From rough childhood to county teacher of the year
How Swann overcame the odds By William Seidel
F
or teachers, winning county teacher of the year is a big milestone and one of the major highlights of their teaching career. For Franklin County Public Schools fifth grade teacher Anthony Swann, winning county teacher of the year meant everything to him. Swann is seen winning the award in a video shared by Franklin County Public Schools. The video has more than 5,000 views and lots of comments congratulating Swann. In the video, an emotional and surprised Swann was almost speechless, struggling to find the words that can describe all the emotions he was feeling in his big moment. “I am just so honored to be able to serve children,” Swann said in the video. “I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to give children what I never had, and that was the love from male perspective, because I had an absent father.” Yes, that’s right. Swann didn’t grow up in a loving home. In
fact, he didn’t really have a home for most of his childhood. Swann’s mother was an alcoholic and his father did not want to care for him, he said. A memory of his childhood included seeing his mom drunk and being arrested in the middle of the night, and incidents like these were a reason Swann and his siblings ended up in foster care. A young child witnessing moments like that can be hard on them to understand what is happening, but it all became a reality for Swann when he was in the fourth grade. One day at school, while he was in class, social services came to take him away. Swann said that in the moment it happened, he felt embarrassed, hurt, humiliated and was wanting his life to just end. What followed next for Swann helped save him. “My teacher, Mrs. Jerretta Wilson, grabbed and hugged me before she let them take me,” he said. “She whispered in my ear, ‘Anthony, everything is going to be alright.’”

That rare loving moment for Swann help sparked something inside of him, and that was a love for school. From there, his passion for school started at age 11, and Swann said he played school just to escape the trauma of his parents not wanting him. “I played school every single day,” he said. At age 14, Swann had another major surprise. That same teacher that comforted him in one of his lowest moments found him and offered to help him so he didn’t go down the same dark path his parents did. He said she encouraged him all the time to grow up and make something of himself. She stayed by his side the entire way, including college. Swann noted that Wilson picked him up every single day so he could get to his student teaching placement, because he didn’t have a car. It’s been many years later, and Swann still hasn’t forgotten the impact she had on his life. “She definitely changed my life forever,” he said. Fast forward to now, and Swann has been teaching for a total of 13 years, starting in Danville where he taught for 10 years before accepting a position at Rocky Mount Elementary School. He has been nominated a couple of times for teacher of the year, but not once has Swann won teacher of the year at his school, let alone an entire district. He expected the same results for a third time. “That morning I had already had a pep talk with myself. I told myself not to get my hopes up too high due to the fact that other teachers had been teaching in Franklin County way longer than I have,” said Swann. It turned out though, that third time was the charm for him. As the candidates were waiting to hear who the winner was, Swann then saw a video of him teaching his class. It was at this moment, Swann’s heart dropped and he began to cry, as he knew he had reached that major milestone. His struggling childhood, his determination to make something of himself, and his years of teaching and making an impact for children all led up to one of the best moments of his life. “All I could think about was my labor has not been in vain. I thought about how my love for children and the profession did not go unnoticed. I was and still am in awe,” said Swann. He was living the dream of being a teacher, but winning teacher
of the year only adds the icing on the cake for Swann. He said it solidifies the fact that his passion and learning doesn’t go unnoticed. Julie Nix, chairperson of Franklin County School Board, said she couldn’t be more proud and excited for Swann. “Mr. Swann is so deserving of this award. His goal is not only to teach but to serve children,” she said. Nix also mentioned the impact Swann has outside of the classroom, such as forming “Guys With Ties,” which is a group designed to show young men the benefits of manners, respect and kindness. She also said she was so impressed that he took his childhood experiences and turned them into something positive for the students. Swann said it’s all been an overwhelmingly humbling experience for him, mentioning that he doesn’t like to receive praise or attention for what he does — rather he does it for his love to help children. “I have a servant’s mentality. I don’t care what position you put me in. As long as I can serve children, my heart will leap,” he said. “I love serving children. They are my passion and purpose.” If someone were to tell Swann when he first started teaching that he was going to have the same impact on children like his former teacher Mrs. Wilson had on him, he might have had a hard time believing it. Now, 13 years later in his teaching career, Swann is changing lives inside and outside of the classroom. “No one expected me to make it this far in life. It’s as almost as if I’m in a fairy tale,” he said. Never in a million years did I think that a young boy who grew up playing school in foster care would be changing and impacting students’ lives one at a time.” His fellow peers and students love him, and Nix feels FCPS is a much better place with him, saying they are “incredibly blessed” to have him in Franklin County striving to help their children be the best they can be, both inside and outside of the classroom. Looking back at his childhood to where he is now, it’s a remarkable feat that’s admired by many, but Swann says only you can control your own destiny. “No matter where you come from and no matter your background, you can be somebody if you put your mind to it,” he said.

