Half a century

preaching the gospel: Harris retires but will always preach By William Seidel

It’s common to see churches replace pastors after so many years or, in some denominations, see pastors rotate churches after a few years. One particular church, though, had the same pastor for 50 years, but that all changed when Melvin Harris, who has been the pastor of Halesford Baptist Church in Westlake Corner for half a century, officially retired. Harris said he began to feel the calling of God to preach in his late 20s, but he originally didn’t want to do it full time. Harris talked about how he had a good job at a furniture company at Altavista and was singing in a quartet, which took up a decent amount of time for him. While he and his wife attended his former church in Huddleston, Harris got his first experience preaching by filling in for his pastor, Joe Sternum, every once in a while. Sternum then mentioned to pastors around the area that Harris would fill in if they needed someone to cover a Sunday service while they were on vacation or attending other matters. “I began to do more and more filling in,” Harris said. He stated he was becoming more of a freelance pastor during that time. Still, he wasn’t sold on becoming a full-time pastor. Harris said he still tried to use an excuse that he was still reaching to people with the gospel by singing in the quartet, which was still true, but it wasn’t where God wanted him to be. There are plenty of instances in the Bible that speak of people being reluctant of God’s plan for them. Examples include in the book of Exodus, where Moses was hesitant to fulfill God’s plan for him to lead his people out of slavery. In the Book of Jonah, Jonah ran from God’s plan for him to go to Nineveh and speak of the prophesy that will happen to them if they don’t turn from their sinful ways. As both stories go, Moses and Jonah willfully surrendered and accepted their destiny to fulfill God’s plan for them. There is one book that Harris mentions and compares to his situation of fulfilling God’s plan for him to be a pastor. In the Book of Judges, Gideon was told by God to go fight the Midianites but humbly asked God to give him a sign to be sure. He then placed fleece of wool outside and told God if there is dew on the fleece only and it’s dry on the ground, then he will fight and save Israel from the Midianites. The next morning, Gideon awoke to find dew on the fleece and the ground completely dry. Gideon again wanted to make sure one more time. He placed the fleece outside again and told God that if the ground was covered in dew but the fleece wasn’t, then that’s when he would know for sure. Gideon arose the next morning to find the fleece completely dry while the ground was covered in dew. Harris said his fleece was asking God to show him if he was meant to be a pastor. “I said, ‘God if you really want me to preach then open doors for me, and he did,’” Harris said. He mentioned that he began to fill in for pastors in the surrounding area more often, but Harris again laid out another fleece to be sure and asked God if he really wanted him to be a preacher then to give him

a small church that’s far enough away from home to where the people don’t know him but close enough to commute. Harris said that he wanted a small church that couldn’t afford a full-time pastor. That church that Harris asked for was Halesford Baptist Church. Back in 1970, the pulpit committee was searching for a pastor for the church. Two members on the committee were women who worked at the once known Moneta Dress Factory with Harris’ sister. One of the women on the committee asked her if she knew anybody

that could take the pastor position at Halesford Baptist Church. His sister contacted him, and the rest was history. When Harris first got to the church, he made it clear that he wasn’t doing it for the money because he already had a good job that paid his bills, and all he requested was to just be reimbursed for his gas mileage. With a chuckle, Harris said his first paycheck for the month was $15. “Times have changed a little bit,” he said.

Today, Halesford Baptist Church has about 450 attend services (before the pandemic). Back then, the church was much smaller, with about 20-25 people attending Harris’ first sermon at the church. The church also has gone through a number of renovations during Harris’ 50-year tenure as pastor. During his first year as pastor, Lost Mountain Road was a gravel road, and the church didn’t have any plumbing. Those who needed to use the restroom during that time had to use outhouses across the road. The once little white church has gone through seven building projects during Harris’ tenure as pastor. The church began with the first project in the mid ’70s to install a little four-room addition on the side of the church for Sunday school and indoor plumbing for a bathroom. From there, the church continued to improve, adding in a new worship sanctuary, bigger rooms for Sunday school, a basketball gym and more. The white church is still in use as a chapel after the new worship sanctuary was built in the early ’90s. Harris was quick to point out that none of the church’s improvements was because of him, but it was the church as a whole that made it possible. As for the new pastor for the church, his name is Craig Polston, and he was preaching in Northern Virginia before accepting the pastor position at Halesford Baptist Church. Before retirement, Harris said he will do everything he can to get him and his family settled in and ready to go. He also has made it clear to the church to give Polston a chance and mentioned that he has preached about supporting and encouraging their new pastor in his latest sermons. Harris believes that Polston will do a great job as pastor of the church. “I’m 100 percent behind him,” Harris said. “I think it’s going to be a very easy transition for the church.” When Moses, Jonah and Gideon listened to God’s plan for them, the blessings flowed in. The same can be said for Harris. What was once a little church that had no plumbing system and a few people gathering for service has now become one of the more well-known churches around the Smith Mountain Lake area with hundreds attending. Harris again stated that it was all part of God’s plan for Halesford Baptist Church. As far as what his plans are for retirement, Harris said that he will still be involved within the community such as preaching funeral services if asked, visiting people in hospitals, etc. He added that although a pastor retires, they never fully stop preaching the gospel to the people, something he personally loves to do. “I love to minister to people,” said Harris. “I intend to continue with that.”

