New church building offers more space, features By William Seidel After two and a half years, construction on the new Eastlake Community Church has officially ended. Construction started in September 2017, as the first steps were tearing sod off the ground. The physical building construction then followed a year later in September 2018. The long wait has come to end, as the 54,000-square-foot building on Hendricks Store Road in Moneta, which takes up 162 acres of land, is ready for service. The pastor of the church, Troy Keaton, expressed that this building is for the community to help those in need. “We built it to strengthen the community,” said Keaton, “We’ve said this all along; we’ve built it for more space and community impact.” As far as space goes, Keaton noted that the old building seats 280, but the new building seats 1,000. There also are new features for citizens to enjoy at the church. “The main area, which we call the mall area, is going to be open to the public seven days a week,” said Keaton.

“It’s going to have Smith Mountain Lake Coffee House,” he said before it opened. “They are opening a store here, and it will be open seven days as well. There will be a Christian Resource Center, where you can buy books and so forth, and we will have the fastest internet of Smith Mountain Lake.” Although the building is complete, services have been made available online due to the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic. “We’re living in unprecedented times, so we’re not focused on having church in here right now,” said Keaton. “We’re focused on helping people.” Keaton pointed out that at a service held in March, there were 422 people there on site at the old building, but they had 3,500 listeners online. With a lot of places being closed and a lot of people not being able or wanting to leave their homes, the number of online listeners grew. With the reality that the new church building didn’t have a grand opening to the public when it was completed, Keaton has said that’s not what matters right now. “It is frustrating in a very shallow human level, but we got over that real quick,” said Keaton. He continued, “What we see it now is an opportunity to help people. This is the philosophy of our church, and that is we’re not building a building, but we’re building an impact.” Keaton said that his church has never been about the number of people that come but making an impact in the community, and he believes God has set them up to prove it. “We’ve been saying all this stuff for years, and now we get to see if we really mean it,” said Keaton. “God has given us this incredible opportunity to help the community and we want to do that,” he added. “We have to make sure that we’re faithful, diligent and we’re smart in this moment to be able to help the community.”

New effort lends churches a hand with recording By William Seidel After completion of the new Eastlake Community Church, Pastor Troy Keaton decided to help out other local churches. Some churches have had trouble having their services because they couldn’t have service in person due to the limit of no more than 10 people set forth by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, or they just don’t have the equipment to live stream. Keaton went to Facebook Live and announced that others churches are welcome to use their studio equipment. He noted that God placed it on his heart to do it and mentioned some stories in the Bible about the situation. “The Lord said to Moses and to different others, what do you have in your hand? Moses told the Lord that he just had a staff, and the Lord showed him that staff can be used,” said Keaton.

With the realization that the church building could not open its doors for an in-person service due to the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic, Keaton mentioned that’s when God spoke to him about how the building can still be use. “I woke up a couple of weeks ago Thursday morning real early, and I just sensed the Lord telling me to get up and make an announcement on Facebook,” he said in late March. “So I got here around five after seven and put my phone up on Facebook Live, which I never personally do.” The announcement mentioned to all churches that if they don’t have any other way to communicate with their people, they can come record at Eastlake. Keaton said that there have been multiple churches interested and scheduled, noting that they had three scheduled within two hours of the announcement. He said that if a church is interested, all they need to do is call (540) 297-0966 and say that they would like to record, and Eastlake Community Church will schedule it with its technical staff. The major reason for Eastlake to do this is because they are more concerned with the big picture. “We are far more concerned about the big Church of Jesus Christ than we are our little Church of Jesus Christ,” said Keaton. “It’s really our heart to serve the greater body of Christ, not just our own local congregation,” he added. “This is just what we have in our hand, and we’ve been blessed to do it.”

