Welcome Although the early history of the community’s settlement varies depending on which account is read, all agree that Azle was named after Dr. James Azle Steward. An owner of much of the land where Azle now stands, Dr. Steward was a great benefactor of the community—donating land for schools, businesses, churches, and eventually enough land for a town site. Azle became an incorporated city in April of 1957 as a general-law community. In 1969, the population reached 5,000, allowing Azle to become a home-rule city. The current City Charter was adopted in 1971 and has been amended over the years to meet the changing needs of the city. Today Azle is a master-planned community with a council and boards dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of life in the city. Azle is a full-service municipality, committed to caring for the community and serving the residents.

Who We Are and What We Do The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization comprised of a voluntary membership of area businesses, professionals, and interested citizens all who have joined together to improve the economic and civic well-being of the city of Azle and the surrounding area. Our Chamber is financed through membership investments, fundraising, and support from our member businesses, professionals, and individuals who generously donate their time and services. Our membership is comprised of both small businesses and large corporate businesses as well as area churches, nonprofits, and individuals. All benefit equally as Chamber members. Members are encouraged to become involved in Chamber activities and serve on committees that address key objectives and goals of the organization. A Board of Directors is elected in accordance with our by-laws. The Chamber is led by an Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the organization.

History of Azle The area in and around Azle was initially settled by a group of pioneers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky. Records are unclear on when the first settlers arrived; however, we do know that Dr. J. G. Reynolds was one of Azle’s first settlers, arriving to the area in 1846. The community was first known as Elizabeth Town but was later changed to Mooresville after the owner of the only store in town. There was at that time no post office, and there were only 664 settlers in all of Tarrant County. The second half of the nineteenth century saw more settlers arrive and more homes built. In 1891, a man by the name of O’Bar came to the area and was instrumental in getting the first post office established in the community. The settlement’s name was soon after changed to O’Bar. Dr. James Azle Steward, one of the few doctors in the area, owned much of the land where Azle now is located. Dr. Steward was a generous benefactor in the community. He donated land for a variety of purposes that served the local settlers, including land for businesses, schools, and churches. Dr. Steward deeded enough land for a town site, and the name was changed from O’Bar to Azle. Interesting facts highlight Azle’s rich history. The first plank home in Azle was built of lumber hauled 280 miles from Houston in an ox-drawn wagon. Ash Creek Baptist Church, organized in 1872, was the first church established in Azle. It is said that one of the early ministers of the church preached with a six-shooter on each side of his Bible while the men in the congregation rested their rifles across their knees as a precaution against a surprise attack from the Comanche tribe, whose last raid in the area took place in 1873. While nearby Fort Worth grew in size and commerce, quickly becoming the largest stagecoach terminal in the southwest between 1856 and 1900, Azle’s population remained virtually static. For many years, Azle continued as a sleepy village, its population growing very slowly. While there have been periodic growth spurts, the population increase in Azle has typically been slow and steady over time. Azle became an incorporated city in April of 1971 as a general-law community. In 1969, the population of the city reached 5,000 and was then eligible to become a home-rule city, which allows the city to have more control over its own affairs. At that time, the Council-Manager form of government was adopted. The current City Charter was adopted in 1971 and has now been amended over the years to meet the changing needs of the city. Today Azle is a suburban community with a rural quality of life. Azle is just 15 miles northwest of Fort Worth, which provides the conveniences of a big city without losing the appeal of a small town. The city is 25 miles from Alliance Airport and 35 miles from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The city encompasses 8.8 square miles and has an estimated 12,952 residents.

Azle City Profile at A Glance Population Azle is located on State Highway 199, 15 miles northwest of downtown Fort Worth. It encompasses 8.8 square miles and falls within two counties, Tarrant and Parker. Azle has an estimated 12,952 residents within the city limits. Roughly 35,000 additional residents make the surrounding area their home, giving a population of approximately 48,000 for the Azle Independent School District. Our general trade area reaches slightly beyond our school district boundaries with close to 130,000 living close to conduct business and shop in the Azle. Health Care Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle is a 36-bed suburban hospital offering inpatient, outpatient, rehabilitation, radiology, and emergency services to northwest Tarrant County communities. The hospital is designated as both a Level IV Trauma Center and Level III Stroke Center. Texas Health Azle has advanced technology, including 3D mammography, MRI, EKG, and bone density testing. The hospital offers a full range of out-patient rehabilitation services including speech, physical, and occupational therapies. The hospital’s medical staff includes physicians specializing in areas such as Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Orthopedics. Surepoint Emergency Center is a 24/7 emergency center offering professional quality care. Surepoint’s team of doctors and ER staff is available to treat everything from minor injuries to major trauma situations. Surepoint Emergency Center and Surepoint Family Medicine serve Azle and the surrounding communities.