Virginia State Teacher of the Year, Swann defies the odds By William Seidel

“The Virginia Teacher of the Year for 2021 is … the Region 6 Teacher of the Year, Anthony Swann from Franklin County Public Schools. Congratulations Mr. Swann!” Those words said by Virginia Superintendent of Public Instructions Dr. James F. Lane via Zoom carried a lot of weight for Swann as he sat there in disbelief with his mouth open and soon covered it with his left hand as he was grinning from ear to ear. “I really didn’t think I’d win it,” he said. “Last year’s winner was from Region 6, so I didn’t think they would choose the same region again.” That is correct. Last year’s Virginia Teacher of the Year for 2020 was Andrea Carson Johnson, who teaches 12th grade English at Salem High School. It’s been a roller coaster of overwhelmingly positive emotions for Swann these past few months. It all started in March, when he was selected as Rocky Mount’s Teacher of the Year. Little did he know that was just the beginning. A couple of months later in May, Swann was awarded the Franklin County’s Teacher of the Year. It was his first time winning such an award, and at the time, it was the peak of his teaching career. Until he recently reached a new milestone. On Sept. 18, Swann mentioned that his principal, Dr. Lisa Newell, sent out an email the day before informing the entire faculty and staff that Superintendent Dr. Mark Church wanted to meet with the entire school at 1 p.m. in a Zoom meeting. “I was thinking that it must’ve been important for him to be taking instructional time to address the entire school; my thoughts were centered toward COVID-19,” Swann said. Who could blame him? After all, 2020 has definitely been a hectic year for public schools in the state of Virginia. With that in mind, Swann thought he was going to be getting the news that Franklin County was going to go all virtual the rest of the semester, but what

really happened turned out to be the new peak of his teaching career. In a Zoom call with Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, he was announcing eight teachers across the state who were named region teacher of the year for their respective areas. The eight winners also were named finalists for the 2021 Virginia Teacher of the Year. Before his name was called as Region 6 Teacher of the Year, it all hit Swann on what was about to happen. “I instantly jumped out of my chair, and I was like, ‘No way, no way, no way. You have got to be kidding me,’” he said. It was anything but a joke. As soon as Northam announced that Swann was Region 6 Teacher of the Year, he was again left speechless and in tears, as he was celebrated at his school. “I cried tears of joy until I had a headache,” he said. That peak of his career was soon surpassed as Swann was named Virginia Teacher of the Year via Zoom by Lane three weeks later. “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the opportunity to serve his children,” Swann said after learning of his selection. “It’s been a dream of mine ever since I was 11 years old. … Words cannot express how humbled and grateful I am to have this honor. I plan to utilize this opportunity to give hope to those students who feel as though their current trauma or economic hardship is the end of their world.” For him personally, Swann knows all about experiencing trauma and economic hardships. In fact, he lived through both of those scenarios his entire childhood. He recalls when he was just a toddler roaming the streets of Chicago because he was homeless. His mother would leave him and his siblings alone for weeks, and they would have to fend for themselves. That was just the beginning of his struggles, as Swann and his family moved to Danville when he was 5, but things didn’t get better for him; instead, they got worse. Swann mentioned that his father didn’t care or claim him, and he watched his mother get arrested while she

was drunk in the middle of the night. It was then that Swann and his siblings were put into foster care. One day during fourth grade, a Social Services employee came to take Swann away, and he remembers that he was embarrassed, hurt, humiliated and wanting his life to end. His fourth-grade teacher, Jerretta Wilson, grabbed and hugged him before he was taken away and told him that everything was going to be alright. That is when Swann knew what he wanted to be in life, and that was a teacher. During his time in foster care, Swann found a way to cope with the trauma of not being with his parents, and that was playing school. He did this for three years until he was 14. “I literally did this every single day, including Saturdays and Sundays,” Swann said. He remembered how he would make his brother, Darol Swann Jr., mad because they shared a room and he would take up the entire space to use as a classroom. His sisters, Gale - Anthony Swann Ferguson and Takilla Florence, were supportive of him and allowed Swann to use their stuffed animals and baby dolls to be his students when he played school. This motivated Swann to not let his current situation dictate his future; rather, he took his destiny into his own hands and chased his dream of being a teacher. He had a little help on the way as well. At age 14, the same teacher that helped comfort Swann when a Social Services employee came to take him away found him and offered to help him. She encouraged him to make something of himself and stayed by his side the whole way. One instance that Wilson helped Swann was during his time in college by picking him up every single day, so he could get to his student teacher placement, as he didn’t have a car at the time. Simply put, Swann felt the impact that a teacher can have on their students, and he worked and strived every day so that he could be to his students what Wilson was to him. Once he got out of foster care at age 21, Swann entered his work field ready to impact lives. Not only has he done that for 14 years, but his teaching was finally recognized, and at the highest level in the state. Winning the County, Region, and State Teacher of the Year is still a surreal feeling for Swann, but it has ignited an even greater fire to serve his children in whatever capacity needed in order to help them succeed in life. “I simply love serving children. They are my life; they are my purpose,” Swann said. “No matter the accolade, no matter the position, as long as I can serve children, my heart is happy.” For Swann, his fourth-grade teacher believed in him, and it was