By William Seidel With families mostly stuck at home, many wonder when everything will get back to normal. Coronavirus, or COVID-19, news is not so positive, leaving some discouraged. For some positive and uplifting news, Pastor Troy Keaton and Worship Leader Ben Peak of Eastlake Community Church started a daily show that is featured online. The show, called Eastlake Live, features Keaton and Peak in a 30-minute online show that brings information and inspiration to the Smith Mountain Lake Community. Keaton has done plenty of preaching sermons online, but this is a new setup for him. “We’ve never done this before,” said Keaton. “This started because of COVID-19.” Keaton said the show features information regarding COVID-19, and they trying to inspire people that are sitting at home and not in the best of moods.
It demonstrates variety of things, such as a segment of good news that features some of the best uplifting news Keaton and Peak can find, humorous videos, singing from Peak, and Keaton speaking for a few seconds or minutes about God’s word and how the community can get through this. Both have made it known that this didn’t happen just to do something new, but they wanted it to be for a positive leverage for the community in the midst of the negative effect of COVID-19. Despite the format right now, Peak has said the show could still see some changes. “Every day, it’s evolving,” said Peak. “Some things are very thoughtful and planned out and other things are last minute where we say, ‘Hey let’s try this.’” The show starts at 10 a.m., Monday though Friday. In order to listen to the show, the online show is featured on Eastlake Community Church’s Facebook page and the Eastlake Community Church app, which can be found in any app store. It can also be found on their website at www.eastlake-church.com.
Old African American school building turning into chapel By William Seidel Now that construction on the new Eastlake Community Church has been completed, the church shifted its focus on its newest project. An old and abandoned school back in the early 1900s for African American children, which sits right down the road from the new church building on Hendricks Store Road in Moneta, will soon become a new chapel. The old school building was uplifted in March and taken to its new location. It sits beside the cemetery that is near the church, which goes back to 1803. Pastor Troy Keaton noticed the building for a few years and did research on it. That’s when he found out it was a school for African American children back in the early 1900s. Keaton then went into detail on what he found in his research of the abandoned school. “Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington created a foundation to educate black children, and they created around 5,500 schools for children all across the south,” said Keaton. “This school wasn’t built by them, but it was a part of that movement and wave of education,” he added. According to preservationvirginia.org, back when the schools were built, they went as far north as Maryland and as far west as Oklahoma. The site also mentioned that most of the schools “fell out of use after the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education 1954,” which ended school segregation. The building was then used as a store, a pool hall and other services before being completely abandoned and left sitting for years. The first thought for the abandoned building was to move it beside the church and renovate it into a wedding chapel, but that’s when the church discovered the cemetery that is near them. “We found the cemetery that goes back to 1803, and we said, ‘Why don’t we make it into another monument right beside it?’” Keaton said. “There are actually civil war soldiers in that cemetery, perhaps even slaves, and we’re trying to use it as a form of unity to bring people together.” The church has plans that the building can be used as a prayer chapel and for burial services. Renovations for the building have started, and the church is hopeful it’ll be a much quicker project this time. Keaton gave a hopeful timeline when renovations would be finished. “I hope to have it done by mid to late summer,” said Keaton. As far as what will be in the newly renovated building, Keaton mentioned one thing the church hopes to do. “We hope to make one wall the history wall, and we’re collecting photos, so if anybody in the community has history stories, photos or information,

Keaton made it clear that he hopes this chapel will bring the community closer. “There has been a lot of segregation in the south, and there’s been lot of racism in the south,” said Keaton. “We’re trying to bridge that gap. We have an African American community right here in our neighborhood, and we are very blessed to be their neighbors.”

Bedwell and Foutz hold on to memories By William Seidel Franklin County High School Girl’s Lacrosse Coach Amy Dwyer always has a lot of good things to say about her team. For two of her five seniors specifically, Madi Bedwell and Holland Foutz, Dwyer couldn’t have enough to say about them. “Holland is a leader, I talk about her positivity, but it is something to behold because you cannot be around her without rubbing off on you,” said Dwyer. She continued, “Madi has one of the biggest hearts, she is the backbone of our team when it comes to support. She is always there with an encouraging word for everyone.” Dwyer noted that these attributes will bring Foutz and Bedwell great success in their futures. For the two seniors, losing their senior season has been frustrating and hard to grasp, but they still try to set an example for the underclassmen. Like Dwyer mentioned, Foutz has shown her leadership through these trying times. “I have been trying to keep in touch with the girls on the team, and I try to encourage them,” said Foutz. “It helps me to remain positive knowing that they are all OK.” Having played for a total of eight years, Foutz said that lacrosse has taught her many valuable life lessons. She said that the sport has helped her learned to adapt to

changing circumstances. During her time at FCHS, they have had a different head coach every year. Yet through all the turmoil, they still remained a team. While she has many great memories of playing at FCHS, Foutz said her favorite memory was winning the conference title against Cosby High School her freshman year. Foutz will attend Longwood University, where she will major in criminology. Bedwell, on the other hand, has played lacrosse for six years. Like Foutz, Bedwell has had many great memories paying the sport, but the one thing she will miss are the friends she has connected with. “I have made so many friends since I’ve been
playing lacrosse, and they have been a big part of making me into the person I am today,” said Bedwell. “It’s going to be really hard saying goodbye to them.” She will remember how she never took a game for granted, saying she was always able to take it all in and just enjoy having the opportunity to be playing the sport she loved with her teammates. Bedwell will attend Liberty University, where she will major in athletic training. Although their careers were cut short, both Foutz and Bedwell expressed how they will always be grateful for their time at Franklin County and playing lacrosse for the school. “It has meant a lot to be able to represent FCHS by playing the sport that I love,” said Foutz.
Bedwell had the same feelings as Foutz about her experience paying for FCHS. “It has meant the world to me to be a part of such a close team/program,” said Bedwell. “I wouldn’t trade my time or memories with Franklin County lacrosse for anything.” As far as the impact both have made on the program, Dwyer said that they have always helped her bring a positive attitude to the field. She said both have left their impact in more ways than one, and that they will always continue to help her strive to help build the program for the future. “Their energy and enthusiasm will keep me driven to grow this program in the hope of creating more opportunities for the youth in our community,” said Dwyer.

