COUNCIL FOR EFFECTIVE ACTIONS AND DECISIONS (C.E.A.D) ANNUAL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR KING WHEN: Martin Luther King Jr. Day WHAT: The yearly event celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. with speakers and singers. The event includes words from prominent African Americans. WHERE: Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, 1801 Nash St., Sanford

SANFORD BLOCK PARTY WHEN: April WHAT: Each year, the community comes together to clean up and beautify a specified area of town. This can include painting, mowing, raking and landscaping. Volunteers will start the day with breakfast, followed by a morning of landscaping, light painting and light construction where needed. After, lunch and entertainment will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools if they can. WHERE: Varies yearly BROADWAY OUR WAY WHEN: April WHAT: The event includes a street fair with various vendors and classic cars and an antique tractor display. A fan favorite is the people’s choice and judge’s barbecue cookoff, which features several teams vying for a cash prize and bragging rights of the best barbecue. There’s plenty of entertainment throughout the day, with kids activities and music on Main Street. WHERE: Main Street, Broadway RELAY FOR LIFE WHEN: May WHAT: Relay for Life is a national event that raises awareness 6 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2020

of cancer and raises money for cancer research. The event honors those who have or had cancer and those who have died because of the disease. The Survivor and Caregiver walk and the luminaria walk are the event’s mainstays. Each light for the luminaria walk represents a life—a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a support for a person still fighting the disease. WHERE: Lions Club Fairgrounds, 505 N. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT WHEN: August WHAT: National Night Out aims to strengthen community ties and improve relationships between the police and residents. Organizers throughout the county host their own events that feature food, games and music. Throughout the evening, a law enforcement official will visit each location and interact with attendees. WHERE: Various locations in Lee County LEE REGIONAL FAIR WHEN: September 15-20 WHAT: In its 83nd year, the Lee Regional Fair is a yearly staple, offering food, rides and more. Food choices include funnel cakes, fried macaroni cheese balls, the Lions Club burger and other fair favorites. WHERE: Lions Club Fairgrounds, 505 N. Seventh St., Sanford, N.C, 27330 SANFORD BRUSH AND PALETTE CLUB’S ANNUAL ART SHOW WHEN: October WHAT: The show features art from the club’s members, with last year’s event sporting nearly 1,000 pieces from 65 artists. DOWNTOWN TRICK OR TREATING WHEN: Week of Halloween WHAT: Lee County celebrates Halloween en masse, with events leading up to and on October 31. Several churches around town host trunk-or-treats that bring a safe option to the years-old pastime. HAVEN of Lee County puts on a No Scare Fair, a family event that offers fun, candy and games for all. WHERE: Downtown Sanford

Christmas parade ushers in the holiday season. The event features floats from local businesses, clubs and churches. Cheerleading squads and bands will make an appearance. WHERE: Downtown Sanford

BROADWAY VETERANS EVENT WHEN: Veterans Day WHAT: The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 5 hosts the event each year, honoring those who have served. Several people related to the military will speak, while veterans from several wars are invited to attend. The speakers are followed by a wreath laying ceremony. WHERE: North Carolina Veterans Memorial Pavilion, Broadway SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY WHEN: November 28 WHAT: Started by American Express, Small Business Saturday celebrates local businesses the day after Black Friday. THE TEMPLE THEATRE

Built in 1925, the Temple Theatre, located a half-block from the Sanford depot, began as a stop for performers of Vaudeville and continued to serve as the prime entertainment center of Lee County. Through the years, it evolved from traveling shows to movies and, in the 1960s, the Sanford Little Theatre. In 1965, the Temple shut down for 15 years, but was resurrected in 1981 by a group of Lee County residents. In 1984, the Temple again became a home for theatre products and has earned a reputation as a performing

center for Central North Carolina. “We’re very lucky to have it,” Bryan said. “It’s live, professional theater, which sets it apart,” Bryan said. KIWANIS FAMILY PARK/ SPLASH PAD

