GW band celebrates successes, By LANIE DAVIS

The George Washington High School (GW) band has been a staple at the school and the community as a whole since at least the 1960s. Whether it’s performing a halftime show at a football game or winning awards as a concert band, the band has continued in its success and excellence for many years. Under the direction of Cody Kesling, the George Washington High School band currently has the typical wind ensemble, symphonic and percussion class bands as well as jazz, marching indoor concert percussion and winterguard. Kesling, who is going into his third year as band director following longtime director Reginald Purvis, said the

band has always been very successful, dating back to the 1970s, which is the earliest he knows that the band was more than a stage band. Over the years, the band has traveled around the United States and Canada. In 1989, the GW band were national champions at the Fiestaval competition. The band has also taken part in several parades, including the Saint Patrick’s Day parade in Chicago in 2001 and the Novant Health Thanksgiving Day Parade in Charlotte in 2016, where they won an award. Recently, the band has been the recipient of some scholarship and grant money to assist with expenses, but also help individual students get instruments they need to be successful. In May, the Womack Foundation made a $50,000 donation to the GW band.

community support The Womack Foundation was established by Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Womack, Sr. to provide financial assistance to improve educational and recreational opportunities in Danville and Pittsylvania County, as well as Caswell County, North Carolina. The donation was made by Charles Womack and his mother, Bobbye Raye, in honor of the late Patrick Womack, Charles’ brother and Bobbye Raye’s son. Patrick Womack, a Danville native, GW graduate and a multi-talented musician, passed away from cancer last year. Kesling said this donation was be earmarked for the instruments the band needs most. With these funds, Kesling was able to purchase a full set of professional saxophones, open hold flutes, a full set of wooden clarinets, two horns and two euphoniums, as well as overhaul and

fix other instruments. “We have a growing band program here at George Washington High School, and this gift is specifically geared to making sure that our students have fantastic instruments to learn and play on,” Kesling said. According to Kesling, nearly every student in the band program uses a school-issued instrument. There are currently 117 students that participate in the many band programs GW has to offer. “It means a lot to me that the community is here to support the program, even in this time when my band room is silent, and it shouldn’t be,” Kesling said. “...This makes my heart explode with joy to know that our program is loved by the community.” In addition, the Womack family also donated funds from the Patrick Womack Music Scholarship Fund for

professional-grade instruments for deserving students this year. Tavon Tate received a new drum set after losing his in a house fire last year. Dakota McBride and Mason Diaz received an alto saxophone and a trumpet respectively to take to Radford University with them as they further their music careers. Daryl Brimmer, a sophomore, received a trombone to play in class for the next three years and beyond. With instruments such as these, Kesling said that the students would not need upgrades going forward, as they could easily join a professional orchestra with them. Even with new and refurbished instruments, Kesling’s ninth year of teaching will be unique for another reason, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Currently, he is giving mini-lessons to students virtually, as well as giving them guided activities every day. However, he isn’t letting the circumstances get him down. “I feel strong as a teacher,” he said. “I’m learning new stuff every day.” Along with his marching band staff, Kesling said their goal is to give every child the opportunity to succeed and perform.

Gretna-centered cycling route puts rural roads

A cycling route created by a Boone’s Mill man uses Gretna as the starting point for an over 150-mile-long bike ride along the county’s most beautiful rural roads, roughly half of which are gravel. Paul Workman, a biking enthusiast who lives in Boone’s Mill, said that while researching areas for gravel road bike-riding using Virginia Department of Transportation maps, he discovered that Pittsylvania County was a “hotbed” for gravel roads. “I realized that Pittsylvania County really is a hotbed for a lot of gravel roads,” Workman said. “I started piecing together some smaller rides, and really loved it. It was something quite unique. The rural roads are simply top notch.” This led to him creating the “Dirty Gretna” cycling route, which spans roughly 250 kilometers in a lemniscate-shaped pattern, beginning at the Railroad Park in Gretna and extending West out to the county line, turning around and passing back through Gretna, extending East to the other county line and finally returning to Gretna. Workman says the goal of creating the route was to maximize the amount of the route that goes over the many gravel roads in the county’s most rural areas. After some revisions, the current route is made up of as much as 55 percent gravel roads broken up into 40 sections.

According to Danville native Cary Wright, who himself has ridden part of the Dirty Gretna route, gravel biking has become a more popular fork of the cycling scene in recent years. It involves cyclists choosing to forego routes over paved roads or mountain biking trails in favor of a scenic ride through rural areas which provide a more natural feeling. “It’s something that’s totally different,” Wright said. “Road and mountain biking have been around in a long time. This is a new niche — people will look out in their community for gravel roads in rural areas.” Cyclists will use special bikes equipped with sturdier tires for the ride which Workman says lead to the ride not feeling much different than on a smooth road. Workman says the rural landscapes of northern Pittsylvania County are so beautiful and rich in a historic culture that he wishes more were aware of his route. “I think it will be good to make local people aware of what they have in their backyard,” Workman said. “It’s nice to still see a county that still has gravel roads. There’s just something about hearing the crunch underneath your tires and getting your legs dusty as you’re riding. It feels like you’re doing something peaceful.”