a main driving force to help him overcome all the odds that were stacked against him. Now, he wants his students to know that their fifth-grade teacher believes they can be anything they want to if they don’t give up and keep pushing forward. Swann wants to use his award as a motivation for his students to let them know it’s quite possible to overcome any obstacle that life may throw at them. It’s something that Swann has been teaching his students all along. Last year, Swann established the Guys with Ties program for fifth graders, stressing the importance of integrity, honesty and respect. Students are required to dress to impress twice a month and participate in 45-minute lessons. He also invites guest speakers and motivators several times a year. Before the Zoom meeting ended, the new Virginia Teacher of the Year had a message for all educators. “Teachers, together we have the ability to change one life at a time through our influence,” Swann said in his closing comments. “Let’s continue to change the world, one child at a time.” Contributed

cruise puts beauty on the lake By William Seidel

After a successful “Dare to be Beautiful” cruise in August with local businesswomen Jessica “J Bohn” Bishop, Lisa Floyd and Aundrea Smiley, Virginia Dare Cruises decided to give the theme another go in October, and it turned out to be even more successful focusing on fall at the lake. Bishop claimed the first cruise was a great test cruise to see how they would want to do another in the future. “I had a great time on the last cruise, but this one just went to another level with the Halloween theme and renaming the cruise just a tad to ‘Dare to be Boo-tiful,’” she said. Laurie Stuckey, who does marketing for the Virginia Dare, came up with the idea of featuring small businesses on the boat and asked Bishop and Aundrea Smiley of Valor & Grace if they would co-host a themed cruise. The first cruise featured these two, and Lisa Floyd with mini paintings. This cruise featured Bishop, Floyd and more. Bishop had her section, which featured women’s accessories from “KEEPin’ Up with J Bohn.” The accessories included jewelry, clothing, bags, hats and other personalized items. Other vendors included handmade jewelry by “KinleyMae Jewelry,” which is ran by a young entrepreneur named Raven Smith, a junior at Staunton River High School. Serafina Spa also was on board taking part, giving out free massages and sharing their product line. Floyd, again, supplied the cruise with something hands-on, this time an adult coloring fall piece she drew of Smith Mountain Lake. The cruise started at 6 p.m. on a Thursday and lasted for two hours. Bishop noted that this cruise having wonderful weather and being at sunset is already appealing without the vendors on board. “For them to go on a sunset cruise, that in itself is worth what they

paid,” she said. Ticketholders also were treated to catering, which featured barbeque sliders and nachos prepared by Bishop, as well as macaroni and cheese prepared by Buddy’s BBQ. Desserts were served such as pumpkin rolls, chocolate and spice cupcakes, and a candy bar topped with chocolate, peanuts and candy corn. After the sunset and the evening cooled down, hot chocolate from the Smith Mountain Lake Coffee House was made available for drinking to keep warm. With a good selection of small business owners on board, the cruise saw lots of women of all different age ranges laughing, talking and enjoying themselves. These memories were captured on the cruise by Trevor Smith, owner of TAS Photography, who Bishop had come on the cruise to take photos throughout the evening to look back on and remember. After two successful cruises, Bishop has interest in doing a third cruise. “I would love to do it again,” she said. Bishop said she believes if another cruise happens, it will be in the spring and hopes that restrictions from COVID-19 will be done by then to host more vendors and passengers on the next cruise. Although that is months away, right now Bishop is counting her blessings from hosting these cruises and said she was thankful for the Virginia Dare for allowing her to do this again. Seeing how it turned out better than the first cruise, it’s understandable why she is grateful. “Last time, I think I was just so nervous. I didn’t know how it was going to go, so I came into this one knowing what to expect and how things were going to go,” Bishop said. “It was beyond my expectations.”