The Kiwanis Family Park on North Fifth Street underwent renovations that included an all-inclusive playground, making its play features such as swings accessible to those whose physical abilities are limited. The park includes a half-mile walking trail and picnic pavilions, but the crown jewel is the Splash Pad, which opened in September. DEPOT PARK

No trip to Sanford or Lee County is complete without a stop at Depot Park, the historic centerpiece of the city. It’s based on the long history of the railroad, which was what helped put Sanford on the map, according to the Welcome to Sanford website. The park’s anchor is the former Sanford Train Depot, which was built in 1872 along with the Railroad House, and an old steam locomotive known as the #12 engine. The Railroad House, which once provided living quarters for the railroad agent, is now home to a museum that features replicas of older trains. The park features a pavilion that’s home to concerts and musical performances, a splash fountain and the Railroad House museum. A pavilion provides a venue for outdoor concerts and musical events and, in

Ross is the designer of the course at Augusta Country Club in Augusta, Georgia — home of the celebrated Master’s Tournament — and the Sedgefield Country Club course in Greensboro, a former home to the Greater Greensboro Open. Sanford Municipal course’s fairways are lined by pine trees and azaleas are a staple of spring. The back nine holes overlook Buffalo Creek. THE POWER OF: NETWORKING Whether you or your business are new to the community, or your company’s doors have been open for generations, there is a value in networking that is difficult to find by other means. According to Forbes, “Networking is not only about trading information, but also serves as an avenue to create long-term relationships with mutual benefits.” Business is built on relationships; there are countless stories and anecdotes about various successes in the business world stemming from networking and relationships. But how, exactly, does one network efficiently and productively? How do you cultivate strong business relationships? Here are a few tips:

Be sure to reach out to the other person again not long after your interaction in order to sustain the newfound relationship. THIS ISN’T A CARD-COLLECTING GAME: Far too often, business leaders have the mindset that they need to know every single one of the powers that be within an x-mile radius of their front door in order to be successful; that more business cards = more connections. Instead of casting the widest net possible, focus on what connections best benefit, and correlate, your business’s goals and missions.

Having a strong business connection with someone isn’t just about boosting your bottom line or streamlining processes – it is a relationship. Be a good steward of business; pass along an article or resource that may be beneficial to the other person and their organization. Be a connector between two parties that could be assets to one another.

How many business cards are printed per year? 27 million business cards printed daily turns into just under 10,000,000,000 business cards printed annually. Of the 10 billion cards, 8 billion will be tossed within a week. That’s 88% of the cards printed.

THE POWER OF: EVENTS In 2019 alone, the Sanford Area Growth Alliance, the merger of Economic Development and the Chamber of Commerce, facilitated over 60 events. From monthly morning meetings, to banquets, to a golf tournament and more, SAGA provided the local community various opportunities to get away from the desk and in front of other business and community leaders. But why, exactly, do these events matter? “As a Chamber member, you have access to a variety of monthly and annual events,” said SAGA Events Manager Morgan Barbour. “By participating, you can build your business impression through the connections you make along with staying informed of Chamber and community happenings. This can lead to referrals, engagement in the business community and increased awareness of your business or service.” It is understandable, though, that walking into an event can be daunting, especially if you or your business are new to the community. Here are a few tips to make the most of your event-attending experience:

1. SET EXPECTATIONS FOR YOURSELF: Why are you attending this event? Are you looking to gain new clients? Are you looking to establish new relationships to further expand the development side of your business? Be mindful of the purpose of your attendance before you go in order to best utilize your time and interactions.