Hardy man can’t use fingers but still writes and plays music By William Seidel
“I’ve found that no matter what life throws at me, music softens the blow.”
T
hat infamous quote was said by author Bryce W. Anderson and can be found on musician Jon Weems’ website. Weems, who is a resident of Hardy, has been playing music for as long as he can remember. His first instrument he learned to play was the piano, and his first memory of it was climbing on the piano bench as a toddler and playing little melodies by tapping on the keyboard. His older sister played the piano as well and taught him some songs to play with her. Those moments were so much fun for him, and it’s when music started to grow even more on him. Some instruments he played during his time in school included trumpet in the junior high and high school band, baritone and trumpet in symphonic band, guitar and bass in stage band, and the snare drum in marching band. “I found the guitar to be my favorite,” said Weems, who at the time was getting ready to write music. Unfortunately, everything changed for Weems. A diving accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury left him paralyzed from the neck down. Weems is now a level C6 quadriplegic, which means he can still use most of his arms, but not his hands or fingers. It was at that point he thought his music career was over.

“I really missed playing after my accident,” said Weems. His creative mind, though, sprung an idea in the middle of his therapy session that brought him back to playing music. While he was being taught how to type a letter with a stick, Weems realized that if he could type letters on a keyboard, then he could play notes on a musical keyboard. He then went and bought a digital recording device and used it to write different sections of a song, one note at a time, and put them all together to form a song. Weems has used this to create lots of content for his YouTube page, which has a variety of songs he created personally. One song, though, touched the lives of many around the community. “We Are All In This Together,” which was posted recently, was shared numerous times on social media. During the pandemic, Weems got the idea to write his local hit. “I wanted to write a song about everything that was going on regarding the pandemic and everyone staying home and maybe feeling disconnected,” he said. “I also wanted to give a shout out and say thank you to the people who were out there helping.” Before it became a hit, Weems was happy with how the lyrics and music turned out for the song. He let a few people listen to it first before posting and said they loved it. What followed was one of the best moments of his musical career. Weems shared it on social media, and it received a lot of positive responses. A humbled Weems was happy knowing the main reason he wrote the song was to leave an inspiring message. “I was hoping it would connect with people,” he said. Weems said he hopes all of his music can do that for people even if the message in some of his songs is lighter than his other songs. As far as what Weems is doing now, it’s the same old song and dance. He had just finished his latest song called, “I’m Only Human,” which he was actually working on before he took a break to write “We Are All In This Together.” While the latter might have been a favorite with many in the community, Weems said this latest one is his personal favorite. “It’s about how we treat others,” he said. He also said he hopes to get more creative with his future songs thanks in part to his new keyboard he recently purchased, which is a new possibility that he is excited about. Whether he writes songs for fun or to have a deep meaning, Weems will write whatever comes to him. Yes, his accident and current condition was the toughest thing life threw at him, but his ability to keep writing and playing music softened the blow for Weems. He will always be grateful and appreciative of the fact he can still do what makes him happy. “I’ve always loved music and being able to create music I can share with others brings me a lot of joy,” said Weems.

SRHS seniors hold special bond
Ready to compete as college rivals By William Seidel
T
hey were close friends throughout school and close teammates on the field together, but now they will be rivals at the collegiate level. Staunton River High School (SRHS) seniors Avery Adkins and Autumn Overfelt will be taking their talents to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Adkins has signed and will be continuing her softball career at Emory & Henry College, while Overfelt has signed with the Wasps’ rival, Ferrum College, to continue her softball career. How they got to this point started when they first met each other and became friends at Goodview Elementary School in Kindergarten. Their friendship soon blossomed into something special when Adkins and Overfelt both started playing softball together as teammates in a recreation league when they were seven years old. From there, the two seniors spent countless hours together. “It was really special because our dads were the coaches,” Adkins said. “We got to spend a lot of time with each other before and after practices, which helped build our friendship even more.” Both have said their first memory together on the diamond was them rotating pitching and catching to each other. All those times practicing that routine led to Adkins becoming a pitcher while Overfelt became her catcher. In softball, a pitcher and catcher’s chemistry are very crucial, and both believe that’s what made their relationship that much stronger on the field. Throughout the years, Adkins and Overfelt played together in rec league, played against each other in travel ball, and then played to-
gether again when they reached middle school. Adkins remained a pitcher during that stretch, while Overfelt became a utility player and played multiple positions. SRHS Head Softball Coach Scott Cisco has coached both Adkins and Overfelt since they were in middle school and saw that both could develop into solid players. “With Avery’s size and strength, we knew she would have the potential to eventually develop into a really good pitcher, and Autumn was always very athletic,” he said. Improving is exactly what Adkins and Overfelt did, as both players played a crucial part in taking SRHS softball to new heights that the program had never been before. Cisco said Adkins helped lead the Golden Eagles to the state tournament the past two years on the mound. He also said that Overfelt turned the corner in between her sophomore and junior year and became a solid hitter in the lineup to spark the offense, as well as to go along with her tremendous defensive skills. According to Cisco, both players improved. However, Adkins and Overfelt will tell you that while they had great coaching throughout their middle and high school careers, both knew that they played an integral part in each other’s success. Ever since they started playing together, both Adkins and Overfelt have always pushed each other to get better, and both will take that mindset to the next level. “Avery helped me during hitting practices by going up against her,” Overfelt said. “She did play a role in why I get to live my dream as a