Come to the farm: Spring Valley Farm offers lots of outdoor activities By William Seidel

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a lot of restrictions on the daily lives of people. Because of this, many are doing activities outside to keep themselves occupied and practice social distancing. One of the most popular places around Smith Mountain Lake to social distance is Spring Valley Farm, which has 600 acres of land on Horseshoe Bend Road in Moneta. The family owned farm was originated by Garland Simmons and was under his watch for decades before he turned over the ownership to his son Chad Simmons and daughter-in-law Michelle Simmons. Open all seven days of the week, one of the main attractions of the farm is the trail rides, which is accessible to those who are 8 and older. Joanne Wardell, who is one of the managers of the farm, said all horses that are available for the trail rides are broke in and safe to use for everyone who wants to go riding. “The trail horses are thoroughly trained, beginners safe and kid safe,” she said. Wardell also mentioned that there is a lesson that comes with the trail ride. They take the participant and the horse inside the outdoor arena and teach the person how to turn, stop and control the horse properly, as well as other things before they go out riding. They cannot accept riders who are heavier than 300 pounds, and if someone is more than 250 pounds, they advise that person to let the farm know ahead of time so they can accommodate them with a horse and equipment that will make their visit more pleasant. The farm offers more activities than trail rides and wagon rides. They also host birthday parties, weddings, festivals, fundraisers, church gatherings, baby showers and more. Another popular area of the farm is the petting zoo, which features animals such as alpaca, donkeys, rabbits, llamas, sheep, goats and others. The most recognizable and popular animal at the petting zoo and farm in general is Sid the camel. The 2-year-old camel is the only one of its kind on the farm and has become popular not just on the farm but away from the farm, especially last year during Christmas season. “We started getting calls when everyone knew we had a camel,” Chad Simmons said. “We were somewhere every weekend with him for the Christmas scenes at churches.” The farm hosted its fall festival in October, which not only included their petting zoo, but horse-drawn wagon rides, pony rides, games, activities, vendors, pumpkin picking and more. The farm also had a haunted house called “Agony at the Farm,” which includes a horse-drawn wagon ride. There is still more that people can do at the farm, such as staying at its local cabins. The farm offers cabins for those who want to get away for a little bit in a country setting. The cabins include an in-ground swimming pool and a fishing pond that is kept stocked. No fishing license is required, but clients must bring their own fishing equipment. Chad Simmons said the cabins plus all the activities the farm offers is a great way for people to get away from the “bad news” of the world and relax. “Everybody that comes to the farm is just wanting a little peace of mind and to get away from the hustle and bustle,” he said.

| Small Business Spotlight | The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce has been busy recently with ribbon cuttings, and they haven’t slowed down. One of the most recent ones occurred in early October for Southlake Spa and Salt Room, located at 135 David Lane in Union Hall. It is a unique spa with a well-rounded list of services. One of their main services will be halotherapy. Halotherapy is dry salt therapy that utilizes a halogenerator to grind and crush 99.99 percent pure grade sodium chloride into micronized particles that are dispersed into a salt room, salt cave or dry salt aerosol that works to aid respiratory concerns and skin conditions. Owners Lori and Jeff Dupier decided to locate the spa on their 50-acre farm property, which is surrounded by a wooded area and gives clients a relaxing view to enjoy the outside nature to reduce stress and relax. The spa, which took two and a half years to finish, has a unique feature to it, as it includes a Butler grain bin. The bin was located in Poages Mill in Roanoke and was used to store grain for livestock. “We wanted to keep the agricultural component being as its Franklin County and this was a farm,” said Lori Dupier. Inside the bin are two rooms, one down and one upstairs. The bottom is known as the salt room, and sessions can last up to an hour. Cell service can be very limited in the room, so clients can bring something to read or lay in the chairs and just breathe in the salt. The salt particles that are breathed in helps thin out mucus and can help

Dupier mentioned she originally started to research salt therapy to help with a close family member who had respiratory problems. Other services the spa offers besides halotherapy and yoga are massages, reflexology, craniosacral and educational seminars. Dupier mentioned that she and her husband are beekeepers, and one thing that they will be doing for an educational seminar is having classes about pollinators, in which they will be giving people the honey during the class. Dupier also said that clients have the choice of having their massages inside or outside. Outside of the spa features walking trails, benches by the stream, and a lavender field that has over 450 lavender plants. Anyone who wants to have an appointment has to schedule beforehand. “We focus on quality over quantity,” she said. “We like your experience to be very pleasant.” Southlake Spa also offers organic herbal tea and has a wine and beer license to serve wine. Dupier said they “fashion it to the person’s preference” if the clients let them know ahead of time what they prefer. She said they want to have a wide variety of wines to choose from for their clients. She also mentioned that they might work with local wineries to highlight their wine in the future to help promote their products. “We want to be an asset to the community,” she said.

| Small Business Spotlight | It was overdue but welcome. After being open for nearly a year in the Smith Mountain Lake area, Soundz Hearing officially had their ribbon cutting at the end of September. Soundz Hearing is a hearing care provider ran by Timothy and Veronica Bratton, and the business provides complimentary hearing evaluation to be able to provide the appropriate hearing aids for patients. At the ribbon cutting, Timothy Bratton said that he is always asked how he got into the hearing aid business, and he said the reason was related to family — his own mother.

