Sports Spotlight:

Creasey ecstatic to continue her volleyball career Will ‘dearly’ miss softball. By William Seidel For the Staunton River High School Softball Team, the thought of losing out on a promising season is tough to swallow, but the thought of losing out on one more go around from their three seniors is even tougher. One of these three seniors was Hollie Creasey, who will be continuing her athletic career at Eastern Mennonite University. She won’t be going there for softball but instead will go for volleyball. Don’t think that Creasey wasn’t a valuable player on the softball field. She was actually a very important piece to the softball program at SRHS. Last year in 2019, the year the Golden Eagles went back to the state playoffs after reaching the previous year, Creasey’s batting average was .408, and she had a 1,000 percent fielding average. With those types of numbers, Creasey was awarded honors of first-team All-Blue Ridge District and second-team All-Region. For those who know Creasey, those numbers and awards don’t come as a surprise, especially given her dedication to softball throughout her life. Creasey noted that softball was her favorite sport growing up. In fact, she wrote a letter to herself one day that she was going to college to play softball and then become a coach af afterward. “Growing up in a family who loved softball and stayed at the

softball field, there was never a doubt in my mind that one day I would go and play softball in college,” Creasey said. Looking at her history, it’s understandable why she had those goals for her. She began playing softball at 5 years old in the recreation league, where she spent the majority of her time pitching. When she was 11 years old, the all-star rec team she played on went all the way to the state championship game but fell short. She said that her favorite memory playing in her younger years was going all the way to state. In the middle of her rec days, at age 8, Creasey joined her first travel team known as Maroon Crush, where she played outfield. Later on, she switched travel teams and started playing for the Stix, where she pitched and played middle infield. It was around this time where she started playing softball for Staunton River Middle School as well. The next year, Creasey was moved up to Junior Varsity when she was in the eighth grade and played middle infield. She then switched travel teams again her freshman year and started playing for the Virginia Scrappers, where she also played middle infield and outfield. She then finished out her last three years playing in the outfield for varsity after moving up her sophomore year. SRHS Head Coach Scott Cisco had plenty of praise for his

now former player. “Hollie had a positive attitude and work ethic,” he said. “I will always remember and miss her sense of humor. She always kept the team laughing and loose. I definitely look for her to be successful at EMU or anywhere else for that matter.” Creasey also had high praises for her now former coach. “Coach Cisco has not only been my school ball coach but also my travel coach for a year. I can’t thank him enough for all the time he put into the game for us. He has definitely impacted me throughout my softball career; he taught me to push myself to become a stronger and better player,” she said. “But not only did I use that for softball, I used that in life as well, and I will carry that with me as I move on to further my volleyball career. I will certainly miss Cisco and the rest of the coaching staff at Staunton River.” With her history of playing softball being known, most will wonder why Creasey didn’t continue her softball career. She actually had plans to do so until an injury during her senior year playing volleyball made her reevaluate her decision. In the middle of her senior year playing volleyball, Creasey hurt her shoulder and was sidelined for a couple of weeks. During her time away from volleyball, she noticed she wasn’t ready to call it quits on the sport. “I realized the love I had gained for volleyball and how much it meant to me,” Creasey said. “It was a place where the world was behind me and it was just me doing what I loved, and I was not ready to give that up yet.” What is Creasey’s career in volleyball? It’s actually a lot less than her softball career. She first started playing in seventh grade for the middle school team and joined a travel team called the Net Force as well. She played with her travel team all the way up to her senior year. Creasey was then moved up to JV her eighth-grade year at SRHS, and her position was outside hitter. The next year, when Creasey arrived to SRHS as a freshman, is when she was moved up varsity. From there, she was the starting outside hitter her freshman year and then moved her sophomore year to right-side starting hitter, which was her permanent position for the next three years. Creasey not only switched positions, but she also was named team captain and held that position for the next three years. So yes, one can argue that Creasey was just as good if not better at volleyball than she was at softball. Her head volleyball coach at SRHS, Sharon Blake, spoke about how EMU is going to get an “amazing student athlete” in Creasey. “Hollie is all about the team. She is dedicated and gives 100 percent during practice and games,” she said. “She always asks for feedback after practice/drills to improve her skill. She understands what it means to be a part of a team and doing what’s best for the team, even if that means she plays in a position that is outside of her comfort zone.” Blake said Creasey had a “team before me” attitude. Saying she was a role model for the underclassmen and overheard many girls in middle school say that they want to be able to play just like her. Blake