college athlete.” Adkins had the same type of praise for her teammate as well. “Autumn has helped me to become a better player because she has always challenged me to get better,” said Adkins. “This is something that I truly believe has helped me in my pursuit of playing at the next level.” Yes, both have played against each other on travel ball, but now the circumstances are much different. Sports Spotlight: FCHS seniors end softball career, reflect on memories By William Seidel
F
ranklin County High School softball had promising potential entering 2020. Leading the way for the Eagles were six seniors, and all of them believed that this season was going to be special for their last go around together. Due to concerns of COVID-19, however, the spring season for VHSL was canceled. Two of the six seniors from Franklin County High School, Rachel Barnhart and Sierra Johnson, said losing their senior season was one of the hardest things they have ever had to deal with. Both said that they were looking forward to their final rodeo with their teammates and their final time playing the sport. Now it’s all gone with very few memories of their senior season to recollect on. Johnson’s senior year was supposed to be one that showed grit and determination, as she was coming back from having a labral tear after diving back to third base in a game a couple of years back. After playing on it her sophomore and junior year, Johnson finally decided to have surgery and be 100 percent for her senior year. Unfortunately, what happened to her final year on the diamond was out of her control. “It was heartbreaking,” said Johnson. “I had worked so hard to recover from that injury.” Barnhart had the same emotions as Johnson, saying she was “crushed,” but was quick to note that she was still very thankful and appreciative of her time playing for Franklin County. Even though they won’t have a final season to remember, Barnhart and Johnson will always have the countless memories that softball has brought them. For Barnhart, she has been playing softball since she was 10 years old and said that it had one of the most positive influences on her in her growth as a person and a player.

“The game not only allowed me to meet new people and different places, but it also taught me lessons, respect and discipline,” Barnhart said. Her teammate, Johnson, has been playing since she was seven years old and immediately fell in love with the game so much that she decided to play travel ball at the age of 10. Playing travel ball has allowed her to meet and connect with so many people in her life, and she is very grateful for that. “Softball has given me many friendships that will last a lifetime,” said Johnson. Softball can bring lots of precious memories, and these two definitely have their fair share. Johnson recalls her favorite memory being a wild postseason game against Halifax County. In that game, the Eagles trailed 7-0 after two innings but stormed back to win 14-12. “The team played the hardest we had all year last year,” she said. Contrary to common belief, Barnhart’s favorite memories don’t involve the homeruns she hit or the defensive plays she made at third base — rather the people she shared it with. Her friends made all the long practices or bad games worth it, and that she will always

She explained that there will be points in life where you are going to fail, and softball taught her that you can learn from your mistakes and get better with lots of focus and hard work. With their careers officially ending, Barnhart and Johnson both differ on if softball will be part of their lives moving forward. Sports Spotlight: SRHS seniors reflect on chemistry, ready for life in college By William Seidel
S
taunton River High School women’s soccer team was going to be a young team led by two seniors in Emily Nellinger and Mady Buchanon this year. The thing is, Nellinger has been playing soccer for six years, and this was Buchanon’s first full year on the soccer field. If Buchanon’s name sounds familiar, it’s because she was one of the trio of the Staunton River softball players who had signed to play college softball. That’s right, Buchanon, who played third base for the Golden Eagles, had signed with UVA-Wise to continue her softball career. Why she decided to play soccer wasn’t that difficult of a decision for her. With her softball career still continuing after this year, she wanted to try out soccer. She then started playing on a travel team this past fall and fell in love with the game. She said it also helped that she had lots of support to make the transition from her coaches and teammates, saying they gave her the feeling of a family atmosphere instead of a team one. “Coach Jeff is just amazing,” Buchanon said. “He’s tough on you, but he still makes the game fun and makes you feel like a valid and appreciated player. I also had lots of friends already on the team.” Buchanon noted that they were all very helpful and understand-
ing of her position and said that meant a lot to her. Jeff Daiuto, head coach of the Staunton River women’s soccer team, said not to be fooled by Buchanon’s inexperience, as he feels she was going to make a big impact with her natural athletic skills. He added that Buchanon was a gift, as their region-team goalie was going to be out for the first part of the season and she was stepping in to fill that role. Before the season ended, Daiuto was very pleased with how she was progressing and learning the position. “Mady was working hard. She gained some experience playing indoor and started both of our preseason games,” he said. “She was working hard with Sarah White, our goalie coach, to develop the skills necessary.” Buchanon has made it known that she is still practicing and keeping her softball skills sharp when she heads to the next level. She also plans to major in psychology and criminology at UVA-Wise. For Nellinger, soccer has been a major part of her life, going as far back as elementary school when she was playing on a travel