“I had to be her hearing aid,” he said, noting he always had to talk loudly so she could understand what he was saying. “The problem with that, though, if I kept doing that, well maybe mom would never get help.” Bratton then said his mom would get onto him and his siblings for “mumbling” even though they were talking clearly. He said then that fixing a hearing problem not only fixes the issue for the individual but also for their family, as they can communicate normally. “Hearing problem isn’t just a patient’s problem; it’s a family problem,” he said. Bratton said one of his most favorite parts of being in this field is seeing the reactions of spouses and family members lighting up and smiling when they realize that their relationships have been restored and they can communicate with them. After all, Bratton has experienced the difficulties that hearing loss brings to the family, so he has dedicated his services to help bring communication and hearing back to others and their families. Veronica Bratton spoke about how her mother was experiencing hearing loss as well, stating that when Timothy met her, Veronica told him that she was developing dementia and didn’t seem to remember anything. Timothy then told her she needed hearing aids. She told him that she was sure it wasn’t that, but Timothy promised her that what was happening to her mother was a hearing problem. “I told him that she’s been like this for years, and he said, ‘Exactly,’” Veronica Bratton said with a chuckle. “We brought her up to Lynchburg, gave her a pair of hearing aids, and guess what? She didn’t have dementia. She wasn’t understanding what we were saying, so she couldn’t remember it; she was just playing along.” Timothy followed that by telling the crowd that everybody who comes to the business will walk away with hearing aids. “We want everybody to hear,” he said. One of Timothy Bratton’s favorite quote comes from Helen Keller, who was asked if she could have her sight or hearing back, which would she choose. “She said without a shadow of a doubt, it would be hearing,” he said. “That’s what connects me to the world.”

Sports Spotlight: B Greathouse expects big things from Neighbors, Webster By William Seidel

Last season, the Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy boys’ basketball team saw lots of success, placing third in the state tournament. This season, though, will look much different for the Ospreys. Graduating nine seniors from last year’s team, Head Coach Mike Greathouse, who is in his second year as head coach, said this is unchartered territory for any basketball coach to go through that much turnover, but he is looking forward to seeing who will step up in the leadership role and mentioned senior Mason Neighbors as someone he is expecting to take charge. “He’s going to have to step up for us this year,” Greathouse said. “He’s very capable of that. Mason is a gentle giant, so he’s kind of quiet by nature, but we’re going to encourage him, and he’s going to have to step and take some of that verbal leadership in the timeouts or out on the floor for us. I think he’ll step up to the challenge with that.” Neighbors, who received second-team All-Southwest District from Virginia Association of Christian Athletes, was an important piece to the teams’ run in the playoffs with his size and strength. Another player who earned VACA honors last year for the Ospreys was Thomas Dean, who is now graduated but will be an assistant coach

this year. Dean said it won’t be much different helping Neighbors come out of his shell or improve his game, mentioning that he was always working with him whenever he got the chance on post moves or anything to help him. Dean mentioned, however, there is a different feeling being on the sideline coaching and not on the court playing. “It feels really weird,” Dean said. “But I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I absolutely love being in there with the guys and just helping in any way I can.” Although they lost a lot from last year’s team, they actually picked up a transfer over from the West Coast. That transfer is Cole Webster, who is a 6’8 shooting guard and has range from all over the court. Greathouse said he is going to help the team a lot. “He’s going to play a huge role. What I’ve seen in practice from him, not only is he a talent, but he’s got the length, he’s got the shooting, he plays well around the basket, he’s got great court vision, and he includes everybody,” he said. “I’m expecting great things from him.” Dean said Webster can almost score whenever he wants, but he

loves that he passes the ball to the open shot and trusts his teammates, which he said usually takes a while to develop. “That sometimes takes years to learn,” Dean said. They will look for Webster to step up with Neighbors since the team only has three returning players who saw minutes on the varsity level. Dean said last year, the team saw lots of success because they

trusted each other, and added if this year’s team can gel quickly, then they will be fine. Greathouse mentioned the offense this year might look different from last year and mentioned a motion offense to be able to utilize his guys in the post. He mentioned that the offense, as of now, will probably run through Webster.