also said Creasey showed “immense leadership skills,” especially in the locker room, saying she was always determined to help her teammates to not stress about mistakes and move forward. “Hollie is fun-loving and one of the most caring young women you will ever meet,” she said. “She always finds the positive in every situation.” Like Cisco, Creasey had a lot of positive things to say about her former volleyball coach. “Coach Blake was more than a coach for me, she was also like a mother figure. As I grew up, she was there and always willing to help and be there for me. I know I’ve never said this to her personally and regret every bit of it, but she is someone who has impacted my life greatly,” she said. Creasey also added that when she was awarded captain, she never thought she could do it, but Blake helped find it in her the confidence to lead. She said this helped her learn to care and help her teammates and people in general the right way. Creasey then mentioned that when someone has that type of impact on your life, saying goodbye is very difficult, and she will miss her now former head coach dearly. As for why Creasey chose Eastern Mennonite, Creasey said it was many reasons. She pointed out that the atmosphere on campus was very welcoming, friendly, and you felt like you never met a stranger. She also noted that the small and quiet campus also was appealing to her. Creasey said she plans to major in nursing and is hoping to later on become an oncology nurse. Believe it or not, Creasey actually had an offer to continue her softball career along with her volleyball career at EMU but decided that playing both sports while being in nursing school was going to be too much to handle and decided to just stick with volleyball. With her softball career officially over after almost 14 years, Creasey mentioned that softball still means so much to her and losing her senior year has been a “heartbreak,” stating she never thought it was going to end this way. Regardless, Creasey is very thankful for everything softball brought in her life, and she will take it with her for the rest of her life. “The memories and the relationships that were made playing softball is one thing I will cherish forever, because softball brought things into my life that have made me so happy and kept me going,” she said. “Softball will for sure be dearly missed in my life.” Not only will Creasey miss softball, but she will never forget her days as a student-athlete at SRHS. Like the old saying goes, you never forget where you came from. That statement rings true for Creasey and will for the rest of her life as well. “Staunton River will always be home, there was never a moment I didn’t feel right being there. From the staff to my classmates, there was so much love shared. It offered me so much and so many memories,” she said. “I will miss my time at Staunton River and the people who surrounded me here, but one thing about it is, if I ever need anything, I know I can turn back and they will be right there for me.”

Mitchell thankful for everything lacrosse has given to him By William Seidel Franklin County High School Boy’s Lacrosse team featured eight seniors this year, with only three playing more than two years. Bryce Mitchell was one of the three seniors who played more than two years; in fact he was the first of the bunch to actually start playing lacrosse. Just like his senior teammates, Mitchell was crushed to learn that his last year playing lacrosse ended before it even began. “It’s hard,” Mitchell said, “I wish we could have at least one more game just to have closure for our senior year. I still can’t believe it’s over; it’s hard to come to grips with the reality of it all.” One of the main reasons why losing his senior year was hard for Mitchell was because lacrosse meant so much to him. From the first day he picked up a lacrosse stick till he hung the cleats up for good, lacrosse was a major part of his life. His passion for lacrosse started while Mitchell was in the fifth grade. He got an invite from a local couple to come try out lacrosse to see how he liked it. That couple was Cindy and Don Barber, who at the time, were trying to build the lacrosse program in Franklin County. Mitchell agreed, and the rest is history. “I fell in love with the sport immediately,” he said. “I knew this was the sport I wanted to continue to play.” Mitchell noted that he had played other sports growing up as well, such as basketball, soccer and baseball. He also played golf in middle school and continued to play basketball up until his freshman year. Even though he had fun playing these sports, none of them compared

to his love or dedication for lacrosse. When it came to lacrosse, Mitchell was always practicing or playing. In fact, he was one the main reasons that got his older brother, Evan, interested in the sport. From there, the siblings shared a different form of brotherly love, by practicing in their backyard together and pushing each other to get better. They both ended up playing high school lacrosse together, which furthered their relationship. He mentioned that his brother was one of his biggest critics but one of his biggest supporters. “He was there for me either giving me constructive criticism or telling me I had some great plays,” Mitchell said. “Evan and I will definitely cherish these memories.” Throughout the years, Mitchell’s growth and dedication to get better didn’t go unnoticed. One of those who noticed how much Mitchell has grown as a person and player is his now former head coach. FCHS Boy’s Lacrosse Coach Tyler Poage had coached Mitchell before they both went to Franklin County High School. He said that Mitchell had grown into a leadership role with his other experienced seniors, Brandon Siebler and T.J. Puckett, and that he was going to depend on all three to help the other inexperienced seniors get up to speed with the game of lacrosse. Poage also added that Mitchell was “always smiling” when he came to practice, and it didn’t matter if he had a bad or good practice prior. He also said that Mitchell knew how to keep the team loose with

his positive personality but was always ready to go to work when he stepped on the field for games and practices. “He always liked to have fun without crossing any lines, and he also knew when to be serious,” Poage said. With Mitchell and Poage spending a lot of time together from a coach-player relationship, it was a given that they were going to make many memories. Two of Poage’s fondest memories of Mitchell was seeing him constantly smiling and how other coaches always recommended he get a haircut after seeing how his long hair hanged out of his helmet. His developing friendship with Poage is one great memory that lacrosse has brought to Mitchell. “Coach has been with me from the beginning, and he has been a huge support in my high school years,” he said. “He has become a great friend, and I will always be grateful for his advice and friendship.” Mitchell formed a lot of friendships and made a lot of people proud during his lacrosse years, but he would be hard pressed to find anyone who is more prouder of him than his mother and former “team mom” of the boy’s lacrosse team, Belinda Mitchell. She mentioned how her son was an instrumental piece for the FC Lacrosse Club and high school team; she also noted that he was always trying to recruit new players to come out. Like Poage, Belinda Mitchell said that she always had parents and players tell her about how great of a personality her son has, even if

the team or he, personally, didn’t play a good game. That, along with seeing how dedicated her son was to the sport, just reminds her even more that playing lacrosse is where Mitchell was meant to be. “I knew from the very first practice in 2012 that lacrosse was his sport and it was a passion of his,” she said. “Bryce has made many valuable friendships and learned a great deal about leadership and team work that he will be able to carry forward in life.” After consideration of continuing his career in college, Mitchell decided it was best to hang up the cleats and call it a playing career. However, he is far from being done with the sport. He still wants to be involved any way he can, by keeping stats and having the opportunity to be a coach one day. As far as what he plans to do next, Mitchell plans to attend Virginia Western Community College, then transfer to Virginia Tech and major in Environmental Resource Management with a minor in Forestry. Although his playing career is over, Mitchell will take with him all the life lessons he learned from the game and the friendships he developed for the rest of his life. “Lacrosse has been a huge impact in my life, and the main thing I will miss is my friends and the good times we have had together on the playing field,” he said. “We were a good team and played well together.”

