temple.
In October, we did a fun meeting and outing with our ladies at the Great Life golf range (what a hoot). We also selected new officers for 2021. They are as follows: Emperor-Mason Goldsmith, Dragon KeeperJames Goering, Chief Coolie and Treasurer-Randy Eide and Assistant Coolie-Adam Schoenherr Secretary. We are looking forward to the Fall Ceremonial when Eric’s brother Nick is made a Shriner and is welcomed into our Rickshaw family. On behalf of our unit we would like to give a BIG THANK YOU to our ILL SIR : Al Zahn for his leadership in this most interesting of times in America’s history.

EL Zagal Misfits
I caught up with them on Saturday October 24th and got a few pictures for the article as they were working on their latest project. They were set up in the El Zagal parking lot with the cookers stuffed with 100 racks of spareribs and 6 pork butts.
Cooking Up A Cure For The Covid Blues A group of Nobles at El Zagal recently formed a new club called the Misfits. I’m sure that there is a reason for the name, but as of yet, the club is keeping mum about it. But what these guys decided to do is form a club based around doing barbeque. And for our southern brothers who are purists regarding the term “barbeque”, they are not “grilling” but are doing the traditional low and slow method of cooking meat with wood heat and smoke. Currently, they have two cookers on trailers. One is a more professional style one with rotating racks, optional propane heat and temp controls, as well as a being wood fired. The other is the delightful and charming Miss Piggy, who began life as a propane tank. Having turned her back on her sinful former propane ways, Miss Piggy now is a strict convert to wood smoke alone. Earlier this year, when the first effects of Covid Cabin Fever was setting in, the Misfits decided that they would get together and do something to help out the community and maybe get a little money coming into our largely shut down Temple. So, they went on Facebook and announced that they would be taking orders in advance for barbeque and to schedule a pickup time so that social distancing requirements could be met. They also offered delivery service for those who could not get out. This quickly became a hit and for a few weeks during the height of the lock-down, people could get a weekly ration of barbeque. The menu changed from week to week, offering ribs, pork butts and other delights and served with various side dishes as well. As the restrictions lifted, the Misfits slowed the amount of times they did this, but every so often they would announce their pre-order opportunity and the orders would flock in. In between times, they also did some individual events as club fundraisers.
On that day they were on a dual mission, undeterred by the recent unseasonal and early snowfall. Approximately 30 racks of ribs were slated for local pickup, while the pork butts and the remaining 70 or so racks of ribs were going to be taken over to West Fargo and there they were setting up and giving away free meals to all the city’s first responders, and their families, as a thank you for their service. They were going to utilize the same method of drive up to dispense the meals as they have been using. While most of the other clubs and units at El Zagal have had trouble getting some traction for their fundraisers, what with all the parades and other summer events being cancelled due to Covid, the Misfits have managed to not only stay active, but to increase their profile and that of El Zagal as well. Hmmm. Maybe that has something to do with why they chose the name that they did. Fraternally Scotty Uhrich 1st Vice President El Zagal Shrine