team. Like Buchanon, Nellinger remembers her first time stepping on the soccer field for the first time. “My first memory of playing soccer is my first practice when I was 10 years old. I remember just standing there on the field clueless as girls raced around me passing the soccer balls to one another,” Nellinger said. “They clearly had been playing since they were really young, and it was very intimidating.” Nellinger explained she was there for Buchanon whenever she had questions, but mentioned she caught on very quickly and was doing an amazing job for a first-time goalie. Being the only senior with experience on the team gave Nellinger the mindset that she had something to prove. She went to every conditioning practice that she could and ran a lot on her free time. Nellinger felt she needed to live up to the standards that last year’s seniors set for

them through their leadership. Assistant Coach Brian Miller said there was no doubt that Nellinger was going to be a true leader on the field this year. “Emily brings a level of maturity and leadership to the team. She has a good heart, and that showed when we were working together in practice and at the preseason games,” Miller said. “That is the leadership that you need in the tight games — someone who has been there and knows how to handle it, to settle the nerves of those that have not been there.” For Nellinger, soccer has meant everything to her. When she was frustrated or upset, she went outside to kick the ball up against her house for a few hours. Soccer has taught her valuable lessons as well, as she is super competitive and always strived to win every game. Soccer humbled her in the fact that sometimes things don’t go your way in life. “My mom always told me, “You can’t win them all Em,” and I would always get so upset about it because I truly wanted to win them all,” Nellinger said. “But it’s true: You win some and you lose some. I believe that transfers over into life as well. Not everything can go the way you want; things happen for a reason.” Nellinger will be attending Lynchburg College, where she will be majoring in psychology and minoring in health promotions. During her time at Lynchburg, she plans to try out for the varsity team but will play on the soccer club if that doesn’t work out. After she is done playing, she wants to move to coaching soccer. “I know I’m definitely not done with soccer. It has been a huge part of my life and I have a huge passion for it,” Nellinger said. Daiuto mentioned that it’s a great thing that Nellinger will still be involved with soccer after high school and college, saying that people let go of things they love when they get older. Both Daiuto and Miller have a lot to be proud of when it comes to Nellinger and Buchanon, and both have said they plan to follow their journeys through college, adding that it’s a blessing to see and hear about previous players and watch them accomplish so much. They believe Nellinger and Buchanon will take the things that they teach, such as perseverance, work ethic, leadership and other skills to the next level and enhance them. If there is one thing both coaches want their senior players to know, it’s how much they love and care about them. “They may not remember the grueling days of practice — but maybe they remember some of things we learned through the process — and remember that someone cared enough not to leave them where they were — but maybe help shape them into someone a little bit better,” Miller said.

Sports Spotlight: Siebler honors G brother, reflects on lifestyle lacrosse brought him

rowing up, Franklin County High School (FCHS) senior Brandon Siebler was dedicated to football. Having learned to play on the gridiron from his father, John Siebler, football soon became Brandon’s favorite sport. He spent many days and countless hours playing the game with his dad and his older brother, Bo Siebler. So, what changed? Siebler actually had a connection to lacrosse from within his family, and he’ll always remember his brother Brad, who died April 22, 2008. “When I was very young, my brother, Brad, lived in Washington, D.C., and played lacrosse for his high school, and I have always had memories of him visiting us and me playing lacrosse with him,” he said. Yes, Siebler played lacrosse sparingly, but it still didn’t overtake football as his favorite sport to play. It wasn’t until his sixthgrade year when it all changed for him. Siebler mentioned that one of the classes he was enrolled in had a bunch of his friends who were already playing lacrosse for the recreation league and figured if he was wanting to give the sport a try, then now was the perfect time.

