HISTORY OF GOSHEN COUNTY
Goshen County is the GATEWAY TO THE WEST Traversed by the Oregon, Mormon, California, and Texas Trails, the Cheyenne to Deadwood Stage Route, the Pony Express and the overland telegraph lines of the 1800’s. The North Platte Valley is a most historic section of the Western United States. Using the North Platte River as their guide, the first of the emigrants from the East crossed into the present state of Wyoming in 1843. They camped along the North Platte in southeastern Wyoming in what is now Goshen County. For two decades, the county served as the GATEWAY TO THE WEST for approximately 350,000 pioneers following the trails to the west. The pioneer trails sliced diagonally through the county producing some of the most historic sites in Wyoming. Fort Laramie was one of the most important military posts between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Coast. The Fort provided a source of necessary provisions for the

emigrants and served to protect the travelers along the trails from the Indians. The valley has been agriculturally oriented for centuries, because it escapes many of the severe winter storms. Indian tribes lived in the valley, growing crops along the North Platte River and hunting on the uplands. They were driven out by nomadic tribes and eventually trappers and traders occupied the valley. Present residents still enjoy pleasant, mild winter, low humidity, clear skies and fresh water. In 1890, the same year as Wyoming’s statehood, the Burlington Railroad stretched into the North Platte Valley with the first passenger train arriving in the spring of that year. In the 1920’s, the Union Pacific Railroad expanded into Goshen County. Records show a considerable amount of prospecting for precious metals in the early days. The principal industry was and is agriculture. The hardy settlers built the canal north of Torrington in 1883 to divert water from the North Platte River to irrigate their crops. Further construction of canals occurred in 1886 and 1892. These canals became the lifeblood of the valley allowing farming to become a big business. Over 200,000 cattle are raised and marketed in Goshen County. Potatoes, dry edible beans, corn, small grains, alfalfa and sugar beets are among the crops produced. Fort Laramie National Historic Site is a favorite of visitors to the county. The living history program offers a glimpse into the past. The Fort was established in the confluence of the Laramie and North Platte Rivers and accounts for much of the early history of the area. The Homesteaders Museum, located at the south edge of Torrington, chronicles the early settler era of the county. Artifacts from the early archeological times can be found at the Western History Center west of Lingle.

PLACES TO GO IN GOSHEN COUNTY 1. Homesteaders Museum, Torrington - Located in the old Union Pacific Depot, and dedicated to the early settlers in the area, it has a real homesteader's shack, a sheep herder's wagon and contains displays of clothing, furnishings and other phases of the homesteader's life. Also located on the grounds are a Union Pacific Caboose and an Indian tepee. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Plan on at least an hour, but stay as long as you want.

2. Torrington's Self-guided Walking Tour - Enjoy the friendly folks and quiet, small town community as you find examples of the town's early architectural history. Just half an hour, through and close to the downtown area, is enough to stretch your legs and conjure up those bygone days.

3. Western History Center, 5 miles west of Lingle - Open year round, visitors will find archaeological research under way and displays of historic and pre-historic interest, and mineral exhibits, as well as a library and a wealth of printed materials. The center also offers guided tours of the area. Nominal fees and donations are welcome.
5. Oregon Trail - There are several ways to enjoy this part of our history. A trip between Torrington and Lingle on Hwy. 156 and from Lingle west on Hwy. 157, follows the original route of the Oregon Trail. Along the way there are trail monuments and a marker for the Grattan Massacre. Get a map and scout the way yourself. This trip could end in Lingle, Fort Laramie or at the Fort Laramie National Historic Site, depending on the amount of time available and your interests. At least an hour.

4. Fort Laramie National Historic Site - The West's finest reminder of Frontier life in the 1800s. Refurbished buildings, museum and several interpretive areas. The best kept fort and the most complete Western history bookstore West of the Mississippi. Nothing less than an hour will do, and a full day is even better. The federal gate fees apply on entry. Private tours available. Open year round, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

8. Jay Em Historic District - Located about midway between Torrington and Lusk on Hwy. 85. Tours are by arrangement, or you may stop on your way through just to look at the interesting buildings. The small settlement is on the National Register of Historic Places.