Elf Khurafeh Sells Popcorn for Profit The events of 2020 are unlike anything we’ve seen in years. Our nation has been faced with a pandemic of epic proportions. As a result of the virus, many businesses have had to either restrict their services, or completely shut down. Elf Khurafeh has also shared in these struggles. We have lost income from hall rentals, at our facility in Clio Michigan. We have lost income from our Sportsman’s Raffle having to be rescheduled many times.. Needless to say, like many other temples this put Elf Khurafeh in financial distress. So I began looking for smaller fundraisers that had a zero out of pocket cost for the temple. Flavored pre-popped popcorn sale. It’s easy to do, with the company I’ve found. It’s 100% online and shipped right to the buyer. The temple gets 50% of the sale without shipping, and if someone would like to donate and not buy popcorn there’s even a donate button, The temples get 75% of that. I’d be happy to answer any questions on this fundraiser and set you up with them to see if they can help you. Our first sale ran 8/26/20 thru 9/1/20 we had $736 in sales and received a check for $368, not much but pretty good for our 1st time, and with no out of pocket cost. Jackson Hole Rodeo is pleased to announce our partnership with the Jackson Hole Shrine Club for the 3rd annual Jackson Hole Shriners Rodeo with the proceeds going directly towards the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. The Jackson Shriners have been a prominent fundraiser in the valley for decades. In the past they have raised funds through cutter racing and skijoring events held through the winter, this year both events had to be cancelled. We at the Jackson Hole Rodeo have partnered up with them to hopefully fill some of the void left behind with the loss of this years events. We are proud to say that we raised $33,400 from this event that will go directly to the Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City. The Shriners Hospitals have been a huge help to thousands of children providing health care and treatment all care and services are provided regardless of ability to pay. Donations through groups like the Jackson Hole Shriners Club, as well as local groups like the Jackson Hole Snow Devils, and Stockton and Shirk Interior Designs help to keep these hospitals operating and allow them to provide their services. Shriners Rodeo at the Jackson Hole Rodeo was September 12th 2020. This has been a fun year, we are so happy for the Cowboys and the Jackson Hole Rodeo fans that came out to Enjoy the Rodeo this year. Naja Shrine is starting a new fundraiser targeted to help establish a Shrine Patient Kids Camp in the Black Hills area of SD. The event will be called the Black Hills Meat Fest. Naja Shriners has been a part of the west river community since 1893, and since 1922 Naja Shriners has supported the Shriners Healthcare for Children system. Currently, Naja Shriners offers healthcare assistance to over 600 children in western South Dakota. Most of these patients are seen at the Twin Cities Health Care facility in Minneapolis, MN. We are in the process of getting our logo trademarked and we have 50 Nobles and their Ladies signed up to run this event. During the event, we will be raffling meat; 2 processed hogs, 1 processed beef, 40 turkeys, and 50 hams. We also will be raffling approximately 30 pounds of cheese. We will also be serving food and beverages (soda and beer) during the event. In addition to the meat raffle, we will have coolers filled with grilling/BBQ items, pull-tab tickets, and a final drawing at the end of the night for a 100-quart cooler full of meat. These will be all given away by the turn of a wheel. All in all, we will be raffling well over one ton of meat for this event. Proceeds from this event will be used to send some of our Shrine Kids to camp. The goal is to have a Shrine Kids Camp in the Black Hills of South Dakota for Naja Shrine patients. Some camps that are affiliated with Twin Cities Healthcare are: Camp Bravo - an acting camp for patients who have any diagnosis between the ages of 5 and 13. Campers spend a week practicing and learning lines and choreography leading up to a final performance; Camp Real World – a transition camp for patients who have any diagnosis and are 16–20 years old. Camp Real World is an overnight camp focusing on transitioning care from Shriners Healthcare for Children to adult care in the near future; Camp Splash - a swimming camp for patients who have any diagnosis and are 1–18 years old. Campers participate in a week-long day camp in our therapy pool with instructors; and
No Boundaries Sports Camp - a day camp for patients 5–12 years old who would be eligible to use an adaptive wheelchair for sports. The camp is hosted in conjunction with Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Center in Minneapolis, MN, and participants try a variety of adaptive sports.
