'Tis the season for
Sweaters and Dresses!
By the Audacious Boutique Girls
For many people, the holiday sea-
son means a full social calendar. If this is you, you have probably struggled with what to wear to a variety of events. No one wants to be under- or overdressed for the occasion. Here are some tips to help you rock this winter in style.
Christmas
4
You may think that you can't wear the same outfit for a holiday party and to your family’s Thanksgiving. You are mistaken! When sitting
for long periods, comfort is key. An oversized sweater, nice jeans, a scarf and some stylish flats make the perfect family dinner outfit. After dinner, you’ll likely be ready for a night away from the kids (and the in-laws). Trade those flats for some ankle booties and that scarf for statement earrings, and you are ready to party! Another must for the holiday season is having family photos taken. Whether those pictures adorn a customized Christmas card or a grandmother’s mantel, it is important to coordinate outfit colors. When putting together family photo outfits, you want to match without being too matchy-matchy. A good way to do this is to have a
variety of colors that look good together rather than having everyone wear the same color or pattern. You can find some of the best color combinations by taking a peek at the autumn leaves. Browns or beiges, reds, yellows, and soft oranges, are great for adding some variety to your photos, while still coordinating with your family members. When committing to your photo apparel, you also must take your background into account. For example, if you are being photographed in a fall setting, like a pumpkin patch or the woods, you would not want your primary colors to be the same as the leaves in the background. Add some dark greens or soft blues and teals to make your photos pop. These fall color combinations will leave your family photos looking unbe-leaf-able! When choosing outfits, no matter the occasion, the most important thing is that you feel good about what you are wearing. That’s where we come in. We’re here to help you find the clothes you love. We’re here to help you feel beautiful!

Listen The message of the season
By Jared Ellis Fellowship Regional Church
Imagine for a moment
that you are standing in line to ride a Ferris wheel. You notice a young couple talking and brushing their shoulders into one another and smiling. This is their first outing together. As the next available car opens, they enter. The enormous wheel ratchets and cranks, turning until their car reaches the peak. The young man turns to the girl and gently brushes back a lock of her hair and leans in. As he speaks, she strains to hear him over the carnival music and the crowd. Suddenly, her face lights up with a smile that tells the world her fears are forever banished. She responds in kind and his chest swells with pride. Seconds later, their pinky fingers begin to stretch and blindly fumble around until they finally find one another. As an onlooker, you can’t help but sense their joy and celebrate, though you heard not a word. Most of life’s most powerful moments are more subtle than they are sensational and it’s our challenge to always be on the lookout for the beauty and mystery of life. Such as with the story of a baby born in Beth-
lehem. You must lean in close and listen to catch the import of the message. With a few adjustments, an old lean-to is a makeshift delivery room and the splintered manger a bassinet. Although the newborn baby is a king, there was neither pomp nor circumstance. Many have asked why it was important that Christ came in the form of a baby. Well, lean in… Nothing is more approachable than a baby. Nothing draws you in like an infant. Nothing causes you to quiet your soul like seeing a new mother rocking her little one. Perhaps that’s why the King came as a baby. It’s as if the arrival of the Christ child was God gently brushing back a lock of hair from in front of our ear and leaning in close to whisper the good news. And then our faces lit up with smiles so beautiful and pure because for the first time all of our fears were banished. During a busy season of an already hectic year, ponder the subtleties of Christmas. Turn off your phone and TV, quiet your soul and lean in and listen for the beauty of subtlety.

HEART HEALTH THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS
Or
Yes, chocolate can be heart-healthy! Saint Luke's Health System
we know it’s hard to imagine the
holidays without all the tastes and smells that come with the traditional fare. But there are ways you can stay healthy and mindful as you celebrate the season with friends and family, without feeling cheated. You can start by creating some new holiday traditions by introducing recipes loaded with healthful ingredients that your family will love! Our recipe for cranberry and pistachio chocolate bark has been featured as part of Saint Luke’s Food As Medicine Everyday (FAME) program. The FAME education program, offered through Saint Luke’s Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center, is centered on food and its powerful medicinal qualities. While most holiday sweets are filled with sugar and butter, this recipe for chocolatey goodness is quick and easy to prepare and satisfies with ingredients that support cardiovascular health. It’s perfect for sharing at holiday gatherings, for neighborhood gift giving, or even for keeping all to yourself. Under the direction of Nutritional Health Coordinator Lucas Schubert, FAME has offered hands-on classes that not only teach cooking techniques but also provide tools and tips for making positive lifestyle changes that stick. After being put on hold due to COVID-19, the program is gearing up for a series of virtual classes slated to begin in early 2021. 18
Dr. Sarah Bradshaw, a family practice provider at Allen County Regional Hospital’s Iola Clinic, has been instructing her patients for years on the relationship between food and health and looks forward to the virtual format. “Having the option to participate online allows those of us who live outside the metro area the opportunity to be a part of it and to share that information in our own communities,” said Bradshaw. She knows individuals have unique food needs and that there is not one diet that’s right for everyone. Dr. Bradshaw suggests, “Talk with your doctor about what type of diet is best for your health. Then work to set some goals together.” When used with a comprehensive health care plan, healthy dietary changes can have a positive and dramatic effect on the prevention and management of many chronic health conditions including heart disease, dementia, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis. To learn more about Saint Luke’s Food As Medicine Everyday (FAME) program and find other great hearthealthy recipes, visit saintlukeskc.org/food-medicine-everyday-fame-program.

