Junior quarterback Jeremiah Northern returns to take the snaps from center, and he has some talented receivers to target. “We feel really good about our skill positions,” Stone said. “This will be the most depth we’ve had in receivers since I’ve been here. We have seven or eight guys we can roll in at receiver without missing a beat. We’re excited about what we can do passing gamewise. Jeremiah has another year under his belt. Last year he was a bright-eyed sophomore
playing 5A football against 5A/6A competition, so a lot to ask of the kid but he stood there, he learned and took his lumps, and we think he’s going to have a big season for us this year at quarterback. He’s bulked up; he’s about 235 now; he’s kept his speed, so we’re excited about it.” Some of Northern’s big targets this year will include receivers Willie King (6-foot-3) and Tavares Townsend (6-foot-2), as well as speedy Ty’Quon Love (5-foot-7) and Omarion Russell (5-foot-7). Blocking for Northern will be sophomore left tackle Wills Gullic (6-foot-5, 275 pounds), sophomore left guard Travis Luster (6-foot-1, 260), senior center Devin Cammack (5-foot-10, 250), senior right guard Grant Langston (5-foot-10, 240) and junior right tackle DaShawn Dority (6-foot-1, 295). Defensively, Blytheville should be solid in the secondary, with John
Johnson and Lafayette King starting at corner, Kylen Wells at safety and Tavares Townsend at free safety. Randie Booker, Levin Reed, Jaylin Johnson and Omarion Russell are also expected to get snaps in the secondary. “We have some really good depth in the secondary that we haven’t had in the past, and we’re excited about that,” Stone said. “Those guys can get out there and run and hit. This should be our fastest defense we’ve had since I’ve been here, so we’re looking forward to that and seeing what those guys can do and actually having some depth. This is the first time we’ve had depth in really every position.” Up front, Tyrece Gant will start at defensive end; Tim Bohannon at nose; Tarus Crawford at tackle; Dekari Clark at Sam linebacker; Maki Rainer at Mike; Jontavion Bruin at Will; and Dee Wells at Ram.

he 2020 Gosnell Pirates are loaded with talent in the skill positions, including some who will likely play on Saturdays in the future. Junior dynamic running back Travelle Anderson has the attention of several Division I schools and enters the season ranked as the 40th best running back in the nation. He has offers from North Texas, Arkansas State University, Kansas and Colorado State. Anderson runs a 4.41 40-yard dash, and Gosnell head coach Lewis Earnest expects him to have a big season out of the backfield for the Pirates. Anderson piled up 240 yards and found the end zone twice in the opener at Brookland.
“Travelle, last year, was one of the leading backs for yards per carry as a true sophomore and he split time with Jy Young. So he didn’t get as many carries as he’d like but he is just a special athlete,” Earnest said earlier this summer. “He has elite speed - 4.41 40 - and is up to 205 pounds now. He is just an elite athlete. As soon as (Kansas University assistant coach) Brent Dearmon saw his film he offered the next morning.” Senior quarterback Cooper Pieri also returns behind center to lead the Pirates. “He’s better this year than he was last year,” Earnest said of Pierri. “He’s more comfortable. He’s done really well in the camp that we’ve had.” Pieri, who has committed to play
baseball at ASU, has several weapons to throw to this season, even after losing his top target, Amarion Partee, to graduation. Druw Reynolds is back at wide receiver and caught nearly everything thrown his away last season. Also lining up at receiver will be Lane Wilkey and JJ Chapman. Charles Kennemore will be the starting tight end. The Pirates should be solid up front as they return five linemen, including right guard Tederian Blair who has received an offer from Kansas and interest from other Division I schools. “Blair, you know you can’t teach size. ten a lot of calls about Blair. They just haven’t offered him yet because they want to see him in person. They want to make sure that he is 6’4,” Earnest said earlier this summer. “USC has called. Georgia has called. Oklahoma has called and a lot of smaller schools have called too like UCA and Arkansas State have all called about Blair too. They just kind of want to see him in person to make sure. Film, you can’t tell exactly how tall he is and stuff like that.” Joining Blair in the trenches are right tackle Cameron Ruth, center Ty Ketchum, left guard Josh Sands and left tackle Joseph Wilson. Earnest expects the Pirates
to be improved on defense. “Defense, I’ve been really excited about,” he said. “(Defensive ends) Landon Hicks and Whit McDonald have looked much better than anticipated this year. Now, they’ve always been good players. They’ve taken it to the next level.” Ahmad Turner will start at nose guard, and filling out the front seven are linebackers Tru Walker, Jake Higgins, Jason Shepard and Garrett Gentry. “I think our front seven will be much better than last year,” Earnest said. Gosnell will be young in the secondary with sophomore Reid Shelton and Nate Ward at corner and sophomore Floyd Williams and