Siebler will be attending Methodist University.
That decision led to life-changing results for Siebler. “Personally, to me, lacrosse has turned into a lifestyle,” he said. If someone were to look at how his schedule changed when he decided to put down the pig-skin and pick up a lacrosse stick, they won’t have a reason to doubt him on that statement. Siebler spent his summer and fall seasons playing lacrosse with Duke’s Virginia Lacrosse Club. During the winter season, he was training with both the travel and high school teams, and then he continued by playing with his classmates at FCHS in the spring season. That was Siebler’s life for six years, but his hard work didn’t go unnoticed. In fact, it was far from unnoticed. Over 20-plus division three schools, six division two schools, and a division one school were recruiting Siebler to come play for them. The division two schools that were recruiting him were Wingate University, Lees McRae College, Davis and Elkins College, Limestone University, Mars Hill University and Wheeling University. The division one school that was recruiting Siebler was Mount St. Mary’s University. Believe it or not, he didn’t decide on Mount St. Mary’s or the six division two schools. He chose the division three route, and will be taking his talents down to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to play for

Methodist University. What made him decide on a smaller school? For Siebler, it was all mostly about staying close to home. “A ton of my decision to play lacrosse at Methodist was based around location. Many of the schools recruiting me were seven hours or more away from home, and I could not see myself being that far away from where I grew up,” he said. FCHS Boy’s Lacrosse head coach, Tyler Poage, believes Siebler was going to be a great asset to whichever school he went to regardless. He spoke about what he constantly saw from Siebler when he coached him in practice and during games. “When he plays with confidence, he is the best player on the field,” Poage said. He added that Siebler has meant a “tremendous amount” to the program in ways outside of his playing abilities, noting that he is always respectful of his teammates and coaches. Poage pointed out that he has been a great role model for the younger players as well. When he looks back on it, Siebler still can’t believe how the game of lacrosse has impacted his life, especially when he first tried out the sport. “Never knew I would be at the point I am now,” he said.

Local centenarian celebrates By William Seidel
O
n a beautiful Sunday in May, Elizabeth Webster, who lives at the Runk and Pratt assisted living facility, didn’t think she was going to have anything special done for her 100th birthday, a milestone very few people reach. Afterall, due to COVID-19, or coronavirus, guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prohibited guests to come into the assisted living facility. That was until a nurse told her that she was going to have some guests stop by and wish her a happy birthday through the side glass door. Next thing Webster knew, a line of 30 cars drove by the assisted living facility and stopped one by one to yell “happy birthday” to her. The nurse accompanying Webster asked everyone who participated what their name was as they drove by, and when they told her, she would tell Webster who they were. Webster spent the afternoon in shock of what was happening. “She had no idea this was going to happen,” said Sue Crane, one of Webster’s nieces. As to how this came to fruition, Crane said a longtime friend of Webster actually helped her set it up. That longtime friend was Rita Thomas, and she had contacted Webster’s sister, Sue Wallace, to offer some help in organizing something to celebrate her sister’s 100th birthday. Wallace then gave Crane contact info for Thomas, and they began planning away. Thomas spoke to staff at Runk and Pratt, and they suggested for the safety of the residents, the staff and everybody else that they should do a walk-by parade or a driveby parade. “People wanted to celebrate, but with the current restrictions of limited contact, the best way to celebrate was to do the drive-by parade,” Crane said. They started planning on April 28, coordinating with the staff in order to make sure that there wouldn’t be any disruption to the staff and residents when the event happened. Emails and texts were sent out to as many people as Crane and Thomas could think of to let them know about the event. Crane said that family from Durham, North Carolina; Gloucester and Woodbridge, Virginia; as well as other family members and friends all over Franklin County came out to join Webster for her big day. She also believes it was a success, as Webster told everybody that it was a wonderful surprise. “The love and connection we share despite the disruption of our lives during this pandemic showed we can and will find ways to celebrate the joys of life,” Crane said.