HOMETOWN
Comfort By Ryan Sparks, Experience the Lofts
For many of us, the holidays mean
time with family. The special memories so many of us cherish often occur when all the siblings, cousins and aunts and uncles are gathered around the table. If that’s the case with your family — and if you’ve got friends or relatives coming to Iola this holiday season — Experience the Lofts is a wonderful option for your guests. The location is ideal, the square is your playground, the amenities are first-class and it’s a way to make their visit to our community that much more special. Experience the Lofts has a proud history. When the Iola square was originally developed in the late 1800s, large masonry construction was used to accommodate a booming economy. The buildings around our square were designed to be beautiful, to draw citizens and travelers from afar. They were built to last for centuries. And they have. But as is the case with most small communities, over the last century or so, our population has declined. Furthermore, years ago the upstairs of many of these buildings were abanChristmas
20
doned in a large part due to issues with ADA-compliance. With this abandonment, it meant the downstairs retailer would be responsible for the overhead of these monstrous buildings all on their own. The expenses of maintenance, insurance, taxes, and utilities created a financial strain on the downstairs businesses and ultimately made it difficult for businesses to survive on the square. The square became a difficult sell. That’s where Experience the Lofts comes in. Iola’s founders had a commitment to the town square as the cornerstone of our community, and we seek to further their vision. As such, they began rehabilitating the upstairs of these buildings in hopes of spreading out this financial burden among multiple units. This would in turn lower the overhead on the downstairs businesses, while also helping fulfill another need: nice, short-term lodging. Within a few short years, twelve high-end lofts have been built, gaining raving reviews from travelers. Also, the commercial spaces below the lofts are now 100% occupied
by thriving businesses, in large part thanks to the reduced rent allowed by the upstairs once again generating revenue. We at Experience the Lofts believe that with time and dedication, Iola's entire square can once again be the place where residents and tourists alike head to enjoy a good meal, some wonderful shopping and the best lodging in the area. Check us out online at experiencethelofts. com. Lofts are now available for any length of stay!

Sweet HOLIDAY'S FLAVORS By Shelly Stone Silverado's Restaurant & Tavern
Late fall is the perfect time of year for pecans, so I’ve chosen two favorite recipes of mine that include them.
Both are great to enjoy now that the cold weather is here and are sure to please any guests you have invading your home. The recipes are really simple to make and use ingredients most of us have already on hand. And for the cobbler, make sure you get some whipped cream at the store, or make it yourself with heavy whipping cream, a bit of sugar and vanilla extract. Grab a whisk, or if you’re like me, an electric mixer (who needs to work that hard, anyways?) and voila!
PECAN PIE COBBLER
• • • • • • • • •
• 2¼ cups all purpose flour • 4 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 ½ cup sugar • 4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 cup pumpkin puree ½ cup milk ½ cup butter (melted) 3 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup sugar 1 cup brown sugar ½ cup pecans 3 cups hot water 9” x 13” pan
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a medium sized bown, stir together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and spices. Set as 24
Christm
aside. In a smaller bowl, stir pumpkin puree, milk, melted butter and vanilla together to combine. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix to create a thick batter. Pour the batter into your pan. In a separate bowl, stir sugar, brown sugar and pecans together. Spread over the top of the batter evenly. Pour hot water over the entire thing — without stirring a thing! — and bake for 40 minutes or once the middle is set . Cool for several minutes before serving. Don’t forget the whipped cream! This bread recipe is super easy, and it’s a great way to get rid of extra bread. At the restaurant, we don’t serve the bread heels, so at any given moment, I’ve got half a loaf of heels lying around and nothing to do with them — except make bread pudding. I’ve probably made bread pudding
a thousand different ways, but this is a favorite of mine to make when the holidays come around. I usually double or triple it when family or friends are in town.
PECAN PIE BREAD PUDDING 1 loaf of bread 5 eggs 3½ cups whole milk 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract ½ cup butter 1½ cups brown sugar 1½ cups pecan halves 9 x 13 pan Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cube bread and put into a 9 x 13 baking dish. In a medium bowl, mix the eggs until they are combined. Add the milk, sugar, and vanilla and stir until combined. Pour the milk and egg mixture over the bread cubes. Melt butter in a small microwave-proof bowl. Stir in the brown sugar until dissolved. Stir in the pecans. Pour this mixture over the bread and egg mixture, and gently fold. Don’t mix it in thoroughly, just fold so the pecan mixture forms into clumps. Bake for 45 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when a toothpick or knife comes out clean from the middle. I like my bread pudding a little more done than most people, so if you’re one of those who likes runny bread pudding (again, not me!), 40 minutes may be enough.
Happy Holidays & Enjoy!