Davis and Kelley demonstrate leadership By William Seidel
“Strong and solid team players.” — Those words came from Franklin County Girl’s Lacrosse Coach Amy Dwyer when describing two of her senior players, Isabelle Davis and Ainsley Kelley. Dwyer noted that both of them were dedicated and mentioned how they were major contributors on the field for her team. “Isabelle is on the draw majority of game time; she has great communication with her teammates on the circle and really worked to hone her skill on ball placement off the draw,” said Dwyer. “Ainsley plays attack and has a stealthy presence on the field; she works hard and gets in the right place at the right time. She’s just tenacious.” Dwyer also said that Kelley was one of the toughest players she has coached, stating how she played in a scrimmage this year after having all her wisdom teeth removed four days prior. Davis and Kelley were among many seniors in Virginia and across the country that have lost their final season of playing the spring sport they love. “I was flooded with sad emotions when the season was canceled. I could not stop thinking about the fact that I would never step on my high school game field ever again,” said Davis. She mentioned that she has tried to remain positive by remembering everything lacrosse has given her throughout the years and how she has so much to look forward to in her future. She also said that it’s important for younger teammates to never take practicing or playing on game day for granted, because it won’t last forever. As far as her future goes, Davis will be attending the University of Alabama and will be part of their equestrian team. She will be majoring in physical therapy. Kelley, like her teammate, said losing her senior season was really hard on her, but she has to remember that being a leader is important during these times. “It is upsetting, but all of the girls not graduating still
need motivation from us seniors,” said Kelley. She said that the team is still engaging by messaging through the GroupMe app to check in on each other. She also said that the team has been using another app called Snypr, which only tracks wall ball. The app allows lacrosse players to keeps count of how many reps they do with the exercise. Kelley will attend Ferrum College and will work on her general education while she decides what to major in. Both Davis and Kelley have played lacrosse for 10 years, and both have said playing for Franklin County has meant so much for them. “Playing Franklin County lacrosse has been a huge part of my life since I was in second grade. I have met so many great teammates that still remain as great friends along the way,” said Davis. “It gave me a way to feel stress free for a few hours and to stay active, while working hard to pursue any goals I may have had.” Kelley had the same feelings as her teammate. “Playing for the Franklin County lacrosse has meant so much to me, I am blessed to have had the opportunity to represent my school and community,” said Kelley. “Through this experience, I have grown as a person, and I have learned how to motivate and work with others. This might not be the last time Franklin County girl’s lacrosse will see a Davis and Kelley on the same team, coach Dwyer said, as both of them have little sisters that play lacrosse. “Ainsley’s twin sisters will be freshmen next year, and both made the JV team this year as eighth graders. Isabelle’s sister is a little younger, being a rising seventh grader, but we will see her with us in two years,” said Dwyer. She mentioned that both Davis and Kelley mean the world to her, and she is excited to keep tabs on their progress for a few years through their sisters.

Mohler ready to prove herself at college level By William Seidel
In most cases, college athletes usually start playing the sport they were recruited for at a young age. In the case of Franklin County High School (FCHS) senior Julia Mohler, her lacrosse career didn’t start until her junior year of high school. “I found lacrosse through friends mostly,” said Mohler, who will continue her lacrosse career at Bridgewater College. She said once she decided to play, she was trained under Justine Button, who is the head coach for girl’s lacrosse at Virginia Episcopal School. Mohler said Button took her under her wing and taught her stick skills and ball control. The training under Button kept Mohler interested in playing lacrosse. William Seidel/Lake Life

FCHS Girl’s Lacrosse Head Coach Amy Dwyer took over the position this year and was not able to spend much time coaching Mohler, but she was still able to see very quickly in that short time the potential that the now college-bound athlete has. “Julia has a great number of attributes that make her a coach’s dream,” said Dwyer. “Julia is extremely athletic, works hard to stay on top of her game, listens well, is able to execute new plays quickly, very coachable and always shows up to practice with a great attitude ready to work.” Dwyer is a coach that will push her players to their full capabilities and always challenge them to work hard and improve their skills. Even during this coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic, Dwyer is still finding ways for her players to stay active and practice. That type of coaching mentality had Mohler, who plays defense, excited for a full season under Dwyer. She mentioned that Dwyer has that rare quality of pushing her players but showing lots of love and support at the same time. “She has taught me many useful things on and off the field. I believe that would have continued this year because of her amazing coaching ability and her ability to connect with the team,” said Mohler. “She is so supportive of all of us on the field. This season was going to be hard because she is always pushing us to get better, but it was also going to be a lot of fun. I believe I would have developed many good skills, both life and lacrosse, from her this season.” Having only played one full season, Mohler mentioned she had a lot of work to do to catch up to respectable speed with her teammates. She noted that she went to summer and winter clinics at VES but also worked on her skills at home. Mohler said she had one of her family members outside with her to play catch when she first started, and then drove to the high school to play wall ball to work on her skills herself. Outside of lacrosse, she worked on her conditioning by enrolling in a strength and conditioning class at FCHS to work on her speed and strength. Mohler also said her teammates, especially former seniors from last year and current seniors, took it upon themselves to show her the ropes. She said the process helped her grow closer with the current senior class and mentioned Holland Foutz by name as one of the seniors who really helped her grow as a player and leader. Mohler will be attending Bridgewater College and is still un-
decided on what she will be majoring in but has her sights in the physical science field. While that process isn’t stressful for Mohler, the recruiting process, on the other hand, was a different story. “The recruitment process and deciding on a college was a very stressful experience,” she said. “By the time I decided I wanted to play lacrosse in college, some schools had already ended their recruiting for my class. I went to a few prospect days anyway just to hope to get some exposure and talk to some coaches to hear their opinions about if they thought I could play.” Going to those prospect days ended up helping Mohler, as that is when she was able to get in contact with Bridgewater Girl’s Lacrosse Head Coach Rachael Bragg. The process for Mohler then got much easier for her, as she was able to bond with the team and fell in love with their team atmosphere, stating she was impressed with how well they could work together as a whole while still having fun playing the game. Mohler knows college will be a difficult transition and will require more work and determination, but she is up for the challenge. She said that it will be a tough process because it will consist of a lot of hard work and dedication, but said if you put in the hard work, success will come and that will lead to great memories and opportunities. “My goals for playing college are to work hard enough and improve enough to contribute to the team and to make nobody question how long I have been playing,” she said. If there is any high school upperclassman that wants to play a sport they have never played before, Mohler is a great example that it can be done. Another thing she said is that it’s very important to always stay positive, because there will be lots of growing pains and learning curves, but it will all be worth it in the end. It’s been a crazy ride for Mohler ever since she picked up a lacrosse stick, and she never dreamed she was going to be in this position a couple of years ago. “When I stepped on the field for tryouts on day one, I was not confident I would even make the team,” she said. “As a junior trying out, I had to make varsity, and I just was not sure that was going to happen. At the time, I never even dreamed about playing in college. Even after last season, I did not think it would be possible. It’s amazing knowing that I get to continue playing in college since I just started playing.”

