There’s Something For Everyone

By Austin Lewter Few places in Texas harken the historic antebellum grandeur of the the Old South quite like Jefferson. It isn’t just anywhere one can stroll old brick streets lined with classic architecture and see first hand the remnants of a time when the river boat was the preferred means of transportation. Jefferson is nestled in the East Texas Piney Woods at the intersection of US Hwy. 59 and Texas Sate Hwy. 49. One of the oldest cities in the state, Jefferson’s original townsite was plotted in 1842 by a North Carolina immigrant, Allen Urquhart. He received a land grant on a bend

in the Big Cypress Bayou, and the town was named after Thomas Jefferson. Around the same time, a fellow Texas pioneer named Daniel Alley obtained a 586-acre partial adjacent to Urquhart and laid streets known as the Alley Edition. Jefferson was the western most port for riverboat traffic off the Red River, and the boats began arriving in late 1843. In those days, there was 100-mile long jam on the Red River just north of Shreveport, Louisiana. ...Continued From Page 5 that made it possible for a riverboat from New Orleans to travel north on the Mississippi River and enter the Red River at West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. From there, the trek up the Red River had ports at Alexandria, Natchitoges and Shreveport, Louisiana, before crossing Caddo Lake and entering the Big Cypress Bayou bound for Jefferson. Authors and historians alike therefore dubbed Jefferson the “Riverport to the Southwest.” The town charter was enacted in 1848, the same year the current newspaper, the Jefferson Jimplectue, began publishing.

The railroad came. As the did the Civil War. Jefferson persisted into reconstruction and replaced it’s entire business district in 1866 after it was wiped up by a fire. It was the first city in the state to use natural gas for lighting purposes and ice was first manufactured there for commercial use in 1868. Jefferson’s population of 4,180 on the 1870 census made it the sixth largest city in Texas. ...Continued From Page 7 of Mexico. More than 75,000 bails of cotton left Jefferson annually. River traffic was halted after the “Great Raft” was cleared in 1873. Nitroglycerin packs cleared the old river channel and greatly decreased the water levels on Caddo Lake. River traffic to Jefferson became almost impossible. Later attempts to increase water levels again were unfounded as, by then, the railroad had displaced river travel. In the year’s since, Jefferson has emerged as a hotbed of history and has become a destination for travelers, shoppers and history buffs. In 1971, an area of over 40 city-

blocks was added to the National Register of Historic Places. All totaled, there are over 60 historical markers in Jefferson and ten other structures have, on their own, been added to the National Register of Historic places. Jefferson remains largely unchanged since the antebellum and post antebellum periods that defined it. The downtown streets remain the original brick lining that, in a bygone era, supported equine traffic. On any given day, visitors can still hitch a ride on a horse drawn carriage. May is anchored by the Annual Historical Pilgrimage Tour hosted by the Jesse Allen Wise Garden Club. The first weekend in May also sets the stage for a annual re-enactment of the Diamond Bessie Murder Trial. The yearly drama depicts the true story of murder set amongst the backdrop of the East Texas Pines. June brings the Big Cypress Corvette Classic Car Show. Fourth of July is done right in Jefferson, with an old-time downtown community celebration compete with a big band, cake sale, duck race and fireworks on the the bayou.

October plays host to the Cypress River Airport Fly-in; the Runaway Fright Train; the Jefferson Burn Benefit; the Taste of Jefferson; and the East Texas Sounds International Country Music Awards. November kicks-off the Rail of Lights Christmas Train. The train continues into December along with the annual Candlelight Tour of Homes and the Rail of Lights New Year’s Train. By Austin Lewter Now in its 32nd year, Jefferson’s Mardi Gras Upriver has become a staple one of the most recognized Mardi Gras celebrations in East Texas. Presented by Jefferson’s Krewe of Hebe (KOH), this year’s celebration is set for Feb. 5-7, 2021, and is themed “Steam Punk Upriver.” Festivities will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 with Heather Linn and The Deacons on the Main Stage. Jefferson’s Opera House Theatre Players is planning their first fundraising event of the year, “Chocolate Sunday”, which will arrive on Sunday, February 14. It is also known as the “sweetest Sunday of the Year” by local area fans of the community theatre group now in the 32nd year of live theatre productions. According to OHTP president, Marcia Thomas, “we nearly always have this event near to Valentine’s Day.” Thomas says that anyone interested in participating should contact her at JeffersonTheatre@aol.com or call 903-926-2760 as soon as possi-