The route is publicly available on a user-created Google Maps page [which can be found at this URL: https://tinyurl.com/dirtygretna250k] which subdivides the route into several parts, numbers each of the gravel stretches and shows the locations of several rest stops along the way. Workman said the route is also connected to a cycling app called Strava, which tracks completion times from other Strava users who bike the course, and shows who has gotten the “Fastest Known Time.” With the route’s public availability, and the fact that cyclists equipped with the Strava app are able to track their own progress along it as they ride, anyone with a bike can hop onto the several parts of the track and ride whenever they like. As well, for the last three years, Workman said he has organized a “Grand Departure” from the route’s starting point in Gretna once a year, which Workman says are for those cyclists who prefer to ride in groups. Another departure event was scheduled in September. “Getting out in the country and just seeing the beautiful sites of Pittsylvania County, it’s a treasure,” Workman said.

Dustin Haberer has been working in restaurants since he was 13 years old, washing dishes. Throughout high school and college, he found himself in kitchens. He spent ten years rising the ranks until he became a corporate executive chef. Eventually, Haberer decided he wanted to work for himself and built his first food truck, Nana Karen’s, a name inspired by his mother. For the past three years, Nana Karen’s has been serving customers at events and venues around Danville and Pittsylvania County. “Business has been great,” Haberer said. “The exposure has bought so much business that I was having a hard time meeting demand.” However, for the past year, Haberer has been thinking about opening a restaurant, and after Main Street Coffee Emporium closed earlier this year, he, along with business partner Katie Inman, saw an opportunity to have a restaurant in downtown Danville. “I like to think that it was just God’s timing for us,” Haberer said. “...We saw on Facebook that this one was open, so we took a look. It needed a lot of work, but it’s exactly the set up and flow that I want.” The pair has been working on July 5 to transform the former coffee shop into Nana Karen’s on Main, giving the space a new, modern feel.

“We’ve put blood, sweat and tears into this place,” Inman said. “...We’ve painted every inch, the ceilings, the floors.” The restaurant’s menu will feature favorites from the Nana Karen’s food truck, which Haberer said includes some items that he created as a kid when he would make random dishes and write them down when they were actually good. In addition, their new menu items are inspired by their namesakes, including Papa Mike’s and Chase’s Place. With his menu items, Haberer said he tries to be creative with minimal ingredients on a budget. “That’s why even though our menus appear to be outside the box and gourmet, our prices aren’t,” Haberer said. Haberer also said he wants Nana Karen’s to complement, not compete with, other restaurants in the downtown with unique cuisine. Haberer and Inman are excited to bring something new to the downtown community they love. “Being a part of the energy and the newness of the exponential growth that this area is seeing is exciting,” Inman said. The two hope to have the restaurant opened by Oct. 1.

Tank museum d azzles with authentic flamethrower demonstration By JEREMY MOSER Star-Tribune Staff Writer

At the American Armored Foundation (AAF) Tank Museum on Route 29 Sept. 12, two men trained in the use of authentic military flamethrowers spat fire in front of a heated crowd. The demonstration involved the use of two restored flamethrowers, one commissioned for use in World War II and another commissioned to be used in the Vietnam War. “This is not Hollywood,” said museum founder and owner William Gasser as he talked up the crowd gathered in the lot behind the museum building. “This is a demonstration of one of the most horrible weapons in history. This is a weapon that was so ugly, it was tried to be outlawed.” Daniel Gasser, co-director of the museum with his wife, Natasha, said that the intention behind demonstrating such an “extreme” weapon is to show real war history and break the misunderstandings fiction has caused about flamethrowers by getting people to understand their real power. “There’s not a lot of places you get to see them,” Daniel said. “It’s a really extreme weapon. You want to see what people were up against, what people had to use. You can explain a rifle, you can explain a machine gun, but when you say flamethrowers, people don’t understand it.” One could gather that understanding from this demonstration. Standing in the “melt zone” in the safe spectator area only several yards away as two fire-breathing machines laid total waste to some safely flammable junk downrange, a heat could be felt that singed the edges of one’s arms and legs, leaving a sting that fades quickly from the body but not the mind.

