aylor County is the heart of Kentucky. Not only is our fine county situated in the middle of the state, but it is also shaped like a heart! You may be considering a visit, and we are sure you will find that there is much to love about Taylor County. If you intend to move here for work or retirement, though, why not contact the Campbellsville/ Taylor County Chamber of Commerce for information? We have been serving Taylor County for over 70 years, and we would love to share with you why we love this county. Yes, we are biased, but once you visit, we know you will see why! At the Chamber of Commerce, we strive to offer quality support and meet the needs of our members. The Chamber acts as a unified voice for our business community, and our goal is to promote the standing of Taylor County as a whole. Our mission is to work together to energetically build and sustain a better community in which to live and conduct business. At our many networking functions throughout the year, we create opportunities for people to learn about our community and connect. We host training events, monthly luncheons and special programs to keep our community up to date on promotions and events hosted by our members. We tap into several of our friends’ creative minds to bring our members and the people of our community a multitude of opportunities. Support of local businesses has never been greater amid COVID-19 pandemic Taylor County saw a unique year in 2020 and the impact of a new normal will have lasting effects. Progress through times of uncertainty is a complicated process. Many of us have felt the economic impact of COVID-19 and feel the stress. The support of local businesses has never been greater. A testament to the strength of Campbellsville and Taylor County is in how well we came together as a community to support local businesses. Citizens of this amazing small town joined together, and we lifted up our neighbors and supported them by participating in their curbside, delivery and carry-out options. We respected the rules that local businesses put into place in order to carefully follow state and local health guidelines. They care for their customers and their customers cared for them. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Our efforts remind us that we must stay strong and continue to help those who need us as we move into 2021. The Campbellsville/Taylor County Chamber of Commerce is here to help. aylor County might be considered a rural area, but the county and its one incorporated city have plenty to offer. Campbellsville and Taylor County are great places to work, live and raise a family. Nestled in the heart of Kentucky, the area features numerous landmarks that attract people from all over. Green River Lake brings more than 1 million annual visitors, and Campbellsville University has an international student population, which makes for a diverse and well-rounded community. Taylor County covers 270 square miles and has a population of about 25,000 residents. In addition to new restaurants and businesses, Taylor County offers its residents and visitors multiple opportunities for a little rest and relaxation. Miller Park is home to a swimming pool, tennis courts, horseshoes, Little League baseball fields, a par-3 golf course, girls’ softball fields, pickleball courts, bicycle paths and walking tracks. The community has hosted several district and state Little League tournaments. Tourists from across the state can enjoy the abundant amenities available at Green River Lake and its state park. In addition to beaches, marinas and campgrounds, Green River is one of the most biologically diverse rivers in the world. The county is rich in history, and the Taylor Regional Archive Center is dedicated to preserving that history, as well as helping anyone with local ties who is researching family’s history. Also located at that address is The Hiestand House-Taylor County Museum, an 1813 German stone house containing Taylor County history and antiques. It was one of many homes raided by Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan during the Civil War. The museum features exquisite hand-tooled masonry work rarely equaled in 18th or 19th century American architecture. One of 12 German stone houses in Kentucky, the Jacob Hiestand House is a significant example of a federal style house. It is surrounded by beautiful
gardens, servant quarters and a spring house. Taylor County is also home to the historical Tebbs Bend Battlefield, where Gen. Morgan waged one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Taylor County has numerous churches of all congregations. Campbellsville Baptist Church, founded in 1791, is the oldest in the county. The Baptists influenced the future of Taylor County and its eventual county seat of Campbellsville. This influence was also felt with the founding of Russell Creek Academy, also known as Campbellsville Junior College, Campbellsville College and now Campbellsville University, which boasts record-breaking enrollment each year. Founded in 1906, CU is a widely acclaimed Kentucky-based Christian university with more than 14,000 students offering more than 100 programs of study, including Ph.D., master, baccalaureate, associate, pre-professional and certification programs. For those with younger children, Taylor County residents have a wide range of choices when it comes to education. There are two public school systems, with Taylor County Schools serving the county school district and Campbellsville Independent Schools, which serves the city school district. There are also private schools like Kentucky Christian Academy, as well as an organization that offers support to parents who would rather homeschool their children. Via nearby parkways and interstates, Campbellsville is a 90-minute drive from Lexington, Bowling Green and Louisville. Taylor County’s Heartland Commerce and Technology Park is marketable to any new business recruitment or existing business expansions. Taylor County is home to a detention center that opened in November 2008. A new, state-funded judicial center opened in November 2009. These days, there is plenty of activity in downtown Campbellsville. Several businesses have either opened or relocated downtown. Some property owners have taken advantage of Renaissance façade grants. The state grants, which business owners matched, provided for new paint, windows and awnings, allowing several businesses to receive facelifts. And the city has built a park on Main Street, complete with flowers, a fountain and a sitting area. The site has also been the setting of a few weddings. After shopping and eating downtown, visitors can stop at the Courthouse Square and admire the Civil War mural, which features several local faces. In addition to the mural, the project included a new handicapped-accessible walkway, a stage, lighting and moving the veterans’ memorial from its spot facing