There are also ski and summer camps in Utah and Colorado. Funding to send a patient and a parent to these camps comes from donated funds or fundraising efforts. Many of our patients have not been able to enjoy these amazing programs due to the distance involved and lack of funds. Games of chance and Raffles to win over A TON of Meat! Beef, Pork, Turkeys, and Hams! We will also have Dimock Cheese. Raffles to win coolers of meat and more! You won’t want to miss this event. Doors open at 3 pm and games begin at 4 pm. Stop in anytime and play for as long as you like. Entrance fee covers your food and drinks. All the donations received so far, pays for the meat, food and beverages. Additionally, we have received donations for radio and TV advertising to promote the event. With only Facebook advertising alone, we have generated over 1,100 inquiries/interest in the event. Our goal is to have approximately 300-400 people attend. Should this event be successful, we plan to hold it annually at the same venue. In addition, we plan to hold smaller Meat Fests throughout our Temple area to raise money for this cause and to promote our fraternity to the general public. The Meat Fest is being co- Sponsored by Black Hills Harley Davidson, Midco Communications, and The Local Rural Electric Associations (Touchstone Energy Cooperatives). Shrine Fundraising Association Thank you again for allowing the candidates for Imperial Outer Guard to attend and speak at the Association meeting. I believe the association has a vital roll to play in the success of Shriners International. I have been a supporter for the association for several years. The structure the association has in place to get the word out on a variety of ideas to raise money no matter the size of the Temple or the activity is more critical now than at any other time with the events that have unfolded this past year. Like SFA, we need to share ideas that are working elsewhere that are reinvigorating Blue Lodges so we can grow our Shrine family and enjoy the fundraising increases that would follow. Many hands make light work. This past year I called my Divan and asked for them to take on a special fundraising event in the middle of March while they sat at home. We started calling the Nobility that were late in paying their dues. We also called our NPDs and demits going back each year for the last 5 years. Our efforts resulted in a 49.6% increase in dues revenue over last year. The Nobles that were dropped NPD or Demitted, we offered to wave all of the back owed funds up to the date they were reinstated so they only had to pay a prorated amount for the current year. We found many fell behind and then felt it would be to costly to get back in. Our NDPs and demits are at the lowest level in years. I have served and still serve on Scottish Rite Foundation Board, Wyoming Masonic Membership Committee, General Grand Council Finance Committee, including the triannual session, Grand Lodge of Wyoming Endowment Board of Directors all for several years. Put together Winter session for Pacific Northwest Shrine Association to be held this February. I have been active with Imperial Shrine as a Captain of the Guard and Marshal’s aid when Imperial Session can be held in person. I Own and operate 2 real estate companies, speak, and teach investment real estate and property management. I have traveled nationally and internationally speaking and teaching real estate. My classes are approved in several states for continuing education credits. My companies are licensed and operating in Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. With some well-placed investments and a wonderful management team I plan to semi-retire this next year allowing me to enjoy the next chapter in my life. Having run last year, I called almost all the elected representatives, listened and shared ideas as the pandemic disrupted our lives. I am committed to serving our Masonic/Shrine family. We need leaders who will look for ways to succeed, especially in difficult times. Adversity to a leader is a challenge. I met this challenge along with others throughout the pandemic year, assembled a great team, made plans, which has allowed us to succeed. I did not accomplish what we did on my own. I cannot be an Imperial officer on my own, yet with my Lady Peggy, our 4 kids, 5 grandkids and your support I can. I will do this for our Nobles, hospitals, and our Shrine kids. Greetings from Minnesota, First and foremost, with Veterans Day fast approaching, I would like to thank all Veterans for their service; we are forever grateful. It was an honor to attend the Shrine Fundraising Association at the beginning of October; the SFA officers and all the presenters did a fantastic job. Each fundraising presentation offered insight and takeaway’s, specifically, the inclusion of technology and social media use to streamline elements of the fundraising event process. Networking was also a takeaway theme at the conference. I echo the need for more temples to get involved with SFA; if you don’t see a neighbouring temple as an SFA member, reach out and provide encouragement to join. Being a part of SFA will strengthen your temples’ fundraising network reach, education, planning, and fundraising approach. I want to thank the SFA officers for the opportunity to speak at the conference as a candidate for the Office of Imperial Outer Guard. My lady Jill, our daughter Natalie, and I; as a family, we are excited about this journey and are committed to the requirements and expectations to serving you, Shriners International. I am thankful to be a part of an energized shrine family dedicated to our fraternity’s core values and mission and the world’s greatest philanthropy. As an experienced servant leader in a healthcare system, I have the knowledge and experience in healthcare governance, strategic planning, and, importantly, experienced in building partnerships at the state and national levels. As a Veteran and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, I have a passion for seeing our Legion of Honor units grow. As a motorcycle, classic car, and motorsports enthusiast, I have a desire to see our motor corps units and clubs grow. I will never forget the impression left on me the first time I saw the Bedouin Shrine Iron Horse Patrol roll in and unload and perform drills. Or the priceless expression of a little girl as she was greeted by the horse I was riding in my first Zuhrah Shrine Horseman parade. My point is that from clowns, antique cars to brewmasters, and everything in-between, we have opportunities with real value to offer. As we look at ourselves and the future, we need to remember Progress is not a disregard of tradition; it’s remaining relevant in evolving environments. Introducing the New
