All-season Airbnbs OPTIONS FOR EVERY BUDGET

very year, vacationers look forward to their annual getaway to rejuvenate and recharge. Now, with so many rental properties at Lake Anna, it’s easier than ever to find the perfect getaway — all thanks to technology. Since 2008, Airbnb has helped hundreds of thousands of people find short-term rentals all over the world. The company is known for its innovative online marketplace where anyone can find just about any kind of property. At Lake Anna, that means out-of-towners (and locals!) now have an easy way to quickly book the vacation property of their dreams. Property owner Megan Fass uses Airbnb to connect with people looking to rent her waterfront home. “Airbnb has gotten us more exposure to people that wouldn’t have found the rental otherwise,” said Fass. Fass and her husband, Dan, started as renters via the app years ago. Later, they took the leap and purchased their own lakefront property to rent to others. They searched four long years before finding the perfect property — their “happy place,” as they call it. “Our ‘Happy Place’ is just that. It’s a place to unwind, enjoy life by fishing, kayaking, boating, floating, roasting s’mores around the firepit, dinners out on the deck or screen

porch, ping pong, pop-a-shot, yard games, board games, game nights, and quality time with family and friends,” said Fass. A quick search on Airbnb shows that there are currently over 135 properties to rent near Lake Anna. Many of these properties are in Louisa as well as Orange and Spotsylvania counties. These properties range from entire houses to cottages to private rooms and feature state-of-the-art amenities such as contactless entry systems and well-designed theater rooms. Depending on what renters are looking for, many homes offer entertainment indoors and outdoors throughout the year. Summertime is by far the most popular time at the lake, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do in the winter. After spending long days on the water, summer vacationers enjoy playing a game of volleyball, taking a dip in the swimming

pool or relaxing on their rental home’s private dock. Many homes are equipped with WiFi and welcome canine companions. As for what renters are looking for, homeowner and Airbnb host Steve Pazulski knows the rental market well. “Sometimes renters like a pool. While others really like having the kayaks on the property to use. They enjoy amenities for outdoor activities such as basketball hoops, horseshoe pits, fire pits and cornhole, which is now really popular,” said Pazulski. One of the biggest perks of vacationing at Lake Anna is the warm water on the private side of the lake, which creates an extended season to enjoy all the lake has to offer. “Starting in mid-April, water temperatures are great, then in the fall, lake temperatures are good into the third week of October,” he said.

Fass agrees and thinks more people should know about the private and public sides of the lake before they book their rental home. The first time she rented a home on the lake, it was on the warm side, and she didn’t realize the water would be 100 degrees during the summer. “It’s a 15-degree difference on the public side, with water temperatures ranging from 70 to 85 degrees in summer, unlike the private side when water temperatures are typically 85 to 100 degrees.” Another key difference is the public side’s “access to restaurants, marinas and the ability to rent boats,” she said. “The private side (the warm side) is smaller and quieter. Renters can’t rent motor boats as it’s reserved for home owners,” she explained. Either way, renting a vacation getaway is a win-win for anyone looking to unwind. “Since people need to get away ... a drive to the lake that is private without interactions with crowds is perfect,” said Fass. No matter what time of the year you’re traveling to Lake Anna, there’s always plenty to do. Whether it’s spending a day on the water or cozying up by the firepit and watching the stars, Lake Anna is the perfect place to visit. Lake days have

become a lifelong tradition for many families and friends. Whether it’s a secluded oasis or a waterfront private island, Airbnb has an impressive offering of properties with a wide array of amenities at all price points. Virginia Electric Power Company purchased approximately 18,000 acres in 1968 to build the North Anna Power Station and its associated waste heat treatment facility. Lake Anna State Park, located on the Spotsylvania County side of the lake, was the former site of Goodwin Gold Mine. Gold was discovered there in 1829. North Anna Nuclear Power Plant employs approximately 900 people. The plant produces 17 percent of Virginia’s energy needs and powers 450,000 homes. When the lake bottom was cleared in 1972, officials thought that it would take three years to fill the lake. However, the rainfall from Hurricane Agnes filled the lake in half that time—18 months. The 9,000-acre public side of the lake, also known as the cold side, is used by Dominion Energy to cool the nuclear reactor. The 4,000-acre private, or warm side, is used to discharge the heated water from the plant.

Lake Anna is well known for its great fishing and contains more than 30 species of fish. Dominion Energy, which owns the North Anna Power Station, paid the county of Louisa $12.9 million in taxes in 2018. Lake Anna State Park has more than 15 miles of trails, offering many hiking, biking and horseback riding options. Lake Anna is about 17 miles long from tip to tip and boasts more than 200 miles of shoreline. It is comprised of 13,000 acres and is one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in Virginia. The earthen embankment dam that created Lake Anna is 5,000 feet long and 90 feet high. More than 100 individual subdivisions have been developed on the shores of Lake Anna. More than 6,300 carp were added to the lake in 1994 to eat hydrilla that had clogged the waters.

