Described as the focal point of the fight against COVID-19 in Northwest Missouri, Cameron Regional Medical Center remains vigilant for a second wave of the virus. The medical staff at CRMC performed hundreds of tests with referrals coming from the state capital as the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged Missouri, taking hundreds of lives since February. “Cameron Regional Medical Center has tested a large number of persons for COVID-19. In fact, they’ve tested more patients for COVID-19 than any other healthcare provider in Northwest Missouri,” said Clinton County Emergency Management Director Blair Shock at the peak of the pandemic. “That is accurate as of [March 26] and I suspect
it’s still accurate. We definitely expect quite a few more cases. We suspect it is in the community in circulation now and we simply haven’t had enough testing to detect it. We believe all of this increased

Cameron Regional Medical Center nurses pose behind signage that someone placed on their campus off I-35. and marketing director, said in May CRMC nurses and doctors tested more than 700 patients across 10 counties with 14 positive tests received since it began administrating tests in March. The decline in infections from the first wave allowed CRMC to reduce the hours of their dedicated COVID-19 tent, the first in Northwest Missouri, from daily to 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Although now out of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Arthur said the hospital still has a battle on its hands in the future. The reopening of Missouri leaves many unanswered questions, but the staff of CRMC remains steadfast. Along with testing efforts to stave off a second wave, hospital staff also aim to alleviate the fears of those holding off

on doctor visits out of fear they may contract the virus. “The team has been amazing with staffing the tent. It was open seven days a week in the beginning. Right now, it’s open five days a week in the afternoon,” Arthur said. “In the beginning, the tent was very busy but around the beginning of this month we saw a drop in people coming by so they changed it from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. We will maintain our diligence. We are open for business and we’re doing everything we can to stay safe. At the same time, we’ve gone through quite a period now and we don’t want people to delay care. They should not be afraid at this point. If they need to see their physician, then they need to see their physician.”

Walnut Medical Clinic is now open following an announcement by Cameron Regional Medical Center

Carol Arthur, Cameron Regional Medical Center Assistant Administrator/ Marketing Director, did not specify on the cost of the new facility but said the 5,200 foot facility will hold 14 exam rooms and with its new location at the intersection of E. Grand Ave. and N. Walnut Street. “I know the buzz in town is the corner of 921 N. Walnut. There is one enclosed (Mosaic) and one just starting. Our building is the one just starting,” said Arthur last fall. “… This will be the future home of the Walnut Clinic, which
will be moving north about two blocks.” Along with 14 exam rooms, the facility will also house multiple staff offices along with a lab, boardroom, nurses station and on-site laundry machines. Arthur said the new facility is by far the largest of CRMC’s 18 satellite clinics. The clinic will be open seven days a week, including after hour care running
from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Medical-care providers will see patients of all ages and incomes. “I’m really excited about getting this going. Once we get into the new building, we will reevaluate and see if we need to expand on those hours or make any adjustments … “We may do some shuffling around and try to free up the building for different purposes,” Arthur said. The facility will serve as a general practitioner, but as employees settle in, she said services could expand.

When to use soap and water, and when to use hand sanitizer
In the wake of the global COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, millions of people across the globe found themselves scrambling for hand sanitizer. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that cleaning hands at key times is one of the most important steps people can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs, there are differences between washing with soap and water and washing with alcoholbased hand sanitizers. The CDC notes that preventing the spread of sickness through handwashing is most effective when people know which method to use when cleaning their hands.

Medical marijuana dispensary making use of vacant restaurant

The new tenant of the former Chinese Chef Restaurant will serve a much different clientele in the near future. With a slew of medical marijuana dispensaries planned along I-35, Besame Wellness will soon call Cameron home and provide a number of medicalmarijuana products to residents. “We have five dispensaries in the region, north of Kansas City … Cameron is kind of a regional service center for that north central area along I-35,” said Jack Mitchell, CEO of Besame Wellness. “We’re very focused on the community, although we haven’t engaged them yet we will. It is important for us to be very visible, a place we can hopefully be a part of that business community along Walnut.”
Besame is the first medical marijuana dispensary to officially announce its intention to open in Cameron. Earlier this year the Missouri Department