Determine a color palette. Don’t let traditional colors hem you in. Maybe you are a gum-drop fan. Or gingerbread. Whatever your fancy, get your thoughts in mind and lock them down. Poinsettias or red and white roses make for a dramatic centerpiece. Add ornaments with a thick ribbon tied around the base and it’s good to go.

This is the time of year to use a tablecloth. Make sure it fits the shape of your table. A white tablecloth is always a reliable go-to, but this will depend on your theme. A red tablecloth is a perfect fit for the Christmas season, and will also help to hide any spills or other oopsies that will inevitably make their way to your holiday meal. Contrasting the color of placemats to that of the tablecloth adds a pop of color and dimension. If you’re going for a more elegant look, cloth napkins do the trick. Don’t forget a fun napkin ring to help tie in your theme. If you are using sprigs of evergreen in your centerpiece, consider attaching a small sprig to the napkin holders. Or, if going for the ornament centerpiece, look for small ornaments that can be affixed in some way to your napkin holders. Your dinnerware doesn’t have to match. If you don’t have enough pieces of any one setting, consider switching it up with an “every other” place setting approach. Don’t forget your table-setting training. Forks to the left, knives and spoons to the right. Dessert fork and coffee spoon go above the setting. For fun, place napkins at a 45-degree angle on the top of the plate.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
I’ll Be Home For Christmas By Paul Miller Iola First Assembly of God
I went to college just
three hours from home. Exit 182 off I-80. The nice thing about being from Omaha, and living in Iowa, is that each mile marker provided a countdown to home. Des Moines and Merle Hay Mall at Exit 131, De Soto at 110, Adair at 76, and Council Bluffs at 8. The towns served as landmarks; the mile markers functioned as rhythmic reminders of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. The road began to rise at mile marker one, approaching the lengthy bridge. The zero point is the state line, in the middle of the Missouri River. The sign says “Welcome to Nebraska” but I always read it as “Welcome Home.” In just six minutes I would be in the driveway. Not waiting for a formal beginning, the celebratory reunion launched the moment the door opened. The reward of the journey was to fall into the embrace of family and sink into the comfort of knowing that the papers and projects of the semester were over. The bustle included exclaiming how tall everyone seemed, quickly stashing presents under the tree for my siblings, and giving a quick shake to those gifts that bore my name. The Christmas season is a kind of coming home. Christ30
mas allows us to reach Mile Marker Zero, the Savior who welcomes us home. The one who is forgiving of our failings, whose presence fills our present, and whose faithfulness fulfills our future. Christmas allows us to fall into the embrace of God “where the love light gleams.” Each year, the rhythmic recurrence of the Christmas season anchors us. The season reminds us to lay down our burdens, and revel in the unconditional love that is freely offered. Christ invites our curiosity as we investigate the gifts with our names on them. We shake them, ponder them, and then unwrap them to discover brightly colored hope, peace that fits like a glove, and a lifetime supply of grace. In these moments, we are reminded that while the gifts in and of themselves are precious, what makes them so meaningful is the relationship we have with the giver. Like a family board game, we discover that some gifts offer great joy, but only when shared between friends. Christmas offers us an opportunity to remember that the purpose of a present is to be given away, and the reception of a gift is incomplete without opening and experiencing the gift. Christmas is about coming home, to the one who knows you best and loves you most.