Lake Anna’s growth has been steady over its nearly 50-year history. New residential neighborhoods and commercial centers continue to develop to cater to people relocating from distant cities, weekend visitors and natives of the three surrounding counties. The lake’s restaurant and entertainment scene saw a dramatic upward bump in the past decade, especially on the Louisa County side of the water. Where once there was little reason to venture beyond one’s dockside getaway after a day on the boat, now destinations from The Boardwalk at Lake Anna on the west end of the growth area to Lake Anna Plaza to the east give vibrance to the local scene.

Distinctive new neighborhoods have drawn attention, too, like Sunset Cove, where residents trade away large lots and get increased common space in return, and the long-anticipated Cutalong golf community. Longstanding, large agricultural properties like Elk Creek Farm are transforming into subdivisions before our eyes. The lake is growing up, much as those who helped develop it must have envisioned. We take a closer look here at what a few of today’s visionaries have in store for the lake’s next chapter. Cutalong awaits its unveiling For 20 years, people around the lake have wondered what would become of the large property known as Cutalong, on the

south side of New Bridge Road (Route 208) in Louisa County near Kentucky Springs Road. It has been pitched as the lake’s first golf community, but development has been slow to take off as the property cycled through several different owners. Cutalong’s current managers think they finally have a master plan that can yield success for the roughly 1,000-acre site. They are working hard on the first nine holes of the golf course, designed by Tom Clark of Ault, Clark and Associates. The next nine holes could be completed by this fall, according to Gary Griffith, a lake real estate veteran who is helping sell house lot reservations for owners Stillwater Equity Partners. As for the housing part of the plan, the

developers have scaled down their initial vision from a grandiose 891 new homes to a more modest first phase of singlefamily homes and villas. The latter, which are also referred to as The Cottages, will be rentable on a nightly basis. “What’s different from previous efforts is that we will have more of a resort, familycentric feel,” said Nathan Kiser, Stillwater project manager. Kiser recently relocated to the lake from Alpine, Utah, where his company is based, to oversee Cutalong’s progress. “We’ve seen that be successful elsewhere.” The golf course will be open to the public while the developers build up a core of members for the facility. Kiser said his team also plans to build a marina on the property’s lake frontage with some entertainment options. The marina will be accessible to the public, or “cold” side of the lake. “Dad might be excited to go golfing, but the rest of the family needs a reason to be there as well,” he said. Kiser said Stillwater isn’t making the mistake of its predecessors, who sold house lots to customers before a centralized wastewater system was finished. Griffith is marketing

He added that Stillwater also wants the golf course finished first. The current owners have offered to buy back lots from people who were dissatisfied with what happened in the past, which Griffith called a classy move. Rock Island Landing planned on “rare” property

American Land Holdings, which also helped develop the nearby 112-lot Elk Creek Landing subdivision, is eager to take advantage of the farm’s unique topography. Dan Girouard of American Land Holdings LLC, who is also involved in development at Spring Creek subdivision

at Zion Crossroads, said it’s a special opportunity for the 56 future lot owners. “The views are almost like theatre seating … they get better the further back from the water that you go,” he said. “It’s rare to find a piece of land with the features this one has — the shoreline, the deep water and the gentle slope.” The development will be split between on-water and offwater lots, with water access to the latter provided through

Many of the houses are likely to be modestly-sized, although people who want to build on a grand scale will have that option. “With the market coming out of Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., we’re seeing that people are not looking to build McMansions anymore,” Girouard said. “They want a small, well-built house that’s easy to keep, with no wasted space. The 1,700-square-foot getaway really appeals to a lot of people, or 2,200 square feet with a finished basement or loft.” Next steps for the lake’s commercial growth The Corner, a large commercial development approved by the Louisa County Board of Supervisors last fall, sits at what some observers call Lake Anna’s main gateway, Wares Crossroads. Others call the intersection of New Bridge Road and Zachary Taylor Highway (Route 522) Dickinson’s Store, after the business that has graced this location for a century. Griffith is also involved with this project along with partner Lonnie Carter. They pitched it to county officials as a chance to do commercial development right, with strict design guidelines for buildings and parking lot landscapes. One street in the commercial center will have shops and restaurants situated close to the roadway and sidewalks, with parking relegated behind the buildings. The project is a long-term vision, and isn’t likely to see much activity until the Virginia Department of Transportation completes work on a roundabout to replace the current accident-plagued intersection. Construction is anticipated by 2023. If successful, The Corner will follow in the wake of Griffith’s previous commercial project, The Boardwalk at Lake Anna. That two-phase devel-

Two new water sports outlets opened their doors in the building this spring (see article on page 26). Griffith has plans to build a hotel next door to Tim’s in phase two. Down the road at Lake Anna Plaza, one of the first large commercial ventures on the Louisa side of the lake when it was completed in 2012, there are more options these days for eating out and imbibing. Vito’s, the Italian restaurant that joined Asian Cafe in the building a few years ago, opened an upstairs bar called The Lounge in 2019. Across the parking lot, Louisa entrepreneur Brian Gilbreth and his brother Eric opened Lake Anna Taphouse last summer in the former visitors center. The once-barren and underused green space between the visitors center and

the water’s edge is now alive on weekend evenings with outdoor dining, cornhole and a fire pit. Meanwhile, Cooling Pond Brewery on Route 522 and Coyote Hole Ciderworks on Oak Grove Drive are making their own beverages and offering frequent live music to entertain visitors on their informal

and scenic outdoor patios. Not to be outdone, Michael Kavros, proprietor of Callie Opie’s Restaurant on Route 522, has built a new barn for weddings and live music. It’s an exciting time on Lake Anna, a still-young community with a rapidly changing residential and business scene.

