PACT Directors and members met in Bandera on Nov. 16, 2019. The event was hosted by St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The Knights of Columbus, the Altar Society, and the parishioners welcomed our meetings with plenty of food and great cowboy-themed celebrations.

El Paso has an active and busy organization, hosting many events during the year.
Our members take part in beautiful, traditional Polish events such as the Houston Polish Festival. Dance Group Wawel performs at many events, including the Houston Polish Festival.
Children are the pride and joy of Polish cultural activities all around Texas.
Polish Heritage Center USA in Panna Maria welcomed a Polish delegation of farmers visiting Texas A&M.
Austin Polish Society regularly hosts the Austin Polish Film Festival.

2019 PACT Activities ■ Assisted in the arrangements to display an art exhibit on the American Revolution/Civil War. ■ Participated in the Proclamation of “Polish Month” in Washington County. ■ Assisted in the arrangements to display the art exhibit “Fighting and Suffering” at Texas A&M. ■ Obtained $2000 in grants from the Polish Consulate in Houston for educational and cultural programs. ■ Assisted in the application for grant funding of the Polish Heritage Center in Panna Maria from Wspolnota Polska. ■ Submitted a letter of support to President Trump for the Visa waiver program. ■ Participated in the planning for President Duda’s June visit to Houston. ■ Distributed 3,500 PACT directories at events around Texas. ■ Joined the Polish American Chamber of Commerce in Texas. ■ Mailed a Letter of Support to the President of the EHESS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales)(School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) and Ambassador of France in Poland concerning the misinformation about the role of Poles during the Holocaust. ■ Sent representatives to meet with Argentines of Polish Descent and Brazilians of Polish Descent. ■ Provided PACT representation at

numerous meetings, festivals and programs across Texas. ■ Maintained an active social media presence. ■ Held regular directors meetings via teleconference. ■ Provided letters of support for the U.S. Senate Resolution 556 commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Katyn Massacre. ■ Provided a proclamation for Elenora Dugosh Goodley. ■ Provided information for the PAHA Guide to Polish Historical Sites in Texas. ■ Represented PACT at regional Polonia activities in Austin, Panna Maria, Sherman, Houston, Bremond, Chappell Hill, San Antonio, Dallas and more. ■ Provided an interview to Polish TV 24 about Texas Polonia. ■ Provided photos to ZGODA of Texas Polonia Activities. ■ Provided professors from Adam Mickiewicz University an opportunity to document Wielkopolska 19th century dialect and music in Texas. ■ Provided a letter of support to Polish President Andrzej Duda for the ACP Syndrome Project. ■ Provided a letter of support for the VISA Waiver Program to Polish President Andrzej Duda and US President Donald Trump. ■ Provided contacts for the Business and Trade between Texas and the U.S.

In memory of my great-greatgrandparents, John Kush and Josephine Opiela Kush.
They both came to Texas from the region of Silesia, in Poland. John arrived on the first ship in 1854 and was a stonemason who settled in downtown San Antonio and helped build many churches and buildings, including St. Michael’s Church that stood in the footprint of the Tower of Americas, and where the couple wed in 1868. Josephine had come to Texas with her parents, Nicolaus and Josephine Opiela (buried in Panna Maria) and seven siblings in 1856. Their family home John Kush built remains in its original location in Hemisfair Park. I hope to honor them by serving as Director for the PACT and Marketing Director for the Polish Heritage Center at Panna Maria. I only learned of my Polish ancestors after working with the PHC, Bishop Yanta, and the communities and now I am blessed and will treasure this heritage and will pass on to my family.

I am a 4th or 5th generation Polish American. My grandmother’s parents from my mother’s side came to America when they were young to work and pursue the “American Dream.” Through the years, that side of the family has either passed away or married into non-Polish descent. Polish life has since disappeared from our family. I study at Texas A&M, which led me to the TAMU Polish Club. The club and a trip to Poland have sparked a passion for me to bring Polish back into my family. I’m currently studying Polish, learning what I can about Poland, and embracing every opportunity that I can to get closer to this AMAZING culture! 11

Bandera County Sister Partnership Association
The Mission of the Bandera County Sister Partnership (BCSPA) is to advance peace through lasting relationships and international understanding, friendships, and diplomatic relations. We take the United States of America, Texas, and Bandera County with us when we go abroad. Our goal is to spread peace and goodwill through sister partnerships with international cities, counties, schools, citizens, and diplomatic exchanges; to promote Bandera as the USA’s best western cowboy culture vacation attraction helping to expand economic development in the city and county of Bandera. The BCSPA promotes tourism, culture, and the cowboy traditions of Bandera County, Texas since first established in 2004.

“The Cowboy Capital of the World.”
Father Leopold Moczygemba Foundation In the early 1850s, Father Leopold Moczygemba, from Pluznica, Silesia, a region in Europe, now southwest Poland, came to south Texas. To help his suffering friends and families in Poland the new priest encouraged them to move to Texas, settling in Panna Maria and many other Texas communities. Their descendants continue to call South Texas home. The Foundation sponsors an annual essay scholarship contest, and maintains two websites, resulting in the building of bridges and relationships between Poland and Texas.

After the director and membership meetings, the day included an official welcome ceremony at the Bandera County Courthouse by Bandera Mayor Suzanne Schauman and County Commissioners Jordan Rutherford and Bruce Eliker. Performers included Mini Wawel, Dance Group Wawel, Babcia Wawel, Kelly Scott and his Chuck Wagon, Wes Hatch and his Longhorn “Redneck,” Bandera Cowgirls, Brothel Babes, Bandera Cattle Company Gunfighters, Trick Roper Will Fitzbatrick, and Roy Dugosh. Holy Mass was celebrated by Msgr. Kurzaj at St. Stanislaus. Lunch was held at The Farm Country Club where the crowd enjoyed the performances, a silent auction, singing, and award presentations. All silent auction sales benefited the PACT Scholarship Program. Our special appreciation to all the event sponsors, egg artists, and the people of Bandera!!

Kosciusko, or more properly spelled Kosciuszko, was named for the Polish General Thaddeus Kosciusko when it was established March 12, 1880 by sixty-five Polish families. In 1892 a Polish Catholic school was built. The first Church was built in 1898. The people gathered together and with $2,000 built the first Church and named it St. Ann. The wooden church measured 80ft x 40ft.

St. Michael Catholic Church The original St. Michael Catholic Church was the center of the third oldest parish in San Antonio, Texas, and a nucleus for the Polish people of the city. It began with the arrival of Father Vincent Barzynski of the Resurrectionist Order who was the earliest resident pastor. On November 18, 1866, the first Mass of the newly organized parish was celebrated in the San Fernando Cathedral. St. Michael’s divine services were initially held in a rented one-story, rock building owned by Emanuel Rzeppa. In 1922, the original church was torn down and a larger edifice of white brick was erected. The cornerstone of this majestic church was laid on July 4, 1922, followed by the dedication on October 25, 1922. The blessing of the beautiful stained glass windows took place on December 2, 1923. This historic church, with St. Michael the Archangel as its standard bearer, was demolished to make room for the 1968 HemisFair. Info courtesy of SilesianTexans.com.