The quarterbacks will be juniors Dontaven Littleton (6-2, 200) and Harris, along with Bell. Bell quarterbacked the junior high team in 2018 and 2019. Littleton was the primary back up throwing for more than 600 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2019. Littleton also is a threat to run and is not afraid to pull the ball down and get whatever yardage he can get if the pass play is not there. Littleton gained 146 yards on 28 carries and had two scores last season.
Junior Jonathan Stovall will be the primary ball carrier. Stovall (5-9, 165) played well in limited action as a sophomore. Senior Alton Bornds (5-8, 150) along with sophomores Skyler Young (5-9, 160) and Logan Slayton (5-9, 160) will also see time in the backfield. Slayton will handle the Seminole kickoffs and will also attempt extre points and field goals. On defense the Seminoles will be smaller across the front but far more athletic than in the last two seasons. On the line at the defensive end positions will be sophomores Isaac Kimble (6-0, 205), Taylun Hooks (6-0, 170) and Terrence Marshall (6-0, 175). Marshall will also see time inside at the nose
guard position. Seniors Coleman, Scott, Harris and Wiley will also start and rotate at the end spots. Inside at the nose guard beside Marshall will be Caruthers, Tobar and Gryner. The linebacking corp will be experienced and a team strength. The outside linebackers will include Vornes, Williams, Bell, Black and sophomores Quincy Hamilton (6-0, 240) and McNeal. The inside linebackers include Stovall, Young, Brooks; the leading returning tackler from 2019 with 54, Littleton; the 2019 sack leader with seven and 47 stops overall, Person, 44 tackles in 2019, and Slayton. The Seminole secondary will have at corner back Ennis, Brown, Clayton,
Bornds, Poole and Haymon. Safeties will include Charles, Don Littleton, 79 stops at linebacker, Tribblet and Person. The Seminoles opened the season at home in week zero against the Crossett Eagles of Class 4A, They then face Class 4A-3 Conference members Blytheville and Gosnell in Weeks one and two. After a break in week three, the Seminoles open conference play at home against Corning, Sept. 25. The Seminoles begin October with a home date against Piggott (10/2). October 9 and 16 the Seminoles are on the road at Patestine-Wheatley and Harrisburg before facing Walnut Ridge (10-23) and Hoxie (10-30) at home. Osceola closes the regular

The Hoxie Mustangs and the Harrisburg Hornets, along with Walnut Ridge, are considered threats to challenge the Seminoles for the 3-3A.
“Everybody in the conference is tough. There are no easy outs,” said the Seminoles Carter.” “I expect everyone we play to be tough. No one is going to come in here and lay down. They are all going to give it their best shot. There is a lot of talent on this team and I know we have the ability to put it all together. But we have a long, long way to go,” said the coach.