South Columbia Avenue to a new spot facing First Street. Taylor Regional Hospital serves the medical needs of the community, while response for emergencies comes from Campbellsville/Taylor County Emergency Medical Services, Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, Campbellsville Police Department and Campbellsville and Taylor County Fire & Rescue. Among the more famous who have called Taylor County home are Janice Holt Giles, who was an author of several novels’ Aaron Harding, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1861 to 1867; Clem Haskins, a professional basketball player and coach; John “J.B.” Holmes, a professional golfer; Margaret Buckner Young, an author of children’s books; and Jefra Bland, who was a contestant on the reality show “Survivor” and was crowned Miss Kentucky Teen USA in 2009. Besides Bland, other Taylor Countians have also represented Kentucky at several state pageants. Campbellsville native Emily Cox won the Miss Kentucky crown in 2008. Her aunt, Nancy Cox Kenny, won the Miss Kentucky crown in 1990. Nanci Bowling won the title in 1962, Laura Sue Humphress won in 1994 and Veronica Duka received the crown in 1996. In 2015, Kassie Miller was crowned the first Kentucky Distinguished Young Woman in the county’s history and was second runner-up in the national competition.
Taylor County Fiscal Court
Taylor County is governed by six magistrates and a judge-executive. The highest-ranking county official is Judge-Executive Barry Smith. A Fiscal Court, made up of six elected magistrates to represent the six districts in Taylor County, is the county’s decision-making body. The judge-executive presides over court meetings. Fiscal Court meets at 5 p.m. the second Tuesday of each

month at the Taylor County Courthouse. The meetings are open to the public. County Attorney John Bertram advises the court on legal matters. • James Jones is magistrate in the 1st District. The 1st District contains the Oak Hill-Poplar Grove, Saloma/Willowtown and New North precincts. • John D. Gaines is magistrate in the 2nd District. The 2nd District contains the Spurlington, East, New East and New City East precincts. • Tommy Corbin is the magistrate in the 3rd District. The 3rd District contains Acton, Speck, Mannsville/Merrimac and Old South. • Zuel Yarberry is magistrate in the 4th District. The 4th District contains Elk Horn-Yuma, Ireland/Irene-Romine and New South. • Derrick Bright is magistrate in the 5th District. The 5th District contains the New West, New City West and Old West precincts. • Richard Phillips is magistrate in the 6th District. The 6th District contains Pleasant Hill, Old North and New City North.
City Council
Campbellsville is a third-class city governed by Mayor Brenda Allen, a full-time mayor, and 12 city council members. The city council makes decisions about the city’s budget, streets, policies and procedures. City Attorney John Miller advises the council on legal matters. Council members are Ronnie Dooley, James Ewing, Diane Ford-Benningfield, Dan Hayes, Randall Herron, Sharon Hoskins-Sanders, Faye Howell, Allen Johnson, Stan McKinney, Donnie Munford, Dave Nunery and Greg Rice. The city council meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Campbellsville Civic Center. Meetings are open to the public.

The Taylor County School District provides education for children in preschool through 12th grade. Charles Higdon Jr. is superintendent. Campbellsville Independent Schools
Campbellsville Independent Schools has a preschool, elementary, middle and high school, in addition to alternative education and adult literacy centers. The school system underwent a reconfiguration for the 20132014 school year to maximize its space and personnel and recently completed a renovation at its elementary campus. A renovation at the middle school campus is in the planning stages.

