A letter from our Chamber President As Groesbeck, the state of Texas, and the whole world continues to battle this COVID-19 pandemic, I am still praying that you are staying safe and well. I don’t think any of us had any idea, back in March when this first started, that we would still be dealing with this and still have no idea how much longer it will be before we can go back to a normal routine (if ever). As mentioned before, most chamber activities have been suspended until we get approval that it is safe to start reconvening. Scooter Kennedy has stayed on as our Chamber of Commerce Director and Jennifer Paul took over management of the Groesbeck Convention Center with Scooter’s assistance. The first Grand Prix was held on Labor Day weekend and was a huge success. It was held at Old Fort Parker and will be an annual event. In addition to the cars that participated in the Grand Prix, they also had classic and antique cars from all over the country that were being shown inside the fort walls. The racing was very exciting and I even witnessed a 360 spinout, right in front of me. And the driver managed not to hit anything or anyone! There were also many vendors. The last weekend In May, 2021 will be our Heritage Festival, which will also be the celebration of Groesbeck’s 150 year anniversary. We had planned to hold it this past May, but were forced to cancel it due to COVID-19. The groundwork for 2021’s event has been laid, but we could use some more committee members to help make this event a huge success for our city and community. If you would be interested in joining the committee, please let me know. There are many things between now and the event that need planning. Groesbeck Study Club invites women to join The Groesbeck Study Club will hold its first meeting for its fiscal year on September 15. The order of business for this meeting will be the installation of officers and a review of programs for the coming year. The Study Club, a woman’s organization founded in 1946 with an emphasis on encouraging the education of children and an interest in current affairs, meets once monthly on the third Tuesday from September to May. The organization still holds true to its original goals. To date, the club has awarded over $150,000 in scholarship money to Groesbeck High School graduates. The organization also purchases the embroidered blankets given to Groesbeck students at the annual awards assembly. Many readers are familiar with the Study Club nuts that are sold each fall to raise money for the scholarships and blankets. In addition, Study Club members provide school supplies for area schools, Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for needy families, and Christmas gift for area children. To keep abreast of current affairs, this year’s programs will include presentations by Judge Richard Duncan, an update on the Prairie Hill Wind Project, a report on the Groesbeck Heritage 150th Anniversary Celebration, and information regarding the Limestone Medical Center services. In addition, meetings are planned that focus on art and woodworking. If you are a woman living in the Groesbeck area who is interested in supporting our schools and the community, please contact Janice Levi at jlevi@rightturnonly.net about joining.

Convention Center gets manager, Kennedy to remain Director By Tom Hawkins

The Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce and the City of Groesbeck wish to make an important announcement in regard to the Groesbeck Convention Center, located at 106 East Navasota Street near downtown Groesbeck. The Convention Center is a place where many events from the community and area are hosted. The Center has a small meeting room and a very large meeting room or banquet hall and an outside veranda. The Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce’s goal is to help attract business to the town and also to help host many special events in Groesbeck. Scooter Kennedy has been executive director of the Chamber of Commerce for the past seven and a half years. During that time, Kennedy has also served as manager of the Groesbeck Convention Center. Kennedy has decided to remain as executive director of the Chamber of Commerce but has resigned as manager of the Groesbeck Convention Center. Kennedy’s office will still be housed in the Chamber office which is located inside the Convention Center. Upon Kennedy’s departure from the manager position, the board has chosen Jennifer Paul to become the manager of the Groesbeck Convention Center effective Aug. 1. Jennifer is currently the editor/general manager of the Groesbeck Journal, the city’s longtime newspaper. She helps organize and designs “A Glance of Groesbeck”, a Chamber related quarterly magazine, also published by the Groesbeck Journal. “I look forward to being the manager of the Groesbeck Convention Center,” stated Jennifer Paul. “My home is located very near the Convention Center, so, it will be very easy for me to check on the facility both day and night. I think the convention center is beneficial not only for Groesbeck but for the entire county and Central Texas area.” Jennifer will remain as editor/general manager of the Groesbeck Journal. Scooter Kennedy has lived in the Groesbeck all of his life. He is a 1977 graduate of Groesbeck High School and a 1982 graduate of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. While in high school, Kennedy played in the school band. He also played in the GHS Jazz Band, and this Jazz Band provided most of the music for some of the productions