The other guard would be either sophomore Trent Kimbrough (6-0, 275), Quavon Gordon (5-9, 210), or Darrius Johnson. They are all competing for that spot. The tackles will be last year’s center senior Connor Gray (5-11, 275) and senior Gunnar McCullar (6-0, 230). Junior Trent Copeland (6-0, 210) and Gordon will be the back ups. Sophomores Tristin Turner and Andre Harris (6-0, 320), along with Shytan Williams, will also be in the mix on the o-line. “We need the offensive line to come together. They are learning the plays and need to improve their blocking,” said the coach. In the backfield the Colts talented senior quarterback Kamron Turner (6-0, 160) will be the starter. “Kam brings energy and big play ability. He needs to get better at reading our run-pass option. There are only three possibilities with the RPO. If you wait it out in the pass someone should be open,” said Fleming. The back
up will be junior Mike Sharp. “Mike has good touch on his throws and his midrange throws are solid,” said Fleming. “He gives us a different look at that position.” The fullback will be senior Omar Phillips who will also get some looks at the H-Back spot. “Omar is a tough runner inside and he has soft hands and is an excellent pass receiver,” said Fleming. The slot position will be Keshawn Scott (5-9, 165). Scott will also get looks at the fullback spot. “Keshawn is a tough runner and has great hands as a receiver. He isn’t the fastest guy in the world but he goes full speed,” said Fleming. Another player who will get time at the slot spot is junior Clay Burks (5-11, 145). “Clay is our best route runner and he has not missed a single day of work since we started back up in June,” said Fleming. Trey Jones will also see time at the fullback and H-back position. The outside receivers include Jaylon West (6-2, 170). “Jaylon could be our go to guy near the end zone. We might throw
him some jump balls,” said Fleming. The other outside receivers are senior Elijah Nichols (5-8,9, 140) and Demarco Cuble (5-9, 155). Other candidates are Colton Spence who has improved his receiving skills. Lath Latham (5-8, 145) is a solid receiver and as tough as they come. Scott, Brandyn Brownlee, Austin Elrod, Jaden Stovall (5-8, 145) and T.J. Scott also work at receiver. On defense the Colts will be strong up front with the nose being manned by Phillips. The tackles will be Kimbrough and McCullar. Kimbrough will also back up Phillips at the nose position. Gray will also work at tackle, as will Gordon. Johnson, Harris, Chirinos and Ball will also play inside.The ends will be Keshawn Scott and Brownlee who will be backed up by sophomores Stovall and T.J. Scott. The linebackers are still not settled. However, Latham Jones, Sharp and Stovall will all see snaps there, while Williams and Gordon are also working at that position. The defensive backfield will be at the

corners Burks and Nichols, who will also play both cornerback spots. The safety positions will be manned by West and Turner. “Kamron gets out of position sometimes and he needs to learn to stay at home. But he tends to make plays either way,” said Fleming. Sharp is also working at safety. “Mike knows the right place to be,” said Fleming. Other players working to find their place on the team are Brandyn Champion, Aiden Ezell and Jay Robertson. The coach also praised the work of
sophomores Elrod and T.J. Scott who are looking good at safety in practice. The kicking will be done by McCullar and Phillips. “Gunnar is the most consistent,” said Fleming. Kickoffs will be handled by McCullar and Shawn Smith. Punting will be an adventure this season with Turner and Brownlee both working there. “We have toyed with the idea of using the Pulaski Academy method of just going for it on fourth down,” Fleming said with a laugh. As for the season, Fleming thinks his

first 15 or so are as good as anybody in the conference. “I think this all comes down to who stays healthy and depth,” said the coach. “Athletically, we are as good as any team in the 3-4A.” The Colts are also working on being less predictable. “We are changing our snap counts up some to keep people honest,” said the coach. “I think we can be in the mix in the end if things fall right. We start off with three 5A schools. It is time to get this going and see what happens.”

Lions will ‘adapt, overcome’
M
anila Senior football players are ready for the 2020 season in spite of so many unknowns throughout the summer practices due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 25-member team has six seniors returning and is under the direction of head coach Jake Hill and assistant coaches Danny Helms, Alex Richard, Cain White and volunteer coach David McDonald. Coach Hill is going into his third year at MHS (second year as head coach). Coach Hill said with the low numbers, everyone will be playing on both sides of the ball. All of the players will need to step up and Coach HIll is con-
fident they will. “These kids have bought into what we are trying to do as a coaching staff,” Coach Hill said. “They have really worked hard this summer and have made a commitment to our off season program. We are all very excited to get to play football.” They will be taking it one week at a time. COVID-19 has hindered all teams in their preparation and conditioning for the season. “Like the old military saying, we will adapt and overcome,” Coach Hill said. “Along with football, we try to teach our kids life situations. on Aug. 18. “We do not know who will be starting until the first week of play,” Coach HIll said. All of the players are equally important. The first regular season game will be at home with the Manila Lions hosting EPC on Sept. 4.