Renovations at CES included the addition of four new classrooms, a new HVAC unit, a fire suppression system, interior finishes, new kitchen and cafeteria, new restrooms, renovation of existing classrooms, a new playground for preschool students and work to administrative suites, parking areas and the front façade. Plans are still in the works for construction at CMS. Kirby Smith is the superintendent at Campbellsville Independent Schools. The Eagle Center of Innovation, also known as iEagle, opened in August 2019. The center offers hands-on, authentic learning for students in fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh grades. Current enrollment is about 100. At the iEagle campus, students participate in project-based learning and STEAM projects, learn about engineering, robotics and technology, perform community service and much more. iEagle is located on the Campbellsville Middle School campus. Teachers are Tracey Rinehart, Hannah Jones, Katie Campbell and Tyler Hardy. Campbellsville High School, also located at 230 W. Main St., is for students in grades nine through 12. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Weston Jones is principal. Current enrollment is about 320. CHS is one of the first Big Picture Learning high schools in Kentucky. In the program, students who apply to participate and are accepted can choose to attend school on three days per week and work at internships for the other two days. Students can also work at internships for a few hours each day. With the addition of the Big Picture Learning program, there are now four learning pathways available for CHS students, including the Big Picture Learning full and hybrid programs and college and career preparatory pathways. FRC and YSC provide activities and programs for families and students in the District, including parenting skills training, support groups, the school nurse program, Red Ribbon Week activities, school supplies, clothes, homework help and tutoring and violence prevention. Main St., is also part of the Campbellsville Independent School System. The program is designed as an option for students who thrive in a non-traditional classroom setting. Kentucky Christian Academy
For parents who want to provide their children with Christian school education, Kentucky Christian Academy offers a biblically integrated curriculum to students in preschool through high school. The school is located at 2046 Old Columbia Road and uses the MAP testing program to individualize instruction and create learning goals for each student. hysicians at Taylor Regional Hospital, the only hospital in the community, provide care for Campbellsville and Taylor County residents. Located at 1700 Old Lebanon Road, TRH offers many health care services, including cardiac catheterization, cardiac rehab, 24-hour physician-staffed emergency services, diabetes treatment, obstetrics, orthopedics, pediatrics, podiatry, sleep studies, diagnostic radiology, in-house MRI, wound care, a walk-in clinic, cancer treatment center, neurology, surgical services and an outpatient pharmacy. In August 2019, TRH acquired the daVinci robotic surgical system to provide minimally-invasive robot-assisted surgery. Jane Wheatley is the TRH CEO and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. TRH has one of the area’s only vein centers, with services provided by Dr. James Watkins. The Wound Healing Center is located inside the hospital. TRH is county-owned, meaning it functions as a public hospital rather than a private one. Patients receive treatment regardless of their ability to pay. Taylor County residents pay a hospital property tax, which accounts for about 1.5 percent of its operating budget. The majority of its revenue comes from outpatient services. TRH is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The Radiology Depart-

ment offers imaging modalities in ultrasound, nuclear medicine, 3D mammography, MRI, CT, cardiac catheterization and diagnostic radiology. Mammography includes stereotactic breast biopsy procedures and is accredited by the American College of Radiology and the FDA. MRI, CT and nuclear medicine are accredited by the American College of Radiology as well. Board certified radiologists interpret the procedures and work directly with radiologic technologists to ensure quality patient care. In 2017, TRH expanded its diagnostic imaging services with the $620,000 purchase and installation of the new Hologic Selenia Dimensions 3D mammo system. The Genius TM 3D mammography exam allows doctors to examine breast tissue layer by layer, instead of viewing all the complexities of breast tissue in a flat image, as with conventional 2D mammography. Fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below. The TRH Sleep Clinic is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The cancer program at TRH is certified by the American College of Surgeons and has one of the longest running accreditations in the country. TRH expanded with the addition of a new rehab services building which houses not only therapy services, but also the Taylor Regional Orthopedic Group. Taylor Regional Rehab Services held its grand opening in January 2018 and also features aquatic therapy for rehab patients. Located in Columbia, Kentucky, the Taylor Regional Hospital Specialty Physicians and Diagnostic Imaging Center opened in July of 2018. The center provides on-site laboratory, CT and diagnostic radiology services and is also home to TRH specialty providers in the fields of orthopedics, podiatry,