Crivaro has high praises for her two senior tennis players By William Seidel

The Staunton River High School (SRHS) Women’s Tennis team featured only two seniors on this year’s squad. The difference in these two seniors, however, is experience. One of the two seniors, Audrey Barns, was entering her first year playing tennis. The other senior, Julianne Hughes, was entering her fourth year of playing tennis. When it comes to Hughes, tennis has been a way to escape stressful times and interact with other people. When she started playing the game, she never had any experience or knowledge of the game. “I started playing tennis my freshman year of high school; prior to that I had never even picked up a tennis racket,” said Hughes. “Tennis intrigued me because it’s a game anyone can play no matter the age, and I wanted to learn a sport that did not end at high school. Another benefit is that it’s mainly an independent sport but also has a teamwork element when playing in doubles.” Seniors, for the most part, always try to lead the way for the younger players. Being the only senior with lots of experience, Hughes mentioned that she was always there lend a helping hand to her teammates, but she always remained humbled when doing so. Whenever her teammates needed help, Hughes was always there to lead, but she was quick to point out that she never saw herself as being above her teammates despite being a captain or having seniority. SRHS Women’s Tennis Head Coach Claire Crivaro said that Hughes was always someone she can count on in her four years of coaching her.

“She listens well to directions and is a role model to the new players,” she said. “Whenever asked, she was always there to help others. I can always count on her to take her responsibilities seriously. She’s a natural leader.” Crivaro also said that it has been a joy to coach Hughes in the four years she has had her as a player and is thankful she stuck with her through the years. A couple of features that Crivaro mentioned about Hughes was her toughness and remaining a student of the game, noting how she gave 100 percent every time she stepped on the tennis court to help her team and how she was constantly able to recognize areas of the game she needed to improve on. Barns, on the other hand, comes from a softball background. Having played the game her whole life, she always had an urge to play tennis. “I always remembered noticing how much fun the tennis players were having, and I had always said to my friends and family that I wish I could try it,” said Barns. She said she did it all when it came to softball, such as recreation, travel ball and school ball. It got to the point during her junior year however, where Barns felt it was more going through the motions than having fun. So, for her senior year, she wanted a change. William Seidel/Lake Life

The main factor for Barns was regret. She didn’t want to have the thought of not trying tennis and finding out if she could love it as much as softball. Barns noted that it was tough leaving behind softball her senior year, especially when SRHS was coming off an appearance in the state tournament the previous year. She remembered during that season all the love and appreciation they received from fans and classmates. This made her decision to walk away and try something new even more difficult. Barns noted that many people weren’t going to understand her reasoning for leaving softball, but having the support of her friends and family helped make the transition to tennis easier for her. When she started tennis, she enjoyed every minute of it. According to her teammate, Hughes, Barns was a fast learner of the game as well. “The sport came to Audrey naturally, so there was never a need to catch her up to speed too much,” said Hughes. Crivaro also had similar praises for the first-time tennis player. Stating she “took the sport almost immediately.” “She has such a natural talent for athletics that after one practice, she was able to hang with the top seeded players,” said Crivaro. “In practice you could see how determined she was to get up to speed with the other girls to learn strategy and skills that can take time to perfect. After one week, if you didn’t know, you wouldn’t be able to

tell she was a new player.” The one thing Barns wishes she could’ve experienced more in her short time as a tennis player for SRHS was being taught more under Crivaro. She recalls how Crivaro taught her how to properly hold a racket, place her feet, swing forward and backward, and to serve in the first three days of her practicing. She noticed how fundamentals were very important when it came to Crivaro and how she ran her practices. Barns said that was her favorite thing about her coaching philosophy, was that she was all about repetitions and getting it right. Hughes had more praise for her coach as well. Saying she has always been a patient coach and was able to “teach players at a variety of levels and always communicate their areas of growth and ways they can improve.” She said Crivaro has that unique ability to connect and understand the students she coaches. As far as their plans outside of high school and tennis goes, Hughes said she plans to attend Christopher Newport University and major in legal studies with a minor in political studies. She mentioned that she might pursue tennis on an intramural team, but nothing that will involve lots of commitment. “Tennis will always be a fun game to play and a great way to get exercise, so tennis is definitely not something I am done with,” she said. Barns plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in biology and to hopefully pursue a career in the medical field.