9. Monuments Tour - One hour to half a day will allow you to visit the numerous monuments located near Torrington. East on Hwy. 26 is the Stuart Campsite Marker to Robert Stuart's returning Astorians who wintered near here. South on Hwy. 85 is the Cold Springs Monument where pioneers camped. West on Hwy. 85 is the Texas Trail Monument. South of Lingle on Hwy. 157 is the Grattan battle monument. Near the Wyoming/Nebraska state line on Hwy. 26 is an Oregon Trail monument.
10. Hell Gap Tour - By arrangement, you may visit one of the most important archaeological sites in North America. Man has occupied the area for at least 11,000 years, and research is continuing. The trip, which can be tailored to your time and interest, will take at least half a day, and preferably the entire day.
11. Water trip - For the water lovers, Hawk Springs Reservoir, 30 miles south of Torrington on Hwy. 85 offers an opportunity for fishing, water skiing and boating.
12. Oregon Trail Ruts and Register Cliff - Located two miles south of Guernsey, WY, the historic names carved in the sandstone cliff and the impressive ruts cut into the lime stone outcroppings, give mute evidence of the passing of the emigrants. Follow the Oregon Trail route on Hwy. 156-157 part of the way, or travel the full distance on Hwy. 26. Take half a day or a whole day, depending on your interests.

6. Mormon Trail - The Mormon Trail followed the north bank of the North Platte River until it reached Fort Laramie. At that point, the handcarts generally remained on that side of the river, while the covered wagons crossed over for easier travel. Emigrant Hill northwest of Hartville and a nearby grave are reminders of the grueling conditions the pioneers traveled under.At least an hour. 7. The Iron Bridge: The Iron Bridge which crosses the Platte River at Fort Laramie was the first of its kind west of the Missouri, was built in 1875.

GOSHEN COUNTY, WYOMING: PLACES TO SEE Torrington
Torrington was given its name by an early settler, William G. Curtis, after his hometown of Torrington, Conn. Today, Torrington is a thriving community where you can enjoy a number of recreational activities. The Town of Torrington is the center of the region’s commercial activity. Within this agricultural community there are several fertilizer plants, a sugar factory, tourist facilities and retail businesses serving the local and rural populations. When entering from the south, watch for the Torrington Depot, now a National Historic Place and home of the Homesteaders Museum. The building is a fine example of Union Pacific depot construction in the early 20th century. Here visitors have the opportunity to take an intimate look at the development of eastern Wyoming as a primary agricultural area along the famous Oregon and Mormon Trails. Between Torrington and Guernsey, travelers will follow the historic Oregon and Mormon Trails as they make their way along the North Platte River.
Lingle
Lingle located at the junction of U.S. 85 and 26 is within two miles of the Grattan Massacre Site (1854). This site marks one of the earliest conflicts between the U.S. Soldiers and Native Americans. Lingle is also the home of the Western History Center located 5 miles west of town. The WHC is an educational and research facility displaying artifacts from prehistoric sites through photos, fossils, lithic and faunal materials, exhibits, tours and discussions with Center personnel.
Fort Laramie National Historical Site
Fort Laramie, the first garrisoned post in Wyoming, is located adjacent to the town of Fort Laramie, 23 miles west of Torrington at the confluence of the North Platte and the Laramie Rivers. It was the most important outpost on the major emigrant trails, the Oregon, Mormon and Pony Express. Fort Laramie had its beginning in June 1834 when fourteen Rocky Mountain Fur Company men built a
small stockade post. During its heyday the Fort became a haven for gold seekers and wary emigrants, a station fro the Pony Express and the Overland Stage, and served as an important military post in conquest of the Plains Indians. There are 22 original structures, many of which have been restored and are available for the visitor’s enjoyment. Also located on the grounds are a visitor’s center and bookstore.
Jay Em
Jay Em named from the Texas Trail driver James Moore, is located along Rawhide Creek in northern Goshen County. In the early and mid 1900’s Jay Em was a vital economic community. Today, the small community is designated a National Historic District. Tours are given by appointment during the summer.
Yoder
The town of Yoder is just west of U.S. 85 on the road to Cheyenne. The town is only a few miles from Springer Reservoir where you can enjoy fishing, boating, water skiing or a leisurely afternoon taking photographs.
LaGrange
The town of LaGrange, the oldest incorporated town in Goshen County (1889) is a farming and ranching community. The park with picnic area, tennis courts, and rodeo grounds entices visitors to stop and enjoy the small community’s hospitality.
Veteran
Veterans of WWI founded this small community. The community is centrally located for water recreation.
Hawk Springs
This community was named for a gentleman named “Hawk” who lived next to the local springs and operated a stagecoach station in early 1900’s. Hawk Springs’ recreation area is five miles southeast of the community, nestled between 66 Mountain and Bear Mountain. Here one can enjoy boating, water skiing, fishing, and plenty of photo opportunities.
