It is my honor to be the first to welcome you to Webster County. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a visitor to our community, Webster County has much to offer you. Tucked away just miles from Mississippi State University you will find our county is full of natural resources and beauty like Whites Creek Lake and the Natchez Trace Parkway. Many of our residents make the most of our natural resources through work and play. The county has a rich history in the timber and agriculture industries along with manufacturing. Companies are choosing to locate in Webster County because of the low cost of doing business, ease of access to four-lane highways and available infrastructure such as high-speed fiber. The Webster County School District and schools receive statewide recognition yearly for outstanding performance. The commitment to education does not end with the local school systems. All high school graduates in Webster County are eligible for the Summers Grant. This grant pays for full or partial tuition at local community colleges and universities for residents to further their education. Webster County offers residents first-class resources and amenities in a quiet and pristine setting. Local boutiques and businesses provide oneof-a-kind unique hometown shopping. Eupora is home to North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora, offering acute care and long-term hospital beds and specialists available in a variety of fields locally for residents. Those who reside within Webster County know about the well-kept secrets of the county, but hopefully not for long. Webster County is committed to economic growth and prosperity for their residents. Originally a part of Choctaw County, Webster County was established April 6, 1874, under the name of Sumner County. On Jan. 30, 1882, its name was changed to Webster, in honor of the great statesman Daniel Webster. The county seat is located in Walthall. Once a predominately agricultural economy, Webster County saw a rise in manufacturing that began in the mid-1900s. Cotton, corn and timber are the leading agricultural products grown in Webster County. Made of up 425 square miles of pristine land and beautiful countryside, Webster County has an abundance of hunting properties and lakes. The headwaters of the Big
Black River are located in the northeastern part of Webster County. The Natchez Trace Scenic Parkway runs through Webster County.
Eupora
Eupora was earlier known as Early Grove. In 1888, the Georgia-Pacific Railroad began surveying a route on the north side of the Big Black. The final route was a line down the Big Black Valley, passing through the site of present-day Eupora. Engineers laying out the route of the railroad they boarded in the home of Jim Eudy and his wife, Eupora. The engineers were so struck with the euphony of the word “Eupora” that they declared

Mantee
The village of Mantee was originally known as the Center Grove community. In 1895, S.F. Gullett, who was postmaster at the time, was informed that another town in the state was called by the name of Center Grove. He sent in the name “Montee” for one of daughters. The name, however, was misspelled with an “a” and the town went on record as Mantee; the error was never corrected. In 1904, the railroad was built through the community and the town moved to its current location along the railroad. The village of Mantee has a popu-

The land that makes up Mathiston was originally 80 acres of land sold by George Polk Clegg to W.G. “Bill” Mathis. A 20-acre tract was conveyed to the Georgia-Pacific Railroad for depot purposes in February 1889. The place was appropriately named Mathis Town in his honor. In later years, the pronunciation was changed and made into one single word, Mathiston. The town was incorporated in 1890. Today, Mathiston is the second-largest municipality in Webster County with

a population of approximately 698.
Walthall
In May 1876, Mount Tabor, known today as Walthall, became the official county seat of Sumner County. By the order of the Board of Supervisors on May 23, 1876, the name of the county seat was changed from Mount Tabor to Walthall. The village grew quickly. The new Webster County Courthouse is located in Walthall on Highway 9 across from the Highway 50 intersection. It replaces the historic courthouse on

the square that burned in 2013. The village has converted the site of the former courthouse and surrounding grounds into a community park with the assistance of the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The village of Walthall has a population of 144. ---------------

of the COVID-19 pandemic. Webster County teachers have overcome many obstacles and have stepped up to the challenge. The district received CARES funds in response to the pandemic and is utilizing those funds currently. The district employed two school nurses with the response funds for the 2020-21 school year. Student enrollment districtwide is about 1,800, with some students traditionally learning as well as distance learning. The school district still currently holds to a small pupil-to-teacher ratio and one of the smallest individual property tax rates in the state with pride. #WEbster
Eupora Elementary School Eupora Elementary School is located in Eupora within the Webster County School District. Eupora Elementary currently nurtures and educates 410 students. Eupora Elementary School serves students from pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. Students at Eupora Elementary School have the opportunity to learn and go further than they knew they could go under the direction of highly qualified teachers and an extremely dedicated staff. At EES, we know that we are the beginning of a child’s education; therefore, we work hard to give
each child the foundation they need to be successful in what lies ahead of them. It is a tremendous challenge and responsibility to see that all students’ educational needs are met, and at EES, we work together to see that this is done. One way that we, at EES, are able to do this is through our Extended Learning Time. Teachers are using this time daily to incorporate needed intervention time in targeted areas to address each student’s individual needs. Eupora Elementary also benefits from a school interventionist who works with individual students or small groups of students to provide educational interventions and progress monitoring.
The school interventionist also works with school personnel in the Problem Solving Model-Response to Intervention process by assisting in determining intervention plans. Teachers also work hand-in-hand with special education teachers to ensure that students’ individual educational needs are met. Not only are students monitored and guided academically at EES, they are guided in their attitudes and behavior. The Positive Behavior Support program that was implemented years ago, aimed at emphasizing positive behavior in the students at EES, was a resounding success. The data shows fewer discipline problems and teachers report an overall quieter, cleaner campus.