aylor County Public Library seeks to strengthen the community by providing resources, knowledge and inspiration. This mission drives the library to design programs and purchase materials that meet the needs of the community. Library Director Tammy Snyder welcomes community involvement, encouraging members of the community to become members of the Friends of the Library and attend monthly board meetings. Located at 1316 East Broadway Street, TCPL houses more than 34,000 items that can be checked out to the community. These items include books, magazines, audio books, Kindles, projectors, and a community favorite, DVDs. Along with the items located in the library for circulation, TCPL cardholders also have access to more than 150,000 eBooks via Overdrive, an online collection of reading and audio materials. This year the library has added a Seed Catalog for patrons to check out 10 packets of a variety of seeds and herbs. In addition, the library offers curbside service for patrons who reserve items over the phone or online. Simply pulled into a numbered parking spot and give us a call. The library staff will deliver your requested items to your car! Library cards are free to members of the community and give each library cardholder access to all of these resources. To obtain a library card, members of the community simply need to supply a photo ID and proof of address. Books can be checked out for two weeks at a time and DVDs for one week. Those who visit TCPL have access to 24 community computers, as well as five laptops with Internet access. TCPL also provides high-speed wireless Internet for users that prefer to bring their own device. A library card also gives patrons free use of digital resources such as Universal Class, an online program that will allow patrons to take continuing education classes online. There are more than 500 courses to choose from in the online database. Other resources include Knowledge City, a job skills training site; Scholastic Science Flix and Teachables; and Creative Bug. TCPL offers a variety of general services the community regularly seeks. These services include sending faxes, making copies (color and black and white), laminating and notarizing.

For children, there are weekly story hour programs, which encourage literacy, creativity and exploration. Rhyme Time, a program for babies to age 2, is on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. Pre-K Story Hour, for 3 and 4 year olds, is on Fridays at 9:30 a.m. Kimberly Burton is the Children Services Librarian and her email is kimberlyburton@tcplibrary.org. Rebecca Hurtgen is the Adult Services Librarian, offering a wide range of programming and events by partnering with local businesses and organizations to broaden access and opportunities to all populations. YA includes students between ages 12-18 with a variety of programs. While many community events and celebrations were canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many are hoping to return in 2021 once public health experts deem it safe once again for large gatherings.
Campbellsville Folk Fest
Campbellsville Folk Fest has ballooned since its humble beginnings, growing from just 300 attendees to become one of central Kentucky’s largest musical celebrations with well over a thousand people in attendance for the third annual show in 2019, even as it changed from being free to a ticketed event. Grammy Award winner John Paul White headlined the show in 2018, and in 2019, the headliner was Hush Kids, an up-and-coming indie folk duo. Besides the headliners, Campbellsville Folk Fest offers a bevy of smaller acts, an activity area for children and a varied selection of local food and drink vendors. Greater Campbellsville United hosts an annual diversity festival each January. Events vary from year to year, but in the past, the festivities have included a caricature artist, international dancers, various musical performances, art displays, a Kwanzaa celebration, food and more. Promoting diversity through various activities and events allows GCU to create an environment of equality for all. GCU is a nonprofit organization formed in 2002 and is a coalition of people, representing organizations, churches, Campbellsville University and individuals whose purpose is to educate the community. Homeplace on Green River
The Homeplace on Green River, located at 5807 New Columbia Road in Campbellsville, is a historic 227-acre farm jointly managed by Adair, Green and Taylor counties. The original farmhouse was built in 1803 by Isaac Tate, whose family owned the farm for three generations before selling it to