M
any local business owners in the area let out a big sigh of relief as Virginia businesses were slowly allowed to reopen after Gov. Ralph Northam closed them due to concerns of spreading COVID-19, or the coronavirus. One of the local businesses that benefited is Chaos Mountain Brewing, a brewery owned by Joe Hallock located on 3135 Dillons Mill Road in Callaway, Virginia. They were able to open outdoor seating, then indoor seating with restrictions. But even when businesses were closed, the brewery remained open with their ability to sell and distribute their products online. “We have an advantage to a certain extent because we’re a production brewery,” Hallock said. The brewery also discounted their products online. The only product they could sell online is their six pack of packaged refreshments. He or his employees drive to nearby areas such as Rocky Mount, Westlake and Roanoke each week to deliver the packaged beverage. All customers have to do is preorder online and pick a location and time that is listed, and an employee will meet and deliver an order. Hallock mentioned that the Westlake area “has been fantastic” when it comes to ordering online. “There was one Friday where we delivered 22 orders up there in one day,” he said. While Chaos Mountain Brewery doesn’t serve food, a food truck stops by the business every week to offer a variety of dishes, such as tacos, pizza and sandwiches. Before the pandemic, Chaos Mountain Brewery proved to be a popular spot for locals and visitors to come and have a stress-free evening. These evenings can involve a family relaxing on one of the couches while their children play a variety of games; friends playing free games of pool; or between 100-200 people listening to a local band. Hallock and his employees strive to be a comfortable and friendly family environment, and in his six years of running Chaos Mountain Brewery, he has not had to ask anyone to leave or have any disruptions happen. “We’re not a bar,” said Hallock. “That’s not what we’re trying to be.” Chaos Mountain Brewery also has adjusted its hours with the governor now easing restric-

tions. They originally had to limit hours on weekdays but have been able to increase those hours. As for sanitizing, Hallock and his staff have been sanitizing even before the COVID-19 breakout. “Eighty-five percent of what we do here is sanitizing and cleaning, and the other 15 percent is brewing,” he said. Hallock noted that he and his staff have the mindset that whatever they use, they clean right after it’s been utilized. He said they will sweep and mop the tasting room every day, including foaming down the floors in the brewing area and tanks on Friday. They then squeegee everything out. Hallock encourages anyone who loves to socialize but has never been to Chaos Mountain Brewery to come by one weekend and try it out. “Everybody has a good time,” he said. “We want everybody to have that kind of experience.”

The Dam Grill offers eclectic fare O
pened in February, The Dam Grill in Huddleston provides a year-round eating establishment for the community, said its manager Tara Atchison. The restaurant’s owner, Scott Heath, owns several other lake-area businesses, including Heath’s Waterfront Grill, Moneta Tractor & Trailer and Heath’s Tire & Lube. The menu at The Dam Grill is an eclectic mix, ranging from a teriyaki mahi mahi noodle bowl to parkway poppers (jalapeno peppers stuffed with pimento cheese and bacon), grilled shrimp, wings and hand-tossed pizza. Bar service includes to-go beers, mixed drinks, six packs and bottles of wine. The restaurant is in the process of offering drink pouches, “like adult Capri-suns,” Atchison said, in addition to “wine-cicles.” Bar fare includes “dam nachos” and an “awesome dam burger,” which involves a double stack with the customer’s choice of three toppings. “Everything we do is made from scratch and made from love,” Atchison said. In addition to curbside service and delivery within a 10-mile radius, The Dam Grill currently offers limited seating. The restaurant aims to provide live entertainment at least twice a month. A recent performance was made by local musician Tate Tuck. Atchison said she enjoys being a part of the community and seeing customers happy. The restaurant is run by a team of 18 employees, and The Dam Grill currently is seeking kitchen staff and servers. “My team — if not for them — this place wouldn’t be the great
place that it is,” Atchison said. While the impact of COVID-19 has taken a toll on the restaurant’s operations, “if it wasn’t for this team and our community, we wouldn’t be here,” Atchison said. “Our community has pulled through.” The Dam Grill is located at 6724 White House Road, Huddleston.

iking and going for a walk may seem like the only activities one could safely do during the COVID-19 pandemic, but citizens of Smith Mountain Lake can get their golfing game on. After closing its doors March 24, Hot Shots, located at 13360 Booker T. Washington Highway, has reopened its mini golf course. Known for their state-of-theart mini-golf course and restaurant, Hot Shots, owned by Jeffrey Schott, offers a great time for individuals and those paired in groups. Normally one would pay for one round of mini golf, but Schott made changes to that. Hot Shots started taking hour reservations, with children 12 and under costing $6 an hour and anyone older costing $10 an hour. He added that there is a special for those with a group of 10, who can rent the course for $75 an hour. The best part about the deal is if someone is done with their round of golf but they still have time left on their hour reservation, they can keep playing until their time is up. “They can play as much as they want within the hour,” said Schott, who has owned Hot Shots since 2007. The first weekend they opened, Hot Shots saw a nice flow of people by the hour coming in to play mini-golf. In fact, there was a tournament recently held at Hot Shots to bring people out to participate. SML Rotary Club sponsored the tournament, and Schott, who is a member himself, said the tournament has helped a lot with bringing people out to golf.