From a simple joke to reality, new owners starting new legacy at Drifters By William Seidel

It’s a new era for the restaurant located at 1617 Crystal Shore Drive in Moneta, which was once named Waller’s. Long-time couple Ryan Walters and Jaclyn Westfall both teamed up to buy the restaurant, which was previously owned by Waller Perrow, and changed the name to Drifters. But Walters and Westfall don’t see it as a new chapter; rather, they are continuing the tradition, which is why only the name will change. “We have learned so much from Waller and the way he does business,” Westfall said. “He has always been a huge proponent of doing good business and integrity. We’re definitely the same, so we’re always going to be true to ourselves, do everything we can to serve the guest that come in here, and give them that same experience.” The restaurant had its opening day June 20. There are around 21 returning staff members from last year, and the menu will still be the same.

Due to state guidelines concerning COVID-19, the restaurant opened up with limited seating, but Drifters has plenty of outside seating, which helps the local popular restaurant seat more people while still following protocol. For those that have never been to the restaurant, the menu features all kinds of options such as quesadillas and nachos, salads, tacos and wraps, burgers, crab legs, and more. Westfall noted that two of their notable dishes are 50 cent shrimp specials on Sunday, and anyone can order as many as they want. The other one is chocolate barbeque, which Westfall described as barbeque sauce with a very light chocolate base to it. She said the name might not sound so appealing, but it’s a popular choice among the

customers who have tried it. With a smile, Westfall mentioned that all of this began about two years ago, when Perrow joked with the staff by asking them if they wanted to buy the restaurant. That joking statement turned out to be a reality for the couple. “We kind of joked about it to each other at first,” Westfall said. “But the more we thought about it, the more we thought we could actually do this.” The couple then bought the restaurant from Perrow on June 5. Westfall said that her and Walters have always had an “entrepreentrepreneurial spirit”” about them and they always had plans to run a business together, but they weren’t sure of what path to take. “Finding the path to take was the challenge for us,” she said. Both of them are not new to the restaurant business. In fact, they are very familiar. Both actually worked for Perrow at the once named

Waller’s restaurant and have a combined seven years’ experience, with both being on the management team the past two years. Westfall said the years of working at Waller’s helped both of them build a “a strong love” for the restaurant, and she mentioned that during her time as the bar manager, she always told people how showing up to work is like “hanging out with 200 of her best friends.” Both have always had a passion for their restaurant industry, having spent many years in the business and at multiple restaurants; now they will get the opportunity at the seasonal restaurant. Why the name Drifters though? Westfall said they were looking for something that fit with the lake environment around the restaurant. “You know, Ryan and I are not the most creative people,” she said with a little laugh. “But coming up with a name, we really wanted something that kind of had that lake vibe, and Drifters fit that description for us.”

White House Corner Store provides a one-stop shop for visitors, community By William Seidel

Summer is here, which means more people who fish are dusting off their fishing gear and boats in preparation of the long days out on the lake with friends and family. However, what if they need a backup plan in case they need more food, snacks or forgot to bring a part of their fishing gear? White House Corner Store, a local grocery/convenience store located at 11674 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway in Huddleston, can meet their needs. Hours include 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. General Manager Tamara Waldo said it’s like a one-stop shop not only for people heading to the lake but for the community in general. Waldo has been the general manager since January. The store also has two grocery managers for the morning and night, plus a deli manager. Open since 1983, White House Corner Store features all kinds of products and essentials. In the food category, their deli meat and cheese products come from Boar’s Head; foods such as chicken salad, hot dog chili, cole slaw, steaks and hamburger meat are ordered from a local company out of Evington called Pride of Virginia.

If a customer comes in and wants to buy something for lunch or dinner, they have a wide variety to choose from. These food choices include cold subs, fresh fried chicken, pizza, cheeseburgers, corn dogs, hot dogs and hot wings. White House Corner Store has dine-in space and offers takeout. Waldo said that local residents and visitors also have the option to call in and do a special order in their deli department. “If you want to special order in the deli, we’re here to help,” she said. “If you have a big family coming in, or you’re getting a reunion together and you need, say, 100 pieces of chicken, then just give us a call ahead of time.” Citizens may also find a good combination of Hershey brand ice cream, frozen food and meals, lots of beverage options, produce products, and typical snacks and accessories that they will find at any gas station/convenience store. Waldo said they are always open to try and bring in products that the local residents suggest to them. “We talk to local people as to what they want in the store and then actually search for those vendors we use to find those products,” she said. “We strive to provide as many groceries as we can at all different price points to have values for family with different budget levels.” Waldo said that at any time, if anyone has an interest in a product that is not currently on the shelves, to please give her a call and she will happy to work with them to try and bring it in for the local residents. For those that love to fish but left some of their fishing gear or they need to have something replace, White House Corner Store has a section of the store dedicated to fishing gear and supplies. Waldo said that is one section of the store that she pays close attention to when it comes to citizens voicing their opinion on items or accessories they should carry. Simply put, the White House Corner Store has lots of necessities for fishers and citizens to choose from. With restrictions starting to ease up and families starting to get out more, Waldo and the rest of the management said they are ready to see the business get back to it’s normal busy routine and to interact with a lot more of their local residents.