In northwest Fort Worth, just off Jacksboro Highway, between Lake Worth and Eagle Mountain Lake there lies an area of land untouched by Texas developers. Deer and buffalo roam the semi-open range, and wooden boardwalks take refuge seekers out into a swampy bayou-like marsh. Visitors can become one with nature as they enjoy the miles of trails throughout the refuge. Designed by Jeffery Brauer, Cross Timbers opened in 1995. Its Azle location is convenient to Fort Worth, Weatherford, Springtown, and Lake Worth. It has grown into a favorite for locals and visitors from all over the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The par-72, 18-hole tract winds its way through the hilly, wooded land next to Ash Creek in the

Cross Timbers area of North Texas. The design takes full advantage of this unique topography, with multiple elevation changes that create a true Hill Country feel. Always in excellent condition, the course features Champion Bermuda greens and offers a variety of challenges. With undulating fairways, natural hazards, strategic bunkering, and a variety of greenside collection areas, a round at Cross Timbers will engage and enthrall golfers of all skill levels! Cross Timbers is the home course for Robert Landers, an Azle farmer who gained fame and worldwide attention as a player on the PGA Champions Tour.

Calendar of Events Community There is always something to do in Azle. The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Azle, and many other organizations offer events for residents and visitors throughout the year. Listed below are some of the events that take place annually in Azle. We hope you will come out, get to know your neighbors, and enjoy the fun in Azle. Sting Fling Festival The annual Sting Fling Festival is an all-day event with crafts, food, entertainment, and information booths, as well as a parade, a color fun run, and activities for all ages. It is held the 2nd Saturday of September each year and is Azleâ€™s largest community event. Christmas Event The annual Christmas Event held the first Saturday in December includes a parade down Main Street and a kidsâ€™ celebration at 404 Main Place. Santa is on hand to hear Christmas wishes, and other fun activities take place during this cherished event. Annual Sporting Clay Shoot Since 2007, the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce has held a Sporting Clay Shoot in March. There are 100 challenging targets with lunch and lots of fantastic door prizes and raffles. More than 150 shooters come out for a great day of food, fun, camaraderie, and lots of prizes. The public is invited. This is quickly growing into a much-anticipated annual event! Annual Golf Tournament The annual Chamber Golf Tournament is held each year in May at the beautiful Cross Timbers Golf Course in Azle. Music in the Park/Movies in the Park The City of Azle offers free musical concerts to the community. Music in the Park concerts are held at the amphitheater in Central Park, 263 W Main ST, on Friday evenings beginning at 8:00 during May and June. These concerts are a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to gather and listen to a variety of music. Family-friendly movies are shown on selected Saturdays in the spring and fall. Follow the Flag Held at Central Park, 263 W Main ST, Follow the Flag is a community-wide event (organized by the Azle Area Ministerial Alliance) for all that offers food, fun, fireworks, and Christian and patriotic music! Bring your family and friends, your blankets and lawn chairs, and celebrate the Fourth of July in Azle!

Calendar of Events Azle Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet February 4, 2021 The Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet is hosted in January or February every year. This event satisfies our bylaws as an annual membership meeting for members of the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce. It is an event that recognizes our businesses and business leaders for their achievements and contributions to the community.

Clay Shoot March 26, 2021 The Annual Clay Shoot is held in March every year, usually at the Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds. It is a fun event for members, allowing them an opportunity to spend an afternoon networking and promoting their businesses. Golf Tournament May 7, 2021 The Annual Golf Tournament is held at Cross Timbers Golf Course in Azle with teams recruited from area businesses and organizations. The Chamber provides lunch, games, door prizes, as well as a round of golf for our members. It is a fun day spent networking while enjoying a beloved sport.

Sting Fling Festival September 11, 2021 The Azle Sting Fling Festival is held on the second Saturday in September. The festival provides the city and its surrounding communities with an all-day event featuring vendor booths, food, entertainment, a parade, a car show, and activities for children of all ages. Small Business Saturday November 27, 2021 This event is held on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving to support local businesses and promote shopping small during the holiday season. Christmas on Main Street December 4, 2021 Lighted Christmas Parade, Main Street Business Decoration Contest, and Childrenâ€™s Event Held on the first Saturday in December, the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce is in charge of the Lighted Christmas Parade and the Main Street Business Decoration Contest.