Dear Temple Divan Members and Recorders, As we are all too well aware, 2020 has been a year of great challenge and difficulty. That’s why I am extremely excited to let you know about a new opportunity to help nobles get back into the swing of fun and fellowship. The Fun and Fellowship Competition Fun and fellowship events offered by temples, clubs, and units serve as the cornerstone to a temple’s member engagement strategy. These events, along with supporting our philanthropy, are a main reason our brothers join Shriners International. On Tuesday, Oct. 27, we will launch the inaugural Fun and Fellowship Competition. With this competition, we look forward to injecting optimism into our outlook. COVID-19 has made so much of what we do difficult or even impossible, but with creativity and brotherhood, we can still find ways to have fun and enjoy fellowship. The competition seeks to increase awareness of and reward the efforts of nobles who adapted existing and developed new events/clubs/units to succeed in having fun and fellowship during COVID and seeks to inspire nobles to submit entirely new ideas on how to have fun. Engaging Your Temple’s Members In a spirit of brotherhood, the competition is designed to encourage all nobles to participate in several ways, including submitting their entry into the competition. Additionally with the help of the Fun and Fellowship Council, whom will narrow all the entries to the top 15, the entire Masonic community can participate by viewing the online videos and casting a vote to determine the winners. What’s Next Soon we’ll reach out to club and unit leadership contacts and then to all nobles, introducing the competition and explaining how it works, how to enter, and how to win! Again, every noble can enter the Fun and Fellowship Competition. We’ll start taking competition entries on Oct. 27. Please join us in simultaneously celebrating the wonderful things happening out in Shrinedom both now and in the future while we inspire our nobles with ideas for things they could try at their temple, too. The Annual Meeting and Seminar was held in Bloomington, Minnesota under the leadership of our President Kirby Norman and his Director General Mike Rouillard, Zuhrah Temple. I want to thank them both for a job well done. Also, I want to thank Zuhrah Shrine Center and the Barak Shrine Club for the wonderful Friday Walleye Fish Fry at the Temple. We had the honor this year of having our Imperial Potentate Imperial Sir Jim Smith and Lady Alice attend this years Seminar. We also had the privilege of having Imperial Chief Rabban, Imperial Sir Bill Bailey and Lady Debby and Imperial Recorder and Past Imperial Potentate, Jim Cain attend as well. I want to sincerely thank these Officers for their continued support of our Association.
I am very proud of our Association and the Officers who have been elected for the 2021 year. When I look back at 2015 when I joined the progressive line of SFA (SCAFRA at that time), I wanted to make sure that we are moving forward as an Association as well as providing the best that Shrinedom has to offer. We have more than doubled our membership since 2015 and currently have 59 Shrine Centers that are members and we continue to grow. My hope is that we are once again back to having over 3/4 of the Shrine Centers of Shriners International as Members of SFA. At one time we would have well over 230 Nobles attend the Annual Seminar in person. We had over 70 Nobles and 34 Shrine Centers attend in person and online this year. 12 Shrine Centers attended the Seminar online which is remarkable. Your SFA Board of Directors have put out a challenge to our current Shrine Center members. If they can bring in 3 New Shrine Centers for $150 each for 2021 and those Shrine Centers continue membership for 2022 we will credit that Shrine Center one year of membership dues as a thank you. On the page to your right you will see the names of the past members of our Association along with the current members. Those Shrine Centers who are listed and wish to reinstate can rejoin for just $150 for the first year. Shrine Center dues have been $250 per year for regular members for almost 20 years. Remember that your dues give you access to all our online content, including the video presentations of SFA Seminars since 2017. Any Club, Unit or Noble can have access to this information as well as attending the yearly Seminar in Person or Online. Any number of Nobles can attend the yearly Seminar. This year we had one Shrine Center send 13 Nobles to attend the session in person. Membership payment is due by January 31st of each year Dues for Shrine Centers remain at $250 per year which includes all Clubs, Units and Nobles of the Shrine Center. Any number of Nobles can attend the annual seminar as well as having access to online information of past seminars including current video taped sessions. Any Noble from your Shrine Center can attend our yearly seminar online through Google Meet Dues for the Associate Members remain at $280.00. Associate members must be approved before membership is granted. Associate Membership is designed for suppliers and companies who help Shrines Centers with raising funds.