ble. Entry blanks to submit your chocolate creations, whether it be a cake, pie or a liquid form of chocolate, will be ready soon. The location for this year’s “Chocolate Sunday” has yet to be finalize. Tickets will go on sale in late January. with the public being admitted at 2 p.m. for a donation of $12 or more at the door. BCCC Jeep Show set for March 19-20 By Austin Lewter Jefferson is the type of place where a group of people with a common interests can find ways to use their hobby to benefit others. This is exactly the case with the Big Cypress Corvette Club (BCCC)— a group of car enthusiasts who have put their passion to work for a common good. An example of this good work will take place March 19-20, 2021, with the inaugural Big Cypress Jeep Show in downtown Jefferson. BCCC president Hollis Shadden claims corvettes is not all his club does. “We came together a few years ago and formed a board,” Shadden said. “We filed our 501c3 and set out to find ways to give back.” The end result has been hosting car shows and other automotive events— the

profits of which have gone to charity. “We aim to provide family-friendly events for automotive enthusiasts,” Shadden said. “Our mission is to promote tourism and support local charitable organizations.” Though their cornerstone event has become the Big Cypress Corvette Show, the BCCC decided to jump into the Jeep world. “Jeeps are popular,” Shadden said. “Jeep enthusiasts take pride in their Jeeps. They take care of them and like to show them off. We are happy to give them a venue to do just that.” The event will take will kick off March 19 with a light show on Friday night. “A lot of these Jeeps have tricked out lighting under their wheels and other places,” Shadden said. “We are going to line them down Austin Street that night

and judge who has the best lights.” According to Shadden, there are eight different classes in which the Jeeps will be judged and trophies will be awarded to winners on Saturday afternoon.

The club originally planned a show for last spring, but it was cancelled due to concerns surrounding COVID-19. “At that time, we had about 60 entrants,” Shadden said. “I think that’s a good sign. We should have that many or more this time. Car people are getting stir crazy. They want to get out and do things.” The entry fee for the Jeep show will be $25 with all the proceeds going to local charities. The BCCC has also partnered with the Krewe of Hebe and the Marion

County Chamber of Commerce to host automotive events. This includes several car shows, cruises and poker runs. “In 2019, we donated just shy of $9,000 to local charities,” Shadden said. “We made contributions to the backpack program, Women of Jefferson Scholarships, the Jefferson Fire Department and Combat Warriors— a veterans’ group based in Arkansas.” They have hosted car shows, Corvette shows, and have partnered with the Cypress River Airport to host the “Wings and Wheels Fly-in.” Their signature event— the Big Cypress Corvette Shows— has welcomed more than 85 Corvettes to Continued On Page 33

“We are going to use it parades and car shows and in other education settings where we can raise money and awareness about automotive history and culture,” Shadden said. He anticipates a repair bill of up to $5,000 to get the Ford running again. “I suspect most of that will come out of our pockets,” Shadden said referring to his board. Though the ongoing pandemic has slowed all events in Jefferson, the BCCC says they have plenty to do and are looking forward to getting the, near one-hundred year old, machine running again. The automotive relic was recently donated to the BCCC by the Mid American Flight Museum in Mount Pleasant. “It was a one-family vehicle owned that was donated to them sometime ago,” Shadden said. “They are an airplane museum so it’s a bit out of their wheelhouse. They put out feelers looking for a group who needed a project. We answered the call.” Shadden said the group plans to restore the car mechanically while leaving the rust on age viable on the exterior.

Brief History of Mardi Gras Mardi Gras ~ literal translation ~ Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday Sometime around the 2nd Century, Ancient Romans would observe what they called Lupercalia, a circus-type festival which was, in many respects, quite similar to present day Mardi Gras. This festival honored the Roman deity, Lupercus, a pastoral God associated with Faunus or the Satyr. When Christianity arrived in Rome, the dignitaries of the early Church decided it would be more prudent to incorporate certain aspects of such rituals into the new faith rather than attempt to abolish them altogether. This granted a Christian interpretation to the ancient custom and the Carnival became a time of abandon and merriment which precded the Lenten period. Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday falls between February 3rd and March 9th, based on the Lunar calendar that the Catholic Church uses to determine the date of Easter, and defines the Lenten season of penitance which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends Easter Sunday. When we fast forward to more modern times there is controversy as to when the first actual “Mardi Gras” took place in Southern Louisiana. Some

claim it was March 3, 1699, when French explorer, Sieur d’lberville, set up camp about 60 miles south of present day New Orleans and named the site Point du Mardi Gras in honor of the celebration being held on that day back in France. Others say it was in 1827 when a group of students, having just returned from a time schooling in Paris, donned costumes and masks, as they had seen in France, and paraded through the streets of New Orleans. The traditional and symbolic colors of Purple (Justice), Green (Faith), and Gold (Power) were chosen for the Krewe of Rex in New Orleans by none other than the Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff of Russia, on a visit to the City in 1872. Fast forward again and we’re in Jefferson in the mid-19th century. With direct ties to the New Orleans, a group of citizens organized and hosted the first Queen Mab Ball. This tradition continued until the population of Jefferson began to dwindle (around 1873). It was resurected in the mid-1980s and is one of the largest events in Jefferson today.