of Health announced the approval of licenses for BMD Cameron, LLC at 714 N. Walnut and Shanri-La Cameron, LLC at 1 Baldwin Road while rejecting applications filed by MiSkye, LLC at 2301 N. Walnut and Therapy Harvest Corporation at 700 E. Bryan. “We just closed on the building last week. It’s now time for us to start doing the hard work of building permits and dealing with the city and all of those things you have to do,” Mitchell said. “There is a major regulatory process with the state and the health department. Now that you have Coronavirus, everything is in an uproar.” Another challenge for Besame will be getting flower product on store shelves. Mitchell said medical marijuana must be grown in Missouri and the group Besame contracted to grow their marijuana must also obtain its permit before beginning

operation. “It takes time. The best case, if everything went really, really well, it will not be until July when you’ll see anything on the market,” Mitchell said. “It will be limited for a while until more people can get up and running on the growth side. We will have a pretty broad range of products. We will have flower and all kinds of different edibles, vape cartridges and all of the things you see in dispensaries in a state like Colorado.” Last summer, the city council approved its zoning regulations with the most dividing policy setting a required distance of 750 feet from a school, church or childcare provider. Mitchell said Besame hopes to quickly ingratiate itself in the Cameron community, but first must get the old Chinese restaurant location up to par to service the city’s medical marijuana needs. “This is stuff our people have all dealt with in the past. We pretty much have to gut [the building] and rebuild the entire interior,” Mitchell said. “The is a lot of security, a lot of camera. We will remodel and build a really nice presence interior and exterior … We have to begin a really robust patient education program with a lot of events. We obviously can’t do that now because of the Coronavirus. We have to have an ongoing engagement with the patient community so we can educate people as to what these products do. We just have to get rid of a lot of misconceptions that have been out there about marijuana.”

When to use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Hand sanitizer should not be applied to hands that are dirty or greasy. Hands that become dirty or greasy after activities such as gardening or fishing should be cleaned with soap and water. The CDC advises using alcohol-based hand sanitizer: • Before and after visiting a friend or a loved one in a hospital or nursing home, unless the person is sick with Clostridium difficile (if so, use soap and water to wash hands). • If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol, and wash with soap and water as soon as you can. Children should always be supervised when applying alcohol-based hand sanitizer. When using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, the CDC recommends covering all surfaces of the hands with the product before rubbing hands together until they feel dry, which should happen after roughly 20 seconds. Clean hands can prevent the spread of disease. Knowing which hand cleaner to use in certain situations can be an especially important preventative measure.

Cancer and COVID-19 The COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 caught many people, particularly those in the western hemisphere, off guard. As the virus spread, the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout North America and Europe changed dramatically and seemingly overnight, prompting many to wonder if they or their loved ones were going to get sick. No one was thought to be immune to COVID-19, though many people were unfortunately believed to be more vulnerable to the disease than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions are at the greatest risk of getting sick from COVID-19. The American Cancer Society notes that cancer patients, like groups with an elevated risk of getting sick from COVID-19, must do all they can to avoid being exposed to the virus. That’s because the immune systems of cancer patients,
particularly those in active chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant patients, can be severely weakened. In fact, in March 2020 officials with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center warned that early data from China and Italy, two countries which experienced early and widespread outbreaks of the disease, indicated that cancer patients would be at increased risk of getting the virus.
Are all cancer patients at risk?
Dr. Steve Pergram, the medical director of infection prevention at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said that patients with blood malignancies are most at risk for COVID-19. Blood malignancies include non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. While people with these forms of cancer may be most at risk of getting COVID-19, it’s important to note that all cancer patients,
including those who recently concluded treatment, are vulnerable. Those who concluded treatment should know that the aftereffects of treatment can linger long after treatment programs have ended, and those aftereffects may continue to compromise patients’ immune systems.
What can cancer patients do to protect themselves from COVID19?
Cancer patients should embrace the safety protocols recommended by the CDC, including social distancing measures and limiting direct contact with other people. Seniors in cancer treatment should take advantages of opportunities to limit their exposure to COVID-19, such as visiting grocery stores during seniors-only hours and opting to participate in digital religious services instead of in-person services. In addition, patients can work with their cancer care