the Buchanans in 1906. They expanded the farm’s operations to include fruits, vegetables, feed crops and dairy cattle before selling the farm to the Hall brothers in 1954, who developed a successful cattle business. The Hall family sold the farm in 2001, and the three counties purchased it using federal grant money earmarked for the preservation of agricultural land. Dubbed “Kentucky’s Outdoor Classroom” by the Kentucky State Senate in March 2016, the grounds are used throughout the year by local schools and colleges for educational purposes. Beyond that, though, the Homeplace is also the site of two seasonal festivals and multiple theatre productions each year. The annual spring festival, better known as ‘Plow Day,’ was set to celebrate its 10th consecutive year in 2020 but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event offers up a bit of agricultural history with horse and mule plow teams, historical reenactors, blacksmithing demos and butter making, as well as an array of local artists and crafters and other fun activities for families to enjoy. The Heritage Festival is held in the fall, usually in early September, and gives attendees a chance to watch and take part in various agricultural demonstrations, shop the wares of local artists and crafters, listen to live music and more. entucky basketball, horse racing and southern hospitality are just a few attractions that bring people to the Bluegrass State. According to the Kentucky Tourism website, Kentucky has more miles of running water than any other state except Alaska. The numerous rivers and water impoundments provide 1,100 commercially navigable miles. Taylor County and Campbellsville have the privilege of being home to Green River Lake. The lake itself has 8,210 acres of water, along with 12 miles of the Green River running through the county. “It is the longest river in Kentucky and the most navigable,” Taylor County Tourist Commission Executive Director Alisha Curry said. Green River Lake is formed by the Green River, which starts in Lincoln County. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of a dam on Green River in April 1964 to control flooding and completed the project in June 1969. The dam is 141 feet high and 2,350 feet long. The 8,200-acre Green River Lake has a 147-mile shoreline and covers parts of Adair, Casey and Taylor counties. With 44 different lakes in the state, each has a different atmosphere. “When people think of the lakes they each have a different mindset,” Curry said. “Different things attract different audiences to the lake.” Curry said she feels the lake is more family-friendly and active with the senior community. “One thing about Green River Lake is that it is in a more natural setting than most other lakes,” added Larry Lemmon, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lead ranger. The fact there is no shoreline development is one of the best features of the lake, in his opinion. “The only docks on our lakes are public,” he said. “There are very few places that you can see a house or development on the water. So when you’re on the water, you’re in nature.” While the lake is set out in Taylor County, Curry said there is still shopping and dining within 10 minutes of the lake. “Which is something that isn’t offered at other lakes,” she said. “That reason alone is why a lot of people come here.” Locals call Green River Lake a hidden secret for Taylor County. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates more than 1.4 million people visit the lake annually. With more than 8,200 acres of water that allows for people to fish, boat, swim and any type of water activity, Green River Lake is great for recreational activities. “There are backwater areas that are good for kayaking and canoeing,” Lemmon said. “We have a lot of folks that come in and ask about that these days.” Through the two marinas and individual businesses, there is the ability to rent kayaks, canoes, fishing boats, pontoons, tubes, paddleboards and jet skis. There are also 11 camping locations, Curry added, with more than 650 campsites surrounding the lake, with 250 of those being right on the lakeshore. Those interested in camping can reach the Green River Lake Visitor Center at 270-465-4463 for more information. Green River Marina also offers a different lodging experience. “The floating cabins!” Curry said. “They are a huge draw. Just something unique and something people want to do.” There are eight rentable, fully furnished 2-3 bedroom floating cabins, with each cabin having its own boat slip, as well. Fishermen from all over visit Green River Lake. “We have great fishing opportunities,” Curry said. “We get

It is not uncommon for them to go out and get their own fishing cove.” Both the avid angler and the beginning caster have the chance to fish for bluegill, crappie, muskie, walleye, white largemouth, smallmouth and Kentucky spotted bass. The past few years on Green River Lake have been the best ever for crappie or bass fishing, but it is also one of only three lakes in Kentucky that stocks muskie. “Muskie is a big draw for us because it is more of a northern fish,” Curry said. “Up north, their lakes shut down. The good thing about Kentucky is we can fish all year round.” The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife puts in stake beds and sinks trees to enhance the fishing. “We also have fishing piers on the lake,” Lemmon said, adding that there are handicap-accessible fishing piers. The Big Cat Pay Lake and Spurlington Lake are two other popular fishing locations in town, as well as Campbellsville City Lake. “A lot of our community think that if they don’t have a boat then they can’t go to the lake,” Curry said. “But that isn’t the case, with beaches at Holmes Bend Marina, Green River Lake, Smith Ridge and Pikes Ridge offering ample beach day opportunities. “A lot will come just for our beaches,” she added. “They are free. You can have a good day by bringing your cooler and laying out. It doesn’t cost anything.” There are also grills and shaded areas at each of the beaches. For those not interested in water activities, the lake also offers hunting recreation. “There’s hunting that takes place during the winter, with waterfowl hunting, and people also use the lake to access other hunting areas on the wildlife management area,” Lemmon said. The Green River Wildlife Management area contains 21,037 acres of forestry. Hunters are able to pursue white-tailed deer, waterfowl, quail, rabbits, wild turkey, woodcock, ducks and squirrels. There are also more than 30 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails along the lake that offer beautiful views of the region. The lake and its different features have the ability to bring people together, to mesh rivalries and county lines together. “When people come to the lake, they don’t care what county they are in,” Lemmon said. “They look at the whole lake.”