He also wanted to inform the public that the putters and golf balls are being sanitized after every individual use, and the same sanitization effort goes for the restaurant that is indoors. Speaking of the restaurant, Hot Shots has plenty of food choices for their customers. These food choices include mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, sandwiches, subs, hamburgers, hot dogs, barbeque and others. Another thing he noted was that Hot Shots is now serving breakfast on the weekends. Schott said he understands the stress and worry that the community is facing, and that’s why he has opened up Hot Shots, so they can have an hour to unwind and have a fun time. Schott also encouraged those that have never been to try it out for themselves. “Come on out and play,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Chamber ambassador spreads love and positivity By William Seidel
“Spreading love and positivity.” That’s the motto that Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce (SMLRCC) Ambassador and social media blogger Jessica Bohn Bishop looks to spread with both of her positions. Known around the area as “J Bohn,” Bishop is a graduate of Radford University with a master’s degree in public relations communications. She has been an ambassador for just over a year, with her main objective being to promote the businesses she is assigned to in the community. Ambassadors are chamber members who volunteer their time to serve, providing mentorship and serving as a link for the chamber. How she got involved with the SMLRCC is what someone may call fate. One day, Bishop visited the Visitor’s Center where the Chamber of Commerce is housed to pick up a few brochures for some visitors who were coming. She then heard some of the questions that were being asked by visitors, questions she knew the answer to. That’s when it all came to her. “I just walked in, and it hit me like a ton of bricks that this is where I need to be,” Bishop said. She said she always wanted to get involved within the community, and this was a perfect opportunity to do so. Before her involvement with SMLRCC, Bishop actually runs her own social media blog called “KEEPin’ Up with J Bohn,” which is a personal lifestyle blog where she promotes living happy through her personalized jewelry collection, women’s clothing, accessories, faith, love of food, travel, décor and all things Smith Mountain Lake, to include the promotion of local businesses. Her social media page has more than 4,000 likes and is constantly having content uploaded almost every day. During the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses had to close or are struggling in response, especially around SML. Bishop knew her knowledge and skills using social media were going to be crucial to help the businesses around the community. In a way, she has combined both of her positions as ambassador and social media retailer into one. By making promotional videos, giving a business

she has visited a personal shout out, or posting a photo of her food purchase at a restaurant, Bishop has done many things to help her community. “Any store in the area that I go to, if they are open, I’m going to go,” Bishop said. “I want to support them right now.” She also said she was very encouraged to see businesses in the area learning ways to promote social media use during these difficult times. An example she gave was Serafina Spa, which started doing their spa boxes on their social media pages. Bishop said that’s something they probably weren’t going to envision had they not sat down and had time to think about it. She said that the free time the pandemic has given business owners has made them become creative to sell their product and come up with ideas to enhance their brand even after these trying times ends.

“Just putting minds together and coming up with creative ideas has been very fun and rewarding,” she said. While she is helping to support other businesses, Bishop noted that she, personally, is trying to give back to the community by doing fundraisers. She sells Stella & Dot products and mentioned that she usually runs multiple fundraisers every year and talked about her most recent one. “My company did a campaign where we gave care packages to COVID-19 frontline workers,” Bishop said. “My customers purchased a care pouch containing four items dealing with skin care. For each pouch they purchased, one pouch was going to be donated to a COVID-19 frontline worker.” She even had customers buy a care pouch and told her to keep it to give to frontline workers, which resulted in two packages being donated. Combining both positions hasn’t been too much of a challenge for Bishop because of how flexible her schedule is running her own social retail site, and she is very grateful that she can help spread positivity and love through it all. On her Facebook Page, “KEEPin’ Up with J Bohn,” the header shows a clear slogan for her business and how she approaches her position as an ambassador and as a social retailer. “My slogan is live and love like Jesus,” Bishop said. “Not just because I believe, but for spreading happiness and spreading joy everywhere.” One thing she will tell anyone is that both of her experiences in helping others, whether it be as an ambassador or social retailer, is that she is blessed to help and connect with so many people. “I’ve met so many great people,” Bishop said. “This is just a great community.”