Amanda Beverly, the new varsity coach for the Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy girls basketball team, will look to implement discipline and grit to her team in the upcoming season. “I want to be tough; I want the girls to be tough,” Beverly said after open gym. “I want them to be scrappy. That’s how I learned how to play, and I think that can win ball games over talent sometimes.” The new coach said she wants to be a team that is conditioned and running constantly, so they can wear their opponent out physically and mentally. She also said that her team will do full-court press and man-to-man defense a lot. When asked if her team will revolve around shooting from threepoint range or working it down in the post, Beverly said it will be a mixture of both and depend on the defense that the opponent will set up. Beverly also pointed out that there will be no “superstar” on the team, but every player will hold the same value to the team and will be treated as such. She said she wants to be able to go to her bench and be able to matchup with their opponent. “I can’t express versatility enough,” Beverly said. “I want to be a team that is able to have a buffet of options to pull from.” She said that can range from how the girls are looking on a certain

night to who has the hot hand shooting. As far as coaching philosophy is concerned, some coaches are a player’s coach and some rather show tough love. Beverly said one thing that will be important to her is that she wants to be a teacher of the game to her girls and she wants them to be coachable. Because of that, Beverly said she wants to get to know every single one of her players and find out what each of them will respond better at. There is one aspect that Beverly will hold her players to, and that’s being committed. “I expect commitment. I want a commitment from the girls,” she said. Beverly believes this upcoming season will be an improvement from last season on the court, but that’s not entirely how she is going to measure the success of her team. For her, it’s more than just wins and losses. She wants her girls to know and remember what it’s all about in the end. “Everything that we do, how we play, sportsmanship on and off the court, in school, I just want these girls to really shine and let God’s light shine through them to other people,” Beverly said. “If I’m able to help them do that on the court, then hopefully they’ll take that off the court, and to me that’s a successful season.”

Sports Spotlight: Smallwood makes dream a reality as new SRHS athletic director By William Seidel

Josh Smallwood has been at Staunton River High School since 2013 and has been a teacher and coach for the Golden Eagles, and now he has taken his dream job as athletic director. “I’ve always wanted to help folks and be able to have a positive impact on people,” Smallwood said. “I just felt like moving over from teaching and coaching football, I might be able to have a bigger impact on more kids and continue building our good programs that we have.” He said he is stepping away from teaching and coaching to be able to concentrate on his duties as the new AD for SRHS. Smallwood was recently the offensive coordinator for the Golden Eagles football team. He said the decision to step down from that position was a “really bittersweet moment” and it wasn’t the ideal time considering the Golden Eagles football team is returning at least 17 starters. Even though it was bittersweet, Smallwood said he just has to look at it from a different angle. He said he’s always gravitated toward administration and leadership roles. He has had experience prior to getting the AD gig. Before coming to SRHS, Smallwood was the head athletic trainer at the University of Illinois Springfield, which he said was more of an administration type job. He told his wife if he were to ever get back in the administration that it would be more of a role as an AD. “It kind of suits my strengths,” Smallwood said. “It kind of brings things that I used to do eight or nine years ago at the college level.” Smallwood calls this type of job his dream job and said he’s “pretty

pumped” and on cloud nine to be the new AD. He also noted that if there was a year to step into an AD role, this was the year to do it, mentioning that because there are no games and practices going on, there isn’t that much stress right now as he gets adjusted to his new role. As far as what he will bring to SRHS in his new position, Smallwood said the main thing that he wants everybody and the student athletes to feel is the excitement about being a Golden Eagle, and he wants to support them every way possible to make sure they are successful on and off the field or court to be prepared for life after high school. “I’m going to be their biggest fan, and I want to know what they need to be successful,” he said. “I’ll be reaching out to the community on how we can help our students at SRHS ultimately be prepared for a lifetime of success, not just while they’re at the high school.” Smallwood has already hit the ground running in his new role, and said they are finalizing their schedules right now, with most of them “fairly done” and hopes to have them available to the public in about a week or two. Because of his experience in the administration field and his desire to always want to help his student athletes, Smallwood is confident he made the right choice and is looking forward to serving many years serving as the school’s AD. “These jobs don’t come open very often,” he said. “It’s just an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.”

Sports Spotlight: FCHS volleyball coach Dula expects her seniors to be major contributors By William Seidel

The Franklin County High School Volleyball team will return a good portion of its team from last season, which finished 13-13 in the regular season plus the playoffs. The Eagles’ season ended on a loss to Ocean Lakes, 3-1. This is the time of year when fall sports, such as volleyball, is already close to the middle of their season. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the falls sports season has been postponed until winter. For FCHS volleyball seniors Taylor Anderson, Callie Altice and Lauren Stone, they’re grateful that the season is going to happen, but it’s still a weird feeling coming back to school and not having volleyball to look forward to in the evening. “It’s been a part of our routine since seventh grade,” Anderson said as Altice and Stone looked on with agreement. “Every time when we begin school, we know volleyball is coming up, and this is our last year to be able to do that routine one more time.” All three seniors started playing organized volleyball when they were in the seventh grade, and volleyball games and practices in the fall is what they have come to know and expect for the last five years. This is a season the three seniors believe can still be memorable despite the challenges that the pandemic has presented. The Eagles