of Groesbeck’s famed Red Stocking Follies. Scooter and his wife, Terry, are the parents of three daughters and just welcomed their fourth grandchild this week. Jennifer Paul is a 2006 graduate of Mexia High School but has lived in Groesbeck for several years. She graduated from the International Academy of Design in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She has worked for the Groesbeck Journal for nearly ten years and took on the role of editor/ general manager in 2016. Jennifer is known for her ability as a graphic design artist and her work in the newspaper industry. Jennifer came to work for the Journal when Tom Hawkins was Editor-Publisher in 2011. Hawkins stated, “The community should be proud to have Jennifer as a major part of this community. Chamber of Commerce Structure and Organization Each chapter of a chamber is governed by a board of directors who advise the chapter on strategies and policies determined by the chapter's mission. The board manages day-to-day affairs and updates the chapter policies. Board members, also referred to as an executive council, are elected within each chapter. Most chapters have an acting president and CEO, for example. Members of the board are elected based on their leadership experience, business background, and ability to execute chapter goals. In addition to a governing board of directors, a chapter will have at least one employee. Some chapters may have more than one employee and be structured like a business. Employees work to market the chapter, in overseeing memberships, and in tracking the chapter's finances. In addition to the employees, a chapter has committees to focus on executing specific goals based on the chapter's mission — such as education, environment, or healthcare. Members of the chapter can volunteer for these committees to get more involved. How a Chamber of Commerce Functions A chamber of commerce chapter is made up of a dues-based membership. Each chapter offers different levels of membership, along with unique volunteer opportunities and a dues structure. 80% of respondents in a Shapiro Group survey were more likely to purchase goods or services in the future from companies belonging to a chamber of commerce. Each chapter is designated as a 501(c)(6) corporation under the federal tax law. This means a chapter is a

nonprofit entity with the authority to represent its membership in matters of policy and debate (unlike charitable organizations that do not act on behalf of members). Dues are required by each member to contribute to the overall operating costs. In addition to dues, a chamber can raise money to cover additional operating costs by holding fundraising activities and charging fees to chamber events. These costs help the chapter stay operational since multiple businesses rely on their local chamber for networking and resources.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE A chapter can be found at the local, state, city, regional, or national level. Some chapters are even associated with specific neighborhoods within a community. Still others are formed to represent a group of specific business interests. Examples of this include female business owners chapters or the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Since each chapter has its own mission focused on economic vitality throughout a designated area, each can support different industries or initiatives. For example, some focus on economic development while others connect a specific community to local businesses. While each chamber acts independently, multiple chambers can join together to form a larger, collective group serving a similar interest. For instance, several county chapters can join together to form a larger regional chapter to pool together resources.

WHAT IS CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS? WHY DOES EVERY BUSINESS NEED TO ACCEPT CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS?

If you own or manage a business and don’t know the definition of contactless payment, the key is in the words. “Contactless” payment is a way for consumers to pay for goods and services without using traditional debit or credit card. Unlike typical debit and credit cards, contactless payment never touches the point of sale (POS) terminal. When you make a purchase at your favorite retailer, you either swipe or insert your chip card into the POS terminal. The magnetic strip on your card contains your bank information, which enables the retailer to take the proper funds from your account. This magnetic strip was first used in 1950 and remains on major credit cards today. The issue with this magnetic strip is risk of fraud. When your bank information is stored on a magnetic strip, it makes it easy for hackers to steal your bank information and make fraudulent charges. Even with the evolution of chip cards, there is still a great risk of compromising your bank information, especially if retailers haven’t updated to chip card readers, and since cards still have magnetic strips. So, technology experts developed contactless payment. You can pay for goods and services through a card, mobile devices, watches, and other wearable devices. It makes transactions quick and painless, at any business with the right equipment and display the ‘Wi-Fi’ symbol on their POS or terminal. If your business payment system does not show this symbol or you are not sure about accepting Contactless Payments, talk to a local payments professional about getting new hardware.

HOW DO CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS WORK?

Contactless payment operates on near field communication (NFC) technology. It uses radio frequency identification (RFID), and devices communicate with the payment reader when they are within centimeters of the POS terminal. When you tap or wave your card or device over the payment reader, payment information is transmitted through RFID. It is the same technology as toll tags, but with a limited distance from the reader.

WHAT DOES MY POINT OF SALE TERMINAL NEED TO ACCEPT CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS? Contactless payments can be made with credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, and various smartphone applications, such as Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Pay, etc… Your point of sale equipment needs a type of reader for Contactless payments. And must be programmed properly so you get paid. What are examples of contactless payment acceptance methods?

If the business accepts contactless payments, you’ll see a symbol that looks like the Wi-Fi symbol to indicate that you can make contactless payment. If your credit or debit card displays the Wi-Fi symbol on it, you can use it, as well as the EMV chip or Magnetic Strip. If not, you can call your bank or card company and they can send you a new card with Contactless built-in. From a customer’s point of view, since almost everyone carries a smartphone, here are three of the most popular smartphone contactless payment providers. Apple Pay: There is no app you need to download with Apple Pay. You use a preprogrammed app called a “Wallet.” This is where you store your credit cards to make payments through Apple Pay. Apple pay doesn’t constantly keep transactional information related to your account. Google Pay is another popular form of payment. You can check out in hundreds of apps without having to take the time to input your card information. Google Pay is compatible with thousands of websites. Samsung Pay is the contactless payment provider used by Samsung mobile users. It enables you to carry credit, debit, gift, and membership cards all in one place. When you use Samsung Pay, you can feel confident that your transactions are protected because each transaction requires to be authenticated with your fingerprint, pin number, or iris scan.