Deaton Brothers share unique coach-player relationship

Staunton River High School (SRHS) has experienced siblings playing together numerous times. This brother duo, however, is a bit different. Assistant Head Coach Chase Deaton and his brother, senior midfielder Seth Deaton, have always shared a love for soccer. Chase Deaton noted that it’s always been competitive between the two even before they were paired up at SRHS, and he credits that to Seth watching his two older brothers play while he was younger. “Oh yeah, there’s plenty of competition,” said Chase Deaton. “It’s fun being competitive with Seth because he grew up watching Shane and I play, so he wants to be better than us always.” Seth Deaton noted that it was extra motivation for him to work harder at his craft to be the best. “Obviously both of my brothers playing before me pushed me to work harder,” said Seth Deaton. “I always wanted to be the best player out of us three.” Did the hard work pay off? Chase Deaton will be the first to tell you so. He noted that Seth is three times the soccer player he ever was, but he said that bragging about his little brother’s work ethic. Chase Deaton said his parents bought them little four-foot goals when they were children, and to this day Seth still goes out and uses them to craft his skills. Soccer teaches a lot of life lessons, but for Seth it taught him to always strive to get better. “Soccer taught me hard work and patience from a young age,” said the multi-sports star. His hard work and drive could also be in part to how hard his brother pushed him outside of practice. Chase Deaton saw his brother’s athletic potential and how it could help him get a scholarship. “The biggest thing I always tried to get him to understand is that his talent in sports could really help him out in terms of his education,” Chase Deaton said. “I didn’t just push him athletically; I always pushed him academically.” The hard work paid off, as Seth Deaton will be taking his kicking talents to the next level, but not to play soccer. Instead, he landed an athletic scholar-

ship to be a kicker at Virginia Union University. One of Seth Deaton’s main highlights on the gridiron was a 50-yard field goal last season. Even though he will be moving on to play at the collegiate level, Seth Deaton said that missing his senior season of soccer was one of the saddest moments of his life. His brother was right there to remind him that despite the setback, he will still go on to do great things and reminded him of the progress that he has made personally and with the team. “These guys went from losing nearly every game for a few years and then all of a sudden made a run to the region semifinals,” said Chase Deaton. As far as getting the opportunity to coach his brother, Chase Deaton said it’s been incredible to watch him grow over the last few years and watch his little brother amaze him still with his skills. Seth Deaton knows not everybody gets the opportunity to have a sibling be their coach on the high school level, and he will always be grateful for that. “I will remember being lucky enough to hang out with my brother every day and for him to get to see me work hard at something he’s always loved,” said Seth Deaton. Chase Deaton has the same feelings and is excited to see what his little brother will go on to do in college and the rest of his life. “I don’t know if I could put into words how proud I am,” said Chase Deaton. “He’s made so much progress as a student, athlete and young man.” “I’ll cherish all the memories we had together,” he added. “Spending time with my brother and watching him grow has been a great pleasure, and I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do next.”