will be a relatively young team this season, having to replace just three players from last season’s team: Alex Christoff, Rachel Justice and Reese Turner. Altice believes that although they’re young, the Eagles have an advantage that most teams in their district don’t have that will help them have a great season. “A lot of our juniors are more advanced than a typical volleyball junior. A lot of them played on varsity last year as a sophomore,” Altice said. “I think we’ll have a pretty good season.” That junior class features a lot of talent and is highlighted by Courtney Bryant, who just recently committed to North Carolina State University. Bryant held other Division 1 offers such as Duke, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Auburn. These three seniors will be counted on just as much on and off the court for this season, according to Head Coach Kaitlyn Dula, who is in her third year leading the volleyball program. “My three seniors this year are all super flexible and play multiple positions, which is a fantastic quality to have in volleyball,” Dula said. Dula mentioned that at the time when the pandemic hit and put the fall sports season in jeopardy, she gave the team some space and grace to deal with the whole ordeal. workouts on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Stone talked about the workout plans the team did to try to stay in shape and keep their skills as sharp as they could. “Throughout the summer, we did workouts on Zoom and she (Dula) would lead the workouts,” Stone said. “We’ve also met a couple of times and ran on the track. We try to do as much as we can.” Altice followed Stone’s comment and said the chemistry has been really good despite not being able to see each other because they have all been communicating and motivating each other. As the season inches closer, Dula has said she is definitely going to rely on her seniors to keep the team engaged and excited about whatever type of season they might have. She also said she has the same expectations for her seniors despite the circumstances. “These girls need to be role models for the babies (underclassmen) under them, which encompasses everything from being on time, having good grades/behavior in school, leading in mile times, giving max

effort in practice and games, and just having an overall positive attitude about this new crazy season that we may have,” Dula said. She also mentioned how she plans to utilize them and how they are valuable to the team on the court. For Altice, she will play middle or right side hitter. Dula said they will count on her to be a huge presence on the front row. “Callie usually leads the team in blocks, and she also has extreme precision in her hitting. She can place the ball in any hole on the court for a kill,” she said. Stone will probably stay at setter, but Dula said she has excellent defensive skills. She also noted that the team relies on her ability to stay level headed under pressure, and she has a high volleyball IQ. “She has an intelligence on the court that allows her to know who to push the ball to when she’s setting that is fundamental in winning games,” Dula said. Anderson has been Ms. Utility for the Eagles volleyball team, and

Dula mentioned she is her “everywhere” girl, saying she executes wonderfully under any circumstances. Dula said they will rely on her for hitting. “She has this heavy hand when she hits that makes it practically impossible for the defense to know where the ball is going. Also, her serve is phenomenal. She is one of the few that can ace me if/when I hop in to play in practice,” she said. When it comes to a someone’s senior year, one thing they really look forward to is their last matchup with a school rival or a school that has given them fits in the past. When asked what teams they want to face on the court one more time, the two teams mentioned were Lord Botetourt and Hidden Valley. Last year, the Eagles dropped the contest in the fifth set 19-17, and Stone said that was a really close game that they should’ve won. Lord Botetourt, on the other hand, was a much different opponent for the Eagles. Not just for them, but the entire state. Last season, the Cavaliers went undefeated on their way to the state championship. “They were definitely our toughest team last year,” Anderson said. Here’s the kicker, though. Not only did they not lose a game, they never lost a set. This season will look much different for Lord Botetourt, as they have lost their entire starting lineup. Anderson and Altice both mentioned that Lord Botetourt was a team that would

get in their heads mentally before they took the court, which gave them an advantage, but they believe they are mentally ready to face them this year. Even though they are in the beginning of their senior year, all three do have an idea of what their plans are outside of high school. Anderson plans to enroll at James Madison University and major in elementary education and hopes to be a first or second grade teacher. Stone wants to enroll at the University of Virginia and major in PreMed with hopes of becoming a Plastic Surgeon. Altice is the only senior who is considering playing volleyball in college and hasn’t decided where she wants to go yet, but she has hopes of being a pharmaceutical rep for ag companies. Before they move on to college, the seniors just want one more chance to play volleyball together. Although this season will be much different than anything they’ve seen, that won’t stop Dula from having high expectations for her team and her seniors. “My girls know me and my methods well at this point. I’ve coached or seen them all for several years now, and they know and understand my high expectations. We want to win, and to do that, everyone has to fully buy in and work their tail off,” Dula said. “If they do, I definitely believe we can continue to have that winning record we have become accustomed to the past couple of seasons.”