5. FOLLOW UP: As stated earlier, it is a good practice to follow up with a new connection after your initial interaction. Did you trade business cards? Jot down notes from your conversation on the back of theirs – this information could further help you in growing your newfound relationship. raft breweries have become something of a staple in Sanford as they have in other places. The breweries bring in money, but also provide customers with a smorgasbord of homemade beers sure to tickle anyone’s taste buds. Hugger Mugger Brewing Co. and Camelback Brewing Co., both opening in 2018, have played a role in the economic health of Lee County, too. Hugger Mugger, at 229 Wicker Street, offers 18 beers. A short drive away, at the Spring Lane Galleria, is Camelback Brewing Company, a brewery that celebrates Lee County and Sanford, owner Mike Stec said. “We’re from here and we try to celebrate things that are significant to Sanford and Lee County,” said Stec, who’s also the head brewer. In fact, the pub was named after the Deep River Camelback Bridge, a truss bridge spanning the river in the Cumnock community, Stec said. Camelback is known for hopperstyle beer. “We do lagers that are light, crisp and clean and we do West Coast IPAs.” One of the popular offerings, he said, is the Lord Propietor Imperial Red Ale. The brewery offers about eight varieties at a time, Stec said, and constantly rotates them. “We try to offer something new and different. We might have something they (customers) like and come back.” Both breweries offer a variety of entertainment and pub food. Hugger Mugger differs in that its food selections are served out of food trucks that feature Greek and Mexican fare as well as Maine lobster. While the breweries are competing businesses, Stec and Emmert often work together. “We’re definitely the smaller brewery,” Stec said, “but we still do a lot together. ne of Lee County’s hidden treasures is the Ole Gilliam Mill Park, where history and serenity come together.

Tucked away in a rural area of the county, the park is best known for its annual Ole Mill Crank-Up, held in May. That’s when the Gilliam Grist Mill — actually, a replica — comes to life. In fact, a lot of historical activities come to life including a saw mill, a shingle splitter, an 1870 steam engine, making soap, pottery and even moonshine.

“We’re trying to preserve some historical stuff,” park manager Jimmy Bass said. The park’s roots go back to the 1850 when Stephen Henley built the original mill, according to the park’s historical records. In 1870, Alexander McIver bought the mill. It was leased for several years by John and Jesse Gilliam. In 1890, he bought the mill and 500 acres of land from McIver, the park’s historical records say. The Gilliams owned the mill until 1928, when it was swept away in a flood. It was the late Worth Pickard

and his wife, Nancy, who breathed new life into the mill and the park. “His plan was to build a duplicate of the mill,” Bass said. In the early 1970s, Pickard began work on reproduction of the original mill. With the help of four others — Eddie Paschal, Bill Freeman, Bill Nielsen and George Pickard — and working only on holidays and weekends, the mill was completed in 1979. The finished product is nestled into a hillside next to Pocket Creek overlooking the creek, a small pond, an amphitheater and an assortment of farm buildings. In 2000, the Pickards donated the mill, relics and the site’s existing buildings along with 15 acres for the Old Gilliam Mill Park.

Once a year, the mill comes rumbling to life as it grounds up corn used for cornmeal and grits. It’s the park’s only event, the annual Old Mill Crank-up, traditionally held the third weekend in May. Not only does the mill begin to turn, other historical relics are cranked up, giving people a sample of farm life as it used to be. There’s a sawmill that’s powered by a steam engine — creating a rhythmic beat — as it saws logs into lumber, Bass said, and is split by a wood splitter. There’s a shingle mill used to craft wooden shingle and to make tobacco sticks. Once the leaves are brought in from the field, they’re attached to the sticks and hung in a barn until they dry. In another building is a shiny still that’s used to demonstrate the craft of making moonshine, which is put into

Mason jars. “We have a special use permit,” Bass said. “Nobody gets to sample it.” In fact, the finished product — between 12 and 14 quarts — is turned back into fuel for machinery. Another building houses a blacksmith operation and a kiln is fired up for making pottery. The Ole Mill Crank-up is the park’s annual fundraiser, said John Marshburn, president of the nonprofit’s board of directors. The park is open from sunrise to sunset for those wanting to explore the trails or fish in the pond. It can also be rented for weddings, Bass said. This year’s Ole Mill Crank-Up marks the event’s 40th year, but because of the coronavirus pandemic is now scheduled for the first weekend in October.

SANFORD’S HISTORY

stablished in 1874, Sanford began as a booming railroad town, with businessmen and entertainers seeking success along the Western and Chatham railroad lines.