New SML mural goes mobile By William Seidel

Local artist Lisa Floyd, who has been a fine art and commercial artist at SML since 2004, spent around eight hours working on a new Smith Mountain Lake mural, but she couldn’t decide where she wanted to take this project. After she painted the lake with the businesses on the side, she noted it looked sort of like a postcard, but it still felt incomplete to her. Then she got the idea to post a big SML on the mural. “I would add something, then I’d fill it out, then I add a little more, and it still didn’t feel right,” Floyd said. “Once I put the SML on, it was done — it was great.” Now that it was complete, she unveiled the new mural between Smith Mountain Lake Coffee House and the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce building in early July. She said the main reason for this mural was a promotion to help promote the lake through social media. After creating the mural, she got the idea to make it a mobile mural. Which means every week, the SML mural is featured at a new busi-

ness that’s around the lake. “A bunch of people said they want it displayed at their business, so I’m very excited to do that,” Floyd said. She encourages everyone to go see the mural, take a picture of it and post it on their social media pages with the tag #MobileMuralSML. If someone were to type the hashtag name in the search bar, they will see a list of posts by folks from all over featuring the new mural created by Floyd. She also said that for those who aren’t able to see the mural in person, she will take a picture of it and create prints to sell. A previous project that Floyd is known for is creating an SML pirate treasure map, which features the entire lake but made in a treasure map format. Floyd has always had a passion for using her artwork to help the lake community and she wants to continue that especially during the pandemic. She hopes the mural can help bring more people out and promote businesses in the lake area.

For Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy (SMLCA) graduate Payton Yanok, taekwondo has become a way of life for him. Starting at age 6, he has been in the martial art business for over a decade. Now, at the age of 17, Yanok is a second-degree black belt and teaches at Roanoke Taekwondo America (RTA) at the Tanglewood Mall in Cave Springs. For those that know Yanok’s family personally, they will be the first to say that it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that Yanok has been in the martial arts business for so long even at a young age. His mother, father and little brother are all black belts in taekwondo, so many people may think that Yanok was grandfathered into taekwondo and martial arts in general. Yanok noted that that’s not entirely true. “I’d say it has less to do with experience and more with trial and error,” he said. “I kept trying new things until I felt God sort of assured me that I was in the right place.” Yanok said he tried out a lot of things when he was little. He recalls how he played other sports such as basketball, football and baseball, and mentioned while he had fun playing those sports, he never felt the “peace he feels” doing taekwondo. In the middle of his first year doing taekwondo, Yanok received his white belt, which is the first belt one can be awarded doing taekwondo. The moment Yanok got his first belt is a moment he won’t forget. “I was so giddy. I would wear it around the house, sneak it to school, etc. All the things a kid does when he’s truly excited about something,” he said. “That held the record as the most defining moment of my life until I found God in my mid to late teen years.”

From there, Yanok spent countless hours on his craft. Putting in the extra hours after practices, working with his friends and family, and other ways to help him get better at taekwondo. Believe it or not, Yanok will tell anyone that it wasn’t the thought of getting another belt that drove him to work harder, rather he just wanted to be the best wherever he went to. “I don’t think it was ever the color belt I had that drove me to want to excel. It was more the compulsion to be the best,” he said. “I’ve been killing myself at home as of late, because it’s always been my goal to be the best martial artist in any given room I walk into. An impossible goal, I know. But that’s why I made that my goal.” Yanok said he personally made that goal for himself just so he can always have something to work on, as there is never a finish line in sight for him. “I don’t want a ceiling for my skill to reach,” he said. That type of attitude helped him reach his goal of obtaining his first black belt. Yanok said the process to reaching his first black belt from his previous belt was in a span of two years, and he claimed it was a “difficult” process. “I had boards that refused to break, a banged-up knee, throwing up before testing, and 5’9 12- year old that tore up my back to the point that it is still damaged today,” said Yanok. “I’ve killed myself to get where I am today, and I wouldn’t change a single bit.” When someone has the mindset to be the best at something and are serious about it, a lot of sacrifices have to be made. Yanok mentioned he wasn’t involved with much of anything during his time at school

and during his high school days at SMLCA. Outside of his school work and attending church, Yanok spent a lot of his time at RTA. Not only does he still enjoy doing taekwondo at RTA, but Yanok said he has made a lot of friends that he considers family at the school. “That place gave me direction, an opportunity to be good at something,” he said. “It’s a great school. It’s like its own family.” Yanok is currently training for his third-degree black belt and could obtain it as early as September. Many may say he has almost reached the finish line, but Yanok will instantly shut down that talking point. Even though he is a black belt in taekwondo, he is far from being finished. “I’m still at the very beginning,” Yanok said. “I’m just getting started.” He said he has only “scratched the surface” of teaching taekwondo and will soon start on a form of martial arts known as jiu jitsu in the summer. For anyone who wants to give martial arts, especially taekwondo, a try but have their doubts, Yanok said to not fear but rather embrace it fully.

“Do it. Right now. Like, drop whatever you’re doing, and go find the nearest school, and sign yourself, and your children up,” he said. Yanok spoke about how taekwondo specifically has helped grow his relationship with his father “endlessly.” He also said if you walk into RTA, you wouldn’t be walking into the Cobra Kai school from the movie Karate Kid. “It’s your place, sparring people you want to spar, and being as intense as you want to be. We accommodate you. You’re the customer,” said Yanok. Now that he graduated from SMLCA, Yanok will head to Virginia Western Community College to get his associate’s degree, and then he plans to open up his own martial arts gym afterward. Before opening his own gym happens, Yanok will still continue to teach at RTA. If there is one thing that Yanok wants others to know, it’s that he and the rest will be very welcoming and patient with everyone who wants to give martial arts a shot. He promises they won’t regret it. “Taekwondo is a fun way to come out of your shell, get in shape, and on top of that, it’s something to do,” said Yanok. Given the times we live in, we could all use something to do.”