Weaver and Craghead leave their mark as leaders By William Seidel
Although their season ended early, Franklin County High School Softball still has a lot to be proud of, and that includes two of their seniors who will be playing softball at the collegiate level. Seniors Breanna Weaver and Katelyn Craghead played softball together for years and will now continue their careers on the next level. Their head coach, Bryan Forbes, knew both players had college potential and said they worked throughout the years to get to that level. “Both players showed skills when first entering as 7th graders, but their hard work has led them to the opportunity at the next level,” said Forbes. Weaver and Craghead said losing their senior season will sting for a while, but they take comfort in knowing their careers aren’t over. As far as college careers go, Weaver and Craghead knew they wanted to play at the collegiate level when they started playing softball as kids. “I grew up playing traveling softball along with playing for Franklin County. I always watched college softball on TV and have had the opportunity to attend games in person, and it is something that I have always wanted to do since I was little,” said Weaver. “Now that I am accomplishing that goal, it is heartwarming.” Craghead had the same mindset as her teammate. “I have always wanted to be a college athlete since I started playing softball. Through a lot of hard work and dedication, I felt that my goal was reachable when the recruitment process started,” said Craghead. “I have been fortunate enough to have had many great coaches that has helped get me to where I am today.” Weaver has signed to play at Ferrum College and pursue her degree in physical education. She said she had her eyes on other schools such as Ro-
anoke and Mary Baldwin but knew when she went on a tour at Ferrum that it was the place for her. Craghead has signed with Roanoke College and will pursue her degree in elementary education. She, too, said she had her eyes on multiple colleges but knew Roanoke was her home, as the coaching staff left a great impression on her when she was being recruited. Although they lost their senior season, both Weaver and Craghead have said that this season has taught them to never take anything they do on the ballfield for granted. They also believed they have left their mark on the softball program by trying to be leaders and help prepare the younger teammates for the varsity level. Both will be college rivals to each other when they go their separate ways, but they have said they will never forget the memories they made with each other on the field at FCHS. Both were very successful on the high school field, but how will they do at the collegiate level, though? That is hard to say now, but Forbes has no doubts. “I think both will be successful as they both have continued to work on their skills and conditioning,” said Forbes, “I think Breanna will have success due to her ability to play multiple positions, while Katelyn will succeed due to her hitting ability.” Weaver and Craghead have had Forbes as their coach for a few years, but they will be the first to tell you that he was a major part in helping them get to the collegiate level. “Coach Forbes pushed me very hard during practice and games because I felt he saw potential in me,” said Craghead. “He puts a lot of time and dedication into the FCHS Softball program; he has helped me become a better ball player.” Weaver also had the same gratitude to her high school coach. “Coach Forbes helped me grow into the player

Both Ernandes and Niederhauser have actually been involved in the food business since they were teenagers, and both have developed a strong passion for it. “I’ve cooked my entire life,” said Neiderhauser. “I love customer service and just serving people.” Both will tell you that their time working in a corporation restaurant atmosphere is where they learned their skills of hosting, waiting and preparing food. Ernandes said her time working at Red Lobster has always stayed with her to this day. “I was training for two weeks at Red Lobster before I even waited on a table,” said Ernandes. “They made sure I was prepared, and I had it all memorized. I still take an order the way I was trained to at Red Lobster.” Ernandes always makes sure that her waiters and waitresses have the
same mindset to always have great customer service, and she always keeps a close eye to make sure their staff is being efficient and their customers are being satisfied. Old Oak Café, under its normal schedule, is typically busy and sees a packed house of customers. Yet, they never seem to have that long of a waiting time for those who come in with no seating available. Ernandes will tell you that a major way for a restaurant to stay the course through a packed restaurant is the meal prep. “That’s the key,” said Ernandes. “When we’re slammed out on the floor and in the kitchen, saving three seconds on an entrée over the course of a four-hour shift makes a huge difference.” Examples she gave was having portion sizes of hamburger meat done and ready to be grabbed and put on the grill, or the shrimp is already peeled and ready to go, and other little things to save precious seconds back in the kitchen. Ernandes said all those seconds add up, and every second counts in the restaurant business. Both Ernandes and Neiderhauser have always had a passion to serve others, even before the opportunity to run their own business came up. The former owners of the Old Oak Café wanted to sell the restaurant, and Neiderhauser said that when both her and Ernandes decided to buy the restaurant together, they had a game plan ready to go to do this and have done it since without looking back.

Old Oak Café had seen some struggles before Ernandes and Niederhauser took over. However, both have said that there have been some trying times for the Old Oak Café recently. Like many businesses, it has been a tough time for many restaurants during the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic, and they have been trying everything possible to keep their doors open. Due to the state banning dinning areas, Old Oak Café temporarily changed their hours to Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. They also temporarily changed their menu as well, concentrating on just serving lunch and dinner. Ernandes said customers have been trying hard to help their business by ordering takeout and still supporting their business. Niederhauser also noted that the virus has decimated their way of life running the Old Oak Café, saying that before this happened, they always looked forward to serving and talking to their familiar and new customers. “Our customers are like our family,” said Niederhauser. “It’s just devastated us.” Both of them said, like anybody else will tell you, that they have not seen anything like this. They both said they’ve been here for almost 10 years and nothing in the past can come close to this situation. “It’s like a snowstorm every day …” said Ernandes. “The only time we would have a slow day for our business would be if it snowed and everyone was indoors.” The Old Oak Café does run specials once in a while, and Ernandes said they will continue to do so. She said that they recently held a special on turkey and dressing, and they completely sold it out.