East Webster High School East Webster High School is located in the Cumberland community and serves about 490 students in grades 6-12. The school prides itself on achieving a successful blend of academic and athletic excellence. We are very proud of the dedication of all our faculty and students to academic excellence. Another source of pride is East Webster’s thriving dual credit/dual enrollment program in cooperation with Holmes Community College. Juniors and seniors who qual-
ify may take these college courses while still in high school, thus gaining high school and college credit simultaneously. Athletic excellence is also a source of pride for EWHS. Athletic programs include football, softball, cross-country, track, basketball, tennis, baseball, powerlifting and golf. Visual and performing arts are an important aspect of education at East Webster High School. Students are offered opportunities to participate in band, chorus, drama, dance, art and journalism. Webster County Career and Technology Center The Webster County Career and Technology Center serves students in grades 9-12 from East Webster and Eupora high schools. Using a “hands-on approach” to learning, the faculty is dedicated to preparing students to excel in a career as well as to succeed academically. Through their units of

The Agricultural Power and Machinery program received ARC POWER grant funds, purchasing a CNC precision lathe, plasma cutter and welders to be used by Webster County School District students and Holmes Community College to help build a competitive manufacturing workforce. Lessons in the APM program include the theory and practical aspects of hydraulic systems and internal combustion engines, including diesel and small engines. Knowledge from the Ag Power program gives students access to a wide range of career paths such as structural engineering, marine and land diesel engine repair and maintenance, and heavy equipment design. Students are encouraged to participate in FFA, the student organization of APM.
Automotive Service Technology
Jerry Vaughn’s Auto program teaches first-year students the fundamentals of auto service and repair such as changing oil, wiper blades, engine and transmission fluids; replacing spark plugs; rotating tires and other general tune-up procedures. State-of-the-art equipment such as a Hunter alignment machine, a computerized tire balancer and a tire changer are used in the automotive shop. Second-year students receive instruction in the fundamentals of

suspension and steering systems; fundamentals of engine performance and diagnostic procedures, alternate fuel fundamentals and advanced engine performance such as computerized engine controls, electronic engine systems and diagnostics. Students who complete two years in the program are ready for entry-level service jobs and are eligible to participate in an automotive program at a community college. SkillsUSA is the student organization for AST.
Business, Marketing and Finance
The Business program is a popular program of study at the WCCTC, and Dionne Wolf is the instructor. The academic, technical and employability skills students learn in this program prepare them for successful postsecondary training and education as well as for successful entry into a business or career field. Units of study include marketing, economics, human resource management, personal and business finance and management.

Health Science and Clinical Services
The Health Science and Clinical Services program is taught by Amanda Brown, RN, BSN. Students who complete all requirements will be

certified in CPR at the health-care provider level and will be trained in first aid. Successful completion of the program’s exit exam gives students points toward admission to a postsecondary health care program. Students learn about various health care occupations so they can make informed career choices. Over the course of two years, students receive 100 hours of clinical-type experiences, which include tours of health-care facilities, guest speakers, labor a t o r y practice/demonstration in the classroom and observation experiences in medical facilities. Health Science students actively participate in Health Occupations Students of America, a student leadership organization.
Forest Harvesting and Production Technology
Buck Meek is the instructor for the Forestry program. Forestry is one of the top industries in Mississippi and a top agricultural industry in the United States. First-year students learn tree and plant identification, forest surveying and mapping, timber cruising, legal land descriptions, and tree and log measurements. Second-year in-

Students also participate in field experiments and learn about biomass fuel production. Forest Harvesting and Production Technology students actively participate in FFA, the student organization for this program.
Teacher Academy
WCCTC’s newest program is Teacher Academy. Nationally Board Certified Teacher Teresa Whitaker is the instructor. This program is designed to attract students to the field of education, provide experiences relevant to pursuing a degree in education and prepare students for the rigors of a career in education so they will remain long-term educators. It is a requirement of the course for students to log hours in classroom observation and participation in Webster County classrooms. This profits both the Teacher Academy program, as well as the students and schools being assisted.

School district ranked among best in state The Webster County School District ranked in the top 25 school districts in Mississippi in 2021 Niche rankings released in mid-October 2020. The WCSD was ranked 24th among the top 25 districts in the state and received an overall Niche grade of B, according to niche.com’s 2021 rankings. The Webster County School District has 1,795 students in grades K12 with a student-teacher ratio of 15:1, Niche said on the ranking website.