Of the weapons of war found within the tank museum’s walls, none call for a more horrific death on the part of those who face its barrel. According to William, the flamethrower would find use starting in World War I to clear out trenches, but would continue to see use in wars up to the Vietnam War. “All living things run from fire, all living things may not run from anything else,” William said. “Famously is the Japanese soldier. They will not run from anything, except fire.” For the soldier in the Japanese Imperial Army hiding in a tunnel from American naval troops, William explained, nothing struck true life-or-death fear into his heart like a flaming torrent that would choke the life from his lungs before it burned his body in seconds. As Douglass Gasser, one of the trained flamethrower operators, explained, the mechanism of a flamethrower is relatively simple. Pressurized tanks on the wielder’s back contain a flammable liquid which is shot out of a handheld nozzle. At the end of the nozzle is a lighter which ignites the liquid as it is shot, creating a propelled stream of flame that reaches temperatures painful to feel from several yards away. “[Compared to a normal firearm] it’s a completely different animal,” Douglass said. “The feeling of it, it’s one of the gnarliest weapons you can fire.” The WWII unit, a piece of weaponry and engineering that’s now over 70-years-old, has a steel construction that weighs over 75 pounds.

William explained how his AAF Tank Museum was the first in the world to have operational military flamethrowers, and that they’ve been doing biannual demonstrations of their five units for the last 35 years without any incidents. “We do not risk our public, we do not risk ourselves or our equipment,” William said. “We will stop the show and not do it as opposed to risking you.”

former Java post office and country store a relic of Java’s past

“There’s a whole lot of history here,” Carl F. Adams said as he walked through the musty, run-down interior of his mother’s store building on Java Road, a building which was once a country store, post office and the beating heart of the Java community. Adams was happy to enter the building, which stands on the Eastern side of Route 640 at the intersection of Stone Road, upon request. For the last two decades, Adams said the building has been used by his family as a large storage building, but according to him, when it was in operation, it attended to every need a Java resident could have.

“In its heyday, they had parties up there, they had the store open ‘til late at night,” Adams said. “Nobody went nowhere. Now, we get in the car and go to Chatham like it’s nothing, but when I was coming up, it was a big deal to go to town.” The store would carry groceries like fresh meat and produce, but also hardware, some household appliances, tools and medicine. Combined with the post office which operated in a back room, and a one point a doctor’s office, the building brought everyone in the Java area to one spot. “The store was the lifeblood of Java,” said lifetime Java resident Jerry Moser, whose 600-acre farm operation sits less than a mile down the road from the old Adams’ store. “It was kind of a community center, it brought everybody there. It basically had everything we needed on a farm.” As Moser explained, the back room of the store was the

place to be on a weekend, or as he remembers, on occasions where harsh winter snows spilt feet of frost on the grass and roads. “In the wintertime, we’d get big snows. It would come up to a 2-or-3-foot big snow and would stay on the ground for weeks. Nobody was in school, so we’d go up there in the back room where they had a pool table,” Moser said. “They had a heater back there. We’d go back there and shoot pool, and all the old guys would play cards, play setback or rook. It was something to do.” Adams said his grandfather took over as postmaster in 1923, and it remained the job of his family for the next two generations, which would at some point later take over the store operation as well. According to Adams, the building was originally owned by John R. Yeatts, who owned many properties around Java in the late 19th century. It was in the 1970s

when the Adams family, at the behest of Adam’s mother, purchased the building as part of an estate auction. And yet, with the construction of a standalone post office building for Java in 1990, which sits just up the road from what was once B. D. Adams’ store, the Adams had to close. As Adams explained, it wasn’t just the new post office building that led to the store’s closure – it was a result of changing times. According to Adams, there was a time in Java when stores such as his were numerous along the stretch of Route 640 between the intersection with Halifax Road and the start of Riceville. “Around ‘90 to ‘95 there was a closing period,” Adams

said. “Around [then], most of those stores had closed, because most people would just ride to town and go to Food Lion or grocery stores in Chatham. We had to close the store, we couldn’t keep it open.” Twenty years after the store’s doors were closed for good, Adams walks through an epitaph. On that humid summer day, as Adams carefully stepped over areas where the floor’s foundation had fallen away, the air inside the building was thick with a miasma of dust and soil. Standing inside left a grimy film on the skin. The interior of the store contained many old things, a good portion of which was old stock from before the

shop closed. The time-weathered building presented itself as a capsule of the many eras it lived through in its previous lives. “See that chain right there in the ceiling?” Adams said as he pointed to the darkened rafters that made up the originally constructed part of the over century-and-a-half-old building. “There’s space up there where they would hide alcohol,” Adams said, referring to hide holes installed during the 1920s era of alcohol prohibition to hide alcohol from the law. In other parts of the store, shelves lining the wooden walls were stacked with forgotten amenities and bygone sundries. Wares that had sat unused for decades portrayed their use with frayed, discolored labels far removed from the cleaning chemicals and pharmaceuticals of today. Back in the main area, Adams reached down to a dusty drawer, shimmied it open and retrieved two worn books from their plastic coverings. One book suggests the building itself dates back to the nineteenth century, as some ledger entries appear to date back to the 1830s. A separate book contains post office records that portray a piece of local trivia, the fact that at one point, Java was known as “Lola, Virginia,” a change Adams said was done in 1905 as there was a conflict with another location in Virginia called Lola. “There’s a lot of history here,” Adams repeated. “It’s just used for storage now.”