and more. Pastries made at SML Coffee House — including gluten-free and keto desserts — are handmade. SML Coffee House also has teamed up with Lexington Coffee Roasters to supply their fresh-roasted coffee beans, Homestead Creamery for their milks and ice cream, and Boar’s Head for their deli meats and cheese. The business has done so well in the short time that it has been opened that the Grays have expanded their main restaurant to hold more people and have added a new location within Eastlake Community Church. The Eastlake Community Church location offers beautiful scenery of the mountain views while relaxing in a grand foyer. Like the main restaurant, there is free WiFi for customers to access. The main restaurant at the Bridgewater Plaza offers more beautiful scenery, as customers can enjoy their coffee and food out back on the balcony and experience a view of the lake. What makes the Bridgewater location unique is that not only can you get there by car, but you can also get there by boat as well. Both places are ideal locations to hang out, visit friends, or just get away and enjoy a variety of delicious products while enjoying the scenery that both places offer. When asked about how the new Eastlake Community Church location came to be, Kevin Gray said the church’s pastor, Troy Keaton, approached them about the possibility of adding their restaurant in the new church building. “We were excited,” said Kevin Gray. “Pastor Troy’s vision goes along with ours, and that is to help others and to bring people together.” Construction on the new SML Coffee House location ended recently, but the store wasn’t able to fully open due to the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic. The new location started by opening Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and beginning May 5, the Eastlake Community Church location was scheduled to be open Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They plan to be open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. once the pandemic is over. The SML Coffee House inside Eastlake Community Church features many of the same coffee drinks, teas, fresh pastries, muffins and bagels that will be offered at the other location. The church restaurant also will feature a little special treat dur-
ing church service. “There will be free drip coffee, and a coffee bar for people to make their coffee the way they want it during Sunday and Wednesday services,” said Sara Gray. What did the main restaurant change in light of COVID-19? Kevin Gray said his wife planned ahead with using disposables and take-out only before it became the norm for all restaurants. “Sara has been very proactive with everything,” he said. “I was hesitant to shut down the seating area of our restaurant, but she told me that shutdowns would be coming, so we need to be ready for the changes.” Sara Gray mentioned that customers who order curbside pickup online get a 10 percent discount if they enter a code. The code for the discount can be found on the SML Coffee House website. They also mentioned that they always gave a 10 percent discount to first responders before the pandemic but are now offering a free cup of drip coffee for first responders and medical workers to thank them for their service. Both said that business is usually slow in the wintertime, and that is what the pandemic feels like — a prolonged winter season. They also said that they keep the restaurant clean and sanitized constantly, and that the staff is wearing both masks
and gloves when they are on shift. Despite the trying times, the Grays have said that their customers have been amazing with their support. “We just appreciate the community so much, because they have been very thoughtful,” said Sara Gray. “They’ve been very generous with their tipping, buying gift cards, supporting our curbside service, just making it a point to eat local. We love and appreciate them so much.” Kevin Gray also wanted to give credit to their staff. “They’re just amazing; they were given the opportunity to work or not during this time, and many have chosen to keep working,” he said. “They are happy to come to work each day and have adapted without complaining. We have been very fortunate to have a staff like this.” From where they started a year ago, to where they are now, the Grays are still amazed at how well their business is doing and evolving before their eyes. Both have said they give all the glory to God, and would not be where they are without him. The Bridgewater Plaza location is at 16430 Booker T. Washington Highway, Moneta, and the Eastlake Community Church location is at 1201 Timberwood Lane, Moneta.

From accounting to hearing aids
McArdle recounts journey to SML Hearing By William Seidel Owned by Lisa McArdle, the SML Hearing Center has been in business for almost five years and is known for its cleaning and service of all brand of hearing aids, as well as caring, cleaning and servicing them for free. The story behind how McArdle started her journey as a hearing aid specialist is not what one might expect. A typical path may be going straight to college after high school and pursuing a career in the hearing aid field. Believe it or not, that’s not the case for McArdle. “I was working in an accounting office, and I had just one day stumbled upon a newspaper ad with a job opening,” she said. That job opening? It was a telemarketer position for a hearing aid-specialist located in Newport News, Virginia. During her time there, not only was she doing the telemarketing position she was originally hired for, but she also was being trained under the hearing aid specialist that hired her. So, one could say, McArdle was doing two jobs at once. She has worked in the Newport News and Chesapeake area, but she has made it known that she plans to stay in the Smith Mountain Lake area for the long haul. Patients will see right away that SML Hearing is a place that cares deeply about them. When they walk through the door, they are met with greetings, smiles and a determined hearing aid specialist to help them. McArdle also admitted that she, herself, wears hearing aids — one in her right ear since 2009 and another in her left ear for six months. She says this has allowed her to really connect with her patients on a personal level on what type of hearing aid they need. She will be the first to tell you that her top priority is making sure her patients feel that they matter, and she always tries to find the best possible solution for them. The customer then returns the hearing aids and has an appointment with McArdle to discuss how well they work for them. From the business side, McArdle mentioned the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic has affected their business, but they have made changes to combat the negative effects. “We offer curbside, so a customer can pull up front and call us; we go out to get their hearing aids and bring it back in to clean and service and bring it back to them,” said McArdle. She noted that SML Hearing allows patients to come in for their appointments, and she has made the adjustment of a time interval of 30 minutes to an hour between appointments to avoid customers coming in contact with each other. McArdle also said that if a patient needs something for their hearing aids but are hesitant to leave their house, she will mail it to their home free of charge. She also said that she has given her employees a pay raise and is paying them for time off to help their families.