‘Fifty years later and still kicking’ S
teve McCarty still remembers the day his father came home with life-changing news. Charles McCarty was a manager at Jerry’s Restaurant back then, and one day while at work, investors with Burger Queen Enterprises approached him about becoming a partner in their venture and running his own restaurant. Steve was only 8 years old at the time, but as he recalled, the investors hadn’t known his father before then. They had just witnessed his work ethic at Jerry’s, and that was enough. His father accepted the proposal, and set the family on a path they would continue to walk half a century later. “That’s what dad did,” said Steve, who has since taken over his father’s restaurant — now called Druther’s — alongside his sister, Kathy Clark. “All he ever knew was working in a restaurant. It was really a blessing.”
‘Big things are cooking at Burger Queen’
The family lived in Louisville at the time but moved to Campbellsville for this new chapter in their lives. The restaurant building was constructed where it still stands today at 101 North Columbia Avenue, officially opening on Sept. 4, 1970. In what would prove to be a savvy decision in the future, Charles and his wife, Joanna, started the Burger Queen in Campbellsville as independently owned rather than company owned. By the ’80s, they were even able to buy out their partners to become the sole owners. By 1981, Burger Queen changed its name to reflect the wider variety of options it now offered. In addition to burgers, McCarty said the restaurant had become well known for its breakfast offerings, fried chicken, fish and salad bar, among other items.

It would now be called Druther’s Restaurant. “A lot of stuff got added over the years,” he said. “[The company] wanted to change the name because it was so much more than the burgers.” Also in the ’80s came another big change that shaped the future of the business: the drive-thru. The restaurant added an extension onto the side of the building to accommodate the new trend that was quickly becoming commonplace in the fast food industry. “The drive-thru is the biggest change I’ve seen in the last 50 years in our business,” McCarty said. “I feel bad for places that don’t have one. Even pre-pandemic, half of our business was through that.” In 1990, corporate Druther’s underwent a significant change, selling the company to Dairy Queen as 117 stores across six states were converted to DQs. However, nine company-owned Druther’s and 12 independently owned Druther’s were unable to make the switch because of proximity conflicts with existing DQs in those communities. Campbellsville was among those that remained. “They said, ‘You can’t come with us,’” McCarty said. “‘You can keep the name if you want. Good luck.’ “Thirty years later, we didn’t know we’d still be kicking, but here we are.” McCarty admitted that it was “a little bit scary,” but the upside was that they wouldn’t have to pay franchise fees anymore and they were able to stay tied in with the suppliers, which has helped keep their prices low. While Campbellsville’s Druther’s continued to thrive, the other 11 independently owned stores weren’t so lucky. One by one, the number of Druther’s in the world slowly dwindled down. Around 20 years ago, as McCarty remembers it, the second-to-last one in Princeton finally shuttered its doors. Campbellsville

was officially the last Druther’s in operation. “We didn’t know anything different, and we just kept plugging away,” McCarty said. “Campbellsville’s been good to us. We’ve made a good living, served a lot of food. I’m just so thankful.”
‘I’d ruther go to Druther’s’
Druther’s traces its roots back to 1956, when Harold and Helen Kite opened a Burger Queen restaurant in Winter Haven, Florida. The business would eventually be expanded into a chain, with locations popping up in Kentucky, Tennessee and other southern states. Burger Queen Enterprises soon became headquartered in Louisville. The chain’s early expansion served as an introduction to the fast food concept for many rural communities across the south. By 1973, Burger Queen of Kentucky had already opened 50 locations, and by 1985, there were 152 Druther’s restaurants in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. Because of this, McCarty said his business regularly serves customers who have traveled significant distances for a taste of nostalgia. “We get a lot of people on weekends from around the state and even down in Tennessee,” he said. “Burger Queen/ Druther’s beat McDonald’s by a few years in rural Kentucky, so the first remembrance of fast food for so many rural Kentuckians was this franchise. It brings a lot of memories for a lot of people. “A lot more people that you might expect make that pilgrimage.” Whatever reason a customer may be visiting, though, McCarty wants them to leave with a positive experience. As he likes to say, he is in “the people business,” which means he is always