THE WELL DIGGER “Uncle Jim was a Godly man,” said Donna H. Wright, one of the “Harris girls” from the next farm I grew up with. She was speaking of Jim Reynolds, whose wife, Annie, was her daddy’s sister. Reynolds lived “on the mountain” in our community, whose home stood beside his church — the “Church of God of Prophecy.” Not far from him lived his brother, George Reynolds. Wright went on to say that Jim Reynolds could preach a sermon anytime they had “testimony” at the church, and died in a very singular way. He had just sung “I will meet you over yonder,” gone around and shaken hands with all the people, a ritual he performed each Sunday. On this particular day, he altered his tradition by shaking hands twice with Peggy Johnson, one of Wright’s sisters, and her husband, then went to his pew. As Johnson relates, “After shaking hands with Wayne and me the second time, he went over and sat down. When Brother Nichols got up to preach, he just slumped over.” That was in 1980. Two years later, his brother followed him to the cemetery. You could spot Jim Reynolds around the community in an old Chevrolet truck that sat crooked on its chassis. His hat always sat on his head at the same angle, perhaps for balance. When not on the road, church or at his main vocation, he could be seen in his strawberry patch next to his house. He raised the old-time berries, no bigger than your thumbnail, but sweet and wild-tasting, so different from today’s swollen effusiveness. Dad was a slavish devotee of the Reynolds berries, and Mr. Jim always had a few pint baskets picked and

on hand for “Mr. Ayers.” But Reynolds’ reputation in the community did not rest with his gardening or his prayers. His vocation, and that of his brother, was well-digging. Though very different in their religion and habits, the men were devoted to each other and worked together in a trade that required absolute trust in the other’s ability to perform. Note that it’s hand-dug wells we’re considering here. There was no power-driven drill, just men with a windlass, a bucket with chain and a shorthandled shovel. Cliff Byrd, who would later become a restaurateur and marina-owner, worked for them as a teenager. “We started digging a hole 42 inches across,” he said, then added jokingly, “I couldn’t even fit in one today!” Byrd continued, “ We’d dig down and haul the dirt up in the bucket. After awhile, we’d have to ‘timber’ the sides with white oak strips. We’d wedge ourselves with our backs and push the strips in with our feet. That was called timbering.” One of the Reynolds’ brothers’ last jobs was lowering the depth of my father’s well by two pipe sections. They both died not long after. The most amazing thing about Jim Reynolds, the wheel horse of the operation, was his ability to locate a good well site. You can imagine how important that is, particularly when you’re digging by hand. Jim told Dad that forked sticks and dowsing rods were no use to him. He walked the land, looking at the topography and figuring how the water veins ran. On our main farm, the old well with the hand pump only refilled at the rate of one gallon per minute, not enough for modern usage. After the drilling company got no more than that at two locations, Jim Reynolds walked down the hollow and found a spot that produced 15! He did the same at my home in later life. The well company employed a dowser that predicted there was no place in the vicinity that would produce more than two gallons per minute. We called on Mr. Jim. I can still see him walking down my lane past the magnolia tree, almost to the main road, then turned. He started back — paused — gazed across to where the pasture sloped, then came back and stuck a stick just out of the lane right at the magnolia. “The vein’s here,” he declared. When the drill finished, we had 5.5 g.p.m. So it was with Jim Reynolds. There seemed matters in heaven and earth he understood better than most men. Donna Wright has it right. He was a Godly man.

The Smith Mountain Lake Rotary Club hasn’t been able to hold any events since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March. In early October, they were finally able to host an event for the first time in almost seven months, holding the 2020 Lobster Fest at Hot Shots. The event started at 5 p.m. on a Saturday, Oct. 3, and was a huge success, as tickets were sold out and more than 300 lobsters were served along with other side dishes such as corn, potatoes and mushrooms. For first-year President Charlene Jones, this event was much needed. “Everybody was so happy to be out,” she said, mentioning both the Rotary Club and all who bought tickets. Not only was the event much needed, but Jones said in March when the pandemic hit that the club was “apprehensive” because of businesses shutting down and events being canceled. A well-known event that the Rotary Club does is “Night at the Races,” but that event was canceled due to COVID-19. Fortunately, restrictions have eased up to where events like this can take place as long as there is social distancing, which the Rotary Club made sure was happening since the Lobster Fest was held outdoors where Hot Shots hosts live music sessions. “People wanted to get out and be with their friends, and this was an opportuopportu nity for them to come out, socialize, enjoy the delicious lobster and still be safe,” Jones said. People who purchased a meal ticket could also take their meals to go. This was the third year that the SML Rotary Club held the event. It’s not hard to understand why the Rotary Club sold out of tickets, considering all the lobsters were ordered from Maine, which is widely considered to have the best lobsters in the United States. Not only was it the third event, but it was the most successful one so far, according to Jones. The first two events sold roughly 200 meal tickets each, but the third one smashed those numbers by more than 100. Jones said they had to cutoff selling tickets because they needed to be able to know how many lobsters they needed to order from Maine and then have the time to be able to prepare the food. The money made will be distributed to multiple charities, according to Jones. Jones gave a shoutout to the SML community for supporting the Lobster Fest and said their next event will be at Hot Shots for the Christmas tree sales, which will have both big and small trees. It will be a first-come, first-serve sale. The SML Rotary Club is one of 34,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide and is a service organization with the stated purpose to bring together businesses and professional leaders in order to provide humanity service to advance goodwill and peace around the world.