By Joseph Haney If you’re looking to spend a day on Lake Anna this summer, there are a couple of new businesses on the Boardwalk at Lake Anna that can help provide water activities for you and your family. Mid-Atlantic Water Sports is a pro shop that offers a variety of watersport vehicles and equipment from boats to jet skis to wake boards to fishing gear. Their motto, according to manager Steve Harler, is “to bring the lake together.” “There’s lots of different types of people in the lake community that keep to themselves,” he said. “Fishermen don’t talk to wakeboarders, wakeboarders don’t really talk to jetskiers ... Our goal is to bring them together whatever [their] love of the lake is.”

Plans for a grand opening event for the store were put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting stay-at-home order. A virtual opening was held through Facebook on April 28, which sparked an “outpouring of support,” according to sales manager Steve O’Britts. Harler says that they are planning to have a formal grand opening event as soon as the stay-athome order and ban on gatherings of more than 10 people are lifted. The shop sells boats, including Lund, Centurion and Supreme brand watercraft, and equipment for a wide variety of water sports. They also have a service department to repair and maintain boats and other equipment located on Jefferson Highway in Louisa. The department is run by Austin

service, Mid-Atlantic Water Sports also offers rentals for people who just want to come spend a day or two on the lake. Currently their fleet is small, consisting of four boats and two jet skis, but Harler hopes that, once stay-at-home order is lifted and the weather gets warmer, he’ll be able to expand. One of the store’s most popular items has been ZUP boards, which are all-in-one boards which can be used by people of all skill levels for a variety of watersports. Currently, Mid-Atlantic Water Sports has sold out of their inventory. “People are buying them for their kids, which really shows how water-sports neurtral the lake has become,” Harler said. The second business providing water-based activities for people to enjoy on Lake Anna is LKA Watersports, owned by Duane and Susan Adams. Reminders about the certification requirements are featured prominently on the business’s website, just to make sure people remember to do it. “Lake Anna is a fun place to be, but you have to be very respectful of it and careful with it,” Duane said. “The more you bring it to people’s attention, the more it stays on the front of their minds.” Because a certification is required beforehand, they prefer that potential customers reserve equipment in advance to have time to complete the certification if they need to and to ensure that the jet skis and boats are available. With both businesses located at the boardwalk, it provides a central location to enjoy a day on the lake and a meal, the combination of which puts both businesses a good place for families on vacation to spend a day. “We want to see people enjoy the lake, come here and enjoy a local business and just have a good time,” Duane said. Lake Anna Winery is a local, family-owned winery. Fishing Tournaments on Lake Anna By David Holtzman

Fishing tournaments have been an attraction at the marinas on Lake Anna for decades. The tradition will continue this year, though the coronavirus has caused delays in the start of the spring and summer round of competition. Sturgeon Creek and Anna Point marinas plan a robust schedule of tournaments in 2020 while practicing social distancing. Sturgeon Creek has started a Friday evening event, inheriting it from Highpoint Marina. Chris James has managed the Lake Anna Elite Series at Sturgeon Creek since 2003. His grandfather, Lewis “Campbell” Edenton founded the marina in 1972, shortly after the lake’s construction. “With so many private clubs now, people can fish anytime, so the tournament size has gone down. But the number of people involved has gone up,” James said. James launched his Youth Series in 2003 for youngsters 16 or under and added the Elite Series for adults about a decade ago. The competitions have alternated over the years between his facility and Anna Point Marina, which James said first organized tournaments in the early 1990s. Most competitions kick off in early morning and wrap up by early afternoon, when the traffic tends to get heavy on the lake and the heat has ramped up. Carlos Wood, manager at Highpoint Marina, said uncertainty about the coronavirus led him to cancel fishing competitions at his facility this year after a 26-year run. “We cherish the memories and friends made along the way,” Wood said. “We didn’t ever have the tournaments to make money, it was just to try to bring more people to the business.” He said most of the people who take part in tournaments are coming to the lake anyway, although he recalled a couple of fishermen who traveled to the lake specifically for the event from two hours’ drive away. At Lake Anna, dock signs are in use to make your time on the lake safer. Almost 500 waterfront homeowners and common

areas have installed these signs to help boaters identify their exact location on the water. In an emergency, boaters can use the yellow signs to tell a 911 operator exactly where they are. In the example at right, the first letter means “Louisa” and the second letter means “downlake.” All dock signs are linked to the 911 street address so resources can be dispatched without delay.