McCarty runs the last remaining Druther’s in the world, which is located in Campbellsville, alongside his sister Kathy Clark. striving to keep both his employees and customers happy. “You have to take care of your people on both sides of the counter,” McCarty said. “It’s a lot of hard work, and there’s always something to do: something that’s broken, something needs cleaning, something that needs to be cooked. It’s constant. “We have a lot of employees that have been here a long time, 10- or 15-year employees. You treat them good, and you expect them to treat your customers good.” That was the way he was taught, after all. While there have been many changes in the last 50 years, the values that

Charles and Joanna McCarty instilled in the restaurant from day one have remained. “I don’t know anything different because it’s the way mom and dad taught me,” McCarty said. “They always led by example. ‘Don’t ask anybody to do anything you wouldn’t do.’ ‘Treat people right.’ That’s what they taught me. “We serve up quality food,” he added. “If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t serve it. Even at 15 years old, I remember them teaching me that, and it’s still one of the first things we teach. It’s a whole lot better throwing it out and doing it right than serving it.” While treating people right is the most

essential part of Druther’s, it’s those same people that have given McCarty his “fondest memories” over the past 50 years. He’s served multiple generations of families and hopes to keep adding to that list, with no plans of stopping anytime soon. “Druther’s has been around forever, and as long as the Good Lord lets me, I’m going to keep doing it,” he said. “I’ve been [working at Druther’s] 43 years. It’s been a long time, but it’s gone by so fast. I’m thankful to be in good health and still able to serve. “50 years later and still kicking, God is good.”

owntown Campbellsville has seen a lot of changes in its appearance and physical growth in the last 15 years. The overall looks began to change between 2007 and 2009 along South Columbia Avenue when the city received $200,000 in Renaissance Funds for Downtown Development to design and construct new handicap accessible sidewalks lined with trees and grass from Broadway to East Main Street. This provided better access for pedestrians to negotiate their way across Broadway into downtown Campbellsville. The Taylor County Courthouse Square Park Beautification Project began in 2009 when the county received Transportation Enhancement funds in the amount of $131,000 to design and install a new sidewalk in the grassy courthouse lawn and a raised platform for public events. This public area offers pedestrians a curvilinear handicap accessible walkway that is enhanced with flowering plants, trees, benches and historical markers. At the same time, the county received TOUR SEKY C.I.T.Y. funds and a donation from Taylor County Tourism for a Civil War mural painted by artist Joshua Mason. This large mural enhances the West wall of the Taylor County Courthouse above the raised platform area where public activities, including annual memorial services, take place adjacent to the relocated Veterans Memorial monument. Although a few historical buildings were
demolished on the southeast corner of South Central Avenue and East Main Street in 2005 for the construction of the new Justice Center and Detention Center, this new development has improved the overall appearance of downtown and has attracted more businesses to occupy buildings within the commercial district. Renovations of numerous historical buildings have taken place over the years which have made Campbellsville a more attractive place to visit, work, play, dine and shop. Two major historical buildings: the 1909 Merchant Tower, formerly known as the Merchants Hotel, and the tallest historical building downtown, the 1905 Willock Building, located on the south side of East Main Street at South Columbia Avenue, are currently in the process of renovation. Adjacent to the Willock Building, H&W Sport Shop, reopened in early 2018 in the former 1905 Sapp’s Antiques building after the Sport Shop on South Central Avenue was struck by lightning in 2016. “We are so glad they decided to stay downtown and occupy one of our historic buildings instead of moving out of town,” said Campbellsville Main Street Director Donna Logsdon. With the help of matching state façade grant funds, 18 property owners in the commercial historic district spent more than $300,000 on their building exteriors between 2009 and 2011. Each owner who was funded received one-half of their expenses for exterior alterations that
were approved locally and by the State Historic Preservation Office. This has made a tremendous difference in the overall appearance in our historic downtown. In 2011, the city received funding through a grant from TOUR SEKY to design and install banners on pedestrian light poles. Colorful banners above the hanging flower pots on the pedestrian light poles along Main Street have enhanced the overall appearance of our historic district. When the Taylor County Public Library moved to its new location on Broadway in 2013, the city renovated one of its most historic buildings in town that was originally constructed in 1889 as the Campbellsville Baptist Church. The renovation was completed, and the building dedicated as the Campbellsville Civic Center on Dec. 1, 2013. The main floor accommodates the City Council Chambers with restored stained-glass windows, a pair of wooden paneled front doors, wood floors and ceiling, and a rose window. The building has been updated with current technology for meetings. Offices for Hope for Homes, Campbellsville Chamber of Commerce, Community Ventures, Greater Campbellsville United, Campbellsville Main Street and the Economic Development Authority are located in the rear education annex. A large meeting space is located in the lower level. Numerous of our oldest businesses have remained as strongholds to the commercial district including: Chandler’s Office Supply, now Kerr Workplace Solutions; Mitchell’s Clothing; Tucker Diamonds and Gold; Merle Norman; Cozy Comforts, formerly Cozy Theatre; Citizens Bank and Trust Company; Campbellsville Firestone, Taylor County Bank; Wise, Buck-

