Of the Bible’s four Gospels, only Matthew and Luke tell the famous stories of Christmas, but Mark and John have equally dramatic openings. Jesus was certainly the son of Mary, almost certainly not the son of Joseph, and said by Christians to be the Son of God (even opponents of the ancient church admitted that Joseph was not the father. One story claimed Mary had been with a soldier, Pantera). In the Jewish scriptures, there are psalms and prophecies extolling a king on his enthronement. “I will proclaim the Lord’s decree, ‘You are my son, today I have begotten you” (Psalm 2:6-7); “The Lord himself said to my own lord, ‘Come and sit at my right hand. In sacred splendor, from the womb of the dawn, you have the dew [of generation] with which I have begotten you’.” (Psalm 110:1-3) From the moment of enthronement, the new king became such a Son of God, and was invested with God’s authority over his kingdom. He was by adoption and appointment God’s ambassador and presence on Earth. He was also the embodiment of his own kingdom and all
its subjects. He was, therefore, a sacred figure, an intermediary between God and his people, representing each to the other. The roles of king and high priest overlapped. In ancient Israel, kings and priests were anointed with oil on their installation; ‘the Christ’ and ‘the Messiah’ mean simply, ‘the Anointed’. When the high priest put on his robes and entered the temple, he too became a form of god before his people, and of the people before God. Assyrian kings and Egyptian pharaohs were also declared to be sons of their most important god. The mother of Alexander the Great (died 323 BCE) might have spread the famous story that she had been visited by Zeus, king of the gods, before her marriage to Philip, Alexander’s supposed father. Alexander himself notoriously visited a temple of Ammon in Libya and thereafter claimed to be son of Ammon-Re, identified by the Greeks as Zeus. But in general, such divine and human paternity could coexist. It was amongst the early Christians that the title ‘Son of God’ became the title of Jesus and only Jesus; and conversely, there that Jesus became the Son of God and of God alone. The title and its bearer were rising in importance. Jesus was, as the Christians came to believe, not just son, a son, or the son, but the—one, majestic, eternally begotten—Son of God.

Ingredients • ½ cup plus 5 tablespoons butter, softened, divided
• ½ teaspoon baking powder
• 1 cup sugar
• 3 to 4 tablespoons whipping cream
• 1 egg • 2 tablespoons sour cream • 1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon vanilla, divided • 2 ½ cups flour
• ½ teaspoon salt • 4 cups powdered sugar • Pinch of salt • Food coloring and nonpareils, optional
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease or line a 9" x 13" baking pan and set aside. 2. To make the cookie, in a big mixing bowl, beat ½ cup of butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the egg, sour cream, and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla and mix well. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt and add it slowly to the creamed mixture, mixing until just combined. 4. Press the dough evenly into the prepped pan and bake for 15 to 17 minutes or until the edges are just golden brown. Cool in the pan on a wire rack. 5. For the frosting, beat together the 5 tablespoons of butter, 1 tablespoon vanilla, whipping cream, powdered sugar, and salt until nice and creamy. Stir in food coloring if using.