Many residents know of the city’s industrial roots, embodied in the

old railroad depot at the corner of Charlotte Avenue and South Moore Street. Only a few yards away is the city’s oldest home, the Railroad House, built in 1872 for Sanford’s railroad agent. Depot Park is the heart of Sanford’s historic district, but the city’s past is also displayed in houses, churches and commercial buildings along the streets of

downtown. Hidden in plain sight, the aged wooden porches and brick walls keep the city’s history alive. Liz Whitmore, Sanford’s historic preservation planner, said one of her favorite homes in the city is the S.L. Long House, at 220 N. Gulf St. The house was built in 1924 for Atlantic Coastline Railroad engineer S.L Long. Contractor A.L. Link Boykin, who built many homes in the 1900s, Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2020 ◀ 29

was in charge of construction, according to city records. The two-story home has a wide wrap-around porch leading to an entryway that evokes early American colonial architecture. Inside, it features brick mantels and arched fireplaces. The house is similar to the James A. and Susie B. Overton House at 323 N. Vance St., according to city records. That home was also built in 1924 by Boykin. “To find a house that’s totally intact is really a treasure,” Whitmore said. “It just brings back the nostalgia of an older period in time.” Some builders have tried to evoke that nostalgia by replicating historic 30 ▶ Herald LEE COUNTY LIVING 2020

features like built-in bookshelves and large segmented windows, Whitmore said. But nowadays, building homes that match the quality of those constructed in the 1900s is much more expensive. The price of some materials is “astronomical,” she said. “The windows were custommade, they weren’t factory made,” Whitmore said. “You look at the bannisters and balustrades, and the craftsmanship is far superior to what we have today. They’re gonna last forever if you take care of them. “When you look at this, you think of all the hands that were involved.” For Whitmore, many of the

buildings in Sanford bring back memories of a leisurely Southern lifestyle and the connections made in a small community, she said. One of the most important places for people to meet were churches. “The churches were smaller, they were more intimate, they were more neighborhood-oriented,” Whitmore said. “Churches were a community gathering place.” The Buffalo Presbyterian Church in southwest Sanford is a good example of a classic Southern church, Whitmore said. Founded in 1797 by Scottish Highlanders, the church is topped with a white steeple and has tall windows that

run the length of the sanctuary. Another notable building is the Euphronia Presbyterian Church in the White Hill area. While historic homes and churches may evoke Sanford’s community history, the city’s commercial history is represented in old factories and manufacturing facilities. The Seaboard Milling Company, at 202 Hickory Ave., was built in 1915-16, according to the National Register of Historic Places. The roller mill, housed in the three-story brick building, was used to grind grain. Also commemorating the city’s manufacturing history is the Endor Iron Furnace in Cumnock. The iron

furnace was constructed in the early 1860s along the Deep River, which held iron deposits. The 35-foot tall iron furnace, built with local stone, was used to smelt iron during the Civil War from 1861-64, and later from 1870-71. The significance of these buildings can’t be overlooked, Whitmore said. It’s vital to keep them intact. “I think a lot of people take it for granted that these buildings are here and how important they are,” she said. “If something isn’t taken care of and has to be demolished, that landmark of your childhood is gone. That piece of history is gone.”

ver the past five years, Sanford artist Chris Dalton has wielded a paintbrush to bring the walls of Lee County to life.

From murals showcasing the town’s history, to more colorful pieces that are just fun to look at, Dalton’s work gives anyone passing through the area something interesting to see and even interact with. Dalton hopes her larger-than-life public art pieces can help bring tourists and art lovers alike to Lee County. “My ambition is to make Sanford look better and better and better, and have more and more people come, just to see the art and everything else we have,” she said. During Dalton’s half-decade of painting

murals on Sanford buildings, she’s responsible for six of the county’s 11 mural installments. Dalton’s works include: “Off to War: A World War II Tribute,” on the corner of Moore and Carthage streets; “Tobacco History,” at 526 Wicker St.; “Fairview Dairy,” at 132 McIver St.; “DREAM,” at 2412 S. Horner Blvd.; “Bringing the Arts Together,” at 220 S. Horner Blvd.; and “Wings,” on the wall of Charlie Watson Lane off South Steele Street. She said each of her murals took around four to six weeks to complete, and that the process is an exhausting one. When working on a piece, she’ll paint in shifts as long as eight hours a day. Despite the mental and physical toll of the process, Dalton said she loves every second of helping to beautify her town.