Notes From The River

EQUI AGRICOLA We never had a mule on the farm. Many, if not most of our neighbors did, but we only used horses. Dad said it was because Earl didn’t like mules, but I’m not sure that’s true. Certainly, there were times during his travails with some of the horses we had, that any sane man would have preferred a span of jug-headed mules to our equine marvels. I’m sure the truth of the matter (and the root of Earl’s problems) was that Dad never saw a horse he didn’t like. When Earl came to run the farm in January 1940, he brought his wife Vicey, their personal belongings, a milk cow, a dog, some chickens, a beehive and his horse, “Dan.” His brother, Woody, would soon join us, bringing his trunk and a mare named “Nell.” In the spring, with Dan and Nell as a team, we made our first crop. Dad was in Pennsylvania at the time, proud that his vision of restructuring the old, rundown lands was happening. Earl and Woody worked hard, and in spring, I rode on a little plank seat behind Dan and Nell on the two-horse turning plow, as we fallowed the “12-acre field,” — our best land at the time. When Woody left to live with his newly widowed sister, he sold Nell, even though he returned here nearly every day to work. Why we didn’t buy her is a mystery to this day, particularly since her absence set off years of frustrating search for a replacement. It was a search that really ended only with the purchase of a tractor in 1949. Until then, Earl was faced with the darndest parade of horseflesh any farmer has had to endure. The problem was, in their partnership, Dad was the strategist; Earl, the tactician. This was mostly a good thing except in choosing horses, as Dad’s role then was based on no more than a roll of the dice. He relied too much on “tips” gathered at the office or the “Y.” These invariably sent him off to buy at some Pennsylvania farm

of variable repute. So, a business trip to Harrisburg, or a handball game with a local park stable manager would often result in another nag being shipped to Moneta. Earl must have come to dread the horses that arrived from “off som’ers,” as he would say. The first to arrive were “Smoky” and “Black Beauty.” They represented another curious opinion Dad had formed. He thought it an estimable idea that cousin Harry always kept a team plus a third horse. (There was seldom an idea about horses that Dad didn’t like.) So, for a while, at least, the horses arrived in pairs. Smoky, a grayish gelding and Beauty, a shiny black mare, came by truck at 2 a.m. one day in 1941. It was an awkward time for a delivery, but Earl made the most of it, giving the truckers a bed for the night and breakfast. “They was both jest chaps,” he related. The horses were not impressive-looking as work animals. Smoky accepted the harness without incident, but Beauty went berserk as soon as the collar and hames went on. She could be saddled, for whatever that was worth. Earl put Smoky next to Dan and had a team — at least for one round in the field. The gelding pulled well till he broke sweat. Then it was all over. No amount of beating or cursing would start him again till he cooled — a classic case of a “broken-winded” horse. Beauty, of course, broke at the sight of the field. She was Dad’s saddle horse until the day she rolled over with him aboard. The pair soon returned to Pennsylvania. Our old farm ledger shows they sold for $125, the price paid for them. Maybe they had a money-back guarantee, or maybe — just maybe — it was because Dad bought “Cap,” a tall bay, from the same outfit for $150. How the two-horse plowing and hauling was done that year I forget, but certainly Cap had no part of it. “A crazy heathen,” as Earl liked to remark. Cap stayed around, however, while Edwin “Nub” Ayers tried to break him for work. It was a doomed venture from the start, for as Earl allowed, “Edwin’s got a heap less sense than the horse.” The delay in getting rid of him, however, allowed for delivery of the “colts.” The colts, “Prince” and “Beauty,” came from the Andrew Mellon farm near Ligonier, PA. They were first-class Belgians, who would grow to near Clydesdale size. Prince was an ungelded male; Beauty, a filly. They were chestnuts with white pasterns and blazed foreheads. Trouble was, they were just yearlings and unbroken. Thus Earl was left with four horses, though only Dan was worth his feed. Cap and the colts spent their days lolling in the pasture, then entertaining Uncle Pye at night, galloping past his door at midnight. Pye was given the dubious honor of breaking the colts, one-at-atime at his home near Body Camp. Cap was sold and replaced by a slight, dark roan named “Frank.” Cousin Blanche, who loved to ride him, called him “Lippy,” as his lower lip hung down like a Ubangi’s gone limp. By any name, he failed. Though willing, he lacked strength.