After a two month wait, Los Amigos is happy to serve dine-in By William Seidel

any restaurants locally have been able to reopen their doors for dine-in service after COVID-19 restrictions were eased. But for one local restaurant dine-in is still new. That restaurant is Los Amigos, which had opened its doors for a grand opening March 16 but was soon forced to do takeout. Los Amigos, owned by Jimmy Santos and Billy Orr, is a Honduras-based dish restaurant located at 434 Crazy Horse Drive in Moneta. It has inside and outside seating, a sports bar with gaming machines, and boat docks for people driving their boats to park if they want to stop and eat. In the beginning, Santos said it had been tough running their restaurant on just takeout alone. “It’s been quite a challenge,” he said. He mentioned that even though it’s been hard, he and his coworkers have managed to keep a positive mind and tried to push through it. As far as what kind of food Los Amigos serves, Santos said that it’s different than any other Mexican restaurant you go to. “It’s more unique,” he said. “For example, most of our sauces are organic, non-GMO and gluten free. That’s hard to find, so that makes us different.” Santos said that typically in a regular restaurant, especially in a Mexican restaurant, they use regular oil to fry their chips, and the tortillas that they buy are regular corn tortillas. At Los Amigos, however, they serve non-GMO corn tortilla and use sunflower oil to fry everything. “The food product you will be eating is very light. You can eat a bunch of food and not feel full,” Santos said. “We buy better quality to provide better quality to our customers.” The menu contains a different variety of choices, such as nachos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas and burritos. All of which is non-GMO, gluten free and organic. They also feature a menu for kids and have a vegetarian section in their menu as well. Customers of age may also take a look at the bar menu, which features margaritas, cocktails, martinis and wine. Customers can enjoy all these choices while enjoying a beautiful view of the lake from eating out-

side or inside. Santos mentioned that customers should expect great food and drinks of their choice but also friendly customer service to greet and serve them. He mentioned how all of his employees work together to make sure all the customers’ orders are met and that they do it with a friendly demeanor. If one is skeptical about that, then all they have to do is look at Los Amigos’ online reviews. There, they will find an abundance of positive reviews about the food and service. For Santos, it’s been a dream come true owning his own business. Having grown up in a third-world country, he remembers his roots and where his journey as a businessman began. “I come from Honduras, and I come from a very poor family,” he said. At a young age, Santos had to find a way to help provide for his family. At a young age, he said he walked all day trying to sell clothes on the streets to earn a little bit of money. Santos said he always wanted to make something of himself and own his own business. Through all the hardships and struggles Santos went through that led him becoming a business owner, he learned to never give up and find a way to make it work. That type of mindset has helped him prevail so far in running his fairly new business during these trying times. “I am the type of person that is very consistent; I like to push forward,” he said. “I don’t give up on whatever situation I’m in. You have to sit down and figure out what is the best course of action.” With restrictions easing up in Virginia, Santos is hopeful that Los Amigos will start picking up soon. Regardless, he still remains humbled and blessed at the opportunity to still be able to run a business. “I’m very thankful,” he said. “We’ve put some much into this business, and we’re ready to see it packed with happy customers enjoying themselves.”

B
eing a conservation police officer allows Sgt. Tim Dooley of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to pursue his passion for the outdoors. Now he gets to spend his first summer at Smith Mountain Lake as a supervisor. Dooley has served as supervisor of DGIF’s District 21, which includes Franklin and Pittsylvania counties, since November. In total, he’s served in the agency for more than a dozen years. Conservation police work is a dream job, according to Dooley. His family was heavily involved in activities such as hunting and fishing, thus nurturing Dooley’s love of the outdoors since childhood. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 2007 with a degree in wildlife science, Dooley’s first DGIF duty assignment was located in Goochland County. He served in that role for about 10 years before his promotion to an assignment in District 24, which includes Farmville. Dooley is originally from the Roanoke area. When the position of District 21 supervisor became vacant and he was able to make a lateral transition into that role, “it was basically like a homecoming,” Dooley said. He currently has five officers that report to him, although there are three vacant positions. According to Dooley, the biggest draw of being a conservation police officer is the freedom that comes with the job. Although his position is primarily one of supervision, “the good part about it is that I still have the ability as a sergeant to do some fieldwork.”
Conservation police officers perform patrols by car and boat as well as criminal investigations, an aspect of the job that Dooley said he especially enjoys. There is a seasonal aspect to the work. In the summer, a lot of time will be spent on the lake, but in the later months, such as during hunting season, “I get to spend time in the woods.” “Then, of course, there is the public service element, and you get to help people that need your help,” he said. “It’s rewarding when you’re able to do that.” Through efforts that include hunter and boating education, there is a significant amount of public outreach involved in conservation police work, he said. In light of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic, Dooley said all of DGIF’s in-person courses have been placed on hold, although online boater education courses are available. “It’s one of the jobs you have a lot of responsibility but you can find ways to get out and interact with people, and it’s very rewarding,” he said. Dooley succeeds longtime District 21 supervisor Lt. Karl Martin, who retired last year. District 22 supervisor Sgt. James Slaughter, who oversees an area that includes Bedford County, filled the District 21 vacancy on an interim basis until Dooley’s permanent assignment into the role. “On a personal note, I’m excited to be home and excited to have the opportunity to work on Smith Mountain Lake,” Dooley said. “... Hopefully the summer will normalize and we can get out there and have the chance to interact with the local folks and enjoy ourselves.”