“I really love it when I’m up there on my scaffolding and painting. Just me and God, the painting and my music playing, and I’ll just get in a groove,” she said with a laugh. “I always have either opera or Christian workout music playing while I paint. It’s all part of my process.” For Dalton, her favorite part of working on murals is the unique opportunity to “paint big.” “The thing I really love about the murals is the challenge of it. Unless you’ve ever painted something so substantial, it’s like, ‘Who knew that could ever happen?’” she said. “When you start, you have this 50foot blank wall, and a month later, you’ve turned it into this work of art. It’s really quite the feeling of accomplishment.” As daunting as it can be to paint entire walls, Dalton said she has

become more comfortable with the process. “I’m still intimidated, but when I’m painting, I definitely don’t feel as overwhelmed as I used to be,” she said. “I really count on God to help me through it. I have to give God all the glory, I really couldn’t do it without him.” Through her murals, Dalton hopes to encourage others to embark on their own artistic journeys. “I’m really happy doing this here in a community like Sanford. My hope is that my work opens up a creative outlet to anyone who views it,” Dalton said. “I just hope they see my work and go ‘Oh that’s a cool idea, now let me try to work one of my ideas.’ That’s always been my goal as an artist, to inspire others.” Visit www.sanfordnc.net/559/ Murals to view the full list of murals in Lee County.

1. SANFORD SPINNERS This mural honors all the athletes who played for the Sanford Spinners baseball team in the Tobacco State League during the late 1940s. The Spinners played at Temple Park, located at the corner of McIver and Seventh streets. The field and grandstand (which no longer exists) were built by the WPA. The mural was inspired by Howard Auman, who pitched the Spinners to its first league championship in 1946.

5. HERB THOMAS AND THE FABULOUS HUDSON HORNET

Herb Thomas and his Fabulous Hudson Hornet were instrumental in the birth of NASCAR. Thomas was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame at Darlington, South Carolina in 1965 the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama in 1994. He was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998 and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2012.

ight in the heart of downtown Sanford, a historic building in Depot Park gives insight to over 100 years of Lee County’s history.

The Historic Railroad House was built in 1872, before Sanford and even Lee County were formed, and is now considered the oldest home in the county. According to Marty Stevens, president of the Railroad House Historical

Association, it originally served as a depot house for W.T. Tucker, a depot agent with the Raleigh and Augusta Airline Railroad, who eventually became Sanford’s first mayor. “When the railroads were first coming into this area, this was a farming and turpentining territory, there was not a town,” Stevens said. “The railroad was going through Jonesboro back in the mid-1800s, and there was another line that was wanted in the area, so it was decided it would be placed through

here (at the now-Depot Park).” Two years after the construction of the railroad, the area was named Sanford, after C.O. Sanford, a railroad civil engineer who played a major part designing and building the rail lines in the area. Today, the old depot home serves as a museum and a reminder of how this town came to be. Inside the Gothic Revival hometurned-museum are countless donated relics hanging from the walls and sitting inside glass displays that tell the story of Sanford’s past. Some of the items include old railroad equipment that was once used in the area; pieces from A.R. Cole Pottery,

a well-known Lee County potter; Sanford Spinners baseball memorabilia “from the good ol’ days;” a collection of antique farming and surveying equipment; brownstone, which came from two Lee County brownstone mines; mining tools and supplies; various military clothing and memorabilia and miscellaneous old-school gadgets that aren’t used today. “We’ve got all kinds of historical things, and it’s all really fun to look at,” Stevens said. “It’s an interesting