As Earl put it, “He couldn’t pull the skin off ’n a bread puddin’.” So, Frank left, too, but Prince returned from Uncle Pye, a fine, powerful workhorse. Finally, after years of trial and mostly error, Prince stepped in beside Dan, and Earl had the first true team of his own. Unfortunately, Dan finally gave way to age and exhaustion, forcing his sale. It was a sad day on the farm when he left, even sadder when he left his owner, hiked eight miles home and had to be returned. Thank God none of the others ever did that. Dan’s departure forced us to buy a big, black mare named “Nell” who joined Prince successfully until one Sunday evening when she unceremoniously dropped dead. We were sitting on the front porch after dinner. She and Prince were quietly grazing in a lot right in front of us. “Look’a yonder,” Earl exclaimed as the big mare slumped to the ground. We hurried to the fence only to find her dead as four o’clock. Fortunately, Pye had Beauty broken by this time, and she stepped in with Prince, finally completing the team contemplated six years back. We (at last) bought a tractor but kept the team in case the Korean War caused a gas shortage. Of course it didn’t, and Earl took to the tractor like any 60-year-old man would, given the alternative of walking behind horses all day. Then, tragically, Prince went blind. In the summer of 1953, I

used him to haul rocks on a ground slide, then saw this magnificent animal sell for $20 at the Bedford Livestock Market before I departed for Virginia Tech. The story should end here, but it doesn’t. Earl, happy with the march of agricultural technology, was all for selling Beauty, too, but Dad, crushed by Prince’s loss, rationalized the situation by contending, “Earl always liked to keep a horse on the farm.” So, he traded Beauty for a small quarter horse named “Sonny Boy” in 1955. Earl just shook his head. His only use at all was when I rode him during college vacations. Sonny Boy would leave, but others came and went, many of which had their sojourns when I was in law school and out of touch with the horse situation on the farm. Again, the story should end, but doesn’t. When I returned to the farm for good, we were mercifully “between horses,” a condition lasting eight years. Then Dad tried one more time. He bought a mare and her two-year-old filly from a cousin in Vinton. Earl, now 80, glanced ruefully at me when a trucker arrived with “Pied Beauty” and “Beauty’s Blaze.” There’s more to the story, but it happened after Earl, who was always the centerpiece in our equine pantheon. I visited him in the hospital two nights before the morning he died. I can never forget his last words to me. I put my lips to his forehead as he gently squeezed my hand and said, “Tell Frye to get shed of them horses.”

Satterwhite reflects on his journey and experience as a

Will Satterwhite has had quite the journey. The Vinton resident recently was seen on national television participating in the “Jeopardy!” 2020 Teachers Tournament. Satterwhite, who is a high school band and choir teacher at Liberty High School, finished third overall, taking home $25,000. Satterwhite said it was always a dream to participate in “Jeopardy!” “I remember watching ‘Jeopardy!’ when I was a kid,” he said. “We would watch as a family after dinner, and it was always my favorite show to watch.” Satterwhite recalls his first moment doing trivia was when a friend of his in the marching band convinced him to join her on the scholastic bowl team. “It just kept going from there,” he said. Satterwhite then met other trivia lovers in college and the hours they spent together doing trivia helped him realize that he might have a good possibility of being a contestant on “Jeopardy!” He said he actually ended up auditioning for the College Tournament when he was a student at Virginia Tech after taking an online test to be a contestant. His most recent attempt at taking the online test is where the door to his dream of being a contestant on “Jeopardy!” opened up for Satterwhite. However, it came with a lot of waiting and patience. Taking the test back in April 2019, it was a 50-question, 50-category timed test. Satterwhite then got invited to audition in Washington, D.C., over Father’s Day weekend. Being in a room with around 40 other people auditioning, they all took two more contestant tests and then played demo games of “Jeopardy!” so that the contestant search team for “Jeopardy!” can see how well those auditioning could use the buzzers, do a screen test, and see how they could do in a gameplay setting. Satterwhite said the search team then informed all those who auditioned that they were either going to hear from them or their time in the contestant pool will expire after 18 months and they should retake the test again. After months of waiting, Satterwhite’s phone rang one January day. The number Satterwhite read was a California number, but he couldn’t answer right away. “They had told us to watch out for Southern California phone numbers, so when I saw “Culver City,” where “Jeopardy!” is taped at Sony Pictures Studios, I knew it was them, but I was busy and had to let them leave a message,” he said. Satterwhite then gave them a call back when he was free, and the excitement he felt couldn’t be put into words when he realized he was going to be a contestant on his favorite game show. “My heart leaped up into my throat, and I actually teared up a little,” said Satterwhite. He mentioned that there was concern if he was even going to get the chance to take the opportunity, stating that his wife at the time was pregnant with their third child and he was afraid that they were going to want him to come during her due date. Even if that was the case, Satterwhite’s wife told him that he had to go and do it, as it was his dream. It all worked out for Satterwhite, and he was able to go live his dream. When he got there, one thing he learned quickly was how fast-paced ev-