As far as sanitizing and keeping the business clean, McArdle said she is taking every step necessary to keep her patients and employees safe during these trying times. She mentioned that anything that has been touched by her, her employees or her customers is being sanitized and said that the business is sanitized before they open every morning. She also has put a barrier over the check-in counter to ensure more safety to her staff and patients. She believes this is something that they will continue to do even after the pandemic. “This has taught us all a lot,” said McArdle. “We want to keep everybody safe and healthy. Our patient’s health and hearing are our number one priority.” From working in an accounting office to now being a trusted hearing aid specialist, McArdle can always look back and be blessed with what her career has done for her. “I cannot imagine doing anything else, I love what I do, and I love my patients beyond words,” she said. Making a difference at SOUNDZ HEARING

By William Seidel Hearing doesn’t just affect the person — it affects their family and friends and how they communicate with each other. Timothy Bratton knows that all too well. He and Veronica Bratton operate Soundz Hearing at Smith Mountain Lake, a hearing care provider that provides complimentary hearing evaluation and appropriate hearing aids for patients. He said he’s been in this business for more than 20 years and still gets the same feeling of happiness knowing he is able to help change lives. He encourages anyone who needs help with hearing to give his office a call or email to set up an appointment. “We love our patients, and that’s what it’s all about,” he said. “We don’t want them to leave without hearing.” Veronica Bratton noted that it brings both her and Timothy so much joy and happiness to see they are making a positive difference in their patient’s lives. She mentioned that patients have told her that being under Timothy’s care has brought life-changing results to them. Veronica Bratton also said that their patients get a hand-written thank you letter from her; and anytime Soundz Hearing gets a new patient who was referred to them from one of their regular patients, they send the regular patient who referred them a thank you letter as well. She said those are just little ways to show their patients that they love them and are so grateful for them. Bringing happiness and changing lives for a person and their families is what Timothy Bratton strives to do, but how exactly did he get involved with helping others in this field? ton loves to mention that relates to his work field. The infamous quote is from renowned blind and deaf activist Hellen Keller, who said, “Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people.” Why is that quote so important to him? Because at the core of that quote lies a message that reminds him why he chose to be in this career field. Timothy Bratton decided to be a hearing specialist because of his mother and sister, who both have their struggles from hearing loss. When he saw first-hand just how hard it can be on a family to communicate with a loved one with hearing loss, a door to a new lifestyle of helping others opened in front of Timothy Bratton. He knew that’s where God called him to be — to help his loved ones and to help bring communication and hearing back to others and their families. “Hearing problem isn’t just a patient’s problem — it’s a family problem,” said Bratton. He said it’s not just good for the patient to have hearing aids, but those communicating with the patient — meaning the person with the hearing loss doesn’t have to worry about conveying the message to his family and friends, and the family and friends don’t have to stress about trying to understand what the person with hearing loss is trying to communicate to them. You might have heard of the phrase, “You just have to experience it to know how it feels.” Well there is something about Timothy Bratton that you might already know, which is the fact that he also wears hearing aids. Veronica mentioned that it has helped him connect with his patients on a more personal level. “He knows exactly what his patients experience when they are in environments that make it more difficult to hear and understand, which helps him know exactly how to help them,” she said. As for how the company has been impacted by the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic, Veronica Bratton went into detail about this. “We treat the population who is most at risk,” said Veronica Bratton. “It’s affected our patient’s ability to come see us.” She noted that while new patients need to have their first visit at the office, existing patients that need service can opt to have an at-home treatment. Timothy Bratton said that this type of service has always been offered and isn’t something they decided to do recently. Veronica Bratton also said that patients can come to their building and have curbside treatment with their hearing aids. Timothy Bratton followed that statement by adding that patients don’t need to get out of the car, as they will take care of it. “We go out there to get the hearing aid, bring it in to change the dome, change the filter, change the receiver, whatever it takes to make sure it’s working,” he said. “We just bring it right in, fix it, and bring it back out and never touch them.” When asked if there have been new business decisions to help combat the negative effect of COVID-19, Timothy Bratton noted that they have put thought into it but want it to be in favor of their patients. One example he said is offering $500 off a pair of hearing aids. Veronica Bratton explained they have the ability to make remote changes and do telehealth appointments through their HIPAA complaint platform. She also said that their patients are like a family to them and they will still continue to love and support them despite these tough times. She noted that Timothy always calls and checks in on all their patients to see how their hearing aids are working and if there is anything he can do to make them better. Both of them said that their business’ biggest asset is word of mouth and how they will always be honest to all patients about their situation and what will be best for them, noting that honesty and getting it right for their patients is very important to them. They also said that they follow guidelines and sanitize wherever a patient has been or has touched, keeping track of everything that needs to be wiped down after it’s been used. Despite the hard times people are facing recently, customers can still enjoy themselves at The Cottage Gate, which features a wide variety of merchandise including home décor that changes with the season. The department store, owned by Allen and Twila Tolley, also has a gourmet section, which is stocked with different types of jams, peanuts and seasonal candy mixes for dock appetizers. Ladies can enjoy themselves in the ladies’ boutique section, which carries clothing, shoes, jewelry and purses. Customers will find a baby section that features newborn to toddler clothing, educational toys, puzzles and books. In the middle section of the store, you will be able to find a section dedicated to Smith Mountain Lake merchandises. This includes shirts, sweatshirts, signs and more. Allen Tolley said they also have all types of puzzles, card games, family games and more for families to enjoy together while they are stuck inside. “We have all types of toys for all ages, and we have board games from ages 2 to adults, so we have something for everyone,” said Allen Tolley. He said they also have new hummingbird feeders and hummingbird food so that families can be entertained by birds when outside. The store carries other outdoor merchandises such as wind chimes, flags and lanterns. The Cottage Gate brings in new merchandise every month, and the month of May features plenty for customers. Some of the new merchandises are new