ner, Sprowles & Associates, PLLC; James Art Glass; the First United Methodist Church; and the 1865 old Taylor County Clerk’s Office, situated behind the Taylor County Courthouse, that serves as the office for the Taylor County Historical Society. Several building renovations in the commercial district have taken place over the years. Aaron and Jeremy Sharlow transformed Rainey’s Pawn Shop into Sharlow & Associates CPA office with a private residence on the second floor. Jack Pogue and former Judge-Executive Eddie Rogers enhanced the Bank of Campbellsville into Cakes by Camille on the first floor with an exquisite residence on the second floor. Bertram, Cox & Miller renovated the old post office into their law offices, making it a striking adaptive use of a WPA project. The Lyon-Beard Garage was transformed into Best Financial and the Taylor County Tourism Offices. The Stults Building, currently the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, was formerly The Twisted Stem. Paint and Party was formerly Chandler’s Office Furniture. Campbellsville Dental Care was formerly Nunery and Call Law Office. A Different Drummer was formerly The White Orchid on South Court Street. Edward Jones was formerly Humphress & Sons Cherry Furniture store on East Main Street. In recent years, a plethora of entrepre-
neurs have flocked to town and opened up businesses, including: The Green Room; Harden Coffee; Brothers Barbecue; Oak & Axe; Sweetwater Bookshop; The White Orchid; Jenny Lou Boutique; Yellow Rose & Co.; Cottage Corner; Amore Salon; The Spoke Easy; Bourbon Boutique; and Skinspiration. “I am happy we have historic buildings that can accommodate a wide range of businesses. It has certainly been great getting to know all the people who have made a difference downtown,” said Donna Logsdon. Community Ventures has helped clients start new businesses in the downtown historic district and throughout Taylor County. Executive Vice President Pam Russell, said, “It is exciting to help entrepreneurs start up and expand on a variety of businesses. Our downtown is healthy with new and existing businesses where we welcome revitalization on many levels.” Community Ventures helps entrepreneurs achieve their dreams by providing support, education and capital to small business owners. In 2016, the Downtown Business Association became Campbellsville Main Street, Inc. a 501 (c) 3 organization. They are dedicated to encouraging new businesses to occupy our historic buildings and assist with the growth and development of downtown Campbellsville and Taylor County. In 2018, a new building was con-
structed on a vacant lot on East Main Street, Hometown Wireless Bluegrass Cellular. Colorful flowers that drape over metal archways at the end of the alleys along East Main Street, developed by the city, encourages pedestrians to sit back and relax in an open space that is fragrant with the aroma of blossoming vegetation, tall trees, pedestrian lighting, tables, chairs and a trickling water fountain. In the winter, twinkle lights adorn the trees in the alley and light poles on Main Street, adding to the beauty and excitement of the city in the twilight of the evening. To celebrate Campbellsville’s Bicentennial in 2017, the city built a replica of a Grist Mill that was historically located along the creek on West Main Street. Andrew Campbell’s monument was relocated to this area and a park was developed to commemorate the founding of Campbellsville. A time capsule full of current and historical items was buried in the ground at that location during the dedication. Today, downtown Campbellsville is a reflection of a series of well-thought-out beautification efforts that have made it a visually exciting community that continues to attract businesses to flourish and expand in our community.