4 BENEFITS OF CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS HELP CONSUMERS AND MERCHANTS ALIKE. 1. More secure than regular bank cards When this technology first developed, people were extremely wary about the security of paying through their phone. After all, what’s to stop a hacker from hacking your phone to steal your card information? The opposite is true! These contactless payment providers are safer than regular bank cards. They are authenticated payments, which makes them hard to breach. Not to mention, the data on your card is encrypted and constantly changing for your own protection. 2. Quicker checkout In this fast-paced world, people want to get out and get moving. They don’t want to wait in long lines. With contactless payment, you speed up the check out process and get your customers out the door faster. When you use contactless payment, you don’t need to enter your pin or sign for anything. This applies up to a certain price limit, which is based on the contactless payment provider. Even if you need to enter your pin or sign for larger purchases, the process is must faster than using a card.

More customers mean more sales for your business. Not only will you earn more in sales, but your customers will be happy because you reduced their wait time. 4. Contactless is safer/healthier Even when there is not a Pandemic, handling cash and plastic debit/credit cards by clerks from customers, can pass germs such as colds, flu, etc… Now with the Covid 19 crisis, this is even more important to keep staff and customers safe. Your reputation is at risk if you don’t do all you can to keep customers and your employees safe and healthy. Whether they use a card or a smartphone, or some other device, touching during the payment process is totally eliminated.

Most businesses can buy anything online, BUT DON’T purchase payment devices and services on the web! REVVED UP First annual Groesbeck Grand Prix puts performance in overdrive By Alexandra Cannon

The first Groesbeck Grand Prix is now in the rearview mirror, and about 400 spectators and racers traveled from near and far to enjoy the two-day motorsport event on the historic grounds of Old Fort Parker. Thanks to the overall success of the weekend, organizer Mike Satterfield is already planning for a future event. “We are already looking towards next year and how we can improve the event, add new elements, and incorporate more community members and businesses,” Satterfield said. “Countless people from drivers to spectators to vendors all said they couldn’t wait to come back and loved the venue of Old Fort Parker.” Through partnership with companies, including Gulf Racing Fuels, Hagerty, and Drive Toward a Cure, a non-profit that raises funds for research and patient care in dealing with Parkinson’s Disease, and with exposure to a large automotive audience through Satterfield’s blog, The Gentleman Racer, the event sold out and not only stimulated the local economy, but also brought drivers and spectators from as far as California and North Carolina. Participants were provided with tasty BBQ from WB Chuckwagon, plenty of Texas heat and sunshine, and most importantly, southern hospitality. “So many members of the community came forward to make this happen – from the volunteer fire department who made sure we had a safe event, to the city and county leaders who were instrumental in helping make this happen, to the Young Marines who came and directed traffic and parking, to the local businesses and vendors who went above beyond in helping us provide for our guests at the event,” Satterfield said. On Saturday morning, vehicles were subject to a safety inspection, and then drivers took advantage of practice sessions to familiarize themselves with the 1.5-mile racecourse, which followed Park Road 35 from just beyond the intersection with LCR 402, to the finish line near the gated entrance of Old Fort Parker. Scattered showers throughout the day didn’t scare or stop drivers from preparing for the official time trial runs that would determine winners the following day. “Today (Sunday) has definitely been the busier, more attended day, but we were pleasantly surprised to see how many people showed up yesterday to see the practice sessions, even with some rain,” event-planner Amanda Genduso said.

Cars were divided into two racing classes: Historic (pre1985 competition cars) and Exhibition (modern supercars and machines). On Sunday, each class had a morning slot and afternoon slot, with multiple chances to drive the course in hopes of achieving the fastest run. After both sessions of time trials, each driver’s fastest time was considered and the top three in each class were named the winners. Spectators looked on from a safe distance behind the wooden fence that surrounds the fort, but between course runs, VIP pass holders and media enjoyed a behind the scenes view of race cars in “the pit” on the far side of the fort. Driver James R. Smith from the Houston area was the unfortunate victim of the only wreck of the two-day event, and although he did not sustain any major injuries, his beloved Lotus

Super 7 took on severe damage and will need quite a bit of work before it is “road-ready” again. “So what happened is, he’s coming down the trail and there’s a hay bale, and in like 20 feet there’s another hay bale. When he came by here, the rear wheel hit the hay bale so it kicked him out, around, and he went backward into a tree,” motorsports director Richard Tomlin said. “The Mustang and one of the GTA cars hit a hay bale earlier, no issue, because they’re big heavy cars; this one is 1,200 pounds so it hits it, kicks it around and game over. Horrible day for him, but he’s OK and it could always be worse.” Aside from the official time trial races on Sunday, spectators had access to a myriad of restored classic cars on display inside the walls of the fort, including an operational 1924 Cadillac with the original engine and fully restored body parts and wheels.

Outside the fort, there were a few vendors set up, giving away promo items and selling merchandise. A raffle was also held to give away donated items such as a dashcam, sports watch, Bluetooth headphones, coffee table book about the history of racing, and more, with proceeds going to Drive Toward a Cure. “Putting on a first-year event and getting people to come out and trust us, it means so much to us and we’ve been getting so much positive feedback from the local community of how much it has meant to them to have people coming here, staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, and seeing how much this area has to offer,” Satterfield said at the award ceremony to close out the event. “All of you participants and spectators are important to us and we thank you.”