erything was from the get go. He said all 10 episodes of the tournament were filmed in a span of two days, and it was “incredibly fast-paced.” “Everything from the makeup, mics and promos, to the “winner’s circle” interviews, from the actual gameplay, to our official pictures with Alex Trebek — all of it took place in the span of two workdays,” said Satterwhite. As far as interacting with Trebek during his time as a contestant on “Jeopardy!”, Satterwhite said the interactions that someone sees on the show is basically the only times that the contestants get to be around him. “During breaks, he’s working with the stage manager and judges to make sure that everything was pronounced correctly, and that gameplay is smooth. He also takes questions from the audience during breaks, and as expected, he’s very quick-witted,” he said. Regardless, Satterwhite said Trebek was an “absolute pleasure” to interact with, and he was just as intimidating in person as he is on TV. He also said the experience of auditioning and being on “Jeopardy!” was “everything and more,” and mentioned that there were things he learned that took him by surprise. An example Satterwhite noted was how Jimmy McGuire and Sarah Whitcomb Foss from the “Clue Crew” were actually a major part in the rehearsal process and were also the ones that did some of the contestant’s promo interviews. One could say Satterwhite was lucky with the recording dates working around his wife’s due date, but he noted that as soon as he and the other contestants flew back home, that was when everything started to shut down from the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re very lucky to have gotten to do it; I believe they only taped 5-10 more episodes after our tournament before production came to a halt,” said Satterwhite. Even after Satterwhite made it home, he still wasn’t finished yet. For the next three months, he and the other contestant had to keep the results “hush-hush.” He said that was the trickiest part of the whole process, as no one wanted to watch a game show they already know the results to. Satterwhite said a way that helped him keep the results a secret was having weekly trivia night over Zoom with the contestants that he competed against. That’s right, despite them all going their separate ways, they all still stayed in contact during those three months of waiting. As for who won the “Jeopardy!” 2020 Teachers Tournament, the firstplace winner of $100,000 went to Ben Henri, who is a 7th-12th grade vocal music teacher from St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Second place went to Meggie Kwait, a 5th and 6th grade humanities teacher from New York, who received $50,000. When he can look back on it, Satterwhite can remember this as one of the best life experiences he will ever have. Through the uncertainty of being there for his wife’s delivery of their third child to just beating out the pandemic, it all worked out in the end for Satterwhite. “I am so thankful that it happened the way that it did. Getting to represent my community, my school, music educators, and the teaching profession made it even sweeter, and I’m incredibly grateful for the friendships that have come from it,” he said. “If ‘Jeopardy!’ called and asked me to come back, I would be on a plane in a heartbeat.”

By William Seidel Two local women are attempting to kayak the full 500 miles of shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake. They aren’t doing it for fun; rather, it’s for an important cause. Sue Gallagher, 70, and Jane Marvin, 60, are kayaking around SML to raise awareness and funds for abused and neglected children at Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center (SVCAC) in Rocky Mount. Gallagher said she became a volunteer court appointed special advocate (CASA) for SVCAC. “When the judge in a child abuse case asks SVCAC for a CASA, one is assigned, and the judge issues a court order to that CASA in the child’s name, so they may investigate the case and advocate for the child,” she said. “Our goal is to keep these children safe. We write a report for the judge with our findings for every court hearing in the case. We also visit with the child at least monthly.” Gallagher has done this fundraiser before. She said two years ago, she kayaked the lake by herself to raise funds and recruit volunteers for SVCAC. She ended up raising $46,000 and two people became CASA volunteers because they learned about SVCAC through Gallagher’s efforts. One of those who were inspired by what Gallagher was doing was Marvin herself. Before moving here from San Francisco, California, Marvin had actually followed Gallagher’s efforts to kayak the full 500plus mile shoreline of SML. When she moved across the country to SML, she met Gallagher kayaking one day, and that’s where Marvin being a volunteer CASA began. “She had followed my adventure from California and asked me for some information on CASA,” said Gallagher. “The next time I saw her, she was already training to be a CASA.” Marvin, who was a human resource executive for 35 years, said when she moved to SML, she wanted to get involved with helping the community. In her full year of being a CASA, Marvin has helped 16 children with five different families. She said the experience has been a blessing to her and she has learned a lot. She also said that cases are starting to increase, and they will probably see a big spike right around the time the children come back to school, so she feels this fundraiser to spread awareness will be very crucial. For Marvin, she has always loved the outdoors, but she has never been kayaking until recently. She has always loved to hike, camp, do whatever she could outside, but this will be a completely new challenge to her, and she is embracing it. She has been practicing with Gallagher to try and get the hang of it and said it has been a little tough, but it won’t stop her from completing this journey. “Sue has 10 years on me, so I figured if she can do it, then there is no reason that I can’t do it,” said Marvin. In the first fundraiser, Gallagher started kayaking in April at 10 miles a day in a four-mile span with a rest stop starting out. She gradually picked up more energy and was able to do 20 miles a day in a seven-

hour span with no rest stop. She actually finished much earlier than she anticipated. “I expected to go until September, but my last day was June 30,” said Gallagher. With Marvin now joining her, it is yet to be determined how far they both will try to go starting out, but both have expressed confidence in each other that they will improve stamina wise as the journey progresses. Both Gallagher and Marvin stressed that a way to make this next kayaking adventure go more smoothly was to have docks to leave their kayaks overnight or for a bathroom stop. The start date was originally intended to begin in April, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the start date was pushed back to June 20 at SML Community Park. For those who are interested in donating, there are other ways besides finding Gallagher and Marvin kayaking on the lake. Gallagher said there is a donate button on the Kayaking Smith

Mountain Lake for Kid’s Sake Facebook page. Checks also may be sent to SVCAC, 300 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, VA 24151, made out to SVCAC. There will be recognition to those who donate a certain amount. If someone donates $100, they will be given a pinwheel, which is the symbol of child abuse awareness month. If someone donates $500, they will be given a large lawn ornament pinwheel. “We ask those who live on the lake to put them on their docks or front yards,” said Gallagher. The Crazy Horse Marina also will lend a helping hand to Gallagher and Marvin. They have a donation bucket by the cash register and also will hold a kayak/paddleboard poker run to help raise money, Gallagher said. The next event will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 29. The cost to enter will be $20, with the winner getting half the award and the other half going to SVCAC. Children are welcome to join but can’t participate.