collection. These aren’t items of great monetary value, but they’re priceless bits of our history, because once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.” Sitting right outside the museum is a local landmark and historic steam engine known as “Old Locomotive No. 12.” The steam engine was in service for 44 years before being retired in 1955, and has sat in its current location for the past 54 years. “To me it is a fabulous piece of our collection. I guess it’s the number one

piece next to the house itself,” Stevens said. “It just symbolizes Sanford and how we got started. I love that train.” Stevens said the Railroad House attracts history and railroad enthusiasts from all around the country, as well as others who even travel overseas to catch a glimpse of Lee County history. “It’s really iconic to our area. If you look at pictures of Lee County or Sanford that are online to promote the area, almost always you’ll find a picture of the Railroad House,”

People don’t realize where we came from,” Stevens said. “And the kids learn to appreciate how wonderful it is to have all of our modern conveniences when they see how our grandmothers and great-grandmothers all had to look after things.

“I do think it helps you appreciate the people who have served this community and got us to where we are today. MONUMENT to EDUCATION

he old brick building on South Vance Street — now W.B. Wicker Elementary School — has been a monument to education since it first opened in 1927.

Constructed by well-known local builder A.L. “Link” Boykin, the industrial building opened as the Lee County Training School to educate black children in a time of segregation, according to the National Register of Historic Places. The building — which started out

with a library and 10 classrooms — was funded in part by the Rosenwald Fund, established by Booker T. Washington to support the construction of school buildings for African American students. From 1929-69, the school housed hundreds of high schoolers from across Lee County. In 1954, it was renamed the W.B. Wicker School in honor of the school’s founding principal, William Bartelle Wicker, according to the register. Some 400 students returned to their old campus for the first time in the fall of 2019, celebrating their 16th biennial

alumni reunion. Walking through the hallways of the old building brought back memories, said Margaret Murchison, president of the W.B. Wicker Alumni Committee. “We can just hear Mr. Wicker saying ‘Boy, don’t be smoking out there’ and ‘Don’t I know your mama?’” she said. “That’s what he always said.” Dorothy Fountain, a W.B. Wicker alumni who graduated in 1966, agreed. “The teachers were very good. You didn’t realize it though until after,” she said. “Ms. Flemings, good Lord. She said, ‘If I tell you to stand on your head, you better find yourself trying.’ She was a good math teacher, but she was stern.” Wicker made a real difference for many of his students, Murchison said. At the time, the school was one of only nine black schools in the county, and in addition to job training, it offered

music and physical education. After desegregation took effect in 1969, the building served as one of Lee County’s elementary and middle schools for another two decades. It closed in 1990 and later fell into disrepair. Preservation of the building took a lot of work, said Murchison. She and other alumni worried the city would demolish the building. They organized an informal campaign to do weekly clean-ups at the campus before interest in the building renewed in the early 2000s, she said. In 2006, Central Carolina Community College seized the property to use as an auxiliary campus. Then, nine years later, the school came full circle. In 2015, the Lee County Board of Education chose the campus as the site for the county’s new elementary school. Renovation began in 2018

The school is the first in the county with a STEAM curriculum, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. and the doors opened to 700 students in August 2019, just in time for the 2019-’20 school year. The creation of the $22 million elementary school was a five-year enterprise, with discussion of the school starting in 2014. The goal was to alleviate overcrowding at J.R. Ingram, J. Glenn Edwards and B.T. Bullock elementary schools, which were using mobile classrooms to accommodate a growing student population. The school is the first in the county with a STEAM curriculum, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. One student, 7-year-old Sophia

Woods, was especially excited to begin class at W.B. Wicker when she learned about the curriculum. “They have a theater room and a dance studio!” Sophia exclaimed during the school’s open house, a few days before her first day. “Luckily I’m staying here until fifth grade. I’m happy.” W.B. Wicker will eventually grow to serve a total of 969 students, according to Lee County Schools Superintendent Andy Brian. A new principal, Aimee Petrarca, was appointed in February after former principal Wendy Carlyle returned to a position in the school district’s Central Office.