games for the family to play at their home or on the docks; new summer clothing for women such as summer tops, hats and sandals; and newly stocked T-shirts and caps that men can check out. New nautical home décor also has hit the shelves at the Cottage Gate, such as lamps and wall art to add personality to your living area. If you’re someone who likes to relax on your porch or dock, the Cottage Gate has new acrylic wine glasses and freezable wine glasses to help make your relaxing experience better. The coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic has brought some challenges. Although the small department store is still open, the fear of the virus being around the area has left many residents to take extreme caution about being outside at any store or restaurant. Having been through the recessions, Allen Tolley mentioned this situation is a whole new animal that they and many others are facing. If customers still feel uneasy about being in public, they can call in advance, and the Tolleys will let them get a better view of the merchandise by doing a virtual tour of the store. If any customers choses to come in the store, they have nothing to worry about. The Tolleys said that they have been implementing the six-foot rule and keeping up with the guidelines of having no more than 10 people in the store at once. They also have had the doors open during store hours to prevent anyone from touching the door handles. Allen Tolley mentioned that the internet has been vital to help the business, and brought up the Facebook page, We Shop Local SML Virtually, a page to help the local businesses. Created by Gavin Hager, it is “a place for the public to promote local small businesses by spreading the word about available goods and services at Smith Mountain Lake,” according to the Facebook page. Allen Tolley noted that thanks to Hager’s idea, they can get product information out there to their customers who are having to stay home and gives him a lot of credit for helping the local businesses. The one thing Allen Tolley wanted to make clear is that they want to help any and all customers during these times to make shopping at the Cottage Gate easier and less stressful. “We’re still here, and we’ll be happy to assist you in any way we can,” he said. Notes From The River

TEETH The general tone of writings often portrays life in the River days to be more pleasant than it often was. The good times we recall is what we most remember, as it’s a human characteristic to shut out, or at least mostly forget, the bad. How else could we live with death and sorrow? One subject that was barely tolerable in those days was the condition of our teeth. In today’s modern dentistry, teeth are usually saved through regular check-ups and cleaning. Getting a cavity filled is certainly no big deal, while root canals and caps are fairly routine. Even extractions are anything but the traumas of the older times on the Road. Moreover, tooth care is so prevalent that dentists are usually in short supply. It wasn’t like that before 1940, save the fact there were hardly any dentists at all. My memory of community mastication was false teeth, few teeth or no teeth. The situation was owing not to just a dearth of dentists, but a widespread ignorance of proper tooth care. In 1901, Booker T. Washington wrote concerning the toothbrush “that there are few single agencies of civilization that are more far-reaching.” It was a wisdom that would take nearly 40 years to reach the River. Few, if any, of the people around me in my youth owned a toothbrush; nor did many have a full set of their own teeth. Uncle ’Lonza didn’t have a tooth in his head, and never had any false teeth. Earl had one incisor on top, one below. Woody was snaggle-toothed, missing a lot of front ones, whatever his molars might have been doing. Their brother, Charley, had some missing, but also some gold teeth that showed he was taking some pains to retain what he could. That was Dad’s program, too, with vengeance. Like Char-
ley (who was his age), he started tooth care too late in life, and spent the rest of his days trying to catch up. He must have spent thousands of dollars on dentistry in his latter adult life on caps and bridgework, only to succumb at last to “China clippers.” It’s rare today to see someone missing teeth — all of them, at least. In the River days it was rare to see someone beyond 25 years with a full set. Yet, to see people with no teeth at all, was in no way uncommon. Indeed, some had lost their teeth so early that their gums were not sunken, and they were masterful at the practice of “gummin’ it.” Everett Tuck was one of these; he could eat fried chicken, even corn on the cob with his gums. Others weren’t so skilled. Vicey always cut Earl’s corn off the cob for him, but he always remarked that it wasn’t as good that way. He could still remember the taste you get by biting it off and getting the root of the kernel. Tom Jeff Blankenship and Hub Nichols were toothless and they looked it. I could understand Hub’s speech well enough, but Tom Jeff’s articulation was abominable. His brother, Will Blankenship, had false teeth, but only put them in to eat! When at his meals, his entire appearance was altered. No one knew why he took them out otherwise. On the other hand, Harry Ayers wore his teeth all the time and had actually worn them down. Beyond appearance, and the varying difficulties eating — I once watched Uncle ’Lonza spend five minutes gumming a jellybean — was the discomfort and outright pain of rotting teeth. Until 1940, there were no dentists except in Bedford City and Rocky Mount. Dr. Sam’s brother did have a little dentist office next the doctor, but few people seem to remember him practicing much. When teeth didn’t fall out by themselves, they had to be pulled by primitive methods. My great-grandfather was the neighborhood “tooth-puller,” using an instrument seemingly left over from the Inquisition. It had a ball on one side of the handles, then a set of metal claws that clamped on the tooth’s other side. He would then work the tooth back and forth till it came out—hopefully in one piece. If it didn’t there was a pair of pliers with slender points to extract the remaining shards. Of course there were the terrible episodes of toothache and abscess that affected people of all ages, many cases harming general health and physical condition. Booker T. had it right. Once we all owned toothbrushes — and used them — the worst of this phase of the River days was over.
